1) You either get overtime, comp time, or it is rolled into part of your duty hours. You are compensated. 2) The lure of extra cash is hard to resist, especially when you are trying to provide the best environment for your family. Many officers have stay at home spouses and depend on the extra income to make up for being a one income family. It's kind of a double edge sword. I have a friend now that works about 25 hours a week extra so that his wife can care for both of their children, who are not yet in school. He plans on scaling back once both are in school and his wife can contribute a salary to the household.

Good post, except for the highlighted portion. Under that same logic, we would raise the driving age to 25 due to the amount of accidents that kill teen and early 20s drivers. Same irresponsibility, just a different mechanical tool used to inflict the injury. Do a comparison of how many teen drivers or passengers in cars driven by teens are killed each year compared to all deaths by accidental discharge of firearms, and I think you'll quickly find that this argument is moot. Don't mean to pick on you, but you are a good example of someone with no experience with guns having preconveived notions about firearm ownership. I can't blame you, as these notions have been pounded into your head by the anti-firearm media for the last 20 years. Your half way there. Come on over.

Dawson's girlfriend told police that Dawson was dealing marihuana. She would have no reason to lie about that.

That is a DPD rule. He can apply at other departments, but I doubt that he will. Also, when you resign under investigation, this is recorded by the state peace officer licensing committee and is reflected on your record when you attempt to get another law enforcement job. You can only do this once, the second time they pull your license to be a peace officer in the State of Texas. Maybe now the media will move on and he and his family can get some peace.

I'll take both A and B. Very sad but also very disappointed that a guy mentoring children would behave in this manner. Unfortunately, it appears he provided the ultimate life example.

Just a question. How many of those opposed to gun ownership or concealed carry laws have any experience with firearms (been to a firearms familiarity class, firearms range session, have actually fired a handgun or other firearm, or actually own a weapon)? It's been my experience that most people opposed to the 2nd amendment and concealed carry laws are extremely ignorant (dictionary definition) of anything pertaining to firearms. Just about any street cop (not a police chief...read-politician, and certainly not some FBI Dweeb) will tell you that he favors conceal carry. They will also tell you that they can't guarentee your safety.

This is just about always the case. Bad guy's training probably comes from playstation and is most likely to hold the gun sideways, while good guy, who is a responsible member of society, has attended training on how to use a firearm properly and practiced with said firearm to ensure that he is familiar with the firearm and can hit what he is aiming at. A little story. There was a convienance store by previous house. This store kept getting robbed. The owner finally got fed up and encouraged his store employees to OPENLY carry firearms while working. Two years later, no armed robberies and a huge decrease in theft from the store. Not one problem with the clerks and the guns. I prefer concealed carry for the general public, but definitly think some businesses, like convienance stores, benefit from having thier staff carry weapons openly. Notice I say previous house. This is why I moved to Granbury.

They have the neatest new little lazer sights for pistols. They attach to the sides of the pistol and allw you to shot at the lazer dot instead of using the sights, thus improving accuracy greatly. They are accurate to within an inch from 50 yards. As a side benefit, I have spoken to several officers who have had to point a handgun with this lazer sight at a criminal. The pyscological effect is much like the rack of a shotgun when they see that red dot on thier very own center mass. A great new tool, and cost a reletively cheap $200 (ballpark). Imagine how many stray rounds this would prevent in a live firefight situation.

Just wait for the posts that will say "this could never happen here". They are coming. The nations founders were smart enough to realize the power that government could wield against it's citizens, having seen it first hand. If you think that we are immune to a Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, or Saddam Hussein, you really need to study history. A quick comparison to Germany in the early 1930s and the US right now would show frieghtening similarities. Not saying it's going to happen, but to think it's not a possibility is foolish. I remember the movie Red Dawn, right after the Cuban general inhabits the town in Colorado, the first thing he does is send troops to the local gun stores to check all of the gun registration files for name and addresses of those who own guns, and then sends troops to those addresses to confiscate those guns (You'll never see that in niether Hollywood movie). Also, and trust me on this, local police are way to understaffed to protect you from criminals. State governments are realizing this more and more, allowing residents to protect themselves. A little history into how concealed carry came to be in Texas is below. Think of the VT shooting and you understand why this is under consideration. http://www.chron.com/content/chronicle/nat...2/gunside1.html

Damn...the one time I don't use spell check... It's obvious some on here have had a negative experience with police, thus clouding there judgement. The only reason I say this is because of the personal nature of some of the responses to posts that are niether personal nor confrontational. niether/nor? niether/or? Hell, I don't know

The word your looking for is disgression, not necessarily compassion. Disgression is learned through experience. Officers are trained to be very by-the-book nowadays because departments want to avoid civil liability. Officers learn disgression through experience. Some have it naturally, with some it takes time.

I heard that he was being offered a multi year deal for 35 million bucks. Kinda hard to turn that kinds jack down. Make that 8 years, $35 million. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4026848

I agree with you, except for the part about the 2nd officer, who I think could have done a WHOLE lot more to remedy the situation. The second officer never indicated that he thought the situation should be handled differently, he only repeated what the nurse said. If he would have pulled Powell aside and suggested that Powell handle the situation differently, we may not be having this discussion. But to say and do nothing and then run crying to a supervisor two days later is really weak. If they had been members of the same department, the second officer would be in just as much trouble as the first, if not more, because he most likely would have been senior officer on scene (assuming this from the second officer's age). He should not get a pass. You have to remember, although the officer shouldn't have got into a verbal standoff with Moats, there is no violation of policy in his actions. That was my point.

Sigh...it's not because you never worked as an officer, but because of what you have written on here. The family members of a criminal justifiably shot and killed by an officer almost always thinks that thier dead relative has been treated unfairly. Wouldn't you? Anyone who has ever been pepper sprayed or tasered would call that a terrible experience. I did see where Moats said on TV that he just wanted the officer to walk up to the room with him while issuing him the citation. Too bad Moats or the officer didn't offer this solution on the scene. Just goes to show how easy it is to second guess your actions after the fact. Both were in a head butting contest. We will just have to agree to disagree, as this is giving me tired head.

Pre-arranged, back room deal???

Technically, you are wrong. There is Mean Joe Green and there is the North Texas Mean Green. Or can you combine the two since he went to UNT.
