MGB: Recruiting state of the union -- it's too early to panic
UNT90 replied to Brett Vito's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I think the whole RV thing shows just how much you don't "just have to trust them." You hold them accountable every day. -
No one is calling for anyone to be fired, but we have seen this level of recruiting before and know to where it leads. I agree with you about waiting till February 1 to pass judgement, but that doesn't mean concern isn't warranted when a very active period of recruiting just passed with zero new commits. We shall see.

The question that should be asked is have UNT coaches been in local high schools that regularly produce talent in the last 2 weeks. If not, why not?
-
In response to the question in the thread title: Yes, very.

Here are some impressive wins for UTSA in the recruiting wars, including a couple over UNT: https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/181467 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/59215 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/180312 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/108856 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/39453 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/9841 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/181895 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/10217 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/14701 They are kicking our ass. Very thoroughly. All over the recruiting field. And not just because of one recruit. This needs to change before February.

This post got me curious to see how Fritz was doing recruiting wise. He has 4 three star recruits committed and 20 overall. He does have a better conference to bolster his recruiting efforts.
-
8 three star recruits, 21 overall.
-
You really need to be careful lest you will be vilified for not having the appropriate opinion...
-
Not surprised see to see the usual folks of this fan base being all happy about having an average recruiting class in a below average conference. And you wonder why you root for a losing university. Look in the mirror.

MGB: Michael Sewell Jr. talks about committing to UNT
UNT90 replied to Brett Vito's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Rah rah rah, sis boom bah. Nothing to see here, and if there is, just close your eyes and pretend. Be a good little UNT fan. ? Maybe there is something up, maybe there isn't, but this type of dismissing concerns outright is what got UNT 15 years of the Hattiesburg Hustler. -
MGB: Breaking news -- Goree finds new home
UNT90 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Not academic related. No effect on APR. *Unless both gave up on classes after suspension. -
Just used that route as an example. There were also deep crossing routes that were woefully underthrown with receivers open. Hopefully it's just an adjustment to the speed of the college game.
-
No, look at film. On many of these he was under no pressure. He has been beyond awful on sideline go routes, usually throwing pop ups that drift in short and out of bounds over the reciever's head. I am specifically talking about throws where he has set his feet with no pressure and failed to deliver the ball deep and on target. If you have any games recorded, go back and re-watch. One of the reason his numbers went down instead of up as the season continued is that opposing defenses realized they could suck their safeties up because we couldn't throw the ball deep. And this was not a receiver problem. This was Fine being unable to hit a deep target. And I don't mean unable to hit a deep target consistently, I mean at all. It has to be mechanics or adjusting to the college game, as I don't think it's an arm strength problem. I worry that coaching didn't fix it all year.
-
They made up half the crowd. Only semi joking here.

I went to this game last night. First and only game I'll attend this year. Several observations. The high dollar donor seats court side were maybe 20% full. Maybe. I hope Wren Baker takes a long, hard look at that. The pit crew is down to 14 students. That's right. 14. I know, I counted them. It wasn't hard to do. There is less than zero energy in the building. I've been to funerals that had more pep. Brice doesn't know how to use the body God gave him, having but one low post move, a fade away hook shot, that didn't go in all night. He could use a real coaching staff that knows how to develop players, especially the lost art of being a post player. Combs is a really good player and knows how to use his body down low. If Combs skills were contained in Brice's body, you would have an NBA 1st round pick in Denton. New scoreboard is nice, although it reports player fouls instead of rebounds, duplicating what can be seen on the old scoreboard while rebound stats are nowhere to be found. That should be changed to points and rebounds. It took me over 5 minutes to pay by credit card to buy a ticket. The ticket taking staff was uninterested in doing their job. Similar problem at the concession stand. Good thing we don't have 6,000 a night showing up, because from my experience last night, UNT isn't equipped physically or mentally with the staff they have to facilitate a good experience for a crowd of that size. I was hoping to see changes, I really didn't see any at all. Same ole same ole. It was a change to see a victory, even if it was over a sister of the poorer than us. Looking forward to when anyone else coaches this team. I saw the same Tony Benford I saw year one, constantly yelling things that don't matter at his players while the game is in motion. Trying like hell to act like he knows what he is doing. Oh, I did look at my old season ticket area directly behind the UNT bench. Not one of the people that used to sit there remain. And those were hard core folks. If any university out there needs instructions on how to kill a basketball program, they should consult with the University of North Texas, because they are the gold standard and are still administering the death blow every game Tony Benford is allowed to coach.

He started 2, maybe 3 games, not 9. And he was bad. Hope Mason develops like Mullens, but he really was the only option for the award.

MGB: Breaking news -- Goree finds new home
UNT90 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't know that Tee will ever get his s together. For his own sake, I hope he does. If players don't understand the reason for the dismissal, they are either dillusional or are too close to Goree and the other kid to be objective. Give it a year in their rear view and they will have a different perspective. -
Neither is acceptable. But, ya.
-
What worries me about Fine is his deep ball. He didn't hit a receiver In stride deep all year. Not once. Everything was underthrown. That concerns me. A lot.
-
Ya, facts are important. Well, to some of us. I hope Mason turns into Nick Mullens, but he got freshman of the year because there wasn't other competition. Plain and simple.
-
Name another freshman QB starter in CUSA? Calling me names? I'm sure nothing will be done, so feel free. GoMeanGreen.com, where even the mods participate in the Internet bullying...

And here we go. Mr. Rah Rah no criticism allowed makes an appearance. My post clearly said SO FAR. It was even capitalized. But for "fans" like you, any criticism of anything UNT, no matter how well deserved, is unacceptable and must be met with personal attacks. This is why UNT perpetually sucks. This attitude right here. Just smile and pretend everything is OK until the problem is so bad it ends up 66-7 Portland St. This pervasive attitude from regular fans through the high donor fans dooms this program. You ask for crap, you get crap. Right now recruiting sucks. That could change in the next month. It hasn't changed in the last 3 months. <patiently waits for GoMeanCerebus moderator's ban> 1 more win, to be exact. And Fritz competes at a much higher conference level than Littrell. For the record, I don't think we disagree that much. We are both concerned about recruiting but know we have to be patient and wait until February for the final result.
-
If we are counting on walk ons and guys with no other offers, get ready for a ton of 3-9 seasons. Beating people out for recruits matters. "Coach 'em up" is great and necessary, but talent wins 90% of the time. Again, this was the same thing said of the great DMac. We need to start winning recruiting battles. We need to get into area HS much more than we have been. UTSA is murdering UNT in recruiting right now. That's unacceptable. To a few of us, anyway. There is a reason UNT has been terrible forever.
-
I see this board making the same mistakes over and over and over again. I guess that means a lot here are insane. Recruiting with Littrell and staff continues to be a huge concern. I'm quite sure I will be tarred and feathered by the usual crowd who allow zero criticism of Littrell, but SO FAR recruiting has flat out sucked. Dan McCarney level sucked. But just like when Billy was warning us about McCarney, the usual excuses will be rolled out there and the people who point out the inadaquacies will be dismissed as disgruntled and bitter (like there isn't anything to be disgruntled and bitter about, lol). As to that kid who got offers from OU and OSU, I guess he got those offers AFTER he was given a 24/7 and Rivals page. Because we all know he sucked until that happened... ? If Littrell and staff don't pick it up, UNT will be looking for a new coach in 2 or 3 years. And it won't be because Littrell left for a better job. EDIT: Actually, the definition of insanity should be changed to "being a North Texas fan..."
