meanrob replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
For all the times I've bashed Brett and the DRC I applaud this. An editorial has been long overdue but they did it right.- 94 replies

I can name schools off the top of my head that win and don't draw 25k. WKU, NIU, Toledo, Utah State, Ark State, Ohio, Bowling Green, and Rice. Probably more. The year NIU went undefeated and went to the Orange Bowl they averaged a whopping 15,670. In 1999 Boise State went 10-3 and averaged 22,979. In 2013 we averaged 21,030. Not that big a difference. Difference is they progressed, we regressed. There's no correlation between student body size and winning. If so, why are TCU and Baylor in the top five? And both of those teams brought in quality coaches before filling the stadium. Floyd Casey was a ghost town before Briles arrived. TCU was a joke pre-Franchione. The magical year they went to the Sun Bowl and beat USC they averaged 27,181. And that includes a home game with Oklahoma. The ball has to start with a good coach. Period.

There's only two ways to look at this- 1) Canales was the OC for the past five years and during that time our offense has been rated in the bottom third offensively four of those five years. 2) He wasn't the OC and he's been standing around holding a clipboard for the last five years. Either way nothing he has done the past five years qualifies him to be a head coach. Those are the facts. -

Just like 2010.....here come the agendas! -
Everybody else can reserve their judgement. I've seen the same thing for years. Obviously I don't make the decision but there's no way I hire the guy. I wouldn't keep him as my OC much less my head coach. This is back-up quarterback syndrome to the nth degree. It's one man's opinion but this is the most absurd discussion on this board. It's so short-sighted it's almost unbelievable.
-
I remember the Monroe game. Defense was horrible. We gave up 40+ in three of the five after not giving up forty all year.
-
If it weren't for this board, Vito's entire back catalog would fit on a bar napkin.

That list is deceiving. If you go by total points, we have more than others because we gave out more scholarships. If you go by average, we're 9th or 10th. -
He doesn't need that to have an opinion. And saying something as ludicrous as UNT will always be in debt to Mac for what he did for the program is about as ludicrous as it gets. Are we so in our bubble that we don't know how reporters are supposed to cover a team? He called the loss to PSU "possibly one of the worst losses in UNT history". Possibly??? He can't even have a declarative opinion on that.

I'm saying you put feelers out right now and have a decision made by the end of the season on a new coach. You don't make a list, put out the feelers and say "Well, we're waiting to see how our interim does." He's been here how many years and we're need another seven games to decide? His body of work here speaks for itself. -
I don't mind if anybody likes the guy or roots for him. But as the OC/Quarterbacks coach to me the results have been dismal. And I'm way behind the whole "nice guy, I like him" phase. I expect the team to come out Thursday fired up, playing loose, and putting up a fight. Then Doughty lights us up like a Christmas tree.

DRC Monday column: UNT can learn from good, bad of McCarney era
meanrob replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I've been to Middle, WKU, Ark State, USU, ULL, Troy, and a few other comparable programs. Some for games, other times just being in those towns. Perception seemed pretty similar to me. A cute little program in SEC/Big 12/PAC 12 territory. None of those programs are the most supported school in their area. None of those have a long history of being successful at football. Most of the games I attended there were less than 10k in attendance. All of the stadiums are worse than Apogee. Most of the towns are worse than Denton. And worst of all, we have been better than all of those programs at some point. They didn't cry woe is me. They didn't dwell on the past. They made a good hire. Or maybe they did, then went out and made a good hire. :) -

Tougher to recruit to than Ark State, Georgia Southern, WKU, ULL, Utah State, UTSA, MTSU, and a few others? Those juggernauts? Because those programs would kick our ass right now. And you'll never convince me it's harder to recruit here than those places. We have way too many walkons and too many guys who only we offered. I think we are so used to having sand kicked in our face we don't believe it could be better. I truly believe Mac thought his personality would change everything and when he hit the wall he threw in the towel. Well, there's somebody out there hungry and smart enough to smash through that wall. We gotta find him. Tired of little ol' UNT being blamed for everything. The pieces are here. -

Will never happen. RV and Mac aren't the only ones stealing money. -

No breaking news, but it's being thrown around in other posts and it boggles my mind. -
Because the idea of our crappy AD hiring our crappy OC as the next head coach is sending me over the edge. -1 all you want. I'll be under the covers in the fetal position.

Compare what they had to work with and compare how they left the program.....absolutely. -
MGB: Sounds like Smith is going to get his shot
meanrob replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Great post except we differ on the quality of this team. I think it's 3-9 at best. No QB (at least no proven QB), bad secondary, and many other problems. How much of it was coaching? I don't know but stacked up against previous UNT teams, this roster doesn't fare well. I'm hoping we play with a lot of heart the rest of the season but from what I've seen we don't have near talent to be 6-6. Not it this year's CUSA. -

Worst loss ever, overall losing record, complaining how hard it is here, complaining the fans didn't show up, stubborn to the point of being a detriment to the program, and lackadaisical recruiting. And I'm a guy who was FULLY on board with his hire. I said he should be given seven years to build the program. It had to be a disaster for me to change my mind and it was worse than a disaster. He did nothing to change the culture. He improved academics (golf clap). Worse than Dodge. Let that sink in. -

"UNT needs someone who can continue the work McCarney did to change the perception of the program as the last resort in Texas college football." Mac did jack squat to change the perception. If anything he contributed mightily to it, in both his actions and words. -

Check the stats of Freeze's offenses against ours. Not even close. Freeze had been a HC previously as well. And if you want to speculate Canales wasn't the true OC go ahead, but that is pure speculation. I'm telling you if I'm in charge I'm not wasting my time waiting on the incredibly ridiculous idea that he goes 7-0 and I'm out there looking for our next coach. -

There should be no confusion in this process Silver. The message should be "We're bringing in a new coach and we're letting him pick his coaches." No Lock the Gate and no public remarks about wanting the job. You thank Canales for his service and he has plenty of time to find another gig. I can't speak for others but I've seen enough from him over the past however many years to know that I want the offense going in another direction. This isn't the time for sentimentality. And if for some reason he can't abide by that and be professional, you send him packing early and it's next coach up. RV should have met with both the coaches and players and explained to both that yes this is a crappy situation but you have to man up and finish out the season the best you can. There's still seven games left for crying out loud. If anything, play hard for the guy next to you. -
What exactly happened yesterday? It wasn't talent disparity. No way you could convince me of that. It wasn't purely coaching. Harry and I could have been co-head coaches yesterday and we don't lose 66-7. If we had a real beat writer we might get answers but I want to know what the hell happened yesterday. That was the worse loss for a college football team in at least 30 years. I'm glad Dan is gone but there's more there.
