The 1959 North Texas State Eagles won their first 8 games including a 12-0 victory over the Wichita Shockers at Fouts Field in Denton. The Eagles finished 9-2 and played in the Sun Bowl. Star running back Abner Haynes finished 7th in the nation in rushing. Haynes and teammate Leon King were the first African-Americans to play college football in the state of Texas when they played for North Texas in 1956. Haynes went on to a remarkable career with the Kansas City Chiefs and his number was retired in 1988. His number 28 is also retied by North Texas. MEGALOCKS Outlook: This just might be CRAP OR GET OFF THE POT time for Seth Littrell. They showed promise a few years ago with back-to-back nine-win campaigns but have stubbed their toes the last two seasons. They look to have one of the better offenses in C-USA yet again but thinking about that defense keeps us up at night. The high-water mark is probably bowl eligibility by the skin of their teeth. I don’t have an opinion one way or the other but didn’t the governor say we didn’t have to wear one if we were vaccinated? Isn’t he the law of the state? This whole thing is so confusing!
