I think it may be the smallest crowd in some time. A 6pm game is going to be hard to attract the casual fan to...and I think that some on the home side won't bother to fight traffic to make it to a game that will be on tv anyways. That said, I could care less how many are on the home side b/c it'll be the student/visitor side of the stadium that will be immediately visible due to the camera angle that ESPN will be using. We'll have a good student turnout, I predict....but we should also just force people over to that side of the stadium so it looks better on tv. Remember watching the FAU-OKst game a few weeks back? The default game camera showed that there was almost nobody on the visitor side of the field.....however, when they showed the home side(rarely) of the stadium it wasn't that bad. The AD should seriously try something like closing off certain sections of the stadium so that the crowd has to bunch up. The SunBelt needs us to do everything we can to help the league and I truly think that it makes a game more watchable when you flip the channel to it and see that there are actually people in the crowd who care about the game too.

Really? What's UCLA doing these days? That staff could be gone very soon with the way they are giving up LA to USC....
-
I would feel alot better about DD's staff if we could somehow hire this guy back....or a clone of him. Can we seriously not afford this guy anymore?? Seems like we ought to be able to spend some money on our dang coaching staff.
-
Seriously?? OUCH. I have the same feeling in my stomach about this team as I did back in 2001 after the ULM loss. Only now we're 7 years into DD's tenure instead of 3. We are not very good. The players turned around that season and the next 4 years....will it happen again? Do we have another Scott Hall on the team? Andy Brewster? Booger? Guys that just refuse to lose?
-
...and we didn't play Tulane this year, either. 'NoMoreSBC' is NOT from North Texas. TROLL ALERT!!!
-
Did you listen to the game?? We got torched in the 2nd quarter for 28. Before that, KState went up and down the field but failed to put up many points. The D is bad and has gotten worse every year since 02. We are caught out of position way too many times. If you can't see that just watching the games, then I don't know what else to say.
-
Honestly, sending DD on his way right now would NOT help the program. Firing a coach coming off 4 straight conference championships and bowl seasons would do nothing but bring MORE NEGATIVE publicity our way. As pitiful as we are in OOC, we are pretty much stuck with DD. Yes, I'm tired of it as well but we might as well quit the crying and complaining until we've not won a conference championship for ONE year.
-
I'll go on record saying we need to include the DEFENSIVE coordinator as well. Our D is awful.....AWFUL. We make no adjustments....we used to do this....Can we not hire DeLoach back??...good grief I miss that guy.
-
The worst penalty I saw was the roughing the punter call....the guy shanked the punt so maybe he did get hit, but you're right---a replay was never shown(or did I just miss it?)...which is odd in this game b/c they've shown replays on nearly EVERY play.

Up to over 470 yds of offense for TSU--with 8 minutes to go.....where'd this QB come from?? He's AWESOME....well, I wish we had him.

Dang good research! A lot of people on this board put very little stock in the rivals recruiting rankings, but I think that there is something to them...esp. the numbers that you pointed out. 72 - 45 is a BIG gap. I think that DD has established a reputation as a recruiter of hidden talent, but at some point you have to start recruiting some of these highly ranked kids--if for nothing more than to get some good press and create some buzz among other kids/coaches....that and the fact that most of them are highly ranked for a reason. I also think that the rankings, as they pertain to lineman, are usually not far off. We RARELY land a heralded Olineman or Dlineman. To run the power running game that DD likes, we need to be landing more powerful linemen....not just BCS caliber backs(though you have to start somewhere ). Now, I don't mean to take anything away from our players. The absolute best players we've had here in the last 5 years came in as mostly unheralded recruits. Jonas Buckles was the highest ranked recruit I can ever remember us getting before we landed Jamario Thomas.

Good post. I have one problem with it, though.....if we are STILL not "recruiting athletes anywhere near as good as Tulsa" (and other OOC opponents) after 4 straight bowl wins, who's to say that we ever WILL? Do kids want to come play the style of football that is played at UNT under DD? What about at Boise St. under Dan Hawkins? They were our equal a few short years ago....anybody know where their recruiting classes rank? Are they still recruiting Big West/Sun Belt caliber athletes but win more b/c of their creative gameplans?? Having watched them on tv several times they don't appear to be much more talented than UNT, but they run all over the field and create mismatches by confusing their opponents. To me, that is a better recipe for success at the mid-major level...mid-majors can't just line up and run the ball against BCS caliber opponents...heck, you have a hard time doing that unless you are more talented than the opponent--which is why we win the Sun Belt every year. Thoughts??

DMN Brandon Monroe to start at middle LB
TIgreen01 replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Could this be one of the shakeups that DD promised after last Saturday's game?? Sure seems like it. I, also, don't understand why T. Thompson hasn't played at all....I didn't get to go to the scrimmages to see him in action but everyone on the board was all in a tizzy about how good he was.....what's the deal there? Anyone know? -
Yes we can still compete. We need a QB who can throw the deep ball out there to Quinn---and esp. Nwigwe. Quinn can still catch a duck hail mary pass, but the play that we're lacking is the laser throw out to Nwigwe 30-40 yards downfield. We have yet to utilize the speed of our WRs and I think that's b/c the coaches don't have any faith that Meager can get it out there. Hopefully they give someone else a shot (no offense to Meager). Oh...and it'd be GREAT if a run stuffing DT would suddenly show up to save our interior Dline....

If JaMario is hurt why doesnt anyone come out
TIgreen01 replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Football
Didn't he have a hamstring issue all of 2004? Not trying to be snide, but I thought he got hurt at Baylor, but pretty much played the rest of the way b/c we didn't have a better option....I mean, he sat out the Ark St. game b/c of it as well.... -
Dickey also coached Flannigan his last year at SMU....but yes, we ran the same offense before Flanigan got here. I would ask why are we starting every series with a passing play? In both games this year it has failed and we are then stuck in a 2nd and long situation--to which we usually respond with a run, and then run play-action on 3rd and long after the run gets stuffed. What are we trying to accomplish with the first down passing? We have 2 great running backs and an Oline that appears to not be able to pass block very well, but run blocks adequately enough....what's the thought from the coaching staff?
-
Any reason why you don't just post that on the board?? Seems like more than just MGR subscribers would benefit. Also, you mentioned not wanting to go into the details, but why not?? That's what I'm hoping to get from the MGR---that and good pics!

They have picked a horse....Cobbs. Thomas has had 17 carries in 2 games.
-
Um...George Dunham hands it to him, but the comment by DD that "we still have the most difficult situation to overcome of anyone in the conference.....I know, I work here EVERYday" should be enough to get him fired. Enough is enough. There is not one alum/student/faculty/administrator that wants to here that crap. If I walked around telling people that my job was the worst job ever, I'd be asked to leave. So should he. SERIOUSLY, when is this going to end?
-
Nobody's jumping off the Mean Green bandwagon---at least not any that post or are regulars here. This board is where the diehards congregate. Plumm, you of all people should know that. Am I tired of the gameplan? Yes, but I've been coming to every single game for the last 9 years and it's not going to keep me from coming again. I'll still be there sitting in old Fouts at the end of the year...just like everyone else here. What we lose with continuous losses like the Tulsa loss are the fence sitters. Screw em....they'll be back when we start winning again. If we've got players talking like you say above then we need to clear them out of here---because they were only fence sitters as well.
-
We'll lose to at least 1, if not both Florida schools, and beat everyone else. I'm betting that the Florida schools stumble against someone in conference and we wind up winning it again.
-
Good. I hope he uses the same mentallity on the players who continue to get personal fouls called against them...
-
Hmmm....weren't we saying the same thing about the 2004 NO Bowl loss? SMiss used a host of blitzes that we never adjusted to. Again, we have run the EXACT same gameplan for 8 years. We don't gameplan to the opponent. We just go out and run our offense--problem is, our offense has never been that good....it is really just that simple.
-
No "knee jerk" here. I have been watching this same sorry gameplan of DD's for what seems like forever (what is it?--7 or 8 years?). I've defended it before (yes, this gameplan will win the Sun Belt most years), but I'm getting tired....
-
I'd just like to see a gameplan that can be recognized as tailored to take advantage of the the opponents weaknesses. Flanigan is not the problem here guys and gals. We run the EXACT same offensive gameplan from week to week, season to season...and have done this since DD got here. If anything we've added a few more plays to the playbook since Flanigan was named OC. Basically we're going to come in to every game with the intention of running the ball. When that's not working, we throw a deep ball off play-action to loosen up the D. If that doesn't work, then it's over. For a few years there (01-03--the Booger/DeLoach years) we had a D that could turn a game for us. Now that we have no D, we're pretty easy to coach against. The sad thing about last night was that our running game was stuffed with basically only 9 guys on the field. Tulsa lined their FS up 20 yards off the line of scrimmage and manned up on JQ, effectively double covering our deep play-action threat so the front 9 didn't really have to worry about anything but run stuffing and getting to the QB.
