Question for Plum KingDL and others
eulesseagle replied to meangreen11's topic in Mean Green Football
win 2 OOC games, run the belt and beat the #4 CUSA team in the NO Bowl. -
OXatUNT- 1. Your point is that you want to keep a coach, that does not have a winning record in 8 years at UNT, until his contract expires in about 3-4 years?? I can respect your status quo opinion and "wait 'till next year philosophy." 2. My expectations, evidently, are a little higher than yours along with others who want UNT to excel. 3 winning seasons in 8 years.......can you name me one coach in D-1A or D-1AA who has had this luxury of being 39-55 after 8 years keeping their job?? This is an anomoly!! 3. To answer your questions, respectfully, I believe the standard contract is for about 4 years (generally). Usually the first year is a rebuilding year because the prior coach (generally) did a poor job unless he did so well that a major BCS school hired him away (as in the case of HF) or gave him a substantial raise as in the case of Petterson at TCU. I dont see any BCS school rushing to offer DD a coaching position (because of his record of "achievement" at UNT) nor do I see the BOR giving him a raise because of his outstanding record. You ask who would I get?? that is not my decision but hopefully the BOR and the AD can find a better qualified candidate who has been a sucessful college head coach who can turn the program around. OXatUNT, we will have to agree to disagree.....there are those who do not see any improvement in the direction of the program: 1. OOC loses have not brought in better players to improve the W-L record. 2. 39-55 after 8 years speaks for itself. 3. 3 winning seasons in 8 years speaks for itself. OXatUNT if you are not willing to state your expectations for this year then I can respect your "status quo" mentality. Do you want UNT to win 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 games this year??? that is all I ask. Put your expectations down like I have. If you want 3 wins and 8 close/respectable loses then put that down, I can respect your opinion.
-
My question to those who accept our current "status quo" situation is: 1. What minimul W-L record, this year, is acceptable to you to keep DD for another year? You know what mine are: Win 2 OOC games, run the belt and beat the #4 CUSA team in the N.O. Bowl. Do you think that is too much for DD to accomplish based upon: 1. Having 1 bad year out of 5. 2. Having a good recruiting class. 3. Getting a new DC. 4. Getting a new JC QB. 5. Having our current QB's with 1 year under their belt. 6. Implementing a more creative offensive scheme.

MeanMag- If you are complacently content with UNT being #161 in football I can really appreciate your opionion....I do not agree with it but I do appreciate it. By your statements it appears that you are satisfied with competitive loses instead of being "Tulsa'ed" into submission in OOC games. I do not agree. I believe that UNT should be able to out recruit, out play and out coach any team we play. It is my opionion that the current coach has not proven that over 8 years. It is also my opinion that winning 2 OOC games, running the belt and beating the #4 CUSA team is a realistic goal, if you truely consider that last year was an off year. If you do not have "any" expectations for the team then, IMHO, you are part of the "status quo" crowd who want competitive loses instead of wins. If you remember everyones last year's expectations were as high as what mine have been over the last several months because of the team that we were returning. Now, with one bad year you appear to be backing off quite a bit to lower your expectations of the team and the coach. To me that is egregious. If you have a student that is capable of making "A's" and "B's" and one year makes "C's" and "D's" do you lower his expectations the following year just to do the same??? UNT is capable of being a class program but IMHO DD is not the one to lead the team because of his coaching, recruiting and PR abilities. I am not degrading his character in anyway with that statement.
-
yea, i guess you are right....i should follow another sport......... well it can not be BB because we are rated #195 http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkt0506.htm to let some of you know I do support UNT.........but.........when the FB team is ranked #161 and the BB team is ranked #195 it is difficult, to say the least, to be pleased with the DIRECTION of the program that the university fathers have charted for us. If some of you are pleased to be "Brokeback Mountained" into believing that all is well with the "status quo" of our major athletic programs in D-1A then I respect your opinion.....I dont agree with it but I do respect that you have an opinion. DD and JJ are the pawns of RV just like RV is the pawn of the BOR. Someone must take responsibility to "chart a course" of success. Evidently, I feel like the "Ancient Maranier" with, "Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink." If the status quo of UNT athletics still remains below 100 will ya'll say, again, "wait until next year?" How much longer do you want to say wait until next year?? 1 year, 2 years, 3 years?? My expectations next year still remain: win 2 OOC games, run the belt and beat the #4 CUSA team....if not ........well, you know my opinion.....change!!!
-
It is worse than I thought: UNT is ranked #161 out of D-1A and D-1AA schools with 45 D-1AA school ahead of us..... http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt05.htm How does that make ya'll feel???? Any red flags waving and slapping you in the face?? Is this what 4 SBC championships have given us?? Is this what playing all the BCS schools have done for our program??? (OOC) Where are the better players???? (recruiting) Where is the coaching???? (you are being out coached) Where is the P.R.??? (f%$#*) These are just the facts!!! #161.......#161........#161........#161........#161.......#161 For those of you who say that we are over reacting ...... well, WE ARE!! Where is the accountability for this tragedy???? Where is the accountability??? accountability??? I feel like I am on the Titanic.
-
TI- In the scheme of events, talking is not going to improve or drive the program into the ground...... The bottom line is the W-L record of the team via what the coach is capable of doing on the field. Case in point, in BB, look at Bobby Knight at Indiana. That, IMHO, was a love-hate relationship but the man won games. The opposite is that DD does not have a winning record since his tenure. You say that we have been to four bowl games in the last five years....ok.....but the vast majority of D-1A schools that have winning records go to a bowl game and one year two schools from the SBC went to a bowl.....UNT and Troy. We should get away from what is and what is not being said by RV/DD and concentrate what is going to happen beginning in September. All these he-said/she said statements are OLD. I believe we should know where UNT is headed by the end of September, by our OOC record, and if changes need to be made then then, hopefully, they will be made at the end of the season.
-
Personalities aside, I still say that DD may be a great person to sit down and have a brewski with....I have never persoanally met the man but if MedPilot says that he really is a good man then I will take his word for it. I have nothing against the man, his family or his personal life and neither does anyone else, according to the posts. I really don't care who he goes on vacation with if it be Ray, Bush or Cheaney. With all these aforementioned controversies behind us: 1. Tortilla Gate. 2. You are being Out Coached Gate. 3. F*^%$$# Gate. 4. Poor me Gate. Our major concern is: 1. Can DD coach the team to something better than being #107 out of 117 D-1 schools and probably #140 if you count D-1AA programs. 2. Recruiting!! 3. OOC games!! These three topics have been beat to death since the Tulsa game and I DO NOT WANT TO START ANOTHER FORUM ON THESE THREE TOPICS!! The bottom line is: 1. Can DD turn the program around next year or do we get someone else who can?? I will have to agree with the posters who say the DD is a fortunate young man to have such a W-L record and still have a job at a major D-1A school. 2. My expectations for next year are still: Win 2 OOC games, run the belt and beat the #4 CUSA team in the N.O. Bowl. I wish that DD has NO remission on his past ailments that sent him to the hospital this year and that the FB team remains healthy and injury free.

SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING? What About these things... "Stewardesses" is the longest word typed with only the left hand and "lollipop" with your right. (Bet you tried this out mentally, didn't you?) It's impossible to sneeze with your eyes open Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable. (I'll bet you're going to check this out.) No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple. "Dreamt" is the only English word that ends in the letters "mt". (Are you doubting this?) Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing. The sentence: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" uses every letter of the alphabet. (Now, yo u KNOW you're going to try this out for accuracy, right?) The words 'racecar,' 'kayak' and 'level' are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes). (Yep, I knew you were going to "do" this one.) There are only four words in the English language which end in "dous": tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous (You're not doubting this, are you?) There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: "abstemious" and "facetious." (Yes, admit it, you are going to say ..... a e i o u) TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard. Plummeangreen-- Another Interesting Post, again!! My question along with others who want to see UNT gain "National" status again is, "Does the main brunt of the problems emanate with DD alone or does it originate with the BOR/AD for allowing the "status quo" to continue past its "crash-burn-die phase?" Nationally, other programs "terminate" coaches with better records than what DD has been able to produce over his tenure at UNT, period!!! Many of us do not want the, "Wait until next year" approach to see what happens and then evaluate what happens. There are many individuals who have proven track records as head coaches (good or bad) that can bring us out of this "Dante's Inferno" of this current malaise that we find ourselves in. 1. "Status Quo" ain't workin'. 2. #107 out of 117 D-1A teams is embarrasing! (maybe #140 including D-1AA). 3. Our OOC record over 8 years is abysmal!! 4. Playing major BCS schools have NOT brought in the talent that can take us to the promise land. (maybe we have the talent but can not coach it correctly or develop plays that take advantage of the talent or lack thereof???) 5. P.R. from the current Administration, DD/RV/BOR, is "terroristic" to the advancement of our program!! 6. If this current administration wants to keep UNT in "STATUS QUO" then we, as alum, have just been "Brokeback Mountained" by our university fathers!!

What should be the prototype program?
eulesseagle replied to meangreen11's topic in Mean Green Football
Buff- I am sure that there are coaches who have college head coach experience that would be willing to take the reigns of this program who know how to recruit and develop a program with our budget. At the same time, IMHO again, it is the responsibility of the BOR/AD to make the decision to: (1) keep UNT in its current "status quo" status in our athletic programs (2) keep its current "status quo" for our coaching staffs and (3) keep its current "status quo" on building a new stadium. FWIW the direction of UNT is not toward athletics but directed at UNT-Dallas. Unless the BOR/AD change its current philosophy then the direction of the athletic programs will remain where they currently are: (1) #107 out of 117 D-1A programs, probably #140 if you factor in D-1AA programs....not even in the top 20 of D-1AA, an absolute dismal OOC record over the last 8 years and playing top tier BCS schools have NOT improved the quality of players and quality of coaching. This also takes in all of our programs. If this is the philosophy of our "UNT Fathers" then I am not opposed to loading our schedule with MAC, WAC and D-1AA programs until we get committed leaders to improve our current "status quo" in athletics. -
What should be the prototype program?
eulesseagle replied to meangreen11's topic in Mean Green Football
1. Well, to emulate anyone you have to start with a coach who can recruit. -------------so far 0-1 2. huuuummmmmmm......DD/RF -------------so far 0-2 3. You have to have an administration (including BOR/AD) who want to commit to the program. --------------so far 0-3 4. You have to have a coach who can adjust during the game. --------------so far 0-4 5. You have to have a coach who can win OOC games. --------------so far 0-5 6. You have to have a coach who is the Haden Fry of P.R.. --------------so far 0-6 if the BOR/AD are not going to commit UNT to an excellent program and try to get an experienced coach then I am for playing WAC, MAC and a bunch of D-1AA teams. UNT is ranked #107 out of 117 D-1A programs and probably #140 if you include D-1AA schools which does not put us in the top 20 of D-1AA. We have played over 30 games against the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, K-State, Alabama, Arkansas, LSU etc (under DD) and it has reaped "NO"......i repeat "NO" benefits to our recruiting under DD/RV!!!!!! For those who say you have to play big time schools to move up.....hahahahaha.....UNT has moved "DOWN." How do you explain that?? FWIW....this is not a negative post......it is a Joe Friday post (just the facts, mam). -
Did DD Really Slam The Fans In His...
eulesseagle replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Football
IMHO, I hope this is DD and RF's last year, regardless of this years record. UNT deserves a coach that is committed not only to (1) fans (2) football (3) fans(4) recruiting (5) fans (6) fans........ If the BOR/RV are not committed to "our" program and they allow continued overt public verbal abuse of fans in the press (writen/radio/personal) and allow assistant coaches to verbally abuse fans during the game (half time) then the "final" responsibility rests on the shoulders of the BOR/RV for allowing these unallowable acts to happen. #1: RV needs to go and #2: the BOR needs to do some soul searching with the help of the Texas Legislature to "immediately" correct these premeditated acts against the fans that financially support UNT. -
Rian Johnson, aka, Plummeangreen. Sign him up for the "Dark Side." To me, he has a very good perspective of what went on last year.
-
Eagle1855- We will have to agree to disagree. I respect your view point but what the BOR/AD et. al are doing is not working .... I have never advocated not playing any more BSC schools but advocate playing an easier schedule to boost our W-L record. If the BOR/AD are not willing to "commit" NT into a more competitive realm of play then why should we be "body bags" for other programs?? If the BOR/AD is complacently content to keep NT in its current status of the "Bottom 10" of D-1A athletics then, "why not play an easier schedule?" If the BOR/AD is complacently content to keep sub-standard coaches for 8,9,10,11,12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 years with losing records why should NT be "body bags??" If this whole political inferno that we are in is content to keep NT where it is then "Why not play an easier schedule for our viewing entertainment" so we can bring teams in that we can beat the crap out of???" Evidently, some of the problem is not with our current coaching staff.....the real problem lies in the commitment of the BOR/AD to either move our program forward or keep it where it is......in Dante's Inferno!! What it looks like to me the BOR/AD is complacently content!!
-
IMHO, since the departure of NTSU President "Jitter" Nolan in the 70's North Texas has lost its inititive to develop and keep a first class athletic program at North Texas. Sure, we had some brief moments in BB and in FB, that we can all point to, but keeping the "momentum" and I stress "momentum" has always taken a back burner. We have seen NT slip into D-1AA and try to revive itself with D-1A. We have seen the BOR give us two sub-standard FB coaches who can not recruit, win or put North Texas in an arena to compete with anyone other than the revival of the SLC school where we once emerged. This has left us #107 out of 117 D-1A schools and probably #140 if you combine D-1A and D-1AA. That does not even put us in the top 20 of D-1AA programs. We keep getting the carrot thrown to us by having the AD and BOR saying, "Wait 'till next year." We have seen Boise State turn around their program We are seeing SDSU commiting to excellence with their FB program. We are seeing FIU or FAU building stadiums and getting "quality" coaching talent to build their program with coaches who were once "major" program talent come into their programs. Some of you say that we need to keep playing major BCS talent to get the players we need to come to North Texas......BALONEY.....just look at who we have played in the last 10 years and look at our dismal OOC record......now ask me if that has brought us better talent and more wins.!!!! Until there is commitment from the TOP the NT BOR and AD will keep us in the Dante's Inferno of college athletics.

qksmith-- dude, you just proved my point. Look at our OOC games that we have played since the arrival of DD. http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/mo...n_the_polls.php (this is an easy site to navigate) do you really think UNT has gotten better by playing better teams all these years, as you suggest?? hahahahaha I will have to admit that there are a few of you who want UNT to be body bags for other schools for the money it generates. Where does that money go that you so dearly want?? I guess it gets applied to the athletic budget somehow. Heck if I know. I dont call getting beat by 40-50 points enjoyment. I call a close game enjoyment or one that we beat the crap out of someone enjoyment. Those are the games that we should schedule. qksmith--if Unt is ranked #107 out of 117 D-1A teams and probably #140 if you combine all D-1A and D-1AA teams then just about anyone we play is better. The only way to get better, is not play BCS schools like we have.....by now you can see our OOC record is disfunctional..............THE ONLY WAY TO TURN THE PROGRAM AROUND IS TO GET COACHES WHO CAN RECRUIT.
-
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/clubhouse?teamId=2132 Cincinatti had a cake walk OOC schedule but were 8-8 in league play. They don't deserve to be in the NCAA much less the NIT. Texas A&M had an easy OOC schedule but they got in!?!?IMHO they don't deserve an NCAA bid. Now look at Missouri State University (formerly SMSU): They got snubbed from the NCAA 1. They had a strong RPI rating of 20. 2. They beat ORU and Wisc-Mil as well as all their conference mates who are going to the NCAA.....go figure!! The MOValley takes 4 to the dance. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/clubhouse?teamId=2623 The SBC gets one bid to the NCAA and one bid to the NIT.
-
qksmith-- nothing personal but it sounds like you want UNT as a body bag school for the Big 12 and SEC for cash only?? So what are you going to do with the "big" bucks from these body bag games?? 1. You can not build a stadium with that revenue. 2. You can not start development of building a pro style UNT golf course with the land just given to us. 3. You CAN give RV & DD a raise and extention of their contracts for scheduling 3 or 4 BCS schools in one year. ________________________________________________________________ qksmith, IMHO, UNT should play schools within our realm of competition for a while. I do not oppose playing ONE BCS school occasionally but UNT needs wins not "Big Time" loses for vicarious viewing entertainment for those who "think" we can play competitively with OU, TX, LSU, K-STATE, ALABAMA....ect.. I am tired of UNT being a body bag school and you should not try to set UNT up for a 50+ point body bag loss until UNT gets compeititive in recruiting top 100 players instead of what we end up with. You have got to remember that UNT is ranked #107 out of 117 D-1 schools......and......if you include D-1AA schools we are probably ranked #140. UNT would not even be ranked in the top 20 of D-1AA schools. If you come back and say that that the only way to get better is play the better schools then you need to go back and look who we have been playing since the arrival of DD!! If that is your argument then UNT should be ranked, at least in the top 50. UNT has an abysmal OOC record.

GMoney--- North Texas beat the University of Oklahoma in 1967!! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . the freshman team!

i say dump athletics and all the athletic staff and put the money in another off campus program in Mineral Wells.
-
There are some pretty good Mid-Major BB programs in the NCAA this year. Unfortunately, none are in the SBC. I say the Zags will advance further than any other Mid-Major. I also predict that Univ. Southern Alabama will lose in the first round.

What is the best college venue you have been to
eulesseagle replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Football
Rice, hands down for football and basketball. Rice's BB gym with all the crazy fans remind me of the "old PIT" back in the "day."
