  1. People think Ohio State is a horrible fan base? Never heard that. And the Aggies?!? Really?? Aren't they generally all chanty/polite/Jesus-y/military? Not exactly the Aggie reputation to be f-bomby trash (every fan base has its garbage, of course). Nebraska fans suck? By what metric, exactly? Literally taking 2 seconds to find articles, this comes up: http://coedmagazine.com/2011/10/06/best-college-football-fans-list-poll/#photo=20 - which names Nebraska the single best fan base in college football - as do many (most?) writers and publications. You know the last time Nebraska didn't sell out a game? 1962. Kennedy was president. They're better than any fan base you mentioned times ten. Bottom line: In life, being a good human, polite to others, and representing yourself in a way that would make your university and your parents proud usually wins out over being a foulmouthed, low-IQ, prick.... but maybe that's just me. a fan base full of giant, knuckle-dragging giant d-heads doesn't guarantee success. Just ask Gerry DiNardo or Randy Shannon.
  2. Cockiest first post/username combo platter ever. +1.
  3. Some Greek traditions never die.
  4. UT is famous for being one of the worst home field advantages in the BCS.They're quiet, come late, and leave early. They're routinely called out on TV broadcasts for being silent and disinterested. Nebraska, meanwhile, is routinely considered one of the best home field advantages in the BCS. They're polite, cheer the other team on and off the field, and make visitors feel at home. They also love and cheer like crazy for their Huskers. Let's be tiny Nebraska, because they're better humans.
  5. If you mean bullpen, maybe. Ogando, anyway. Starters have actually been BETTER this series than the previous two, Harrison's bad start notwithstanding. StL is just better than DET and TB right now, and our offense was flat out anemic in StL.
  6. The Hill never even appeared to thin out much yesterday.
  7. Maybe there are two Metzler's locations? The one on the alumni side took cards just fine yesterday.... Jalapeño sausage wrap FTW
  8. That long ago??
  9. Yup. Ryan/Guyer draws as well as most any HS game in the metroplex. Entering Denton city limits doesn't fundamentally change folks THAT much.
  10. My college internship was with the Dallas Cowboys, but I got it while I was a student at North Texas. WHOA. META!!!1!!
  11. Ryan vs. Guyer will draw a load more than this game. There are two big time HS programs in Denton, and the Broncs ain't one of 'em right now. They just don't draw like the other two, and they don't have the support.
  12. That's all Dexter Tennell wanted, basketball boy. Look how that one worked out.
  13. Good Grief. Way to bring the party down.... just the mention of that movie... whew... most awkward thing ever? On further review, maybe "I'm champagne and you're s***" should be Glad to be Green's guns-blazing response to this thread? But,
  14. Best Lovitz: Master Thespian, the Liar, or Annoying Man? ANSWER THE HARD QUESTIONS!
  15. even though I think this schedule change is about as important and impactful as a fart into a pillow, I'll just say that if it's either/or, I'd rather have to miss a game/come late personally and NT have decent attendance and avoid a FAU situation instead of getting to make it and we have 12k.... but that's just me. Vito likes the move, every random unaffiliated spare I've talked to sees it as a smart, common sense no-brainer, and even if we have a few people hurt individually by the situation (which I feel for, I really do) the argument can not be made that this will HURT overall attendance... so if can only HELP NT overall, then..... why the issues?
  16. Okay, I completely agree with everything you said here. I thought you were implying that Garrett chose to run three times there because he didn't trust Romo... I just think it was over-conservative bonehead decision making, regardless of personnel.
  17. I don't think those 6 plays indicated Garrett has lost confidence in Romo. Romo had over 300 yards passing on 40+ attempts. Garrett just played it way, way too conservatively, trying to milk the clock and use up NE's time outs, like so many coaches before him. If anything, the conservative playcalling is far more a result of a lack of confidence in the undrafted rookie free agents all over the offensive line who continually make mistakes. The problem with this offense? NAGY-COSTA-KOWALSKI-SMITH. Not to say they're not doing the best they can (Smith has been pretty good, actually... but when you start rookies all over the line (not to mention Free & Kosier struggling and Dockery hurt) it's on the GM. It's probably the worst OL in football. We can't run, we can barely protect, we've been without our starting WRs til today - it's miraculous this offense has done ANYTHING.
  18. Undrafted Rookies all over the OL (that one's on the GM), zero running game to speak of (77 total yards?!?), and a defense that has a knack for playing lights out until the drive that really matters showing up yet again... Ouch. The biggest issue I have with today was Garrett's going over-safe into a shell with 2:30 to go. Murray into the line, Murray into the line, Choice on a draw. Really??? You haven't run all day. Your QB (this thread be damned) has over 300 yards passing. And you choose to run three times and give it back to Brady with a time out and the 2 minute warning left, only needing a FG to tie!?? Wow. I don't know what they teach at Princeton, but good grief...
  19. No hair trigger here... in fact, patience for the last coach was never a virtue I enjoyed. To my earlier post, your QB comment rings very true. If it's debatable whether we even have a FBS level QB on the roster, consider McCarney's ISU stint... he turned things around when Rosenfels and Wallace arrived on campus, and not a second before then. Wouldn't be surprised if history repeats here... want success? Land a QB who is far more than a serviceable game manager. Easier said than done, of course.
  20. Only examples on this thread are the guy we just played and the guy we almost hired, so I wouldn't say it's cherry picking. If it's me you're talking about, again, I don't want to give the impression I'm down on McCarney at all - just stating that different coaches rebuild differently. I'm sure there's a case study to be done on June Jones as well, but I care about that a lot less. From a very outsider perspective, It certainly seems Jones blew the thing up at SMU to get his system in place and it paid dividends by year two... but i don't think we're in quite the same blow up mode.. yes, we're playing freshmen (which is great, IMHO), but we have the same offensive system in place, so it's nowhere near the overhaul of Bennett to Jones (which is epic).
  21. Turnarounds happen at every level, and different coaches go about it different ways. As a point of reference, Texas State went 1-6 in the Southland last year. This offseason they hired Dennis Franchione (and some Diet Coke drinkin' dude named Darrell to run the offense), and they already have 5 wins (undefeated against FCS opposition - only losses to Texas Tech and Wyoming). If we wanted the quick turnaround, wanted the quick fix, this was our hire. We went another way... I believe that RV's feeling was that McCarney was a more solid long-term choice - it's either that or he was scared away by Fran's off field issues (marginal though they may be) or tendency to job-hop. Regardless, Texas State pulled the trigger we didn't, and by early returns, anyway, they're quite happy they did. The flip side, of course, is where TxSt is in five years. Will Fran be there? Historically, the answer is no - though if you're at a critical moment in your program's history and you need to win now (as they move towards FBS), I can scarcely imagine a better scenario for the Cats.... and they could have banked on this: In all his stops other than the A&M debacle, Fran has had his team at 7 wins or more within 1 or 2 years, regardless of what he inherited. It's all in style, of course. I'm assuming RV went with the more steady, slow-building, methodical McCarney. Most here felt this was a solid choice, and most still do. What many need to realize is that in our small sample size, McCarney is not the quick fix turnaround artist Fran is. He built Iowa State in a very different manner. Mac's first FIVE seasons at ISU: 3-8 2-9 1-10 3-8 4-7 Now, in his sixth season he broke out with 9 wins, and many argue that it's easier to get good quickly in the Belt (probable, but also consider the sliding scale affects ISU vs. NT as well as the conferences). Some would also point out that McCarney's big seasons were directly linked to the arrival of Sage Rosenfels & Seneca Wallace, which may give us an idea as to how important it is to excel at the QB position in this system. I think we all expect McCarney to do much better (much faster) here than at ISU. We all agree that if he duplicates his ISU win totals here, he'll never see the fifth season, much less the sixth. I just felt it's worth noting that this is what we bought - a lifer coach who has never been a part of a "quick" turnaround from the head coaching position. This is in NO WAY an indictment of the choice, mind you - I'm still feeling pretty good about where we are - I'm just putting out the idea that it seems RV & Co. was interested in other things beyond the "win now!" philosophy many are expecting to see from this staff. Fran was a win now choice. Mac is the kind of guy, historically, that may play freshmen and build things slowly - which is what we're seeing now... it just needs to move faster this time.
  22. They have 6 wins. If they lose out (no chance of that), they're 6-6 at worse. They're bowling in Lafayette... amazing turnaround.
  23. I think that deep down most people know what the new staff is up against, know that Rome wasn't built in a day, and know we hired a guy whose rebuilding resume consisted of a methodical, deliberate 5 year turnaround. What frustrates some in the moment, though - besides the elevated bitter taste on gameday - is seeing other schools on our level make hires that don't need "their guys" and a four year plan. Hudspeth, for instance, took over a team that was picked to finish dead last - behind NT, mind you - in just about every SBC preseason poll - most experts thought our talent level was on par with or above that of the Cajuns, and their first year coach, with no excuses or complaints, has his guys on the way to winning conference and they've clinched a bowl game. It was a similar feeling many of us had watching Cristobal and Stockstill go to bowl games and turnaround their programs in the first two years of the Dodge area... it just feels like we've seen this before, regardless of how kneejerky it is. Again, I'm not saying it's right. I'm not saying we're not improved. I'm not even saying it's how I feel personally. I just understand the frustration even in year one... and frankly, I welcome it. The facilities are in place. This staff has more than Dodge ever got to experience, and more than Dickey could have possibly imagined. It has more than similar staffs on our level that are outpacing us on the field. I get it. I'm not losing faith, but I get it. We need to finish strong.
  24. As it was pointed out last week on this board, Chico didn't call the plays once he became HC last year - you know, the moment the offense really took off. He's calling them again now. Food for thought, if nothing else.
  25. Someone here said that last year when Chico took over as HC the play calling duties went to someone else... does anyone know who that someone was, because young OL/Darius Carey or not, this doesn't look remotely similar in game plan or execution. Also, consider the case of teams like 2009 Oklahoma.. this is a different animal at home and on the road. Not the same team.
