MGB: Firing Benford midseason would be a bad move for UNT
UNT90 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Don't rule out Brett just playing contrarian here. Don't forget the Daily called for Benford to be fired several days ago. Does anyone think Brett Vito is going to be the one to second the opinion of a lowly school newspaper? Hardly.- 61 replies

MGB: Firing Benford midseason would be a bad move for UNT
UNT90 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
That damn parking pass!... Well, keeping Benford is the wrong move if they ever want my business back at the Pit. That's all I know. Question for @Brett Vito. What if UNT pulls an 0-fer the rest of the year. Doesn't win one conference game. And UNT allows Benford to coach through the whole ordeal. How do you think that goes over with the fan base?- 61 replies

Strikes me as the type of guy we may have been able to get in 2012, but not in 2017.

NTD: It’s time for North Texas to fire Tony Benford
UNT90 replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Typical. Always accepting losing. -
No. Good Lord.

The problem I worry about is Benford winning a game he isn't supposed to and the powers that be doing the typical lazy UNT thing and saying "well, he won, so let's just let him coach it out." Right now there is zero argument basketball wise for his dismissal. Im really tired of rooting for losses in the hopes that the right thing is done. Only at UNT.

No, it isn't. We have two recent examples with DMac and Dodge. -

Nonsense. Did that happen when McCarney or Dodge was replaced? Of course not. The players would be relieved and I'd bet play a hell of a lot better. -
I really don't get what a bad basketball coach has to do with football recruiting. Keep in mind UNT will most likely be 0-9 in conference by national signing day, and the last big recruiting weekend may involve taking recruits to see a Benford led team in the 9th of those losses. At least if you fire Benford, there is some type of hope around the basketball team for those recruits to see. Letting this thing go to 0-9 will permanently do it for me and will affect my future giving to UNT athletics in general.
-
Do it Monday after the recruits have left town. Desperate times.
-
This is exactly correct. It says to all of college athletics that UNT doesn't give a damn about the men's basketball program. It surely sends that message to recruits. And if I'm battling UNT for a recruit, I would tell that recruit that if your coach at UNT is awful, you can't count on UNT to do the right thing. They would rather YOU suffer, would rather YOU lose, and would rather blame YOU for it than to take responsibility and make the hard decision. If Baker doesn't ax Benford tomorrow, I will be SEVERELY disappointed in Baker as an AD. Words and actions. Lots of the former, little of the latter so far.

If there isn't an announcement tomorrow, it is a pretty big indicator that it's business as usual at UNT. -
Tony Benford's picture as posted on meangreensports.com 10 minutes ago. I blame the Russians. <ninjaface>

I am holding Internet hands with you in this prayer.

UNT should be when he is kicking their tail on and off the field. Were they separated by 45 schools in the recruiting rankings? EDIT: my mistake. 41 positions per rivals: https://n.rivals.com/team_rankings/ And 36 positions per 24/7: http://247sports.com/Season/2017-Football/CompositeTeamRankings

2 of the 3 games the last 2 years have been at UNT. UNT lost by 11 in their only game during that stretch that was in Rustin, La. and that was last year. La Tech is better this year.
-
Only at North Texas. I seriously think the thought process by UNT leaders (not Baker, as he wasn't here yet) was "well, we will just cross our fingers and hope he can at least get to .500." Again, only at North Texas.

It has nothing to do wth SA, it has to do with your new staff being great recruiters. Personal relationships are about 1 million times more important in recruiting than what city a school is located in, whether it be a S hole like SA or a liberal arts Mecca (according to you) like Denton. That was my point. You weren't out-recruiting us with Coker. That's why he "resigned." It appears you made a better hire AT THIS POINT IN TIME. Enjoy. Because you still live in a Craphole and attended a Craphole university.

Did you read the article?

UNT is a 17 point road dog to La. Tech. SEVENTEEN!!!! Not to Duke. Not to North Carolina. But to a conference foe. Good Gosh.

You never know who has influence over a kid. Smart man. As of today, it appears UTSA made the better hire. They are going to be very hard to beat and are setting themselves up for a CUSA championship. We are recruiting like we did in the McCarney era. This HAS to change.

I think you would be surprised. What gets me is people on here (not you) thinking for some reason the players are loyal to Benford. To believe that, you would have to believe the players don't care whether they win or lose. I don't believe that. At all.
-
I get it, but you HAVE to do this for your players and your fans. Make the guy from UTSA interim coach. If Evans wants to fall on the sword, have at it. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. This team could do no worse by just rolling the ball out on the floor and playing street ball. Hell, they might be better.

It would greatly benefit those young men to lift the Benford Albatross off their back. I'd be willing to bet they win an additional 6 games if Benford is fired immediately after La Tech. Keeping Benford is what would be unfair to the players.
