I think you mistake "team" with the word "program". Just because we had a couple of good teams like in the late 60s and mid 70s doesn't mean we had a better program in place. Just playing in Fouts alone made us a worse program. We've never had a big donor base or season ticket base. Hell, we were, maybe still are behind a school like Idaho in donor and season ticket base. We still are behind programs like Boise and ULa La. I'm not making excuses and I would much rather look forward than look behind and i'm certainly not feeling sorry for good ol NT.
-
I'm not making excuses, i'm just telling you we can't do it the "Louisville way". At least not in the short term. We don't have a nationally known/NCAA championship BBall program to help fund our athletic department. You want to follow Boise's plan, I'm all for it. But if you want to say "why can't we do this" and post that article, I can give you a bunch of reasons. Starting with, our BBall program costs us a lot of money, theirs makes them a lot of money. You guys want an overnight fix, well sorry it ain't gonna happen.
-
While an interesting article, their situation was/is nothing like ours. They were drawing 15k per BBall game. They are the only game in town in a major metropolitan area. That's a lot of money to draw from.

I'm going to a high school game but will swing by after that.

For a game that some of us having been waiting 15 years to happen, you've managed to make this just another ordinary week of NT football. Never mind that we don't like our opponent this week. Never mind that they've not wanted to play us since 1993. Never mind that college football is about passion, rivalries, and disappointments. This week is just another week. DD and Bennett are buds, god forbid anybody says anything that might be taken the wrong way. This game may not make the team's season but it sure would make a lot of the fan's season. But instead the passion is replaced by canned comments and "we gotta execute" insightful coachspeak. God forbid if we tried to sell this game as us against them. Even though that's exactly what it is. Do you guys even remember the whole "safeway parking lot" comment that a lot of us agreed with (even if Simon was looney, every blue moon he made sense)? But no, let's not say anything upsetting about our opponent. Let's not fire up the fan base or good gosh, actually fire up the team. I guess we'll just have to take for granted that your pre-game speech will be a doozy. Unlike your one to us, oh wait, there wasn't one for the fans. SMU is coming to town.....could've fooled me.

I know he only played one year (1995) of this stretch but Ron Paris or DD over Willis Hudson?
-
I will say this, anybody who believes in rating the bowls before the games are even played isn't much of a football fan. More like a fan of publicity or hype. Last years Liberty Bowl was a great game, the Orange Bowl was a dud. I'll take the game over hype any day.
-
If I had a nickel for every time we used the excuse "they shot lights out" over the past 10 years of NT basketball, I could fund us a new stadium. Heard it after the ASU game too. Sooner or later this team needs to play defense, especially perimeter defense.
-
Not really, you should've seen the crowd at UH when we played their a couple of years ago. Less than 1k easily.

FR*Telegram blurb Central Florida to get new

I find this thread very amusing, but about as surprising as the sun coming up tomorrow. Nice attempt Cerebus but it's hard to use logic against the illogical. And that's putting it nicely. -
UCF has been I-A for about 10 years now.

I guess so, somebody had the balls to say we would try to raise $90 million (that's the figure I remember) a couple of years back. Doesn't mean we have. I just think an AD at a place like SDSU coming out and saying they want be top 10 just means that's what he wants to happen. But hell, couldn't anybody SAY something like that. I'm curious to see who they hire. I've always had a soft spot for SDSU, almost went there myself. I just don't see it having a lot of the tangibles to become a top 25 program.
-
I'm just pointing out what I understand to be true, if I'm wrong you can correct me. SDSU plays at Qualcomm, a stadium that isn't theirs so they get little revenue off of it and even a good crowd there barely halfway fills it. Utah plays in a newly renovated stadium that is their own. Attendance this year was fairly even although Utah usually draws more. The last two games for Utah they drew 39 and 36k. The last two for SDSU were 26 and 20k. Their records were close too. SDSU benefitted from having UCLA come to town and playing SJSU didn't hurt either. On the same side of that argument, Utah had USU come to town. Utah is pretty much the only game in town besides the Jazz. SDSU has to deal with the Chargers. Not to mention the other thousands of things to do in San Diego. I used to live an hour away from SDSU and went to a lot of football games. It's just not a college sports town. Can that change? Sure, but it won't be easy. If it was, everybody would be doing it. I'm just over the whole rah-rah speeches.
-
I'm just saying it's hard to stay at the top for any non-BCS program. And in my opinion Utah has more going for it than SDSU. How about they get into the top 50 before they start talking about top 10.
-
Check back in 5 years and see if they are anywhere near top 10. Make that top 25. They fired a coach and made some statements. Hell, 4 or 5 years ago UNT made a bunch of big statements. For every AD that does something grand there are 10 saying they are going to do something grand. By the way, anybody see how Utah did this year?
-
It would be big but the momentum would be totally lost if we don't take care of business in conference. We beat Tech one year we went 2-9 and it didn't do much for attendance at the end of the year. NMSU destroyed Arizona State one year but didn't take care of business in conference. See how attendance was at the last two games of the year the year we beat Tech and hung tough with A$M. We had about 3000 for the last game of that year . I think Texas is a bad example anyway. Because sorry folks, that just ain't happening next year.
-
All I know is that if I gave a million dollars to UNT I'd have some strings attached as well. You think I'm just throwing that kind of money at this Athletic Department without some concrete assurances you are crazy. It's JM's money, if UNT didn't like the terms they could have turned it down.

I am thinking about going. Lots of -ings, I know. I love me some Lafayette.

Is it aginst the rules to let another team score?
meanrob replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Boise State did it against us back in 99 I believe. We had a one point lead and instead of taking a knee Dickey ran the ball and Boise let us score with about a minute to go. Then they went right down the field but fumbled around our 20. -
If it isn't bad, it's pretty darn close to being bad. MTSU- 7pts Troy- 10 pts FIU- 13 pts FAU- 16 pts ULM- 19 pts That's 5 Sun Belt games in which the offense didn't score 20 points. If that isn't bad, I'd like to know what it is.

I only respond at all because you have called out those who were supposedly "negative" in the past and now I find it amusing that you are now posting things to what you in the past ridiculed. Dark cloud? Maybe. But I don't go around kidding myself or others that this program will reach better heights just because so-so said this or I heard this from some un-named person. Or certainly not because one man did it for a couple of years than moved on thirty years ago. Hell, using that logic UTEP should win another BBall national championship any day now. "BTW, all of that that you criticized "meanrob style" was a theoretical scenario so I guess you might say that there really is no source or person at all." Not sure what that means, you are the one who said a TV commentator said UNT was top 25 program in the making. But I do believe the second half of that statement. By the way, being ranked doesn't mean you are a top 25 program. If that were the case Fry never would have left. It means that for that week a bunch of writers or coaches think you are that number team for the week. Last week UTEP was ranked, Tennessee was not. Are you telling me that UTEP is a better program than UT? You sell hope without substance, hate to tell you but eventually somebody has to provide the substance. Cerebus is the high judge. I am merely a jester in the court of public opinion. And only a part-time jester at that.
-
As usual no facts in your posts, just a bunch of "I heard this from....(insert _____ because no one is ever quoted directly) Anybody, and I mean ANYBODY who thinks this is a top 25 program waiting to happen is either stupid or very ignorant. Or blowing smoke, take your pick. We're not even a top 75 program at this point and not anywhere near top 50. Not at the infrastructure level, the attendance level, fundraising level, or any level other than our location. And I would say we have even failed at taking advantage of that. Please don't give me this crap about FSU or Miami or a couple of other schools that once were doormats but grew into powers. That was a very different time. In the speed of light you went from complaining about the negativity to jumping right on board, yet nowhere do I see you acknowledging that those who weren't "it's all green and all good" may have been right in the first place. Is that possible? I'd say, if you think DD is the only problem, you are indeed setting your goals too low. rob

I've seen the tape of that game. That crazy interception returned for a score totally changed the momentum. But it still wasn't as good as the 30-27 game.
-
So two of our OOC wins are basically over Sun Belt teams. That's even sadder. The other ones with "Rob" comments- Northern Illinois- They went 1-10 that year and lost to Western Illinois in the process. Their only win.....over Ark State. We won that game by three and got extremely lucky when NIU fumbled near our goal line and we ran the ball all the way back for a score. Texas Tech (2X)- not much to say, two of the greatest victories I've ever witnessed but the 30-27 game was about as good as it gets. Probably one of the best games of any kind that I've seen. 4th and 14?? Unbelievable. Baylor- Great game at Fouts but to be honest I expected us to blow them out. They were horrible and it showed. Oregon State- What a scrappy game by basically a I-AA team that we fielded. We were down in the fourth but fought back and won in the last seconds. Cincy- Great game, would've been nice if somebody from Cincy would have been there.
-
WHAT?!? We've only won 8 I-A OOC games since returning to I-A? Good grief....see if I can name them. Oregon State Texas Tech (2X) Northern Illinois ULL (worst frickin game ever) Baylor Cincy? I'm at a loss for the last one if the Cincy game was included.
