  1. Quick disclaimer here- this opinion/thought has no bearing on what kind of a fundraiser, hirer of coaches, or what kind of manager/overseer of the department WB will be. But I think in this area he needs to show he can think outside the box. Wren and Co. have got to create positive waves for the program. Currently we have a head football coach who doesn't have the type of personality to be the public face of UNT sports (and that's fine), a basketball coach who should be calling moving companies, and a woman's coach who has a great personality but currently isn't winning enough to make waves. And since all three sports are struggling, we can't just wait around until they do win to bring attention to North Texas. The department has to do something. Tweeting and announcing home and home contracts isn't going to cut it. Pictures of upgraded locker rooms isn't going to get it done. Doing it when you're winning is easy. Doing it at a place like UNT when the teams are down is hard. But it has to be done and it needs to start soon. Call it whatever you want- energizing the base or just getting people talking about North Texas, but it's not happening right now. How? You got me, that's why they're paying him the big bucks. But right now we can't afford to take a passive approach.
  2. That's the one big difference between you and me. I believe it's only minimally related to caring. I think most in the administration just didn't know any better or were smoke screened by RV's bs. Maybe that's just a matter of semantics but I think our poor performance is more due to lousy hiring than caring or money. If we were constantly going .500 and refused to make the investment to get better, then I'd say we didn't care. But we've been so bad it's been more about lousy leadership/management than apathy.
  3. Yeah but the highs are pretty frickin high. A bit of an overstatement but the win at Tech in 98 might be worth most of this.
  4. This isn't a criticism just a statement- could've used your (and others) outrage about 2004. Started going sideways about then. Do I think DD went off the reservation at the end? Yep. I also know his assistants were woefully paid and the good, young ones jumped shipped as soon as another offer came. I can't defend a lot of what DD did at the end but I said it then and still believe it. If you would have given me a choice, I would have sent RV packing over DD. Not even close.
  5. Maybe you, but not me.
  6. Somebody want to explain to me why ODU is below Charlotte? Makes no sense.
  7. The interesting thing about the Trilli era was for a hot second it all came together and the team started playing good ball. Then it fell apart and everybody transferred. I remember watching Erskin (?) suited up for UT and giving all out effort. What a downer.
  8. He was busy imploding the WAC. Both LBSU and UCI have fielded some good teams but no one seems to keep the mojo going. I'm still surprised the Gauchos can't get it going.
  9. I used to play pickup ball at UCI while stationed at El Toro so I was very familiar with the Anteaters. But the crowds and atmosphere when the Cali teams came to town wasn't the greatest. Then again, you could say nothing has changed.
  10. Had season tickets during the Trilli years and most games you just stopped paying attention early in the second half. Jankovich years weren't anything to write home about either. This is so bad because we have more going for us now. Or at least we should. You think it's hard to get up for opponents now, the early Big West days sucked. Who gives a hoot about Irvine or Fullerton. But some of my favorite players are from those years.
  11. Without reading the article I would have given him a B-. How can you give him an A when the new UTSA coach smoked us? On another note, how could anybody hire Muschamp as their head coach? He'll be fired in three years.
  12. Agree. That was a good, informative listen. Then again, back then they had something to talk about.
  13. Every time I begin to think that we have a disastrous performance.
  14. IF the new coach can keep most of the roster intact he's got more to work with than when Littrell took over a one-win dumpster fire of a team.
  15. Absurd. I'm in the fire Benford immediately camp but if WB hires a good coach, this thing can be turned around quickly. Whatever damage has be done (and I'm in agreement it has be significant) won't get much worse if TB is fired at the end of the year. You can't recruit or win fans back without knowing who the new coach is. Only the die hards are paying any attention at this point. I'm just disgusted he continues to represent the program. I say fire him yesterday but regardless, the right hire can fix this.
  16. The ONLY subject I'll ever agree with TFLF on.
  17. I'd say there's nine either/or games on that schedule.
  18. I have some things to say after signing day.
  19. And UT has a cow with BEVO written on it standing on the sidelines. Means absolutely nothing but throw a backstory on it and it becomes a source of pride. I'm just saying whatever works, works. Logical and cool shouldn't be the standard.
  20. I hear Arkansas fans calling pigs. Washington fans barking. I hear everybody complaining about us having no traditions. But I guess anything new has to be cool and not embarrassing. Meanwhile just about every great tradition is uncool and super embarrassing. So make up y'alls mind. Devalue the brand? Not sure in the sports world our brand has any value. Like I said, try everything, see what sticks.
  21. I'd make a list of all the dumb rituals in sports but i don't have a month it would take to compile the complete list. Starting with grown adults wearing cheese on their heads. It's a billboard with a mildly funny pun on it. I'll take it over some corporate slogan we paid some consultant 25k to come up with.
  22. People make fun of us because we're bad. I'd hope after fifteen years of crap marketing we throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Doesn't caawws me any problems.
  23. I have my doubts. Most coaches fired from big programs don't rebound quickly, if at all. Solich being the lone example coming to mind. If you can't beat Kansas and Iowa State with every advantage.....my guess is he's .500 at USF as well.
  24. Well, they're all his players so either way it's on the coach. What's absurd is the number of games we have lost to teams with inferior talent, starting with UAH.
  25. I'm not sure it's ever productive to criticize fans for the level of support they choose to provide. Granted, some of those fans don't help themselves with their reasoning but still, that "2 percent" isn't going to make or break us. We're paying someone a lot of money to build and engage a new fan base. Here's hoping he's better than the last guy.
