  1. So why don't you go ahead and call UNT fans delusional? How long has it been since UNT has averaged 20k in attendance? So why do they need a 30k seat stadium? The reason: You plan for where you're hoping to go, not where you've been. I'm hoping UNT makes it to where they not only need the 30k seats, but that it also has to expand past that. Based on their history it's going to be tough for them. But I'm not going to call them delusional for building a 30k seat stadium because they're building for the future. Does UH need a 60k stadium this year? No. Will we need it in the next 5 years? Doubtful. But we didn't really need a 30k seat stadium 5 years ago. This season UH probably needs about a 40k seat stadium based on last year's attendance and a linear regression of attendance over the last decade. Instead we'll just sell out all of our games this year which increases season ticket demand in the future which increases overall attendance. So we hope to build 40k soon based on recent goals and projected growth. But you prepare to need 50+k if the growth continues Not that you care about the answer, you're only trying to point out UH negatives, but I'll answer your question for real UNT fans in case they're curious: Regarding UH's stadium funding situation, we're at $51 million of the $120mm without naming rights and without going to the general UH population, still sticking to just the big dollar donors. We need approximately $29mm more to start building. Initial estimates in the independent feasibility study had naming rights estimated at $30mm. That may be high, but I guess it depends on the length of the contract. UCF got $15mm for 15 years in 2006 from Bright House Networks. Supposedly there are 3 bidders currently for UH naming rights. We'll see how that goes. Regarding your question about Coogfans laughing at UNT's stadium? No one has done that. We wish we had a new stadium too. Luckily, UH's needs right now and for the future are larger than what UNT currently needs. We already have a stadium that holds more than 30k (although UNT's is newer and nicer) so we don't need a 30k stadium. We need a larger stadium at a higher cost. If we wanted to build a $78mm stadium, we have enough funding in place to start construction. But we're building a $120mm stadium. It's going to take us some more time. But we will get there, just like UNT got the stadium they needed. I'm sure there are plenty of UNT fans who weren't sure that the day would come when they'd get a new stadium. Congrats to them. I for one am going to enjoy that stadium the 1st game of the season and hopefully more. I may even make the Mean Green Stadium movie night. It sounds like a fun event. And like many UNT fans, I'd love for UH and UNT to start scheduling a home and home series. I think it would be a win-win for both schools. Close enough that fans can travel. Don't have to take 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 series with AQ schools. Screw them. If they won't do a home and home (or even 2 for 1s when you beat them), let them have FCS schools. 2. Because he's not a UNT fan even though he attends the school. He won't even watch UNT on TV. The only reason he's going is hoping that UH loses.
  3. Post 1 and it's to put down UH. That is this poster's MO. Everywhere he posts, his primary goal is to denigrate UH although he'll call it pointing out the facts. He claims to go to UNT and has a degree from an unnamed Big XII school which for some reason he refuses to divulge. Maybe true... Even though he may attend UNT, he's not a UNT fan. From ncaabbs thread http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=493873&pid=6453836#pid6453836: "Here in DFW, I will only watch TCU if they are playing a big name school. I have no disrespect for TCU but unless they are playing someone big, I don't care to watch. Same thing with SMU and UNT" That's right, he doesn't go to UNT games and won't even watch them on TV. Says he'll be at the opener though. Must be playing someone big. I may have attended more UNT games than jml since I went to 1 last year. I went to the UNT spring game. I also watched a couple of UNT games on TV last year, so I'm a bigger UNT fan than he is even though I didn't go to school there. I'll bet you don't see him post anything about UNT on this board unless it's how UNT has funded a stadium and UH hasn't. He may post plenty of negative UH rants though. He's 1 for 1 so far. BTW: He doesn't use the name jml2010 on Coogfans, but he won't reveal the name he uses. He must have a log in though because otherwise you can't read posts on that site.
  4. I plan on being at the UH game and hopefully a couple of other UNT games. I made it to the UNT spring game so I might as well go to some more real games.
  5. Try aTm or UT boards, especially as a Coog fan. You'd be surprised at the reception you get just for posting almost anything
  6. I see I've found one of the exceptions to the group of polite UNT posters.
  7. UT wasn't very good that year, but it always feels good to beat them. UH beating UT in 1988 was my favorite road trip as a student. In what has become known as the Parents' Day Massacre, UH won 66-15. At the time, that was UT's worst loss since 1904 (still their 4th worst loss) and it is still the worst home loss in UT history. In Andre Ware's first start, on top of 66 points, UH had 619 total yards and 412 passing yards. Jason Phillips had 11 catches for 171 yards and 4 TDs. Chuck Weatherspoon had 218 yards rushing and 1 TD on only 11 carries. I really miss those days. BTW: UH fans can relate to getting screwed by refs against UT, most notably in the 20-20 tie in 1968 on the night UT unveiled the Wishbone. With 3 minutes to go, Paul Gipson dove into the end zone on 4th and inches, but somehow the refs say he didn't gain any ground. Damn refs. UT goes 9-1-1 and a #3 ranking with a Cotton Bowl win. UH goes 6-2-2 and #18 with no bowl.
  8. I think you'll find most Coog fans to be friendly and reasonable, especially if you're friendly and reasonable. If you're a jerk, especially on an opponent's site, you can expect the same to be returned. There will be exceptions as there are with every fan base, but if you show respect with Coog fans, you'll get it from most in return.
  9. Few football related things piss me off more than people who bandwagon and abandon their own school. I've known several people from UNT who cheer for UT and have no idea what's going on at their school. I obviously don't have an issue with cheering for a second team, especially if there's a reason (geographic, parent's alma mater, etc), but if you follow football at all, you should follow and support your alma mater first.
  10. I think Dunbar is a stud too. I don't know if program really affects this case. UNT RBs have had a better history lately in the NFL. I'm guessing measurables and "potential" are the bigger difference. Using a similar coomparison with QBs. I don't think Keenum is the 9th best QB coming out of college this year. And to show a little lack of balance, I don't think Kellen Moorie is the 10th best QB coming out. I think Moore is awesome. But the 6'1" and 6'0" heights alone drop them. Dunbar may be the best college RB, but the scouts may not think he can make it big at the next level.
  11. Wow! You had at least 3 guys fighting overseas? I have my doubts. Not going through the whole roster, I saw multiple players born in 1988. The guy is frickin' 23 years old. He was 22 when he graduated. What age were you when you graduated? He got 1 extra year because he was injured multiple years. He's not the first guy to do it. He won't be the last. Get over it. It wouldn't really matter if Case played. David Piland or even Cotton Turner could put up 400 yards passing on UNT's defense unless they decide to let the RBs run crazy. Piland as a true freshman averaged 330 YPG last year with 2 games of over 400 yards. If he'd played enough games, that YPG average would have been good enough for 3rd in the nation.
  12. Assuming this is a legitimate question and not another shot about his age, he graduated in December making the CUSA Commissioner's Honor Roll, meaning his GPA was >3.0 but <3.75 (if above 3.75, he would have received the Commissioner's Academic Medal). He enrolled in grad school in the spring. BTW: For all those making fun of his age, there are several players on UNT's roster that were born in the same year as Keenum, ranging from 3 to 8 months younger. Are they middle aged too?
  13. I'll help with you childish shocker humor... No he's not celebrating his 30th birthday (he turned 23 in February), but he is getting married in a couple of weeks. Of course if you watch this video about his upcoming wedding, you may feel even more childish about the shocker humor.
  14. UH RB Bryce Beall ranked #13 on the list. A little surprising because many don't consider him the best RB on the team, but he's a very solid workhorse, every down type back.
  15. I've seen great debate on the origins of the Cougar Paw hand sign. Some people say that the fingers form a "U" and an "H". Personally I think that's lame and a stretch to see, but it may be true. It seems odd to call it the Cougar Paw though if it is supposed to be a UH. The other two origins are related to UT. The official story is related to an injury to one of our early live cougar Shasta mascots. From the UH website: "In Texas, all of the major universities have adopted a hand sign which signifies to all other Texans where your loyalties lie. The Cougar Hand Sign is no different. Although the original hand sign was the "V" for Victory until 1965, events conspired and a new hand sign was adopted. The inaugural football game between University of Houston and University of Texas during the 1953 campaign witnessed the birth of a blood rivalry between the state's two largest universities at that time. However, it also led to the adoption of another Cougar Hand Sign. During her transport from Houston to Austin, one of the fingers on Shasta's paw was severed when the cage door was closed. As the University of Texas partisans and players caught wind of the accident, they mimicked the animal by bending their thumb over the ring finger against their palm. This gesture implied that the Cougars were invalids. The Cougars would go on to lose the game 28-7. The cougar faithful, still mindful of the stinging defeat suffered 15 years earlier, never forgot the taunting that they received. The next time the two teams faced off (1968... a whole 15 years later), UH tied UT 20-20. At that point, the students thought there might be a bit of magic in that sign, and the hand sign was adopted replacing the "V". In 1976, the Cougars first football season in the Southwest Conference, the Coogs & Horns met for the third time ever. The Coogs put a beating on the Longhorns that they have yet to forget 30-0 (a.k.a.the "Dad's Day Massacre") in front of the largest crowd to assemble in Memorial Stadium at that time. That victory ended the Longhorns famed winning streak, and the embarrassment also signaled the end of legendary UT Coach Darryl K. Royal's career. After that victory, the Cougar Hand Sign became firmly entrenched. " That's a great story, but we have a lot of old timers that dispute the timeline and history of that explanation. The final theory is that it is the Hook 'em Horns sign with the middle finger added. Kind of flipping the bird at UT. That's a funny theory although when I was in school, I saw plenty of UH fans flash the horns then flip that middle finger up. Doubtful if that's the real origin though. Here's Case Keenum flashing the paw. Here's UH AD Mack Rhoades and UH President Renu Khator throwing up the paw
  16. That's for the feedback everyone. Once I get my game back, I'll be playing.
  17. Anyone on the board throw darts in Denton? I used to play in a Dallas league several years ago and I'm working on getting my game back. It looks like Denton has a few leagues and several weekly tournaments. Just looking to see if anyone has any comments on the Denton darts scene.
  18. Harry, on , said: Good to hear from you and look forward to the game as well. How do you expect your Coogs to look this year? I'll be honest, getting your QB back scares the hell out of me. He was really really good! This will be a tall order for us but I can tell you the emotion going on for us that day will be unlike any other I've ever seen in following this program for awhile!! Should be an amazing backdrop!! GMG! The offense will put up crazy numbers again as usual. Looking forward to getting Keenum back. He hasn't played as all world since that horrendous bowl game in 2009 where he threw all the interceptions, but at a minimum he'll be solid. Hopefully he'll be great again. I think he's been trying to do too much which leads to bad passes. Hopefully he'll trust his teammates more to make the plays and play within himself. If he does that he'll be amazing. We're worried about his knee. One of his biggest strengths is the ability to create on the move. He's not the fastest QB but he has an AMAZING pocket presence that keeps him out of trouble. Hopefully his knee will allow him to still do that. The WRs will be deep as usual, but a little less experienced than in the past. Patrick Edwards will be great again this year as the primary receiver. If you want to lose your lunch, watch the youtube video of him breaking his leg 2 years ago. It's worse than watching the Theisman video. I don't know he came back and still seems to be as fast as ever. One of the surprising bright spots will be the RBs. We'll be getting Sims back who was CUSA freshman of the year in 2009. He's very explosive. The main workhorse back Beall was CUSA freshman of the year before that. And we have an all around back that got a lot of time last year. The OLine we don't know much about yet. We lost plenty there but hopefully they'll at least be average. If they can do that, it should give Keenum enough time because he is such a fast decision maker. A new Center is scary is this offense because the snaps have to be on. The defense will determine whether UH is good or great. If the defense is even average, UH will be great this year. If they're anywhere near as bad as they've been the last couple of years, we'll be good. We can score with anyone even with a bad defense, but if we have a decent defense, no one can keep up with our offense. Run defense has been the Achilles heel. And even worse, running QBs really hurt UH. I'm curious how Dunbar will do against the UH D. I'm sure he'll get his yards. He's too good not to. But if that's all UNT has, UH will be able to outscore them. I can't wait to see Carrier returning kicks again. You don't want to miss him if he touches the ball on kickoffs. He's returned 6 kicks for TDs in his career including 4 in 2009 and is looking to break the record. He runs track for the UH track team and is one of the fastest guys in Track, not just football. He's a solid receiver too. Click here to view the article

  19. I think I'll make it if you can stand a UH fan there. Wife is out of town this weekend and I'm starving for anything college football. I might just adopt UNT as my second school and give them some of the local support they deserve.
  20. That's the formula. Of course it didn't hurt that Air Force had the #3 rushing offense and #5 passing defense in the country. UCF has been the only other team that has been able to consistently apply that formula. They had the #8 scoring defense in the country in 2010 giving up 17 PPG and #42 in 2009 giving up 22 PPG. UH scored more than 30 both years. So it can't be an average defense with the run game. It needs to be a great defense. Mississippi State had the #9 rushing offense in the country in 2009 and rushed for 330 yards against Houston and still lost.

  23. Went to grade school through high school in Mesquite, and went to UH from 1986 to 1991. 1st season at UH we went 1-10, but it got better. I was there for the best run and shoot years. I was there at the 95-21 SMU game and the Rice game when they announced the Heisman winner. UH isn't like UT, aTm, or even TT and TCU. We have never had many t-shirt fans.
