As a writer I am a fan of good writing. Maybe I should have said Dent's writing was simple and very basic. By telling a good story in an interesting way you enhance the reading experience. Dent doesn't do that. In fact large portions of the book read like he is trying to sell it as a screen play. The story itself is compelling. I've known about the Mighty Mites for a long time and this gives us a look inside the orphanage which has always facinated me, but he smoothed out a lot of wrinkles in his book and made those kids look more like the "Little Rascals" as they were referred to and only aluded to the severe trauma many of them suffered from. The traumatized nature of their lives and "caloused atttitudes" as he refers to them was the secret to their sucess. Also, the real Rusty Russell was a far more complex man that the one Dent portrays. As for the inaccuracies some of them are glaring and the huge gaps in Hardy Brown's story as well as the stories of several others are pretty bad. Still, I enjoyed it. I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood jumped on it. As a period piece it would be expensive to produce but i'd like to see it. Rick, as a Ft. Worth boy, wouldn't you rather see a movie about Joe Don Looney?

I received that book for Christmas as well and I also finished it last night. It is not a well written book and it is full of errors but the story is so compelling that it is interesting. I met Dewitt Coulter in the 1980s through his daughter in Houston and a nicer man you will never meet. We used to talk about Masonic Home as well as his days in the pros. I bought several pieces of art he did for the CFL. He died just last October. Funny thing about the book is that Dent missed the story of Hardy Brown's reunion with his mother in Tulsa that's why he chose to go to college there. Hardy Brown was one of only two men to play in the NFL, AFL, CFL and the AAFC.

Chance To Help Some Deserving Footballers.

Sorry, but I could not care less. -
There was a time when so many Texas high schools ran option offenses that it was hard to find a passer to recruit. Now everybody runs spreads and passers are falling from the trees like leaves. Wish more would stay in state and not run off to places like Georgia.

And Here's What Is Wrong With College Football Today

If you want to reform college football to close the gap between the rich and poor then do it through the NCAA rules committeee by instituting limited substitution. That would usher in a single platoon system that would cut costs and spread the talent out even wider and force colleges and universities to recruit a different kind of player. That and cut the number of bowls down. But the effing government should keep its bungling hands out of it. -
It's a good hire. Will the ponies go to the option?

If I were SMU -- and I'm not -- I'd stay as far from Ricky as I could.

Rick nailed it. If sorry-ass Kansas and K-State can be dragged off the mat, Baylor sure as hell can. Waco sits in the middle of some good bluechip producing territory and Briles has some good things to sell recruits.

I agree, Briles should bring Baylor back to life.

Sources: Texas A&m Expected To Name Sherman As Coach
Varsity replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
Urban? Just say black. And the Aggies don't "goose step." Geez, you've got me defending A&M. -
I'm no Fran fan but the guy won at New Mexico and TCU back when they were coaching graveyards themselves. If SMU lands him, he could be just what the doctor ordered.

Congrats Tech. Way to win.

I second that.

God forbid something athletic should sound warlike.

Being a fan of triple option football, I watched the Navy-Delaware game and the Middies are scary with that triple option. They run it out of a variety of sets and sometimes send linemen around as carrier escorts (Navy talk). They can throw the ball and are amazingly good at the quick strike. They are a very good football team on both sides of the ball. As a former DE and Veer fullback I can tell you the option is all-out scary. You can play your assignment perfectly but if the guy behind you or the up the gut misses his, it's all she wrote. P.S. Look for Navy senior fullback Adam Ballard #22. He's listed as being from Lewisville but the broadcasters said he told them that he grew up 10 minutes from the UNT campus.

Look at Kansas and Missouri this year, both are solid teams and one of them will go to the Big 12 championship game. But think about what they were four, even two years ago. Both have slowly grown into solid, good teams while their fans have pissed and moaned like spoiled brats. UNT football is at the beginning of a long, hard journey that should pay off several years in the future. In the meantime, it's gonna hurt. But nothing worthwhile is easy.

Here's A Controversial Topic For This Board
Varsity replied to the real grad88's topic in Mean Green Football
God bless you, real grad. I love the running game because it is the essence of offensive football. A solid, well-functioning ground game is as much of a defense as it is an offense because it drains the clock and leaves behind scortched earth (field position, field position, field position). But you have to have all the elements in place (good defense, sound kicking) to win titles. I would love to see the Wishbone, Veer, Wing-T, Side Saddle T come back to football The idea that football is cyclical is not true. Styles are cyclical but football remains essentially the same game it has always been, at least since Pop Warner modified the rules. The biggest changes are substitution rules and pass defense rules. -
Those are his daughters.

Actually that Arkansas station is sending a sketch artist to the game with the sketches to be shown periodically throughout the broadcast day .

The Hogs Are Talking About Coach Dodge
Varsity replied to Charlie NT 73's topic in Mean Green Football
I've heard the Arkies called many things but never civil. If the Mean Green were more of a threat to whupping their asses you'd see a whole new side to the Hog Callers. Texas fans have had everything thrown at them up there but the bathroom sink and that's only because the those Ozark Ikes haven't discovered indoor plunbing yet. -
Sorry, but the greatest player ever to come out of Texas was Sammy Baugh. Baugh was incredibly versatile and was not only the game's first modern passer but also a star defensive back and ace punter as well. He was likely the best football player of all time (yes, better than Jim Brown).

Miami's fan support has been described as being a mile wide and an inch deep. Even in their heyday they only sold out against the big names. Should the Hurricanes fall on hard times via a few losing seasons the masses will stay away from the stadium
