My time as a lonely UNT fan at the Texas Monthly Shoot
AstroMike replied to jtm0097's topic in Mean Green Football
Thanks for being the representative there. I kind of know how you felt. I am surrounded by Mean Green Alum at work, but yet feel like the only representative on a daily basis. Though they'll all be jumping on the bandwagon soon enough and be frontrunners one day. -
If I remember right the green one had an adjustable buckle and 100% Cotton. The black one was a Flex Fit Cap. The black one was a different style altogether. It had the SOW with North Texas on it.

I saw that one and the black one when my son and I went in there this week. I tried it and the black one on. I really wished I had picked up that green one. I also love the plain style cap that is not all tricked up with crap and junk all down the side or on the bill. I wear a plain black one similar to the new Nike cap all over the place and people compliment it quite frequently. It was UNT Bookstore cap as well I purchased back in the Summer of '07. It's been to the top of Kitty Hawk launch site, to the Shuttle Vehicle Assembly Building and various NASA Centers, Civil War Battlefields, and has white paint on the top of it where I hit my head at Appomattox Courthouse. Everywhere I wear around the country people ask me if I'm Mean Green. Just my way oftrying to extoll the greatness of North Texas. It my be time for a new one however.

I like who we hired. Leach would have sold some tickets and brought quick attention to the school, but in my opinion in the long run the bi-polar nature of the guy wouldn't have had a positive lasting affect for the school.

Yesterday I took my 10 year old son (who is a big Steeler's Fan) to the Student Union to show him the painting of Mean Joe in his Steeler uniform, only to find it's not there anymore. Does anyone know where this now hangs? I thought maybe they moved it to the new atheletic complex, but I didn't see it there when I went to pick out my season tickets. If anyone can shed the light on this I would appreciate it.

I like the Retro Phil Eagle look from last year or the Jets uniforms. All in all though, I'm just excited for the new stadium and for football to begin. I see great things on the horizon for North Texas sports.

Well, I usually buy two season tickets in my package a year, and I am uping that to three for this season, so I feel like I'm still doing my part. I also try and by as much UNT stuff as I can. I have somthing like 20 shirts, 26 jerseys, and about 10 caps. I still maintain that the biggest problem the local metroplex universities have against them are: the Dallas Cowboys, Mavericks, Rangers, and Stars. When you have pro teams to contend with, along with TCU and SMU, people gravitate to the pro teams. The fact that UNT is viewed as a commuter school also doesn't help along with bouncing around from DI to DII and back to DI again (where it should have stayed all along). We face the other big commuter school is the state in Houston as we open our new home stadium. I think they might have similar attendance type issues based on some of my friends that are alumni from there. The school just needs to keep promoting and the team needs to start winning. It looked like we were on our way in our Sun Belt Titles, but it just crashed and burned in 2006. GO MEAN GREEN!

There is a new sign on a billboard on I-35 South as you are coming from Gainesville and nearing Valley View promoting "The New Mean Green Football Season." I found a smaller version of this in the local Gainesville Daily Register newspaper. They are certainly trying to get the word out for this year.

Thanks for the info. This is my 5th year for season tickets, but the first time I recall getting my notification from a certified letter and two phone calls. Nice to know that football is moving to the forefront for UNT with the new stadium.
-
I'm scheduled to go select my season tickets next week. When the girl called me I meant to ask if they let us go out an pick our seats at the stadium while we are there and actually see where we would be sitting. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. I was driving and trying to pull over to talk when she called, so my thoughts weren't on Mean Green Football (althought they should be at all times)at the time. What does the trip to the office consist of?

2011 Gmg Bowl: One Of The Funnest Days Ever!
AstroMike replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
While I wasn't able to play I was able to swing by and catch some of it with my son (he was the kid running around wearing a MG #7 jersey). It looked like it was a blast (and a blast furnace) for you guys. I enjoyed meeting and talking to our current MG QB Derek Thompson. Seems like a really great guy and represenative for UNT Athletics. I generally have baseball games to coach or NASA training going on whenever the Big Game gets scheduled, but maybe my brother and I can play next year. Good job guys for a Great Cause. -
I think there was a time when many people couldn't go to college for one reason or another such as WWII or the Depression, but supported the main team of their particular state. I know my 85 year old Grandpa is from Oklahoma and that is who he pulls for in football. Of course I have never seen him in any college sports attire. I have a guy at work that is a big fan of the Longhorns but graduated from UNT. When he talks about his school or degree I always ask him to specify if it his real one or his "pretend" one. I've told him many times that he and his wife are terrible alums. On a positive note I am starting to see more and more people wearing Mean Green gear. More than I ever have before.
-
I don't listen to that station because it is terrible. I would imagine whenever the next go around for the Cowboys and Rangers contract is up with them that will be their demise. There is no reason to ever flip it over there. The Ticket and even ESPN are far superior to them.
-
Nice win for the team, coaches, and school. Two things I don't think I have ever said in the same day: The Mean Green win on the road and the Texas Rangers win the Western Division. A nice throw in with t.u. getting beat at home in a laugher. What a sports day. I also really enjoyed the call on the radio by George and Hank tonight. Excellent work guys.

Does North Texas Change Its Shade Of Green & Tweak
AstroMike replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
I liked the darker all green uniforms we had from the start of the decade. That was a great look and it was a "Mean Green" one. I hate that we have white helmets. While I really like incorporating the Eagle on the helmet and having it as our mascot there are just too many other schools (high school included) that use the Eagle as a mascot. It has that element of Cougar High to it that A&M uses when referring to the Univ of Houston. It doesn't help that the Valley View Green Eagles are just 20 miles north of Denton on I-35. Having family at both when I was a kid in Gainesville and learning about the Phil Eagles and them being green gave me major sports confusion as a child. Mean Green is unique to UNT. -
My 1'st Ever College Game I Saw Involved Rice U...
AstroMike replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
I vaguely remember a few Mean Green games as a kid, but the first one I really remember was visiting a friend of mine at tu in 1988 our Freshman year. He lived in the athletic dorms, we got to go to Friday night walk throughs with the horns and I remember it being no big deal. I thought that must be the way it is everywhere for all students. The horns went on that Saturday to get destroyed by the Houston Cougars something like 66 to 10. Andre Ware, James Dixon, and Chuck Witherspoon and the Run and Shoot offense was in full force that day. I remember laughing all the way back to Denton. Until the Cowboys and then starting QB Kevin Sweeney took the field. I quit laughing after that game as the Cowboys went on to a 3 and 13 season. -
If it's my nephew that is going he needs to leave his mean green lightsaber at the house. The one he tries to hit me between the legs with and catches me off guard. I think he needs a ticket. He can also sign up there. I need to give you your ticket since I'm taking the round-about way there.

I'm glad to hear that he called him out. I just don't understand how people that have attended one college yet root for one they have no affiliation with other than they live in that state. I don't hold people that did not attend college to that standard. It would make since that you root for the Univ of _______ based on where you live, but if you attended a school somewhere else why would you do that and as far as I'm concerned you give up that right. Not everyone is college material or may like the money to attend. Once you head off to school, that should be your team. I went to grad school at A&M, my wife got her undergrad degree there and grad at UNT, but when the two play it is UNT all the way for me and A&M for her. I even felt that way when I was at UNT and we were Division Two. I even witnessed some beatings by A&M in person back in the '90s, and it didn't deter me I work with a guy that who is a big UT fan and so is his wife, yet both graduated from UNT. When I call him out I get "We really wanted to go to UT." I think that is the typical response now. People not going where they really wanted to and trying to latch onto the big program name.

I love to look at the rosters in the paper and see North Texas as the college next to the player's name. Are he and Brian Waters the last of the NT Mohicans in the NFL right now? Is Kassell or Spencer playing anywhere? I guess that happens when you haven't posted a decent season is a few years.

Pretty interesting stuff. I think I've been that alone guy at 3AM a few times.
-
Does anyone know if the Rice game is going to be televised? I have to leave after halftime and was hoping to just listen to some of the second half and finish what I miss later on the dvr.
-
I like the UNT stuff I have purchased that they make. The shirts are high quality, but I do wish they would make jerseys, although I'd probably just continue to wear my dark green one from the mid 2000s. It's one of my favorites.

Helmet Color, Troy Signs Player With Legal History
AstroMike replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I can understand keeping everything the same and starting new in the stadium next year. I also think green helmets with the new logo are the way to go. -
Going back to green helmets is the way to go. I wouldn't say I hated the white ones, I just prefer a green helmet. Our uniforms looked better in the first half of the 2000's than the second half.
