I always found the BEST part of Las Cruces was seeing Welcome To Las Cruces in my rear view mirror. The best bars in Las Cruces are at the top of Oregon Pass....you know that big mountain that separates Las Cruces from White Sands Missle Range just east of town. Worth the trip....get some good authetic Mexican food up there too.

In all honesty, we have got to feel sorry for LaTech. They are probably the BEST WAC team reamaining surrounded NMSU, Idaho, USU, TSU, UTSA & a couple of really bad California schools......with the strong possibility (100%) of adding some more football subdivision schools to their conference. LaTech was passed over by the MWC, probably will not be considered for the MAC, may have a chance at C-USA if CUSA decides to expand by loosing a team or two. LaTech probably feels that they just dropped a bar of soap in the shower..............in prison. IMHO, I would accept LaTech into the SBC.....to upgrade the competition.

Edwards play during the Tech game almost reminded me of Shaunson Johnson. He didn't play that much but his move to the basket and dunk was awsome. That kid is going to be electric.

Ex-Heights Qb Vizza Tossed Football, And Scored Happiness

a friend of mine who got a fb scholarship to NT quit in the fall practice one year after he got two of his helmets busted by a defensive lineman. Of course he was only a sophmore at the time.....but the guy who busted his helmets was Joe Greene. I never thought any less of of him for quiting the team. As for Vizza.....that was one tough kid. Was not afraid of lowering his shoulder to take on tacklers but played during a horrible two years of a rebuilding process with a load of freshmen and sophmore players. I will always remember the Navy game. I will always remember Vizza as a tough kid....not a quitter.....he has my respect. -
http://lubbockonline.com/sports-red-raiders-mens-basketball/2010-11-17/north-texas-leaves-red-raiders-feeling-green?v= That had to be one of the best games I have seen in the Pit. Loud crowd, lead changes, Josh White with 2 seconds remaining shot to tie, loud TT fans, students rushing the floor like they just beat the #1 team in the country...electric. This should bring the students out again for the Rice game next Tuesday. I missed the first two BB games so this was the first home WIN I have seen (FB/BB) in over a year.

http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/sunbelt/north_texas/index.php That was another time and another set of rules. Now we have the BCS. Do you really think that NT could be top 25 with the same record against the same teams today? I say no....if they all played D1 or still played football as the case for UTA. If four or five years is pretty quick. I know PMG may elicit a response to this but I really like Coach Fry too and he did a great deal of good for NT and given the same circumstances today....who knows. Like BSU and TCU North Texas would have to show a great deal of consistancy for a couple of three or four years and beating some highly ranked teams to enjoy the success of coming near top 25 status the way that the BCS is formated and especially since NT is in the SBC which is the lowest ranked conference in D1 FB. Could NT become a top 25 team? sure they could and so could WKU......Is it possible? Anything is possible but I would be satisfied with a coach who could come in and inspire the players, as RD stated, in '61's post from the NT Daily. Appears that the players are ralling around Coach Canales and his philosophy at this time. I say ride the wave with Coach Canales while the players are positively responding to him and his plan....."Lock the Gate."

Appears we are at a standoff: 1. Do we want a guy who wants to be here and has put some inspiration in the team, help build a BCS Florida Directional school, NFL experience, brings his NFL lineman buddy because he wants to be a coach one day, appears to be a motivator outside of Fouts Field (even though some feel it is self promotion), had to be a solid recruiter to help build a program from scratch (IMHO, logic tells me that) and appears to be an effective speaker? 2. Do we want a guy who is currently out of a job and would, almost, take anything to get back into coaching if the price is right, has a little baggage (and who does't), has some sort of national name recognition and knows somewhat the state for recruiting? How much alums want to spend for this quanity and how much the University wants to spend are almost polar in some camps. 3. Venables? Does he really create disention with his players? You have 80+ players on a team and can you really expect 100% of the players to like you? Some players already come into a program with an attitude and never change.....some coaches come into a program with an abrasive attitude and never change. 4. Leach? IMHO, NT does not have the money to hire him and IF NT did would he come to Denton? 5. All others.......is it not really a "crap shoot" with no guarantees who will accept the job? Because some had success at one level does not translate into success at another. Plenty of examples for and against.....even in the SBC coaching ranks. 6. Top 25 rankings.....the Tribulation will come before NT is graced with a top 25 ranking in the SBC. Perhaps top 50 with membership in the SBC. Yea, point to BSU....but how long did it take for them to achieve their current status after we bid adeau from the Big West? Just does not happen over night. BSU just like KSU played a lot of give me games every year and now they do not load up on them as much. How long did it take....a decade....a decade and a half? Heck, I will be having a nurse aide feeding me through a straw and changing my dipers when NT reaches top 25. But might as well start again, now. 7. well got to get ready for the bb game tonight and put on my bullet proof vest and try to steal a braut from emmitt.....evidently he has never met PMG.....so I might tell him I am PMG...........

Journalism died a long long time ago.......is there really any truely objective journalism that is totally unbiased? Not any more. Opinions sell.....MSMBC or FOX? Walter Williams or Jessie Jackson? Communist Workers Daily or Drudge Report? Vito or meanrob? If you don't like the source don't read it because it is obvious what that source is going to propagandize...............................sometimes.

NT did beat one of the top teams in the Belt....FAU (4-5) and came within five points of beating the top team, Troy (5-4). Granted that is not saying much with how weak the SBC is but considering how Coach Canales has somewhat motivated the team is impressive. For me, having NT transition into next year with Coach Canales and the remaining staff is something NT has never done and with the NFL lineman (I can not remember what his name is) who is a volunteer assistant I believe that will truely help out. Can Coach Canales recruit? Don't know. However, the way the team appears to respond to Coach Canales I think this is a positive for any recruit who speaks to any of the current players. Can a big bucks coach recruit? Don't know. All we do know is that there are plenty of really good players on this current team....healthy and injured. The way that the players are supporting Coach Canales I say let him run with it for the next four or five years.

I guess he did it a South Florida.

Listening to Coach Canales, on the radio, during the post game interview, to me, imboldens an excitement that NT fans have not seen in decades. Both Coaches Dickey and Dodge seemed a bit reserved in their interview styles after every game. Coach Canales has some really up beat message intertwined with excitement. IMHO, I think he can bring that same excitement to future recruits. I do not think that NT has EVER hired an assistant coach after the departure, for whatever reason(s), of the Head Coach. It would be an excellent time to do so. NT keeps a verbally exciting leader, keeps Coach DeLoach....who made it known when he was rehired by Coach Dodge that this is where he would like to retire and a great promotion of "Lock the Gate." It is hard to discount that the team has bought into this along with the fans. To those who want a HIGH profile coach.....how much do YOU want the university to spend and how much the UNIVERSITY is willing to spend are two very different opinions that will continue to be debated until a decission is finalized. Again, IMHO, Coach Dodge did recruit some very very very talented players considering the "overall" condition of the team after Coach Dickey was released. Yea, there were some excellent players but Coach Dodge did recruit better than Coach Dickey and went after top rated players head to head against BCS schools. Unfortunately, for each coach who has entered the "graveyard" (PMG original statement)of college coaching at Fouts Field each coach has had to, basically, begin another rebuilding process (with the exception of Coach Rusk). Coach DeLoach has done an excellent job with the "D" and is now showing results even with all the injuries. I just think it is time to show continuity during this time of transition from Coach Dodge and hand the coaching reigns to Coach Canales. Having R.V. and the administration bring in another coach and staff may help.....but....then again it may not. It is apparent to me that adjustments are made during these sixty minutes of chess on a 100 yard long field. It also appears to me that the players are excited about having Coach Canales and the excitement that he brings. Coach Canales was running up and down the field yesterday with the players when BIG plays were made......when was the last time anyone saw that?

I guess for the same reason the NT joined the Big West and the Sun Belt. Some D-1 conference is better than nothing.....Personally, I am glad NT turned down the World Athletic Conference. Must be a financial drain to send all your sport's teams to Hawaii, California and Idaho.

Thoughts On Canales' Efforts To Land The Job
eulesseagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
PMG, I think that was medical marijuana. Seriously, I think we all agree (including PMG) that "IF" NT is going to spend "BIG" bucks, 400-500k, to hire a big name coach then we all have to agree that this "Big Name" coach better deliver with wins, recruiting, fans, marketing and some sort of sponsorship for the new stadium. IMHO, this is what has been regurgitated over the last three weeks in all sort of comments from soft serve to hard core vile remarks. "IF" NT historically goes with the same financial philosophy of hires since the retirement of Coach Mitchell (1966) then I am satisfied with Coach Canales and his current staff.....and.....I sort of got the same impression after PMG finished his second helping of another pound and a half of brisket and cobbler. No matter what some may think of PMG he is really a "teddy bear" in person who only wants the best for NT athletics. This is about the third or forth time I have sat down and had lunch with him and find him quite enjoyable to talk to. Believe it or not he is even complimentary about his adversaries. Call him up and I feel certain he will meet you for lunch. -
I vote for this man walking through the door..... of course I like this GA:

In 1967 the Egytian army was traveling north to Isreal during the Six Day War when the Egytian army spotted one lone Israli soldier crawling near a sand dune. The commander sent out ten men to finish this guy off and when nobody came back he sent out 30....then 50 .... then 100....and finally one of the 100 came back and reported, "don't send more...it's a trap there are TWO of them." -
While, my friend and esteemed collegue, from gmg.com may not be too diplomatic PMG does make some valid points: 1. PMG posted NT's FB record since 1981 (coach, OOC record, coference record,%'s etc) in another post and yes....not too much sucess. http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/sunbelt/north_texas/index.php I also remember a BB hire from the mid eighties when NT could have hired the Midland College BB coach who had won four five or six national JC championships in a row plus he was going to bring Spud Webb. Naw not good enough....I was disapointed becuz I was attending those games back ... way back then. 2. By a 5:1 margin many support hiring a "BIG NAME" coach than hiring Coach Canales. PMG has it right on. 3. PMG has it correct on historical perspective for the athletic program. I can validate some of the hires because they were inexpensive to obtain. Some of the older alums such as '61, OldTimer, etc........have all said at one time or another how Prez Matthews felt about athletics and how it changed with Prez Jitter Nolen then how it changed again when Nolen was fired....and how it has remained to this day. Basically, NT has Zigged when it should have Zagged. Case in point FFR relating the story of who NT passed up to get Coach Tyler. 4. Donors....? Don't know about that ..... will have to take PMG's word on that and he appears to be honest with everyone on this board. Appear that everyone is arguing how right everyone else is ..... ya'll are all correct it is a bucket of apples of different shapes, colors, textures & taste.......and "taste" is the ONLY way to tell the difference between an oral themomitor and a rectal themomitor. I'm not in that game but who is goin' to taste first??

IMHO, I thought the team played harder than what I have seen in a long time. I think everyone who stayed thought that they would pull it out at the end. I saw a great deal of progress and fight under the Canales watch so far. Even this older UNT coach ....in his mid eighties....(can't remember his name right now) grabbed my and was estatic how Canales has molded this team. Got to agree with him. I think everyone could tell that he wished he was back down on the field last night. This had to be one of the better games that I have seen at Fouts in a while. Is Canales going to be the next head coach? don't know. All I know is that I voted for him on Harry's coache's poll. 1. All I know, after last night's game, is that this team is not going to believe that the season is over. 2. The Boy Scouts should have brought more hot chocolate. Appears to me that the team is really responding to Coach Canales and the Lock the Gate theme. Coach Canales' post game show was very enthusiastic in his attitute toward the team and players. It is one thing to listen to the game on the raido, read about it in the paper but being there, last night, was priceless. If anyone needs some "chill pills" I have some in my medicine cabinet from a couple of three or so years ago that CBL and Quoner sent me. -
I would not put too much faith in rumor mills.....TCU to the Big East? There is only one school dumb enough to travel half way around the country for most of its games then half way to Japan to play another.....LaTech. Every year conferences release feelers....rumors....you might say that it is the politics of sports to run up trial balloons.....throw crap against the wall and see what sticks.....say stuff for effect and see who responds with what. The only place TCU will go will be to a highly "regionalized" BCS conference and Patterson ain't leavin' TCU.
