I've finally realized we/ve got a provisional
eulesseagle replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
Green Grenade, I can appreciate your frustration but: 1. The first game we ran the ball about 73% of the time. 2. The second game we ran the ball 62% of the time. 3. The third game we ran the ball 55% of the time. 4. The fourth game we ran the ball 53% of the time. I think DD and RF are trying to adjust to the talent that we CURRENTLY have and their abilities. I will have to agree with the majority of the posts that if we foresaw that our running game was going to be this inept, at this point of the year, DD and RF may have instituted what they are trying to do now. It is probably a little difficult to implement "Plan B" during the start of the season on what you have been practicing during Spring Drills. I think that we have to be patient and see what happens. At least the team has had some extra days to practice and get a little more health. On another note, annually, I would like us to play one money game, two mid-majors and one D-1AA team. -
back in the 60's WTSU had Dwaine Thomas and what other famous NFL runner in the same backfield????????
-
This is Coach Dickey's decision on how they perform in practice!! We want consistancy as much as possible now. I am fine with Meager.
-
If you take a look at the four games we have played the run to pass ratio looks like: Game 1:MTSU 60 plays............44 run (73%).........16 pass (122 yards) Game 2:Tulsa 58 plays...........36 run (62%)..........22 pass (59 yards) Game 3:K-State 47 plays...........26 run (55%)..........21 pass (74 yards) Game 4:Troy 58 plays...........31 run (53%)..........27 pass (129 yards) Our QB's are 38-86 (44%) average 96 yards per game. Evidently, DD is going to more passing.

ElPasoEagle---I totally agree with you and everyone else who wants to see a better winning percentage against OOC opponents. Keep in mind that we can not do that playing against teams similar to Texas, Oklahoma, K-State, Alabama etc etc.....Like I stated before it is tough, but not impossible, for Mid-Majors to have a consistant winning percentage against BCS schools. Granted, I would like to see DD & his staff "evolve" our team into more of a "balanced attack" program instead of his current philosophy of the run, keeping the game close to the 4th quarter to see if we can win!!! I believe we just need to start kicking butt and taking names from the first play. Just let the other team know that we have no intention to keep the game close for three quarters to see if we have a chance of winning!!!! If that means running the ball on someone 80-90% of the time to win the game so be it......if it means "chunkin' the pumkin' 80-90% of the time to win or any other combination then so be it........!!!! What our biggest concern is: 1. We play too conservative and not play to win from the onset of the game!!! 2. Our OOC, in the past, has been over-loaded with the Big BCS schools. I will agree with many of you that: 1. We need to play more OOC games with Mid-Majors and fewer with BCS schools. I see nothing wrong playing a Texas D-1AA team annually kinda like what some of the other D-1 Texas schools do. 2. We still need to play in the $$ games for the budget!! I want to see our team and our coaching staff be sucessful in all their endeavors at UNT. I do not want to set anyone up for failure. DD has done a great job for UNT but by watching the Troy game it was apparent to me that he was actually getting away from his old philosophy of "the run." We will have the opportunity to see what he is going to do for the remainder of the season on the % of run/pass. I have confidence in DD and his staff to come up with the right game plan and adjustments.

Eagle-96---you just proved MY point!!!!! If you could ONLY find 4 Mid-Major Schools, which in the last four years that had winning records against BCS schools you prove my point of consistancy. There are, probably, 50 or so Mid-Major Schools and if only 4, or so, Mid-Major programs have consistant winning records against BCS schools, in the last 4 years, that is less than 10% of all Mid-Major schools having winning records against their bigger brothers. As you can therefore see having a consistant OOC winning record against BCS schools is TOUGH!!.....not impossible but tough!!! NOW, if you look at all NON-BCS schools against all BCS schools you may find that their OOC records against these teams may be similar to ours!!!! And that would be the NORM!!! So before you start jumping on the bandwagon wanting a replacement for DD, please look at ALL the intangibles. 1. strength of conference. 2. mid-major vs bcs school match ups. 3. mid-major vs mid major match ups. 4. mid-major vs d-1aa records match ups. If you are not comparing apples to apples then you are NOT making a legitimate comparison.

ElPasoEagle--If you remember the SBC was a step above the Big West, at that time, which was at the time that the BWC was disolving. Everyone was in favor of moving to a better conference. Personally, UNT should always strive to get into a better conference but until that time arrives we still have to win in football, basketball and all other athletics as well as upgrade our facilities. UNT terminated Dennis Parker, when we were moving from D-1AA to D-1 for a "Big Time Pac-10" assistant coach from Washington, Matt Simon. Personally, I think we should have kept Corky Nelson who like DD had a poor showing his first four years 16-28-1 (35%) vs. his last five years 32-24 (57%). As long as UNT can stay dominant in the SBC we will always will have a chance to move up to a better conference. This is why it is important to (as Dandy Don would say), "Dance with the one who brung ya."
-
ElPasoEagle--you make a valid point about deleting the first 3 years of DD at UNT: 1998: 3-8 1999: 2-9 2000: 3-8 That works out to a 24% winning percentage!!! From 2001 to 2004 DD had a 29-21 record which works out to a 58% winning percentage!!! Glad to know that you wanted to know the sucessful comparison that DD has had from his first 3 years vs his last 4. Thank you.

SPACEMONKEY: Like I said, "show me the winning percentage of wins that MID-MAJOR PROGRAMS ( even the ones you mentioned, TCU, Utah and Boise State) had against BCS schools.......do not just say they are pretty good programs. Show me the numbers like i stated in my post!!!

UNTgirl04----again, you have made some dillusional statements: 1. UP AND COMMING--So you want to fire a Mid-Major coach, in a conference that is loaded with poor teams, who has won 4 consecutive SBC championships???? 2. EXPECTATIONS--How hard do you think it would be to replace Coach Dickey with a quality coach for about $200,000/year (and you have to remember that BCS coaches get about $750,000 - $1Million +)???????? 3. OPPORTUNITY--So you want to take a chance on an UP and COMMER??? well how about taking a chance on another Dennis Parker ( 11-21) or Matt Simon (18-26-1) Are you blonde????? -
UNTgirl04: My point, which you missed, is having an OOC schedule "loaded" with and loosing to the Top Tier Programs (BCS schools) verses having an OOC schedule "loaded" with mid-major and D-1AA (non BCS schools) and loosing to them!! You have to remember that UNT is a MID-MAJOR program (non BCS). Traditionally, Non-BCS programs can not recruit as well as Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas....etc.....(BCS programs). Mid Major programs loose against major BCS schools at a greater frequency than putting up a "W." Mid Major programs win against D-1AA programs at a greater frequency than putting a "L." UNTgirl04....if you want numbers look at the wins that UNT has had against OOC BCS programs and wins against other Mid Major programs and D-1AA programs and see if we fall within the "norm!!!!!" BUT do not expect UNT to have a consistant winning record against major programs like Texas, Oklahoma, K-State, Alabama, Arizona, Air Force etc..........we may catch one of these programs on a bad Saturday and win. UNTgirl04....you will have to show me what Mid-Major program has a consistant winning record against BCS schools in the last four years to make your argument hold any water!!!!!......other than that......well i will have to disagree with your premise and line of argument.

KingDL1:........what gives dude???? 1. 1991 - 1993... Dennis Parker's record...........11-21.......34% 2. 1994 - 1997... Matt Simon's record...............18-26-1....40% 3. The last 4 years of DD record......................29-21.......58% (note: I only put in the last 4 years to emphasize what a rebuilding project he had to do when he accepted the job as Head Coach in 1998). Our OOC games have been against, in the last 4 years: TCU 2x, Oklahoma 2x, Texas 2x, Texas Tech, Colorado State, Alabama, Arizona, Cincinatti, Air Force, Arkansas, Memphis, Baylor, and Southern Miss.. 1. You complain about OOC wins with these programs???? In my humble opionion that accomplishment would be difficult for just about any school!!!! 2. I think you would have the right to complain if we lost to schools like: Ball State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Ohio University, Vanderbilt, New Mexico State, Utah State etc etc etc........ ------There is a BIG difference loosing to schools like Oklahoma & Texas in our OOC schedule than loosing to schools like Ball State & E. Mich.------ I hate to admit it KingDL1 but YOU did NOT put much thought in your ramblings. _____________________________________________________________________

Eagle-96: Evidently your perception of creative plays and mine are different. 1. Going from 75-80% runs to a 50-50 balance IS being a bit more creative. 2. Your peception of swing passes, going deep, over the middle passes and "dump-off" passes are NOT being creative enough???.....maybe you can explain YOUR perception of creativity because I would like to hear it instead of you being critical without ANY examples. Be specific if you would please.

Do you really think that DD coaches to be fired??? That is like saying you work to get fired??? Jo Pa is #16 in the AP Poll......does that look like his days are over......???? Come on, man, get a grip. DD and RF are "re-tooling" for a more balanced attack. That takes time and practice..... By the looks on this board today, DD has the majority support and (just about) everyone is standing behind him on this endeavor to establish something that works to win. I would not count DD out or any of his coaching staff.
-
Risinggreen you are dead wrong about lack of immagination for this game!!! By your post you did not even see the game!!! DD and RF did more in this game on mixing up the plays than any other game in the last 4 years. Give them credit. Risinggreen, if you do not have the $8 to go see the game.....blast me a post because i will give you the money so you can see the game before you make such an uneducated post and insult the intelligence of all the readers and all of us who were at the game or saw it on ESPN2!!
-
This is the first time, in quite a while, that DD and RF had a balanced attack!!! We still have to remember that we have a relatively young team without too much experience. You will have to admit that DD and RF balanced the offense with about 1/2 & 1/2 pass / run. When has that happened before??? At least we know that DD and RF are begining to realize that pounding the ball up the middle this year is not going to work. Give them credit for the adjustments and implementing the adjustments. We all knew that the adjustments were going to have to come. And now when they have some of you "still" want to lambast the coaching staff instead of supporting them!!! What gives??? Meager is still a red shirt freshman but you will have to admit he is getting better. Would a JC transfer QB done better???? who knows....... All we know is that DD & RF feel that Meager is the guy that is going to lead the team for the next 4 years......DD recruited him, coaches him, knows him and his ability!!! We are going to have to realize this year will have to be a time to implement a balanced attack and that is GOOD. Since DD has been here many of you have complained about NO innovation....same 'ol same 'ol plays. NOW, since he opened the game up last night you still complain. Look at the POSITIVE side of things last night: 1. Meager is getting better. 2. Balaced attack. 3. Great kicker. 4. Cobbs and Thomas still look good and uninjured. 5. Innovation in play calling.....of course it still needs refinement but still looked good. The sky AIN'T FALLING!!! Support DD, RF and the Team....they are all still growing!!!!

What I expect to see tonight against Troy
eulesseagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I will agree on some of the points but we saw where we were adjusting to the Troy State defense. Adjusting our offense to what the opposing team has been doing has been one big concern for many of us on this board. 1. When was the last time that about 1/2 our plays were passes under DD?? 2. When was the last time that our O-Line has not been this effective against SBC Teams?? 3. When was the last time we had a Redshirt Freshman start the season as QB?? In my humble opinion what I saw was DD & RF begining to open up our offense to compensate for what they have not been getting through the running of Cobbs and Thomas in the past. Hopefully, they will continue to do this to spread out the opponent's defense and not have 8 or 9 "in the box." What may have seemed possible at the begining of the season to utilize Cobbs and Thomas like we had the previous years is evidently not working!! Give DD and RF credit for the adjustments by implementing more passing plays. In my opinion, again, the more balanced the UNT team is the more effective we will be....and that may take a couple more games. We have the personnel to do this. Meager still looks good and is gaining confidence every game. -
What I expect to see tonight against Troy
eulesseagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I think that RF did a good job in mixing up the plays. 31 runs and 27 passes. We saw some options, deep passes, short passes, half back pass and our traditional off tackle plays. 68 or 69 running plays from Troy. They ran though our D line like butter. Granted that we did not put up much on the board I think everyone has to admit that Meager is beginning to look better running and passing the ball. RF, in my opinion, had one of his best game plans that I have seen as far as the number of different plays. -
Supporting the Longhorns and other $ schools
eulesseagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I know this is too little too late but: 1. Don't all state legislatures, kind of, designate what school is going to be, "the major state school??" 2. Didn't the TX legislature designate just about all of West Tx lands to support "the" school?? 3. In one of my TX History classes one prof said that Texas A&M once had to bail out the Univ. of TX in the 1870's or 1880s, financially, or they would have gone bankrupt. 4. I guess the UNT's of the world are always going to be the "ugly sisters" to all the rich universities and will probably always lack in $$ for building improvements, prestigious programs/profs and really nice 80,000 - 100,000 seat stadiums that are packed every football Saturday. 5. In the end we know that UNT will always have: the best MUSIC department in the nation, 2 MISS AMERICAS, FRY ST., Haden FRY, really good FRIED chicken, FRIED brains from posting on this board, spirited conversations with alumi so we can agree to agree or agree to disagree. 6. Wasn't Austin College really the first Texas College before it had to be moved north to avoid Indians or Malaria or something like that??? 7. I tried to tip one of the concession kids delivering cokes/peanuts at the Tulsa game and he would not take it???? Said he could not take it.!!! What gives on that deal???? Is it University Policy not to TIP the walking concession kids/students??? 8. Can we bring in padded seats to this game without being hassled by the front gate staff??? 9. DOLLAR DOG NIGHT.....I'M THERE!!!! -

Your worst nightmare experience in class
eulesseagle replied to eulesseagle's topic in Mean Green Football
My only night class was Government taught by Mr. Brandis. This was the only class that had a 40-45 pt. curve after every test. The tests were multiple choice buy he always enjoyed making them as deceptive as possible. After we got our tests back, one night, and everyone making 35-50 one student asked him, "are we here to learn or play games with your tests?" We didn't have a curve for the next test and everyone made 35-50. That will screw your average real fast. Sometimes it just isn't cool to confront the profs.(back in the late 60's.
