Look at the characteristics broken out by top5/bottom5. Supports athletics is UNANIMOUSLY in the bottom 5--and in most cases is #1 (or DEAD LAST!)....even in the Alumni/Friends section....if only 720 identified themselves in this category (what most on this board would have done), I have a HARD time believing that the ranking was so low....unless there was a group of people who all ranked it dead last.... What I also thought was crazy was that "Supports UNT's renewed emphasis on an active residential campus" ranked in the bottom 5 for Student responses. Apparently we surveyed a bunch of commuters???!?!?! I hate these kinds of surveys....to easy to manipulate. I hope Bobby Ray sticks to what he said...and doesn't allow us to hire someone who would match these "stats"...

"The UNT community did not feel that the future president would have to support UNT’s renewed emphasis on competitive athletics programs" What a load of crap. Here we go again...

We're going to have to agree to disagree. I don't remember our running game ever really opening up until we started to show that the play-action was dangerous.

Plumm, Basically what I'm reading in your posts is that you have turned on Bobby Ray simply b/c he supports DD, who you detest. If the situation was flipped and RV was the one "going hunting" with DD and saving his job, I get the feeling you'd be against him too--regardless of all the good that he's done in the last 5 years. -
Our defense stunk last year, too....just not AS bad as this year. Though I'll agree that our 'D' was the biggest problem with this year's team. A better 'D' would have made allowances for the new QBs as it did for A. Smith in 2002. Maybe I should have directed my last post as "the biggest problem with our offense"....b/c I still say that was the drop off in QB efficiency. The Oline was overwhelmed all year b/c the opposing 'D' didn't have to respect the pass. A. Smith would have helped that.

Here's the thing I don't get..... Plumm does not trust Bobby Ray....an alum of UNT. Plumm wants to trust RV....no ties to UNT before he was hired as AD. Why bash a UNT alum over RV? I like RV and feel that the guy does a great job, but when it comes down to nut-cutting time...Bobby Ray is one of us. What gives, Plumm? -
It really is tough to see exactly where the problem was...the oline or the QB play....but I'll just refer back to B.H. (Before Hall) and A.H. (After Hall). Our offense this year STRONGLY resembled the DD offenses B.H....we had a running game, but it wasn't that good....Jaquay Wilburn barely broke 1000 yards a season back when we ran the ball 90% of the time. A.H. our passing effeciency shot through the roof (also happened with A. Smith at the helm), which helped open up the running game and only A.H. did our running game REALLY take off. ....so, I'm going to go with QB play as the biggest area of concern on this year's team....and having watched Zac Taylor---let's just say he would have helped. I am also not totally convinced that the QBs we have now should be overlooked for next season....didn't we go 2-9 in Hall's freshman season where he split time with R. Bridges? These freshman we have showed signs....who knows whether or not they'll close the gap next season or if it'll take longer.

Yes, your friend is a schmo....probably also went to SMU at some point?? Seriously, if the only thing to be concerned about is getting CONSISTENT NATIONAL PRESS, we are a LONG way off. We got our first USA Today cover in how long this year??? Settle down...we had a bad year. It sucked....but you'd be blind to not see the strides that UNT has made in the last 5 years. We will be back...and if DD can't get us there, it sure sounds like the administration is ready to do what is necessary (from RV's comments in the DMN today). Now....everyone take a deep breath and start rooting for ASU to win the NO Bowl...the Sun Belt NEEDS a WIN in this game.
-
A token firing?? You didn't even see a token suspension for RF's actions....

What happened to TJ Covington on Saturday?....he gets burned on 1 TD, then rides the bench the rest of the day?....was he hurt? Oh....and I'd say Covington was far more overrated than Branch.
-
Is Bobby Ray not also a UNT alum? There are quite a few people on this board that rant about having too many high-up administrators that have no ties to UNT (me included!). I agree that it is RV's job to run our AD, but I'm not going to also rail against an alum like Bobby Ray who I have no doubts has only the best interests of UNT in mind. (*I'm not saying that KingDL1 was railing against Bobby Ray here in this post, but I thought this would be a good enough place to comment)

I don't know...I have a new perspective on DD. My Dad came along with me to this last game (first one he's been at since the late 90's)....he came away talking about how we "looked" more like a I-A football team now....across the board we have more size, skill and depth. He was impressed with our QBs (ok, not as much by Phillips) considering that they are both freshman....and he loved Johnny Quinn (how can you not?). He was used to seeing guys like Attaway and Bridges at QB, and had never seen Cobbs in person. Anyway, the point of all this is that an outsider who sees your kids every 2-3 years is always shocked by how much they've grown....well, the same thing happened at the football game this Saturday. It was obvious to an outsider that UNT football has done alot of growing in the last 6-7 years. This was a hard year, esp. not winning ANY home games....but we are STILL moving in the right direction. That didn't stop just b/c of this one year... I STILL Believe In The MEAN GREEN!

I've been able to find the new NT logo stuff without problems....bought a hat in the Plano mall before the season started and bought a football at my local Kroger (Allen)....seems to me that the AD is doing a better job on this....how else would an NT football be found at a Kroger???
-
I saw a few...no idea what high school it was, but there was one letterman jacket that I remember....black coat, with a Yellow 'M'.... Either way, none of the kids I saw were taller than 6' and NONE of them were over 180 lbs....but then, I didn't see the whole group.
-
You don't lose your job to injury. I, really, don't see why this is so shocking to everyone. Remember when Scott Hall first showed up on campus and got in on a few series against Baylor?...his first possession he takes the team straight down the field and puts 6 on the board. It still took DD several games to turn the reigns over to him. I don't see why this is a problem for everyone here....the season is over, why throw Meager to the bench permanently when you've devoted so much time to his development all year. I, personally, see some promise in Meager--his sideline demeanor and leadership could use a boost, but from what I've seen, he looks like the most gifted athlete we've had at QB in DD's tenure. I also, don't see how anyone can say that "DD doesn't care"....good grief, how do you know that? I think his style of game is very uninspiring to watch and requires more buy-in from the players to physically execute than many of the offenses run now in college football....for that reason, I think he'll always face an uphill battle when he's going up against a more talented team. I think his negative public comments could be taken as him not caring, but I think that he probably cares VERY much and just gets frustrated that we're not funded or supported like a BCS school. This is all conjecture, though, as I have zero idea of what goes on in his mind... Further proof that the coaching staff does care is RF's half-time incident at the last home game. Do you honestly think that a coach, who didn't care, would get emotional over a fan's comment and snap?? I don't.
-
Nope....I didn't realize I came across as negative enough, on this board, to make people think I'd start a site like that. I am definitely not in the group that is thrilled with our coaches, but a site like that is going to far....not too mention, looks like the work of a student.... ....MeanGreenEngineer = Scott Hall??
-
Yeah...I observed a few things myself (through close proximity to the coaches wives' tailgating spot at one of the home games)....they said things VERY similar to what you just said....no details given, but they didn't seem to think we would even be competitive that day...and that is not good to hear from people so close to the program. Does anybody else remember the MGR that had the comment from the "barber shop" that we really "needed" to win OOC games this year to help some of the coaches along?.....was Snyder's impending retirement already known by DD?...I thought at the time it was just talking about RF, since he has applied for HC positions every year the past few years and hasn't broken through yet. Either way, my brain is working overtime trying to make sense of it all....I have a feeling that I'm not the only one.
-
Ok...crap. Sorry....got excited there after reading that Barry Switzer applied for this job at one point.....I mean, we'd be on probation now, but sheesh!....did he pull out at the last minute? Surely there was not a BETTER candidate...I mean, I've seen our coaching tree over the last 30 years....was this BEFORE Fry?
-
But if what Moot is saying over in another thread about practices being cut short and not intense.....he may be on his way out already!
-
That's what I was afraid of....I have the same impression of him---but he seems to know more 'administration' info than the low-level detail that he's going into here. Moot, sorry to question you, but this isn't even funny. Now, if it's a sign that DD IS leaving at the end of this season, well...then I understand (not really as he's still being paid by us), but if we're supposed to be "building for next season" since this one is lost, and we're cutting practices short then I don't even know what to say.... Maybe we should come over the top of SMU's bid for Todd Dodge. Maybe RV is working on this quietly in the background??
-
WTF? Can anyone vouche for Moot?? I see him on the board alot spreading 'inside info', but this is not something to joke about! Is this for real??
-
Say what you will about Dodge's success at Southlake, but he coached at my high school, Carrollton Newman Smith, a couple of years after I graduated. We had/have an awful football tradition, but Dodge had them playing .500 ball the first year he got there....he didn't stay long b/c Southlake swooped in and bought him soon after. I think he'll have success wherever he goes. I also think that if the timing was different and we were in SMU's shoes, we'd be foolish not to give the guy a serious look. Oh...and to make next year's game vs. SMU all the more "potentially" embarrassing....we'll be facing a high school coach. Poetic Justice will have it no other way....
-
Honestly, was this unexpected? You don't lose your job to injury in "the rules"....and DD plays by those rules. Give Meager a shot, but I bet we see Phillips at least one series in the first half.
-
If ULM runs the option-read that LaLa did against us, we'll get scorched. That said, we haven't stopped any kind of run all year and I don't think we'll stop ULM either. ULM - 42 UNT - 28 I also don't understand why the all the ULM fans are confused as to why we hate them....so, here, let me make it clear: Your coach is a freakin a-hole.
