I also attended and agree....RV needs to reward both Coach Lama and Coach Maren for their success. Second Sunbelt Championship in 3 years, 3.5 team GPA, national ranking. GO MEAN GREEN at the regional NCAA tournament!

North Texas Tennis 2012 Conference Champions!
Zeleny' Orel replied to CMJ's topic in Mean Green Athletics
Forgot to mention it was good to see the following supporting the ladies at the tournament: Dr. & Mrs. Rollins, Mr. & Mrs. C. Dan Smith, Coach Mac, Brett Vito, RV and probably others I didn't see. -
North Texas Tennis 2012 Conference Champions!
Zeleny' Orel replied to CMJ's topic in Mean Green Athletics
Observations after watching my first college conference tennis tournment: 1. College tennis is nothing like professional tennis--lots of yelling, coaching, movement of fans, and fun 2. No subbing for injury or bad day on the court--you start, you finish--not like other team sports 3. It is tense trying to keep track of singles on 6 courts at the same time to see if your are leading or behind in the team scoring 4. Clutch play coming from behind by Valentina Starkova on Saturday to keep us in the tournament 5. Clutch play coming from behind by Irina Paraschiv today to close out the championship today for the Mean Green 6. Congratulations to Paula Dinuta for being nameed the MVP of the tournament--if I remember correctly she won all her doubles and singles matches---very steady to keep us up in each match 7. Felt good to have 3 seniors on the court in the final three matches today--felt like they could battle in the matches to the end--as they needed to 8. The doubles point is very important and we seem to be the masters of starting off with a point from the doubles round 9. FIU had been to the finals the last 8 years--they beat us in the semis last year and we beat them in the finals for the championship in 2010---has become a big rivalry 10. It helps to have former basketball great Kenneth Lyons behind your court leading the cheers and motivating you--come back anytime Kenneth! 11. Coach Lama and Coach Maren have done as great job with these girls, as has Coach Troy--I believe our fitness wins several of those third set matches There were lots of fans in green out this week rooting for the girls and the home court advantage certainly came into play at critical times. If you ever get a chance, come out to the matches. You will be surprised at how much you will enjoy it. So, congratulations Kseniya (Fr), Paula (Sr), Nadia (Sr), Irina (Sr), Illona (Jr), Franziska (Fr), Valentina (Jr) and Barbora (Jr). All of you played a big part in the team victory, so......... ON TO REGIONALS....GO MEAN GREEN! This post has been promoted to an article -

Have watched the team play several times. They are a great group of girls who play a "mean" brand of tennis. It is no accident they have moved up in the rankings over the years....good coaching and quality athletes make for a good team. Good luck the rest of the year and "Go Green"

I also enjoy Coach A's post-game interviews. It is refreshing to hear the truth about the game, both good and bad. It gets old having the coaches say the same thing week end and week out, "we played (or will play) a good, talented team." This could be a team without any wins or a team with 10 wins....you get the same line each time. At least, with Coach A, you get a true picture of the game and the play of the team. GMG Ladies....keep it up!

Women play UALR on Wednesday at 7:00 to open conference play. Anyone know the status of Godboldt's injury?

These are the three things that most impressed me about tonight's game: 1. The basketball pep band is the best it has ever been....they keep the spirit going and are fun to watch and listen too....they were great at last night's women's game also 2. The students were also great tonight...lots of them and very vocal...I noticed RV gave them recognition toward the end of the game...we just need to get these same students out to support the women's team 3. The massive dunk by Jordan Williams...I can't remember seeing a more impressive one in my 45 years of watching UNT basketball....it was just tremendous! Came with about 9 minutes left in the game and really got the crowd into it after that show GMG and good luck to the Mean Green Ladies tomorrow afternoon...they have another tough opponent on the road

Or at least a mention under the Basketball Forum notes along with Johnny Jones....we do have women's basketball at UNT! It might be worth noting there..... -

Will we be in the running for one of the best turnaround season records in the country? What a great beginning for a coach in her first year...stay tuned! -
Lady Mean Green vs New Mexico
Zeleny' Orel replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Had to work and wasn't able to make tonight's game. However, made it to UTA last Friday night instead of men's game against St. Gregory's. I thought the women's game would be more competitive...it was for a half and then it was all Mean Green! Two observations: 1. The ladies better be in good physcial shape or they won't be on the court long 2. Mental mistakes won't be tolerated....will be pulled out of the game quickly and talked to Tough choice for next Tuesday: Men vs. UTA at Arlington or Women vs. SMU in Denton...wish they were on different nights! These conflicts in scheduling make if difficult to support both teams. -
Espn Whacking Wac Tv $$$ For 2011

Anyone know what next year's SunBelt TV package is worth? -
Work prevented me from going to the tournament this year, but I have been listening to the games. I think this may be JJ's best coaching of the year. He definately has the team motivated. Both games started with us being in a hole, we were shorthanded on the bench, and in foul trouble. Yet, we finish the game with toughness and without our players fouling out. Also, there has been an important player off the bench--Knox last night and Edwards tonight. Good coaching keep backup players ready. Of course, the credit has to go to the team as well--they are playing hard and not getting discouraged after being behind at the beginning of games. They are playing like the winners they are! GO MEAN GREEN....two down, two to go!

Still NTSU to Louisville writers....will it ever end?
-
Thanks...there are some of us who care and get very little news on the women's team. I know they have not done well in recent years, but they are still "our team" to support.
-
Agreed...these seniors deserve our thanks and our support Saturday night. In our "what have you done for me lately" society, it is easy to remember the last few months of disappointing basketball. But we also need to remember that these guys have moved UNT up a notch or two over the last 4 years and deserved to be remembered for that as well. So, everyone come on out and support the seniors! GO MEAN GREEN....

It's been a long time since I felt this way, but I'm actually looking forward to football season. The last few years it's been the other way around. This team has just broken the heart of many a Mean Green Fan who didn't see it coming!
-
So is the match tiebreaker the first to 10 points, with a 2 point lead?
-
Please explain the 3rd set scoring system in singles results...it doesn't look like a tiebreaker or traditional 3rd set score. I see that doubles is pro set scoring, but am not aware of a set score such as 10-5.

Brings back memories of being a student on campus when we had really good teams, with many players going on to the pros. Unfortunately, I didn't appreciate the talent level at the time. I don't think it's ever been better....hopefully Coach MAC can bring us back.... GO MEAN GREEN!

I would guess that most of us season ticket holders who live outside of Denton don't get to attend all the games anyhow...especially those at 7:00 on weeknights. We buy our season tickets more as a donation to the cause rather than worrying about getting something for each dollar we spend. I am more hopeful that there is a crowd to support the Mean Green tonight from people who can make the drive (walk) than I am about getting something back for my 2 tickets tonight. Even the students pay a set fee for the year whether or not they get to go to all the games. Let's look at the big picture! I'll be listening on the radio tonight and hope that I hear some fan noise in the background!

Missed going to the Mean Green Room tonight, but I agree...Prairie House is my favorite provider

Green Joe, I believe you are correct...I went to two games in Reno and I believe it was the game when Dennis Parker was coaching that involved us not being able to take off for several hours due to the weather. It was really nice being able to fly on the team charter in those days.
