Hate to pour salt in an open sore but: The two Mid-Major teams we were to beat this year, Tulsa and LaTech are bowl bound with, current, 7-4 records: Their defeats: LaTech lost to: #10 Florida (8-3), Kansas (6-5), Nevada (8-3)also CO-WAC champ and Bosie State (9-3) also CO-WAC champ. Tulsa lost to: Minnesota (7-4), #18(then) Oklahoma (7-4), Houston (6-5) and UTEP (8-3). These were tough teams this year!! In hindsight, UNT was only a touchdown away in every SBC game to go UNDEFEATED in the SBC, again. Next Year!!

Mocs still must learn man-to-man defense By David Uchiyama Staff Writer Freshman guard Jaycen Herring started against Asbury College but didn’t play in the second half of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s 97-60 basketball win Thursday. The Mocs didn’t need his offensive skills, but coach John Shulman wasn’t resting Herring. He just wanted to see if the shooting guard would play some defense. "I think the quickest way to a player’s head is through the seat of his pants," Shulman said. "If we’re trying to be good in the long run, we may have to serve lessons in the short run. "Jaycen must learn what we think is important. He’ll get there." Freshman forward Nicchaeus Doaks joined Herring on the bench for all but two minutes of the second half, even though he scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. "Coach knows I can score, but he says I give up as many points as I score," Doaks said. "I really want to work on my defense, because the better defense I play, the more playing time I’ll get." The freshmen have a chance to impress Shulman tonight when the Mocs play at North Texas at 8. Despite the 37-point win Thursday night, Shulman left McKenzie Arena with a sour taste in his mouth. UTC allowed Derek Bland to score 24 points in the first half against the Mocs’ base man-to-man defense. Shulman assigned junior Ricky Hood to shut down Bland in the second half by never leaving his side. Bland scored six points in the final 20 minutes. That result pleased Shulman, but not the method. "I don’t like going against our philosophy," he said. "That hurts my gut, hurts my heart. It goes against what I believe, but I’m not going to be hard-headed about it. I’m going to do what’s best for the team." Junior captain Casey Long said the problems with UTC’s defense starts with the simple fact that six of 10 available scholarship players are new to the system. Four players are true freshmen, and Herring redshirted last year. "Coach is trying his hardest to get us to do it right," Long said. "It’s going to jell eventually, but it’s not clicking for us right now." The Mocs have experimented with a 2-3 zone in their last two games and had some success. "I’m going to have to make a decision here soon," Shulman said. "We’ve got to figure out other ways to stop people." Long said he doesn’t anticipate standing at the top of the key and waving his arms to play defense this year. He expects to follow his man around the court, double on the post when necessary and recover to shooters — the fundamentals of UTC’s base defense. "We’ll do whatever he asks us to do," Long said. "We’re trying to prove to him that we can play man-to-man. "But we can’t talk about it. We have to do it for one game, then two games, then three games." He hopes game one is tonight. To paraphrase, BOR, Ray......"If we had a SPONSOR donating TODAY we could have it ready by 2009!!!!" What does that tell us??? 1. The stadium will not be ready by 2009 2. We are NOT close in getting a SPONSOR. 3. The BOR et. al. are NOT actively looking for a sponsor. 4. NO sponors are stepping up to build us a stadium. 5. There are NO public funds to build us a stadium. 6. Buying new facilities for UNT-Dallas, UNT-Law, UNT-Engineering, TCOM expansion, buying other lands and buildings to expand our presence in the region is more important than FB........MILLIONS FOR EDUCATION BUT NOT A PENNY FOR ATHLETICS!!!! 7. FFR needs to take Ray with him fishing....that post was on the board shorter than my bogus UNT mulling CUSA bid post.

Hey All---- Give the "UNT Daily Student Newspaper Sportswriter" a break!!! 1. He is probably a 19 year old Sophmore in Journalism 201 trying to pass the class. 2. Evidently, this numb nuts is clueless to the history of UNT athletics. 3. Appears he read this board but comprehended very little. This board should be "REQUIRED READING" for any UNT Sports Journalism Student & especially if they want to really find out what is happening with the sports scene. Heck, he could get extra credit or space in the paper by interviewing some of you. I am serious. 4. Let us all hope PlumMeanGreen e-mails him with a few of his "short" comments. 5. Seriously.....19 year old sophmore - Journ 201 student trying to pass. Be gentle.

DRC South Dallas Campus/won't open 2007
eulesseagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
plum-- You are right.....unfortunately i am having to agree with you more. More and more is being spent on education and not enough for our football stadium. If UNT and Ray are in the process of getting $40,000,000 in bonds for a new academic facility in Fort Worth and purchasing a vacant building next to TCOM for about 4-5 million (i think that what the Fort Worthless Star Telegram was printing this week) then why can not they do the same for a new stadium?? IMHO, I really do not know if you can use bonds to build a stadium. Who knows, in 2012-2013 DD may have to face a tough UNT-Dallas team. The more I hear about all this SMU connection the angrier I get!! 1. Bobby Ray from SMU 2. DD from SMU 3. RF from SMU 4. SMU's dominance over UNT 5. I fell like UNT is becoming a step-child for SMU. when is it going to stop??? I would like to take this time to appologize to the Mean Green Nation on that bogus post about UNT mulling over CUSA bid. I am sure that it upset a few and maybe made a few grin. Bordom at work yesterday. I appologize. -
UNT Mulling Move to CUSA 12:58 PM CST on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 By BRETT VITO / Staff Writer UNT administration has been contacted by represenatives of Conference USA to place an application for adminission for the 2007 - 2008 season. Rick Villarreal said he was surprised about the announcement and will provide the necessary paperwork and go before the Board of Regents with the request. "We now understand that Tulane is dropping football and what we were told they are looking at joining an NAIA affiliated conference in all sports. Villarreal stated that this completely caought us all off guard and we are going to look at the options. Coach Darrell Dickey was not available for comment. Board of Regents member Bobby Ray said that he would have to seriously look at the financial implications of making a move from the Sun Belt Conference, where UNT has been the pilar of the conference. "UNT is in the middle of upgrading university facilities and is proposing a $42,000,000 bond election for other off campus academic facilities and purchasing an abandoned building next to TCOM in Fort Worth," said Ray. Our main concern is marketing UNT as the best public academic school in the southwestern region of the United States. We now have added engineering and law said Ray. To look at building a new stadium at this time is out of the question said Ray. We have no money for this. It is out of the question if it is an admission requirement now or in the near future. Our athletic concerns are with Title IX compliance. The monies will have to go for more dorms and parking spaces for students. "I have a deep reguard for all the regional alliances we have with our Sun Belt Conference allies and my main concern is to build on these alliances. Ray said, "my other concern is of the vocal alumi who blog on some of the local sport's boards." "Three regents from three other Conference USA schools have stated this as being a major concern and embarasment to the university and the coference especially with PlummeanGreen and others. This is really not a real post and was fabricated for everones enjoyment and blood pressure and me just being bored at work on a slow work day. None of this is true. I repeat: none of this is true today. Go back to work. I repeat, go back to work.

PMG--- In all honesty schools like UNT are stepping stones for college assistant coaches and high school/JC coaches but sometimes we get lucky and land someone who has been a head coach. Other than Coach Fry did we or have we had a head coach that had prior college head coach experience?? Nobody is going to fire DD this year & that is a given!! Perhaps next year if he does not produce!! That is what I humbly read into the statement!! Next Year!! -

Regardless of who needs meds let me say this: 1. We have DD for at least one more year......so why in the blazes are we talking about when we "should" have gotten rid of him.....last year or 7 years ago. FACT IS THAT DD AND HIS STAFF WILL BE HERE ONE MORE YEAR, PERIOD!!!!!! 2. Whether or not BR, RV and DD are all Texas Good 'Ol Boys who hunt, fish, vacation and have lunch together ..... who cares ....???? 3. IMHO RV and DD have agreed to see what went wrong this year, period!!! We all know what went wrong because the note came in a hermanically sealed mayonasise bottle left in front of funk and wagnor's door!!! IMHO, this is a basic ultimatum to put out or get out next year!!! What else can you read into the message??? 4. For PMG you have one more year of eye blistering posts for us to read. Darn it, I agree with some and disagree with others but respect them none the less. 5. For MGE you have one more year to medically harass PMG's posts. 6. We will just have to agree to disagree but one thing for certain we have DD back next year......and perhaps a NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION. -
IMHO UNT/DD/RF have the talent to win the SBC next year and at least one OOC game. I think this year was DD's wake up call. Evidently, if he does not produce next year, and face it, UNT has DD for at least one more year......(sorry plumm)...he may be gone!!! My reading between the lines is purely speculation but when RV and DD agreed that an evaluation of the program "must" take place to me that means someone (or many) are/ is on the "hot seat." Of course RV can not come out and tell the world that if "any" coach does not produce the next year they are fired. In some programs that is a given. Speculation again but if DD does not win the SBC we may see a coaching change. UNT has the talent but I truely believe that everyone is in agreement that the talent was misused by the coaching staff. I think that may have been some of the problem and the other problem was that UNT had a young team and inexperienced Freshmen QBs. Why did not DD and the staff go after a JUCO QB?? Surely they must have know that there was a possibility that Byerly had a good chance of NOT making the grades!!! The coaching staff did not have a PLAN B?????? That is "below average in basic headwork" by the coaching staff.......... "F" for planning. By not getting an experienced JUCO QB, IMHO again, that cost UNT victories on the field!!!!! We will all have to wait until next September to see what re-evaluations that DD accomplished. If we see the same offensive scheme we saw the last couple of three games of the season I think that will be a good indication that DD has accepted that he needs to open up the offense and not face 7 or 8 in the box to stop DD ball. Hopefully, our defense will stop the runs better. Next year.

Coach Hatfield of Rice will resign. The DC at Texas A&M was fired........impressive record at UNC and Alabama as one of the top 5 defensive programs in the nation....didn't fare well at A&M. Frank Solich at Ohio slumped over drunk in his car....luckily found by police.

Plummeangreen must be fuming right now after what Bobby Ray said. I willing to give DD 1 more year....got to agree with BR on that. No donors lined up for the stadium???? If we had a donor today the stadium would be completed by 2009?? I get a strange feeling that there will be no stadium.

DD Contract provisons, as of May 2003
eulesseagle replied to bdan2002's topic in Mean Green Football
Plum- We will have to agree to disagree. I understand your point of view. To rehash the SOS again I am willing to wait one more year to see what happens. Granted DD's record is dismal for the time he has been here--OOC and overall. His first four years a 28% percent win rate and the last four 54%. Ok, these are stats again but what it shows me is some sort of progress. As far as how many games we win next year??? With the improvement we all saw in our QB situation and a year under everyone's belt I would go out on the limb and say we win all the SBC games and if we are lucky one of the OOC games. Texas will be coming off their National Championship season. SMU is 5-6 (this is the OOC game I would like to see us win). LaTech won 7 Tulsa won 6 or 7 -
DD Contract provisons, as of May 2003
eulesseagle replied to bdan2002's topic in Mean Green Football
Plumm- I say let us wait until the end of next year to make a coaching decision. As far as what RV and Daddy Dickey were saying....who knows?? Granted, I was not satisfied with a 2-9 season!!!......But.....this, probably, had to be one of the youngest teams that DD has had to work with since his tenure. At least this year DD began to get away from the run run draw offense that was the trademark of Dickey Ball, agree?? We saw this in the comments of the ASU coach who said that UNT was begining to spread out the offense and was passing more. Next year we will see if DD can produce with the team that has one more year experience with the QB's and the other starting freshmen and sophmores. -

FW Star Telegram Area top 50 out today
eulesseagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Oldtimer-- Agree, this is the first time that I remember that none of the area's top 50 or the state's 100 have not listed UNT as a possible selection. We are getting beat out by NMSU on recruiting in this area??????????? I think a couple of D1AA schools had some prospects in this area!!!!!!!!!!! This is UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OUR RECRUITING FOR TOP PLAYERS IN ONE OF THE HOTBEDS OF COLLEGE FB IS NON-EXISTANT!!!!!!! -
