  1. Florida does finish their regular season this week ... but then most teams finish up this week.
  2. We could rename the conference "The mathematically accurate Big 12".
  3. stebo - I really hope we have more than $1 million to pay the coaching staff. We desperately need to if we want to be serious about competing.
  4. I was about to post the same thing. I love Riley but we need someone who can get the ball down the field more consistently.
  5. Basing the HC job on a close win or close loss isn't smart. I don't think the actual win/lose of this game will matter.
  6. And I have to say this broadcast is 1,000 times better than last week.
  7. It's on channelsurfing.net now. ULM feed.
  8. The article is right in stating that his fees are very resonable. Headhunters for corporate positions would charge a much, much hire percentage of the salary. Compared to that Neimas is a steal.
  9. They can have all black uniforms.
  10. If we hire a former head coach then (Fran, Leach, Levitt, etc) then it would be justified no matter what Canales does from here on out. However, if we're looking at coordinators then Canales is making it hard to not hire him.
  11. I would like to see that as well but you can find his post game interview from that game. I saw something else Canales is doing to help him get the job. He's drinking Diet Coke.
  12. Good, good stuff.
  13. Check out the play by play of that opening drive of the third quarter. The MUTS offense basically had two half times.
  14. Still 20-17 UNT but now UNT has the ball in MUTS territory.
  15. I'm watching on ESPN 360. The feed is solid but the camera work is just awful. From the banner below the score it's being done by the MUTS students ... and it looks like it. Not only does the camera fall for every fake but they keep cutting to field level cameras during the play. Just an awful production.
  16. I like the idea of a defensive head coach. A good defense will keep you in games. Combine that with an explosive offense and you've got something. I'm sure many on this board will be upset because he's not Canales and he's not a "big name" former head coach. The only thing he has going over Canales is that he's a defensive coach, he's got the Stoops last name, and he isn't currently a UNT coach.
  17. That's what many of us have been saying. It doesn't matter if it's "big name coach" or Canales or a coach from another team. The most important thing is to find the right fit - the right guy. Winning will bring a much bigger bang for the buck over the long term than "big name coach" with struggling teams. Now if we can get both "big name coach" and winning ... then that's the jackpot and we'll take it.
  18. I think this proves Canales isn't ready to be head coach of a big time school. A "big name coach" would know he could charge money and suppliment his income with information like this. Why can't we get a head coach who knows how to dish out information for a profit? /end sarcasm
  19. Two thoughts for Plumm ... 1. I don't count Canales as from a "perennially losing football". He's been the offensive coordinator for a lot of very good teams and he's only been here for half a season. The "stank" of losing hasn't attached itself to him yet. 2. You can hire "big name coach" and sell more tickets for a year or two. However, if he doesn't work out ... and there's no guarentee "big name coach" will work out ... then we're right back in the same spot in a year or two. In fact, if "big name coach" does fail then we're probably in a worse spot than we are now. There's a lot of great reasons for hiring "big name coach" but selling tickets is way down on the list. We would be MUCH better off five years from now with "no name coach" developing a winning team who can win OOC than by hiring "big name coach" who flounders for five years. I still think Canales is a long shot at this time. He's gonna have to get this team on a roll ... have the money boosters get behind him ... and have the "big name coach" decide he's not interested or demand too much. However, there are other "no name" coordinators out there we should consider. You can't just place all your hopes on Leach, Levitt, or Franchione coming because they may not be an option for us.
  20. That makes me want to laugh and cry.
  21. 1. No. However, it would help him to get as many wins as possible. 2. n/a 3. A handful of wins is a really small sample size to base a decision like this on. 4. I think this will be a better determining factor in whether Canales should be a candidate. Can he inspire the team over the final games? Can he get the team to improve each week (whether that results in wins or not)? Can he get the coaches working together in spite of the fact they all have to be worried about their jobs? Can he handle all the responsibilites that is required of a head coach at this level on a day to day basis? After a few weeks he seems to be hitting all these points as best we can tell from the outside. However, it's much harder to keep it going week after week especially once some road blocks come along. How will Canales and the team respond if they play well but get blasted by Troy? How Canales handles this will say a lot more about his potiential candidacy than the win over WKU. 5. Canales has been here for half a season so all we have to go on is his performance in his previous stops. The only thing I've heard is that he is a good recruiter. After watching his WKU post game locker room speech and his post game press conference I think he would be a great recruiter. I think he has a personality kids would be attracted to and love playing for. 6. I believe who ever the new coach is should be able to hire their own staff. 7. I think he should be a legitimate candidate. If we're looking at current coordinators of other schools then Canales is in that mix. He's only been here for six months so I would not hold that against him. However, there's a lot of responsibilites required of a head coach that we don't see from the outside. RV would have a much more insightful opinion and if RV doesn't think Canales can cut it at this level then he shouldn't be a legitimate candidate. The other issue is that RV doesn't have sole input into this decision. If others (influential boosters, President, etc) all think UNT must have a big name hire then Canales is already out so this entire discussion is moot. 8. If things keep going up for the team and Canales is hired then I would be very hopeful that things will turn around quickly as much as I would with any other hire. The problem is it doesn't matter who you hire - big name coach, big school coordinator, etc - the potiential for failure is there. If Canales can end this season on a high note he'l have one thing no one else does ... a positive experience as our head coach. That could be worth a lot when it comes to decision making time.
  22. I just watched Canales' post game conference. Impressive guy. As guys have stated previously a big name hire doesn't guarentee anything. Previous head coaching experience doesn't guarentee anything. Finding the right guy ... getting the right fit ... that's the key. Canales has been with a lot big programs and he's worked with a lot of big name guys. He right when he says it's time for him to be a head coach (whether that's here or somewhere else). The big money boosters are going to have a say in this and this could be to Canales' benefit. If the team improves over the last of the season Canales could impress the right people and impress the right people with his personality. If the other "big name" coaches come up with warts or demands more than what we are willing to stomach then at the end of the day Canales may be the best choice. All that being said I don't know if Canales is the best guy for the job. I know he has a very nice coaching background and he seems like he would be a good head coach. However, I'm not around the guy every day. I don't know how his personality and style would play out leading a team over a full year. At the end of the day I'll just trust Rick to make the right recommendation.
