  1. If Fran was the choice I would be satisfied but I wouldn't be thrilled. I would be worried about his age and I would be worried about his style of offense. Like others have said I don't know if he would have the ability to stick around long enough to turn this around considering his age. Rebuilding is a tough job and he's already done it twice but at a much younger age. That being said, I would be satisfied with the hire and hopeful everything works out well for UNT. He does bring a lot of pluses.
  2. The link I'm using doesn't have any assistant coach information for private schools. In CUSA they don't have the head coach salary for Tulane. June Jones' salary is there but there's two other CUSA head coaches making more money: Skip Holtz and George O'Leary. June Jones isn't alone in raising the average. There's a couple of coaches in the $300,000 range, a couple in the $400,000's ... and then it goes up.
  3. Ok ... so my numbers that I posted above are probably very unrealistic and way off what we have to work with. Using the link from Mean Green 93-98 I've averaged the salaries for head coaches and all football assistants for five conferences: MWC, CUSA, WAC, MAC, and Sun Belt. If we could have a $2.1 million budget we would be above the average MWC salaries as of 2009. (note: the numbers below are from 2009 and schools have nine assistants instead of the eleven I used above). ....................HC......ASSISTANTS..........TOTAL MWC.........$869,000...$1,160,000.....$2,029,000 CUSA........$801,000.....$935,000.....$1,736,000 WAC.........$605,000.....$863,000.....$1,468,000 MAC.........$342,000.....$709,000.....$1,051,000 Sun Belt ...$281,000.....$665,000.......$946,000 UNT ('09) ..$279,000.....$650,000......$929,000 I think a much more hopeful goal is to shoot for the WAC numbers. That would give us a head coach at $600,000 ... two coordinators at $200,000, and seven assistants at $66,000 per year. However, if CUSA is where we would like to be then I would love to be able to hit that salary level now.
  4. That's a great link. So my numbers would involve a significant raise for all the coaches. Edit: In fact, using the numbers from that link we wold need only $967,000 to match the salaries of the assistants (not counting the St & Cond coach or the Director of OP). So, basically, we need an extra $1 million to reach the levels I have in my previous post.
  5. The Coaches page for football on meangreensports.com lists 11 coaches including the strength coach and Director of Operations. I made a spreadsheet with $600k for HC, $200k for coordinators, and $125k for all other assistants. It comes to a total of $2,125,000. To put that into persective, according to USA Today (see link at bottom) in 2008-2009, the latest data available, UNT paid ALL their coaches a total of $3,255,410. I would hope that we would be able to at least have a pay scale as I've listed. However, I also realize that there are other costs involved (retirement, healthcare, etc) that may or may not have to come out of the athletic budget. Also, any payments made to Dodge probably will come out of this budget. But if you look at only salary for current coaches we would need about $2.1 million to have this type of pay scale. 1 Head Coach: $600,000 2 Offensive Coordinator: $200,000 3 Offensive Line: $125,000 4 Running Backs: $125,000 5 Wide Receivers: $125,000 6 Defensive Coordinator: $200,000 7 Defensive Line: $125,000 8 Defensive Ends: $125,000 9 Cornerbacks: $125,000 10 Safeties: $125,000 11 Director of Operations: $125,000 12 Director of St & Cond.: $125,000 Grand Total: $2,125,000 HC Total: $600,000 Off Total: $575,000 Def Total: $700,000 USA Today link: USA Today http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ncaa-finances.htm?loc=interstitialskip
  6. I thought Canalas was making around $200,000 this year.
  7. Thanks for the info. The moral of the story ... don't pay someone $35k for advice and then not listen to them.
  8. If/when Howard is gone I hope they do get a high profile coach. It can only help make the conference better and make us better with it.
  9. However, he may be a good choice for the strength coach at UNT if that position opens.
  10. Stoops is a defensive guy and brought in a high powered offense to go with it.
  11. I figure our TE's are all injuried ... seems logical considering the season we're going through.
  12. The way this season has gone I can't say that I'm surprised. I feel bad for Riley having another injury. He's a gamer but his body keeps letting him down.
  13. Happy Birthday, Rick! We're thankful to have you as our AD.
  14. I'd love to have Leavitt but I'd have to do some in depth research into his "situation" because you can't have that bit us in the butt a year or so down the line. Coach Canalas should be able to provide some great insight into him. You're also right that it's too early to start worrying over names. We'll have plenty of choices if the time comes. I just hope we'll be able to offer higher salaries for a head coach and the assistants ... whether it's the current staff or a new staff.
  15. AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. MORE importantly ... how come there are no helmet stickers on our helmet.
  17. There's a high rate of injury for gymnastics, I believe. I bet cost for insurance is high. The biggest savings might be the coaching salary and travel costs.
  18. It's Thursday! Where's the report???
  19. I wouldn't say so much we're unique as other schools have/need to be rebuilt. However, I agree that experience rebuilding would be a big plus when looking for a head coach.
  20. He was the head coach at Austin College (in Sherman) in the late 80's. He recruited me to play there. He seemed like a really nice guy and seemed to know his stuff. However, I wouldn't want him to be our HC.
  21. To me this season is only a win-win opportunity. Either the team does well and we're hopefully turning the corner ... or we're hiring a new coach. Looks like we'll be hiring the new coach. Dickey was able to save his job by going on a late run but I don't see Dodge being able to pull off the same feat.
  22. The thing about bringing a high profile coach is not only do you have to pay his salary but you also have to pay the assistants he will want to bring in. That will be a big issue if we need to hire a new head coach this off season.
  23. Very cool. Next time they need Scott Hall to join them.
