Alzee must be a point guard to be a Division I player He can not shoot worth a lick. Josh must be a 1 to be a Division I player as well. No way he can shoot over 6-3 or 6'4 two guards. He plays well against the 6'2 and under point guards He is a 1 no doubt. We do miss Dom though. I agree. That's going to be a great combo next year.

Great win. Starters were GREAT! Little Matlock played good D. We need some bench scoring from the 2 and 3 postions. We need Mangrum and Thomas back healthy and producing. Collin had an awful game. Thomas needs to get well and produce like he did in JUCO. These things are key after Josh and Eric's health.
-
I also think it was a big win becuase of the way Eric played and the strong play of the starting 5. They are starting to gel as a unit. Eric's health is huge for us. His leadership and determination led the team.
-
As big and athletic as Adams was, it was their guards that killed us. Thomas did not show up for the game. Mangrum playing may have halped a little but not enough. We need a 6'2 to 6'4 scorer at the 2 guard who is consistent I love Tristan out there but we need another good scorer to open things up for Josh.

Is J'mison Morgan A Possible Future Recruit?
BleedGreen replied to ADLER's topic in Mean Green Basketball
So you people actually think Morgan could take minutes away from Ben Knox and Cameron Spencer? Come on! LOL -
Okay, I maybe heard half of the game on the radio, but here is an open plea to the coaching staff. 1.) Please, please do not play Alzee and Josh at the same time in the backcourt. It does you absolutely no good. Alzee can not shoot to save his life and this leaves the defense to focus on Josh. A combo of Tristan, Alzee and Josh does not work. We need either Mangrum or Thomas out there to join Josh and Tristan. Even if Mangrum and Thomas are not playing great, they give us at least a shooter's chance. At one time, we had Alzee, Josh, and Shorter in as the 1-3. That doesn't work either. Shorter is not a scorer!! Don't handcuff your line up especially with no Tramiel for frontcourt scoring. 2.) Thomas is obvioiusly in the doghouse. The kid can play. Not having him is hurting us especially when Collin is off like tonight. Get him back on the floor. 3.) Recruit a new 5 next year and somehow get rid of Spencer or Knox or both if possible. Spencer is a defenisve liability because he is slow as molasses. Arkansas State's big man got a pair of dunks in a row becuase of Spencer's slow feet. Give Knox some more PT to see if he has potential but if he doesn't shwo more by the end of the year, let's get rid of them both. Doug Schindler was more productive....geez. 4.) Tell Williams and Shorter to not shoot anything outside of 8 feet. Neither can shoot. I like them both for what they do contribute but niether can shoot. 5.) We gotta have Tramiel back. I like that you are not rushing him back though. Wise move if he can produce later in conference and in the tournament.

Awesome job by George, Tristan and Josh. I also love how Shorter showed some toughness and leadership. We've got to get some more quality minutes out of Williams, Thomas and Spencer or the three aforementioned guys will fizzle out of fatigue.

Why I Feel This Team Is Struggling
BleedGreen replied to Censored by Laurie's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Thomas can knock down the 3 and is not afraid to drive. He is our second best natural scorer who can create his own shot after Tristan. -
Please, please come back soon and STRONG, Eric. I take back my all my previous UNT Christmas wishes (Knox's departure included) just to have a healthy Eric Tramiel.
-
I usually respect your basketball knowledge but we can not win the conference with a 6-4 and a half Shannon Shorter playing a lot of time at the 4....no way! He needs to be guarding a scoring 2 or 3.

Let it be known that I am a big time Johnny Jones fan and dread the day he leaves. I appreciate the man and what he has done for this program. -
Why I Feel This Team Is Struggling

Okay, I give in. We have to give either Spencer or Knox minutes to see who can step up. One of them must. Last night's game was the best chance to try them for more minutes. Eric is obviously not well and not just his reinjured wrist. He is in bad shape. George and Jacob can not carry the load by themselves. Someone is going to have to step up for good bench minutes. I am not confident in either Ben Knox or Cameron Spencer. I'd rather have Kedrick Hogans. But, no choice now. My bet is on Spencer, if I had to make one. -
My Christmas Wishes For Mean Green Basketball
BleedGreen replied to BleedGreen's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I hope Knox makes me eat my words. -
1.) Health for Eric Tramiel 2.) Confidence for Alzee Williams 3.) Rest for Josh White 4.) That George O. will touch as many lives as possible after graduation. 5.) Tristan Thompson continues this torrid streak and becomes a go to scorer for the next 2.5 years. 6.) Jacob Holmen posterizes the WKU big man with a thunderous dunk on his pumpkin head. 7.) That Ben Knox transfers to a Division III school, thus opening another scholarshiip for us. 8.) That the medical redshirt be granted to Dominique Johnson. 9.) That Richard Thomas and Shannon Shorter make the grades and flourish academically at UNT. 10.) That Johnny Jones sign on for anotther 5 years. We don't know how lucky we have it with JJ. Merry Christmas!

I thought the rotation tonight was right on target. Alzee spelling Josh for a few is good. I'd like to see him get up to 12 minutes per game. Good rotation on the 2's and 3's between Thomas, Mangrum, Thompson, and Shorter. Good trio down low. Good that we are not using Spencer and Knox because no productivity there. I am still worried about Eric's health . Hopefully, that back gets better. The ULM and SELA games have been our best defensive efforts of the year. Great job there all around.

I think it was a bit of a let down after the OSU loss just a few days ago. Plus, the crowd was probably small. Saturday's game versus Boise State will tell us more about this team in terms of being able to beat a mid major on the road where we do not have revenge incentive.
-
We obviously belonged on the court with OSU After the game, Travis Ford was legimatley relieved about the win He called it a quality win. THe OSU announcers said that when the NCAA was looking at the team to make it in the tournament, the win over UNT would count as a quality win. Now, when's the last time you heard someone say that? A Big 12 split would be real nice but the Aggies will certianly be tough. I like this UNT team even better than the '07 squad although it's hard to be the heart of Calvin Watson and Ben Bell

Men's Basketball 2009-2010 Roster
BleedGreen replied to chrisfisher's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I am worried about the shotting guard spot even though we have several people at that spot. The guys we are bringing in are unproven. Also, if Josh gets hurt, we are in big trouble. T -
WHy UNT lost to UTA last night. 1.) When Justin Howerton came into the game, UTA went on its run. Basically UNT was playing 4 against 5 at that time. He had no business in this game. It killed our momentum and UTA made its run then. 2.) Not enough meat to compete - It is VERY difficult to match up with Vareen and Moffitt down low. WHen you have meat and bones players like Harold Stewart and Kendrick Hogans, we are DONE inside when facing opponents with both height and weight down low. 3.) Tristan Thompson was obviously ill and not himself. The offense was stagnant a lot becuase Tristan was under the weather. When he takes initative and takes it to the basket effectively, we are a much better team. (Why, why can't Tristan and Collin Dennis both be ON in the same game. Please, that's all we need to play at another level). 4.) Offense was lethargic. Much of that had to do with UTA's speed on defense and a GOOD strategy by Coach Scott Cross. If our offense becomes so easy to figure out, then we will suffer the same fate as the Cowboys. 5.) Outhustled big time. This actually may be number 1 reason. Look at the hustle stats from last night. We got beat on the boards, steals, assists, and blocks. Combined deficit on the hustle board was -14 or so. UTA wanted it more than we did and was much more aggressive. We did not deserve to win last night. Maybe this will wake us up. I am happy to see Collin playing well though.
-
There is no doubt that we are better than New Orleans. With George hurt and Dennis struggling, no wonder we lose. If this team hits on all cylinders with Josh, Collin Dennis, Tristan Thompson, and an inside combo of a health Odufuwa and Traniel, we can definitely win the west and the tournament. Last night was a fluke. Kendall Dykes is really good but other than that ,New Orleans is not that strong. I think we may have looked past them and to UTA. How could we look past a Sun Belt conference game to UTA you ask? Well, we are fed up with losing to the Movin' Mavs and the guys want revenge. Look for a knock down, drag out next Monday at the Super Pit!

I broadcasted some of Argyle's games on the radio. Although I do love Argyle basketball, I always thought Cory Dixon was SOFT.
-
I had the opportunity to broadcast Argyle football games when Cole played there. He continued to improve throughout high school and is a hard worker in the weight room. I am surprised at the success so far as I never considered him a Division I player. But, hey, he's got much better size now and did some good things at the Spring game too. It's good to see local kids interested in UNT.
-
I was actually surprised that Howerton didn't play in the second half. He actually looked decent in the first half other than the horrible free throw. I think the first half was a small confidence boost for Justin.
-
Quincy deserves much props for playing so many minutes tonight and not getting into foul trouble. Coaches protected him well with the defensive scheme and also laying him back on foul shots. Adam McCoy can definitely shoot the rock. He could be a suprising key later on if he's on in the tournament. Also, hats off to Josh White and to Collin Dennis who were both very sick tonight but still pulled through.

THe UNT vs. Denver men's game will be on Charter Cable Channel 281 in Denton. You must have digital cable and the Sports Tier to get the game on Charter. The name of the station is FSCA, or Fox Sports Atlantic. Tip off is 5:00 p.m. I hope this helps some of you. Nice game to watch before the Cowboys - Panthers game at 7:00 p.m.
