  1. Plenty of Coogfans already in Denton, Lewisville, Corinth already. I moved to Denton about 12 years ago when my wife went to school at TWU. Now east of Denton on 380. And we can talk that kind of Frenchy's for food too, Beth Marie's Frenchy's orange sherbet.
  2. Frenchy's Chicken less than a block away from the stadium is some of the best fried chicken you've ever had. I love Babe's, but I'll take Frenchy's. How far do you want to go from the stadium? I could say restaurants like Kim Son which has great Vietnamese food is about 2 miles away. Hell, Minute Maid park and that entire area of down Houston is less than 5 miles away.
  3. How about Mr. Chopsticks?
  4. Tons of talent, but doubtful that he'll ever get his head right with ball. I wonder if he can play FCS this season or if it is too late. I can't imagine him being disciplined enough to sit out a whole year without football. He has enough trouble staying disciplined with football.
  5. I thought Mazatlan and El Matador were same owners. Mazatlan is pretty good for breakfast. But we're an El Matador family for any other time. While their menu items are good, I think the specials of the day are almost always better.
  6. I'm a fan of the GreenHouse. They have a nice variety of food. Not far off the square. Anyone been to the Love Shack? The menu looks like burgers and sandwiches, but I'm intrigued that it was opened by a celebrity chef who appeared on Top Chef Masters and beat Morimoto on Iron Chef America.
  7. +1 on Beth Marie's, especially on The Square. I'm slowly working my way through every flavor (I've had at least 20), but they keep adding more. I can't recommend the jalapeno flavored though and I'm scared of the bacon flavored. Some of the local restaurants also carry Beth Marie's. If you see it on the menu, get the Beth Marie's Shiner Bock ice cream. Great stuff. Makes me want to make a Shiner beer float. I haven't tried the Jack and Coke flavored yet. The alcohol flavored ice creams they don't sell at Beth Marie's.
  8. Denton is close enough that the entire DFW area is really available to you. Are you looking primarily at Denton for hotels/restaurants? I don't know much about hotels so I'll let others handle that What kind of restaurant are you looking for? I love that Denton has so many hole in the wall, college student oriented, fairly cheap restaurants, but I don't know if that's the kind of thing you're looking for. Are you looking for something nicer than that?
  9. Sorry. Here's one Coog fan that got my ticket this morning and will be in 102. I'm not one of those annoying opponent fans though: win, lose, or draw. And I can take the friendly razzing.
  10. It was an odd numbered year. Everyone knows that George O'Leary has never had a losing season in odd numbered years, so they were expecting something. Weird stat, but true. They also went 10-4 that year and won CUSA so if we want to continue the comparison, UNT should have an awesome year if they beat UH. Of course I think UH is going to be pretty good this year so if UNT can beat UH, they should beat most of the other teams on their schedule.
  11. I believe UH was at about 5-6k three or four years ago. We've really made big strides the last 3 years. Last year UH sold 11,400 season tickets. We had over 30k for every game and came within 2k tickets total for selling out the entire season. Almost all of those were in the last game. The athletic department is shooting for 15k this season, but that may be a little ambitious. I think there are two major catalysts that make season ticket sales really snowball. First is selling out the "big" games on the schedule. If fans become afraid of missing the big game, they'll buy season tickets to guarantee they can go, even if they don't attend every game. The next but smaller boost is selling games out early. If it becomes a hassle to get tickets on game day, some fans will just buy season tickets to make their game day experience worry free.
  12. Houston receiving votes. Let's hope we beat UCLA so we have some more when we come to Denton.
  13. Is that a hugh annoyance to you?
  14. Interesting theory. I looked at SMU and UCF in the first games in their stadia to see how they did. SMU opened the season in their new stadium coming off of a 4-6 season. They beat Kansas 31-17 on their way to a 3-9 season. Kansas was hardly a world beater themselves going 4-7 that season beating 7-4 UAB, SIU from the FCS, 3-9 Mizzou, and 3-8 Colorado. So SMU did beat probably a better team. It may have been their best win of the season. You can debate 4-7 Kansas or 5-7 Tulsa. After beating NCSU on the road in their opening week, UCF lost its first game in Bright House Stadium to UT 35-32. UT went on to be 10-3 and finished #10 in the nation. UCF went 10-4, won CUSA, but finished unranked. What does this mean for the UH/UNT game? Nothing.
  15. I figured it was partly based on a boost from first game in the new stadium. But I don't think the boost is greater than the gap between Houston and ULM.
  16. Let me get this straight... You have UNT beating UH, but losing to ULM? If UNT beats UH, you should have no trouble at all beating ULM unless something drastic happens between those two games. If you're able to beat UH, I don't think you lose to FIU or Troy either.
  17. Regarding the link, I'm guessing that is a Scout thing. In the old wild west world of team message boards prior to Coogfans being associated with Scout, there were links to opposing teams' boards. Now the only team links are to Scout sites. There also seems to be now some moderating to remove links to Rivals topics. I can't say that for certain though because I'm not involved with the running of the site.
  18. No offense, but that is the third topic started in the last 3 weeks with the subject of pics of the UNT stadium ON A UH BOARD! And it's not like the old threads have dropped off. 2 are on the 1st page and one is at the start of the 2nd. I can understand the excitement, and I can see multiple threads starting here, but at a minimum, I'd think on a UH board, you might keep all of the stadium pics on the same thread. Otherwise, it really starts to look like overkill and even rubbing UH fans' faces in it.
  19. The University of Memphis struggles with the same thing. They were Memphis State from 1941 to 1994 when they changed their name. Despite their recent basketball success, you still hear some older announcers call them Memphis State, probably because of the great history they had in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. But as they have more recent success on a national level, the change to the newer name is being more widely recognized. While North Texas has had recent success in conference, most of their national success was under the old name. So the older announcers will probably continue to think NTSU when they recognized the greater success. Regarding academic vs athletic branding, we have that fight at UH too. The academic side uses the traditional "skinny" logo that was on the football helmets from 1962-1998. The athletic side has been using the "fat" logo since 1999. You want to see some heated debates on Coogfans, start the discussion on what logo should be on the helmets. We'll be using the old logo on throwback night against Marshall. I expect to see long discussions about it after the game.
  20. Reliant would be the temporary home. Not really sure how it would affect attendance. Playing on campus with the great UH tailgate scene definitely has its benefits, but playing temporarily in a world class facility might have a positive effect too. The atmosphere will definitely suffer. The revenue will likely suffer too due to paying rent and lack of concessions/parking. But you take a temporary loss for the benefits later.
  21. The current proposal puts the new stadium basically in the same location as the current stadium. So we do have demolition costs, but we do not have land acquisition costs.
  22. Definitely no bad intent and I think UNT is definitely getting a quality stadium. I was talking solely the $78mm price tag. UH could build a cheaper 40K seat stadium. Look at UCF's Bright House Networks Stadium. Built in 2006, it cost $55mm and holds 45k. $78mm would be a 42% increase in just 5 years over that cost. So I think a 40k seat stadium could be built for much less than $120mm if going the cheap route. UNT definitely went for quality over quantity. UCF went for quantity. Hell, when their stadium was opened, it didn't even have water fountains and the entire stadium bounces if the fans jump up and down. UH is trying to do a little of both, a little of the quality of UNT with a little of the quantity of UCF.
  23. Fair enough. I'll ignore the troll and I hope you guys do too because as the game gets closer and more UH fans show up here to talk about the game, I guarantee he will post more and more negative UH posts as he does on every board he's ever posted on. I've been on this board for a while now and you guys have seen that I support UH, but that I'm starting to follow UNT more as a second school to enjoy since I lived in Denton for 3 years and have lived in Providence Village for 8. I love college football and it's great to have a team so close to enjoy. This guy riles me like few others. That's what trolls do and obviously I'm falling for his bait. It's just hard when you see someone with no stake in the game to bash your school over and over. I hope I continue to have great football chats with all of you real UNT fans.
  24. And where do you see UH fans bragging about attendance? You may see 1 or 2 posts, but you'll see dozens saying we've improved (which we are proud of and will talk about) but we need to continue to improve. And if you think coog57 is an idiot, I'd hate to see what that makes you. He's one of the top 100 trial lawyers in the US. You and your literalness. Maybe he should have said UH needs a stadium 1.5 to 1.67 times larger. Would that make you happy? But no, you have to explode things out of proportion because he wasn't precise to 2 decimal places. Hey UNT fans, did ANY of your fans doubt that UNT would ever build a new stadium? OMG, some pessimist posters on a message board (that probably know nothing) think UH won't get a new stadium so we're doomed to fail. Have you never been on a message board? There are varying opinions on them. Some know what's going on. Some are clueless. And some are trolls like you who just like to stir things up. I remember you read a UH message board troll saying that UH had secured naming rights and we were getting our Big East invitation the next week. So you had to go trumpet it on the Big East board to show how "delusional" our fans were. Never mind that MOST of the posters on that thread said it wasn't happening at that time. Some fans think the end zone is odd. Is that laughing at the stadium? Also on that thread... "unt's football facility dusts us." "UNT's stadium looks fine, and I am happy for them." "Stadium is coming along nicely. It actually looks better "live" than in the renderings." "I think it's nice--distinct. Congratulations Mean Green fans." "Exciting for you guys! I hope you enjoy your new home!" Whoa! What horrible insults! BTW one of the posters "laughing" at the stadium was a UNT fan: "And if you think the end zone is strange, wait until you see the windmills that will be installed to help power the facility! Should make the environmentalist happy. Personally, I think they will be an eyesore." Quit trying to stir up trouble here. You're not a UNT fan. You're a UH hater for some reason (I know. You don't like that UH fans think we "deserve" to be in the BCS when we haven't "earned" it. Do you hate UNT because some of their fans think they "deserve" to be in CUSA or the MWC when they haven't "earned" it? Whatever that means.) Wish I knew what school you went to so we could see if your school "earned" it. There are tons of AQ schools that earned nothing other than they were in a conference 100 years ago. And congrats, of your 5 posts, you actually made 1 that was about UNT. Unfortunately it was to say that UNT is not worthy of your support, just a school to use to try to advance yourself. You should be so proud. But in that 1 post, you still managed an attempt to put down UH. That makes 5 for 5 posts on this site negative about UH. Why the hatred for UH? Why do you go so far as to come on a UNT board (where you go to school) JUST to post about UH that you have NO affiliation with? Why do you go on a Big East board to do the same thing? I've never seen one go so far out of their way to just to put down another school that they have no affiliation with. You've never posted on the UNT board about UNT, but a game with UH is coming up so you need to be on here to post negatively about it. And what school do you support that you went to for your undergrad? I'm sure these people want to know since you're saying UNT is not worthy of your support, but your other school is. And what name do you go by Coogfans? Does anyone on this board trust someone who goes by multiple screen names, won't say all of their screen names, and won't reveal what school they went to?
  25. So why don't you go ahead and call UNT fans delusional? How long has it been since UNT has averaged 20k in attendance? So why do they need a 30k seat stadium? The reason: You plan for where you're hoping to go, not where you've been. I'm hoping UNT makes it to where they not only need the 30k seats, but that it also has to expand past that. Based on their history it's going to be tough for them. But I'm not going to call them delusional for building a 30k seat stadium because they're building for the future. Does UH need a 60k stadium this year? No. Will we need it in the next 5 years? Doubtful. But we didn't really need a 30k seat stadium 5 years ago. This season UH probably needs about a 40k seat stadium based on last year's attendance and a linear regression of attendance over the last decade. Instead we'll just sell out all of our games this year which increases season ticket demand in the future which increases overall attendance. So we hope to build 40k soon based on recent goals and projected growth. But you prepare to need 50+k if the growth continues Not that you care about the answer, you're only trying to point out UH negatives, but I'll answer your question for real UNT fans in case they're curious: Regarding UH's stadium funding situation, we're at $51 million of the $120mm without naming rights and without going to the general UH population, still sticking to just the big dollar donors. We need approximately $29mm more to start building. Initial estimates in the independent feasibility study had naming rights estimated at $30mm. That may be high, but I guess it depends on the length of the contract. UCF got $15mm for 15 years in 2006 from Bright House Networks. Supposedly there are 3 bidders currently for UH naming rights. We'll see how that goes. Regarding your question about Coogfans laughing at UNT's stadium? No one has done that. We wish we had a new stadium too. Luckily, UH's needs right now and for the future are larger than what UNT currently needs. We already have a stadium that holds more than 30k (although UNT's is newer and nicer) so we don't need a 30k stadium. We need a larger stadium at a higher cost. If we wanted to build a $78mm stadium, we have enough funding in place to start construction. But we're building a $120mm stadium. It's going to take us some more time. But we will get there, just like UNT got the stadium they needed. I'm sure there are plenty of UNT fans who weren't sure that the day would come when they'd get a new stadium. Congrats to them. I for one am going to enjoy that stadium the 1st game of the season and hopefully more. I may even make the Mean Green Stadium movie night. It sounds like a fun event. And like many UNT fans, I'd love for UH and UNT to start scheduling a home and home series. I think it would be a win-win for both schools. Close enough that fans can travel. Don't have to take 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 series with AQ schools. Screw them. If they won't do a home and home (or even 2 for 1s when you beat them), let them have FCS schools.
