Sorry, but this is nuts. As others have pointed out, too many high schools in Texas run this offense to not run at least some of the schemes. We'd effectively knee-cap our recruiting efforts. The problem has been pairing a defense first mindset along with it. Seems like Lincoln Riley finally has turned a corner at USC. That gives me hope that maybe we can do the same, eventually.

🔥🔥🔥Official UNT vs Texas Tech IN-GAME DISCUSSION🚨🚨🚨
TIgreen01 replied to Cooke County Kid's topic in Mean Green Football
This is maybe the worst take I’ve seen on the board. Football revenue pays for the athletic department. Cut its budget and you’ll wind up hurting all sports…and then the basketball revenue, which is much smaller, has to pick up the slack. You’ll wind up cutting into basketball without realizing what you’re doing. What you really want is more money put into the total budget, with basketball getting a bigger share of that increase. Maybe recruit more basketball specific donors or income streams. Not at the expense of football, though. That would be counterproductive. We got absolutely embarrassed today. It was made worse because we got our hopes up after Tech struggled in their first two games. But we don’t play defense here anymore. So until that changes, adjust your expectations accordingly and keep your emotions in check. This crazy take of just dropping the sport is a bad look. -
I don’t know. Kinne at Texas st plays aggressive defense. Complementary defense. We simply whiffed on the Littrell firing. Once he made it past October and on to the conference championship we should’ve just kept him another year. Kinne would’ve been a much better hire but we waited too long and he was already snatched up. Maybe he was never even on our radar. All I know is that we need a coach that fields a complete team and prioritizes fundamentals over gimmicks. We don’t do the little things right and that’s adds up.

🔥🔥🔥Official UNT vs Texas Tech IN-GAME DISCUSSION🚨🚨🚨

Yep, I’d rather beat them with Brooks than without. No excuses now. -
On a one game grade, Morris looks to be an upgrade. Rogers was great. Morris will have to show consistency and stay healthy, but it is possible that both are true…Rogers was a great QB for us, but Morris may be even better. Great problem to have.

***OFFICIAL UNT vs. SOUTH ALABAMA IN-GAME DISCUSSION***
TIgreen01 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
After watching Colorado last night, I’m not as hopeful that we’ll see a night and day defensive improvement. They were running right with us last year for the coveted spot of worst defense in America. Then they overhauled the dline with transfers this offseason. Talent looked improved but cohesive they were not. Thinking we likely see something similar. There will be growing pains, but still hoping to see some positive signs of progress tomorrow. -
Without a doubt, the #1 thing sapping my interest this year...even though we're benefitting, ourselves, from pulling from the lower divisions. The business side of the sport taking over front and center is what all the talking head media people have wanted for years, but not the overwhelming majority of the actual fans of the sport. When business takes over, the fun runs out.

No doubt that Saturday of the LaTech game was the single best atmosphere and environment I've ever seen around a UNT football gameday. Don't forget we unveiled the Mean Joe statue and had a big presentation for that with a bunch of NFL HOFers in attendance only a couple of hours before kickoff. Then that NORTH TEXAS chant in late 3rd qtr or 4th on a LaTech 3rd down (where we then sacked the QB and forced a punt)....man I still pull that clip up on my phone and get chills. Then we got the field goal blocked and news broke that next week that Seth was talking to KSU....and it all went downhill from there. But you're right....Seth owns the all-time highest emotional moment where it actually felt like we might just break through.

Call me crazy: I am saying we go 8-4! Great season!
TIgreen01 replied to JT Hammons's topic in Mean Green Football
There is no doubt that the schedule is weak. The problem is that we return 5 players from our offensive 2-deep. If NIL and transfer portal weren't a thing, maybe I could get on-board. We'd be returning a pretty salty team, at least offensively. Now the QB we have running things might possibly be even better than last year....but with a completely rebuilt offensive line, RB and WR corps....who knows if he'll be able to showcase that talent. I think the hope/trust is there that Morris will field a solid offense, but it's got to be great to overcome the defense... or the defense has to have made a huge leap forward in the offseason. My expectation is that we will struggle in the first half of the season while we break in so many new faces on offense. Expect to lose games that we should otherwise win. Could realistically be 1-3 or 0-4 heading into conference play. Then we get one warmup against Tulsa before having to face FAU, Memphis and Tulane. All three of those teams will have better talent than we do and should be favored against us. We better have it worked out by then or this season could be a real mess. -
It really all just comes down to his defense. If we field the worst defense in the country again, or even in the bottom 5-10, and it costs us a winning record, then it needs to be over and we need to move on. That's not a generality, but specific to this situation at North Texas right now because of what happened last year. You cannot inherit a bowl team, immediately miss a bowl in your first season while fielding the worst defense in the country, then choose to run it back and get the same results. Morris' offense looked legit last year. Even better than Littrell. He immediately upgraded the QB talent, which is huge. But Littrell constantly fiddled with the defense when it sucked. It didn't always yield great defenses, but he changed coaches and schemes when it was obvious things weren't working. As a HC, so far, Morris is whiffing on one side of the ball. Hopefully his trust in Caponi and this scheme is paid off for all of our sakes. I don't want to watch that 2023 defense ever again.

He graduated college in 1940. His professional career had to be over by the mid-80s. Was our pipeline to Denton crappy back then? Or are you just remembering the past 20 years or so?

Utah coach believes the Big Split is coming = Super Conferences
TIgreen01 replied to NT80's topic in Conference ReAlignment
Sorry, what I meant is why couldn’t they just play their own in-conference rivals twice a year (once home, once away, every season) if the goal is to keep home games high. Who’s to say they play ANY OOC games in the future if all conferences are guaranteed spots in the playoff? -

Why couldn't they just play each other home AND away? (obviously depending on limiting divisions to manageable sizes) -
NCAA College FB 25 UNT... Anyone playin?

How did I miss that Scrappy was missing!?! I’m embarrassed. -
So...East Carolina is what you've got. That's the one school on your list that supports well while historically not winning. Navy numbers are confusing as they probably get to count the Army-Navy game that draws 65k+. The rest of those are not what I'd call drawing good attendance. Better than UNT? Yes. Good? No.
-
Welp, that's not good news for us. We don't stack the box. Ever. Under any circumstances. Your RBs will set season records. Write it in ink. Having said that, we're hopefully still starting Chandler Morris by then. If he's still upright we will have enough offense to stay in the game. Getting Tech the week before is not great timing.

Got it and love it, so far. They have done a remarkable job of nailing the gameday atmosphere at DATCU. We even have the chants included....both the North Texas Fight and plain ole great North --- Texas! Fans do the claw and crowds look almost identical to real life when we play the smaller, more unknown schools. Looks like both the new unis and all the odd combos we've had over the past few years are included, as well (except the flying worm 😞). Only thing really missing is the cannon after we score. -
Name them. This is positive, in my book. Still hate NIL, but at least we're not standing pat and doing nothing. That's better than where I thought we were, literally, yesterday. Now, hope this guy can fundraise like the last SLC product we had in here. Dodge couldn't win, but he dang sure could recruit (players, donors, excitement).

The best line from that article that sums up my feelings was this one... " the essence of sports is everyone starting at the same spot." Hasn't been that way for a while in FBS, but up until NIL we at least had some schools trying to do it the right way. This is my biggest gripe, as well. We're all getting screwed over royally in the G6. All the angst and apathy that we are all feeling can be harnessed and weaponized...but all these school administrators seem to be more worried about burning bridges with potential employment options. The schools who are stepping up have alums stepping up and taking things into their own hands. SMU, as much as I hate their friggin guts, is a perfect example. Here at UNT, I think we're all waiting for someone to step up and save us instead of using our collective size as a means to influence our situation positively. SMU took the easy way out, one rich donor was all they needed. We are going to have to pull together to make enough noise to force the change. I don't expect our AD or President to do much unless we hold their feet to the fire.

If you can accept we are a minor league now

Really have to stop with the crap about liberal arts. I was in the school of business, but literally all the rest of my tailgating crew was in some form of the arts or teaching. Common thread is that we all played sports growing up and care about sports. Most of those kids now go to “football” schools. I have no clue what we’re doing in the admissions department but I’m sure there is a certain profile that is more likely to be engaged on campus, with sports and that will end up as a donor. Start there if you want to see change.
