I think talent and decision making are the reasons for his struggles, not attitude.

It's not rust. It's simply what Morris is. Play Fine. He will struggle. Anyone remember the suck that Nick Mullens threw out against UNT in the 2013 UNT blow out at USM? Well, look at him now. Play for the future, because the future isn't this year.

Man, I knew UNT fans were masochists, but really?

This. Especially with some of the insane, over the top, we are going to a bowl game preseason thoughts if some. I believe this program is headed in the right direction and think Littrell can be successful here now that he has a real FBS AD and what appears to be a long-needed commitment to athletics by the university. THAT is what makes me so optimistic for the long term future. That said, we should still be able to discuss game by game problems and be disappointed in weekly outcomes. It isn't an either/or proposition.

It's so hard being so right on such a consistent basis... #mystruggle

Are you saying inclusion in the MWC is about as realistic as UNT being ranked in the top 25 this year? Because that's... Right... Damn you!!!

Stop thinking like its 1992. We should go if by some miracle we receive an offer. Even if we are the only Texas school offered. Always looked to better yourself.
-
Nick Mullens is listed as 6'1, 198lbs as a senior. Which means he is closer to 5'11", 185lbs. Injury risk is ALWAYS there, no matter the size. Play the best player.

If it required work, RV was out. Slight correction. No one has wanted to cozy with us, not the other way around.

Looked like a hamstring to me. Same thing with SMU's running back when he was running free for yet another TD and just fell to the ground.
-
Still don't know if he can recruit here.

Wrong interview, like 90 grad said, but there are a lot of things in this interview that make me think Fine is starting sooner than later. For instance he says Fine will "continue to compete" for the starting job. That isn't putting to rest who will continue to be the starter. At all. He also refers to Fine "having a chance to be special." It's hard for a coach to resist playing these types of players. And lastly, when ask if Fine will continue to get playing opportunities, he basically lays down an emphatic yes. He coulda rolled back the comments he made to Barnett, but he didn't. I like that. I also like a member of this athletic program sitting in a press conference, making no excuses, and saying plainly "this isn't acceptable, we need to do better." THAT is very refreshing.

Lack of explosiveness will make for a long year for UNT
UNT90 replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
If you can't throw deep, get ready for the safeties to be within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage every play. Ine affects the ability to do the other, as we have seen the last 2 years. -

It's not rust, it's who Morris is as a QB. Failure in accuracy on deep balls is what kept him at the end of the bench at Bama. -
No doubt about playing in mop up time not meaning anything, but Littrell has continually talked about how good he is and his comments last night lead me to believe a change is imminent. Its baptism by fire. If you believe the kid is mentally strong enough to fail and learn and get better from that failure, you play him in a season you know is going nowhere. Littrell also needs to make sure he is right about Fine. I think he is the starter by Rice, if not before. Not because of what I saw last night, but because of what Littrell SAID last night in response to a lay up question and because of Littrell's earlier comments about Fine. Also, Littrell had no problem burning Fine's shirt in the first game of the year. All this adds up. It will be interesting to see how the next 3 weeks unfold in relation to the starting QB position at UNT.
-
If that is the case, I think we see a change this week. Littrell's post game comments were really telling. He seemed genuinely disappointed in the QB play vs SMU. And he again said what he said in the fan meeting: the best talent will play, regardless of classification. And he made that comment without being directly asked (it was a post game interview of the Mean Green radio network, so you know there were no hard hitting questions).

SMU-North Texas should open the season every year, not just this one
UNT90 replied to brooks91's topic in Mean Green Football
Correct. We haven't shown any ability to be an "upstart." First, we just gotta start. -

Wrong. As a senior, he is LISTED as 6'1" and 196 lbs. http://m.southernmiss.com/m/sports/m-footbl/mtt/nick_mullens_838046.html Again, probably why he isn't at a P5, just like Fine. Put the kid in and let him learn. This team is going nowhere this season. -

Disagree about it being winnable. It wasn't in doubt from the first drive of the game. SMU CLEARLY had much more talent on the field. At just about every position. -

How big was the USM kid? -

We never made them pay because they could leave their CBs on an island against our WRs and not worry about getting beat deep because of a lack of playmaking abilities by our WRs. Even if one did break free, they knew the chances were less than 50% that the QB could get them the ball. I think you will see this continue next week and beyond. Film is out there now, and this is the way to beat UNT. Just like last year. Funny how changing systems doesn't matter without a talent upgrade, isn't it?- 43 replies

My concern is that this staff won't be able to recruit the players needed to make their systems (offensive and defensive) work. We will find out a lot more about that in February.
-
And I'm willing to bet the Houston fans outnumbered the OU fans at NRG, making @MeanGreenMailbox wrong again on this game. I've noticed since Houston's win yesterday, several of the usual suspects have gone from "Houston sucks and they will never get into the Big 12 because they are just like UNT" to "How can you compare Houston to UNT? I mean, Houston is nationally ranked!" F'n hypocrites.

Littrell talked about explosive plays in his post game interview and how SMU had a bunch and UNT didn't have any (he was speaking of offense). The problem is SMU has explosive playmakers in Davis, their RB, and their WR. UNT doesn't have one single explosive playmaker on offense. Not one. UNT is going to struggle to score points this year because of that fact. Having seen Morris for over 3 quarters, it is apparent why he sat on the bench at 'Bama. He holds the ball far too long and his arm strength, especially on deep balls, is McNulty-esqe. I'd prefer to roll with Fine the rest of the year to see if he improves and is a possible answer. And if not, this staff better sign 3 or 4 QBs in February and hope like hell one of them can play. Lots of work to be done on the recruiting front. It'll be interesting to see if this staff can do better than the last in that area. Funny that the best recruiter UNT has seen as a head coach is Todd Dodge, isn't it?

So, what exactly is the upside in continuing to play Morris? Do you honestly still believe this is a bowl team?
