  1. Kram1, I really don't want to hear the rest of your story and I think you missed the point of my posting. I AM a parent of a college athlete and I do know what is going on. You are correct that college athletes aren't playing their sport to put on a resume. They are playing a college sport because as I said in my post that is their payment for a scholarship to get a good education and go out into the world and not only a protective citizen but also to be a representative of their university. I know people who run HR departments for large companies. I have asked them if they look at the college activities on a resume and if so how much weight does playing a sport carry? I have been told that whether an athlete stays with a sport for the entire duration whether things are good or bad for their team says a lot about whether that person will stay with a company when times are good or bad. They can also tell a lot about work ethic, attendance and other areas that relate to whether the person will be on time, complete assigned tasks, can work well with others and overall be a good employee. GPA as an athlete carries a lot of weight as well. Being a college athlete is on the job training. How not to treat people is another lesson that is being learning as well.
  2. No one is holding a gun to tjese kids heads to stay on the team if they are THAT unhappy. My guess, yes, they think they should be playing or playing more (some probably should), but unfortunately...this ain't pee wee football where every kid gets to play half of the game. College football is a JOB! Yes college football is a job. A lot of these players treat it as a job. The answer as to why they are still there is because THEY made a COMMITTMENT to the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS not a coach to go to class, get an education and the reward is to play D1 football. Not only is college football a job, it is a committment. These players know that on a job application it looks a lot better that you stayed and honored your committment instead of quitting when things got tough. . Thankfully, after getting in the coaches face, he WAS given another shot and did win the starting job down the line. I guess that is where I have made my mistake as a parent. I should have taught my son and daughter to get in coaches faces and in the future employers faces when they don't like the situation. Instead I taught my son and daughter to have respect for people and if they have a conflict, try and resolve it one on one and in private instead of out in the open for everyone to watch.
  3. I believe you have said something that is truer than a lot of people want to think about. I have heard people say that Coach Dickey some of the other coaches and players changed a lot when Andrew died. As a parent, I can't even begin to imagine losing a child but I know the coaches and players who had been with Andrew were deeply affected by his death. People can say what they want about Mattress Mac but he did a great thing asking the NCAA to allow him to pay to bring the team to Houston for Andrew's service. From what I have been told this group of coaches and that team really were a family. They embraced the incoming freshmen and shared their loss and their grief. I don't think there was any player that joined the team that didn't know who Andrew Smith was and what he meant to North Texas football. Andrew made a bad choice and he paid the greatest consquence for that choice but from all I have heard he was a true leader and overcame adversity when he came to North Texas. Andrew's little brother played for Rice against North Texas last Saturday. He was #99.
  4. My grandmother use to say "Be careful what you wish for, what you get to replace what you want gone could be worse than what you already have!" Maybe that is what PHS Coach means.
  5. Please keep Kelvin Drake and his family in your prayers. He is from Galveston and his mother and other family members evacuated to Louisana to be with family.
  6. The center of the projected path at 4:30 this morning puts the storm center going just a few miles west of Baton Rouge. I've heard that the Governor of LA is asking for a pre-landfall disaster declaration and has put in a request to keep the out of state Nation Guard units in LA. There are still areas of Baton Rouge without power from Gustav. I was told at tailgating on Saturday that the team hotel in Baton Rouge just got their power backSaturday morning. Remember, Baton Rouge becomes a staging area for hurricane operations. That means the entire city including the campus at LSU is taken over for emergency operations. There will be no rooms for LSU or UNT fans for a football game this weekend if IKE continues on its current course.
  7. I think Coach Dodge has the team stay in a hotel the night before even a home game. Yes he does but so does just about everyone D1 school. Don't most of the players reside in Victory Hall? No they don't. Only the freshmen and sophmores. Can the coaches not keep them "controlled" there before a home game as opposed to paying the cost for a hotel before a home game? What is the issue with "controlling" the team before a home game? If so, what is the cost? Maybe the hotel donates the rooms. Don't know the cost and no the hotels don't donate. Do your research and you will see that the the majority of D1 football programs put their teams up in a hotel the night before a home game. It has to do with being a team, sharing meals together, team and postion meetings. Even if they all lived in Victory Hall, it would still cost the athletic department to have the dining hall open for special meals on Saturday. The team has a special diet on Friday night, Saturday breakfast and pre-game meal. Lots of protein and carbs. Not sure Victory cafeteria could do that for just the football team and not the rest of the student body that lives at Victory. Not only do some of the football players live at Victory but so do some of the other freshman athletes and non athletes. Are you going to tell these residents they can't eat in the dining hall of their dorm because the football team has taken it over?
  8. Johnny's sister Jackie Chalk use to teacher in Round Rock ISD many years ago. Jackie also rode horses and competed with our daughter. Johnny came to several horse shows to watch Jackie compete. He loved helping Jackie with her horse. He was always an inspiration to all of us at those horse shows. This is truly a very sad time for the Stallings family but also for all whose lives Johnny touched at one time.
  9. Staying in Baton Rouge would be okay. Just don't leave the stadium until everyone else has left and your know all the LSU fans are gone. What you don't understand is as you walk by the stadium to go to the visitors side to get in there is a "SPECIAL" parking lot for the LSU fans that have paid hundreds of thousands of $$$$s to park their RVs in this special parking lot. You get on the waiting list. Once you actually get a parking spot then you spend years moving from the back row to the front row. The RVs on the front row are worth BIG bucks. Some of the the areas in front of these RVs have plasma TVs, ceiling fans, tables with linen tablecloths, china, crystal and silver and lots of partying. If there is a big upset by UNT these people are here for overnight. It depends on what part of Texas you are driving from as to what kind of drive it will be. I strongly recommend spending a couple of days in New Orleans or Coushata before game day.

  11. Johnny Quinn's mother, Terri has asked me to let the Mean Green Nation know that Johnny Quinn signed with the Green Bay Packers today. Terri and John Quinn would like to thank the Mean Green Nation for their support and prayers for Johnny. Johnny leaves for Green Bay March 1.
  12. Thank you for posting this. This was such an incredible moment. I was on the deck and I don't remember seeing a dry eye after the flyover. I just wish the players could have been on the field to experience this moment with the rest of us.
  13. it should be about GRADUATING. And for the most part, fans really don't care about that. This is the most intelligent thing that has been said on this board all week. The fans should be concerned about GRADUATIONS rates. After all, some big time football and basketball programs have lost scholarships because of their low graducation rates among their athletes.
  14. Inside Opponents 15 yrd line: Entire crowd starts bouncing up and down in anticipation for the TD and doesnt stop Crowd needs to be quiet so o-line can hear blocking schemes called and snap count.

  16. Lineberry did not play in -04 due to grade ineligiblity.
  17. The Bills are picking up Johnny's expenses. I didn't get this from a friend of a friend of a cousin or a girlfriend. I got this from Johnny's mother.
  18. Johnny was taken as a priority free agent minutes after the draft closed by the Bills. He signed a 2 year contract and received a signing bonus. He leaves in 2 weeks for camp.
