  1. Does anyone know the details as to why Stacey resigned as head softball coach before the end of last season? Is there a story here that someone can relate? Enquiring minds would like to know. Thanks.
  2. With all the ruckus about the lame logos provided by the school, I want to introduce you to a logo that failed the fan vote but they went ahead anyway and it might just work. After the Oakland A's moved their A-Class team from Modesto to Stockton, the Colorado Rockies stepped in to provide players, etc. When coming up with a new team name and logo, five examples were provided and the winner of the fan vote was "None of the above." Undaunted, the ownership have created an image that at first was laughed at by locals but now they seem to see something fun and marketable there. To take a look, go to www.modestonuts.com and see what you think. There are a lot of almond, walnut, other groves in and around the area. The merchandise is flying off the shelves!
  3. Greeneagle87, I hope you are not holding your breath and live long enough to see the Cowgirls go 16-0!
  4. I seem to remember that when we played Cincy in NO, that they didn't have much if any time to promote the ticket sales. Does anyone else have a similiar memory?
  5. I remember watching Jefferson play in high school shortly after my own kids attended there. (Moon Valley HS, Phoenix AZ) A very focused player even then.
  6. And GJ83, are happy with a 4-4 record? Including losses to FAU and Baylor? DD does a fine job of recruiting, but the gametime management seems to have some weaknesses. We aren't able to run off and leave an opponent so that we will get some experience for the 2nd and 3rd units. Next year we better hope we sign an experienced JC QB and we get some "killer" DL recruits! The margin for success and failure grows smaller. It's time for DD to stop blaming everyone in sight (fans, weather, crowds, etc.)
  7. SMU played before one of their biggest crowds while they lose 0-42 to Fresno State in Fresno last Saturday. There were 37,000 + fans to watch the rout. You would have to believe that the Fresno State fans would be cheering for SMU in the fourth quarter! At least they showed up.
  8. Let me just add that all of us were in the Hi-Y Club at our separate schools. The basketball was a city tournment. At the time South Oak Cliff and Hillcrest came into the city district, the only other schools were: Crozier Tech, Forest Avenue, North Dallas, Woodrow Wilson, Adamson and Sunset.
  9. Wow, GGII, I remenber some serious football games in Dal-Hi between South Oak Cliff and Hillcrest (my school.) Those two schools had come into the City competition about the same time so the rivalry was close! Both SOC and Sunset ran the old single wing offense and were very successful with it. I remember playing basketball at the Oak Cliff Y against a team from SOC, mostly football players on each side. We had good rapport between the players. It was a good time remembered for me. Also the young lady I had mentioned before and my parents were good friends so we "slept over" a number of times (separately to my regret!) Good memories from all the experiences.
  10. I think they need time with Dr. Phil or Oprah. Serious self esteem issues!
  11. Our softball ladies are great to watch. It's easy to become a fan when you see their dedication!
  12. CMJ, I'm envious about you being at the USC-Cal game. It's easy to overlook the level of play in the PAC-10 but they do sorta kick the Big Ten's butt regularly. If you don't see the teams play regularly you would be hard put to consider them inferior. I've been to the RRS many times when I lived in Dallas. It was intense but nowadays Mackie Brown is getting his butt handed to him every year. Would you call four years a trend? What you could expect in both games are intense rivalries that extend right up into the alumni areas. Maybe someday we'll have that kind of following.
  13. I haven't lived in Texas since the mid-70s but I'm a Mean Green Club member and also the NT Exes. Sure, I don't live near any games now but I've lived near places we've played and I made every game. Yes, we got blown out by Arizona State and even lost to Northern Arizona (at least there was an effort. After a late TD by us, we tried to run for two because we were one point down. It didn't work but we tried.) Right now Fresno State is close so I try to make games there. But if NT was playing close by I'd be there instead. In fact, I even made the softball tourney in Fresno to watch our ladies play against the best teams in the country, incl. national champion Arizona. Hey, aside from a few parents, I was the only "fan" at the games.
  14. This is the second time the Stanford Band has gotten national publicity. Before this was the famous run by Cal-Berkeley on a kick off where the Bears ran through the Stanford Band who had marched out on to the field before the game was officially over. After numerous laterals, Cal scored , finally running over a couple of band members at the goal line.
  15. Stanford AD Ted Leland apologized to BYU and its fans for a halftime show that poked fun at polygamy with five dancers wearing wedding veils. Leland said he would meet with the band to discuss possible sanctions.
  16. WOW, I can remember buying stadium bonds @ $500 each for two for the Texas Stadium! Moved away and never saw a game there but sold the bonds. How bout bonds for the new NT stadium? You say the City of Denton wouldn't support it?
  17. Since I live out of the area, could you give more details about this matter? Last I heard, they were considering something up north. Thanks.
  18. Let me see, when was the last time UT won the Big?-12 football league championship? Boy, they really have to struggle against Baylor, Texas Tech, and of course, OU. All those top rated players from high school and no title!
  19. Maria Schneider was born in Paris in 1952 (No, not Paris TX!) She stared with Jack Nicholson in "The Passenger" in 1974. She seems to have been active in movies and plays up to 2002. Haven't seen any thing she's been in recently. Her role in "Last Tango..." was "uplifting" to put it mildly!
  20. "Cold Mountain" is an excellent movie of the life and times near the end of the Civil War, even if it was filmed in Romania! And no, that isn't a place just south of Bogalusa LA. It was better than I anticipated. With Marlon Brando's passing I went and ordered a movie to remind me of his work, "The Last Tango in Paris." Hijo Mio! There's a lot of interesting dialogue and nudity but Brando's method acting made it seem real and emotional. Worth seeing if you haven't already or recently. Also, the language was "ripe." Brilliance does shine throough however.
  21. Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati's greatest player, will serve as interm coach until Bob Huggins returns from suspension on Aug. 27. He is not being compensated for his involvement. How great was Robertson? He was the Associated Press' national player of the year in '59 and '60. The Hall of Fame member played 14 seasons in the NBA and made the all-star team twelve times! Those of us who saw him play against us in those years can appreciate the skills he had. In the big game at Denton in 1960 we forced them into overtime, but Robertson was like a wizard with his shooting and ball handling skills.
  22. The wife and I are down in Pismo Beach CA for a little "mind vacation" last week and are waiting to eat dinner at one of the good restaurants there. In comes a guy with wife and kids wearing an Oklahoma sweatshirt. Now, there are lots of Okies out here in California, but when he and I were washing our hands I asked him if and when he went to OU. "Oh, no", he said, he just likes their teams! He said, "I went to Texas Tech, but its hard to like their teams, so I back the Sooners." Maybe it's called "The Red Raider Rut!"
  23. If intercollegiate opponents aren't available, why not enlist the sororities to each field a team! Charge admission and kick back 33% to the sorority.
  24. Any thoughts about Women's Wresting? It would draw crowds but only if we could find competition. The old Men's Gym would work fine and think of all the underclass males that would flock to every match!
  25. Another place to find T-Bone Burnett involved is the Roy Orbison video "Black and White." It's a few years old now but has Orbison backed up by Burnett, Rick Springfield, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and others including a trio of backup singers you will recognize when you see'm. Well worth the money. Also bought "Cold Mountain." Enjoyed the music also and the great acting by the cast, including Renee Zellweger. Even Jude Law had lost his British accent for this movie.
