Coach Dickey is gone?? UNT can get just about anyone to replace Coach Dickey but they will still be stuck in the same situation that we currently face: (1) The SBC....the worst D-1A conference in America....and.....there are two D-1AA conferences ahead of the SBC. All of the conference FB playing members are in the lower tier of college football. At this point our focus should be on the individual who is calling the offensive plays, Coach Ramon Flanigan. If Coach Dickey wants to go down with the ship then he can keep RF until the end of the year......if not then there is nothing wrong in cutting the OC from the program and get someone else in here who can call better plays and get us more than 100 yards per game. As close knit as the FB community is then RF should not have any problems in landing his next job, either in HS, JC or as another assistant coach in the college ranks.
-
Eagle Man-- That is a pretty good idea........but: 1. How can you build a top 20 FB team when the SBC is ranked below two D-1AA conferences?? 2. How can you build a top 20 FB team when all of the SBC schools are ranked in the "lowest tier" of college football? 3. Even if we get another coach with his subsequent coaching staff UNT is still faced with the same inherent problems it faces today. If you were a recruit looking to play D-1A football the SBC is just about the last hope for recruits. 4. Not until there is another BCS shake up will UNT ever see the light of day to get a better program.....and.....where we are now there is no hope to achieving that goal.....of being a top 20 program. UNT is basically in the lowest pecking order of college football, D-1A style. Man, it really hurts me to say that. 5. The best we can do is win one or maybe two OOC games per year and hopefully win the conference or come in second with a winning record. Because as you know like everyone else second place in the SBC does not guarantee anyone of having an overall winning record. ********************************************************** I am not degrading your idea and I think it is a good one. However, the reality of where we are and where we want to go totally depends upon other conference expansions. In the lull of expansionism the best thing that, we as students or alums can do is pack Fouts Field every game. We need the attendance even in the leanist of times.
-
We can gripe all we want but what it comes down to is: 1. All other conference members fare as well as UNT in OOC games. 2. The parity of play in the SBC is equal. Face it UNT is not the cream of the SBC anymore because of the parity. 3. The SBC is the last choice of any H.S. athelete who wants to play in D-1A. Don't you think why we do not see any Top 50 or 100 high school prospects selecting UNT is because of the conference that we are in? If I were a top athelete in the state of Texas and had a chance to play in the MAC, MWC,WAC or C-USA they why would I play in the SBC?? 4. With Texas and some of the surrounding states being a virtual hotbed of the nations top H.S. atheletes, IMHO, it stands to reason that these high school players would much rather play in better conferences given a choice. 5. You have to remember that the SBC, usually, has at least two D-1AA conferences ranked above the conference that we are currently affiliated. That does not bode well for our current conference. 6. Yea, UNT should do better considering where NTSU/UNT has been over the last 40 years but those were different times, unfortunately. As one poster already stated today he has seen us beat Tennessee, in the 70's but also has seen us loose to MTSU on Saturday. 7. Everyone must know that IF UNT was even in the WAC or CUSA we could definitely recruit a great deal better than what we are currently doing. Whose fault is it anyway that we are in the SBC? Don't you think, in hindsight, that IF UNT had accepted a bid to the WAC a few years ago we could be doing better today in our recruiting and won-lose record? 8. The OOC wins that UNT has against these opponents are basically the national average for all Mid-Major schools. As sad as that is UNT is really not doing that bad on a national scale. Yea, we all want some sort of parity with other Mid-Majors like the schools that we have played but unfortunately we hare something like 2-12, since 2001, over mid-major programs. 9. Like RV has already stated Fouts Field did not keep us out of the WAC and IS NOT a determining factor keeping us out of C-USA. Would a new stadium be nice? Yes.....is it necessary?? NO. 10. The only chance that UNT has to move to a better conference is to WAIT for another "shake-up" from other BCS schools. Until then UNT and its coaching staff has to beat at least one or two other mid-majors per year and at least come in 1st or 2nd in the SBC. Heck, just about all the other conference members are in the same boat that UNT is currently in. There is still a chance that UNT can still win the SBC or even come in 2nd. Anything less than 2nd in the SBC (and a lot of times 2nd place) means that your team has an overall loosing record. 11. Would it be nice to see if some other coach could do a better job? Yes, but that next coach will face the same problems that we face today which have already been mentioned. The only difference that a new coach would bring in a new staff.

Those questions should be asked to Coach Ramon Flannigan

DRC: woeful offense in need of major turneup
eulesseagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Russ has some good points and some misconceptions...... MISCONCEPTION: In the Akron game UNT passed 50% of the time and against MTSU 40% of the time which really is not the Coach Dickey of yesteryear. Dickey is spreading out the team more this year with virtually no results, except for the SMU game. GOOD POINT: Russ is correct in calling our front 5 "flat tires." These guys are really bad. The offensive line (and there zone blocking scheme) can not make holes & defend against the pass rush/protect the passer. No wonder our QB's are rushed and running for their lives while the other team hurries their moves. No wonder JT has gone from Riches to Rags this year. -
On the bright side Coach Dickey did pass 40% of the time. I see that as an improvement/positive from his run-run-run game from days gone by. For those who watched or were at the game some of WW's passes were not crisp like they have been in the previous games. On one of his interceptions there was not a UNT receiver around. There were a couple of passes that were dropped and naturally there were a couple of passes that could have gone either way. The defensively.....there was no consistancy. At times our "D" looked really good and others they had no clue and was virturally pushed around all night. Offensively, I think we have a "mole" in the huddle. Like everyone's concern......if last year was kinda like a rebuilding year then why in three games.....Texas, Akron and MTSU..... are we only getting 80/90/100 yards total offense? ***************************************************************** Perhaps Coach Dickey's Achilles' Heal is Coach Ramon Flannigan our Offensive Coordinator. Friends or not there has to come to a point that the O.C. drags the program down the "tubes." Conversely, Coach Dickey (who has taken all the heat) has to make the decision to ride the wild ride with Coach Flannigan and both go down with the ship or "CUT" Coach Flannigan from the program with the hopes of trying to salvage the year with someone who can "kick start" the program. Other programs have "CUT" assistant coaches into the season and IMHO this should be considered, immediately.

"MTSU did not beat an outstanding team" "-3 yards rushing in the first half (UNT)" http://www.dnj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A.../610010327/1006

thanks GG... beat MTSU.. I will be there
-
The ONLY thing I was trying to convey was for Coach Dickey to make statements in a more "positive" nature ...... and I gave examples. I don't try to read into what he was saying because I am not a psychologist but there are two ways that anyone can say something. I am just suggesting that Coach Dickey makes statements in a more positive light. And for those who think that this is a repetitive post.......well, most everything on this board is a repetitive post by one nature or another.

UNT does not want to hear...........from the DRC these quotes, again. 1. "We are still working under very difficult circumstances, trying to survive....." 2. "I don't see this year as being any more important than any other year........" Coach, Can't you turn this negativity around to something more positive like.... 1. "We have now turned the corner and are ready to retake the SBC crown." 2. "We did not come here to lose"*** ***(quote from S.E. ...i think) If you think like a defeatist then you have already lost.
-
Awwwww come on coach...... "We are still working under very difficult circumstances, trying to survive...." "I don't see this year as being any more important than any other year......" Can't you be a little more positive for all who read this seemingly defeatist attitude? Can't you at least say: 1. "I am excited about the program and we have now turned the corner again to once again take control." 2. "This year is going to be our year in the Belt." If you talk like a defeatist then you have already lost!

IMHO it would be cheaper to refurbish Fouts Field than build a new one. RV has already stated that Fouts Field is CUSA approved and UNT will NOT have to build another to be accepted into CUSA. We know it was not a factor when the WAC offered us membership. Some say the water table is 20 feet below the playing surface. On what information?? Again, it would be cheaper to dig down 20 or 30 feet, move the field over to the student side, get rid of the track, and move the press box side closer to the field along with the end zone seats. (AKA Jones Stadium at Texas Tech). UNT could literally save millions from building a new stadium. As far as the team goes, IMHO again, realistically, if DD and RF put together game plans similar to SMU and Akron then UNT has a chance of winning the rest of our games even against LaTech who has lost to: Nebraska ....................... 49-10 Texas A&M........................45-12 and beat Nichols State........31-21 I can see the loses to Nebraska and Texas A&M but such a close loss to 1-AA Nicholls State??? If DD and RF throw just 40% of the time from now to the end of the year this will: 1. Open up DD's beloved running game and let JT run for 100+ y/p/g. 2. Open up WW as a legitimate option threat. 3. End the season 10-2 with a win in the NO Bowl....10-3 As much as I have personally critisized DD calling him "Keep 8 in the Box" and RF as "I can count all my plays on my digits" I will refrain from doing so as long as both of these former D-1A QB's can show creativity for the rest of the season with game plans that they are capable of creating similar to that of SMU and Akron. I will say that UNT has the talent .... now they need the creativity of the coaches to finish the season 10-3. As far as Fouts Field the refurbishing can be done between seasons. This refurbishing would give the Texas DOT enough room to expand in the vacated space of the Alumi section. Ok....this ought to be enough ammo to get some scathing responses.

A.V. I was comparing Mid-Major programs to Mid-Majors and BCS to BCS. Of course there are going to be differences in salaries, facilities, state supported vs. private and student populations in each category. Regardless of the differences in each category UNT should be able to compete with ANY Mid-Major program regardless of coaches salaries, facilities, private, public, and student population!! You base your argument that the higher the coaches salary the better the record. Wrong.........In that case Mike Price (UTEP) should have a record similar to that of DD.........and Rice should have a similar record to TCU (because they are both small private mid-major programs). AV---your argument is moot.
-
e-bone is correct in stating what most of us have been saying about DD. The chances of Mid-Major programs defeating BCS programs runs about 16% or 17% (or so) from some stats that were posted on this board about a month ago or so. However, I do not think nor does anyone else in the Mean Green Nation think that UNT can be competitive with the majority of the BCS programs. However, MTSU has had great success with Vanderbilt over the last several years on a regular basis. On the same note MTSU has had as bad luck as every other Mid-Major program against BCS programs. There is NO way that any Mid-Major program can compare itself with ANY BCS program. The ONLY way that UNT can compare itself in the world of D-1A is against other Mid-Major programs......Colorado State, Cincinatti, Memphis, S.Miss., LaTech, Tulsa, Air Force, TCU and Akron. These are all Mid-Major teams that DD has played since 2001, at least once and some twice. 2001.........TCU (L)........Colorado State (L) 2002.........TCU (L)........Cincinatti (W) 2003.........A.F.A(L).......Memphis (L) 2004.........S.Ms.(L) 2005.........Tulsa (L)......LaTech (L) 2006.........SMU (W)......Tulsa (L)........Akron (L) ---------- 2 wins & 10 Loses--------- If you want to compare apples to apples Green Jakel, et.al, then compare what DD has done against Mid-Major programs that are outside of the SBC. If you enjoy having UNT ranked in the bottom 5 percentile of all D-1A schools then revel in your lonely support. If you believe in the various polls, such as Saragin, which can be found in USA Today.....then you will find about 30-40 D-1AA (no this is not a typo) teams that are ranked above UNT. If anyone wants to compare apples to apples then compare what DD has done against Mid-Major programs and how we stand against our peers & not against Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas State or Arkansas. Is it nice to play against BCS schools??? heck yes it is and the university like the paycheck too. Is it nice to play against other Mid-Major programs where UNT should be more on an equal footing where we can truely compare our progress, equally, against other similar programs???? heck yes it is but UNT just does not stacked up to nor has this current football administration made any progress to rectify this this abyss. And this, my friend, is why alums such as Lifer, Silver Eagle, PMG, Coach, e-bone, FFR and others are frustrated about the (lack of) progress in our program. This is coupled with the various remarks that DD has made against the program, fans and players. Let us not forget about the verbal assault that RF made on S.E. last year in the stands in front of everyone at halftime. We look at other Mid-Major programs how they have "Phoenixed" themselves such as UTEP, Boise State, Tulsa and TCU to just name a few and just like the "ugly sister" at the prom......here we still sit just complacently content with no plan in sight. Yep....we won the Belt the last 4 out of 5 years and DD has won the Coach of the Year in a conference were UNT was the only team to have a winning record. In a conference where if you do win the SBC you can bet there are about 20 or 30 D-1AA teams ahead of you in the various rankings/polls. THIS IS WHY WE ARE FRUSTRATED.
-
Caribbean-- You can not be serious can you???? When your total OUTPUT is 29%(wins as oc), 40%(total wins at UNT), 16%(win in ooc games) and 25%(NO Bowl wins) that is, in your humble opinion, acceptable......???? Dude, this is just "simple math." Do you see any figures that resemble an overall winning record?? In your heart you know that I am right!
-
Green Jackel--- This is just "simple math." DD as OC at UTEP and SMU .........................13-31-1 (29%) DD as HC....................................................40-58 (40%) DD in OOC games.........................................8-41 (16%) When you ONLY have "one" and I repeat "one" SBC team after the end of the year with a winning record who are you going to give Coach of the Year to??? Sure we won the last 4 out of 5 SBC titles and won "one" N.O. Bowl (25%) These are sub-standard figures in any accountant's books. Like I said Green Jackel.....this is just "simple math."
-
Green Jackel-- I believe, like the majority, that DD has produced sub-standard work after 8 1/2 years! As an Offensive Coordinator with UTEP and SMU he was .....13-31-1 (29%) As a Head Coach he is..................................................... 40-58 (40%) In OOC games he is ..........................................................8-41 (16%) Sure DD has been the Coach of the year for four years and congratulations to him for that but what does that tell you of the strength of the SBC when, currently, two D-1AA conferences rank higher than the SBC? When you ONLY have 1 and maybeeeeee two teams out of the SBC, after the end of the year, with a winning record who are you going to give Coach of the Year to?? Green Jackel this is just "simple math." I do want to see the program win and IF DD and RF put together game plans similar to that of SMU and Akron where they are throwing 50% of the time I believe we can run the belt. If DD and RF put together game plans similar to Texas, Tulsa and the 2005 season then kiss this season goodbye, again.
-
If the B.E. does take some schools such as Memphis and whoever else they will not go after any of the current CUSA schools in Texas..... Ultimately, this would make a CUSA alignment good for UNT and possibly LaTech and a long shot of UTEP. Until the next conference shake up happens just sit tight and ride out the "wild side" of UNT football........and Basketball.
-
If Darrell "Keep 8 In The Box" Dickey and Ramon "I can count all the plays on my digits" Flannigan can keep what they were doing against SMU & Akron then UNT may have a legitimate chance to win the SBC. As much as I have disliked the play calling over the last 8 1/2 years and all the terrible comments that DD (poor me, it is not my fault, it is the fault of the players) and RF (screaming at Silver Eagle in the stands last year after he told him that, "you are being outcoached) have made.....these two actually have shown me that they have the ability to open up the game. My points: 1. This year just like last year when DD & RF tried to run between the tackles 90% of the time........we lost. 2. This year when they were throwing more......we won (against SMU) and moved the ball more against Akron giving JT room enough to do what he does best....gain over 100 yards. 3. Perhaps DD & RF can build upon this with WW as the leader and win a bunch more games. 4. Like I have said before we should know what sort of season -and team- we should have by the end of September. Until then we should get off this belittling attitude that some of us have about getting rid of DD/RF/RV. The ultimate blame for the mess we are in lies solely with the BOR and not RV/DD/RF..... If any of us could be allowed to get by with sub-standard work for 8 1/2 years and get paid the money that DD receives .... I believe we all would. Do not sell your tickets yet....go to the games.....get your butts in the seats and enjoy the games. Like RV has stated: 1. What is NOT keeping us out of CUSA is our stadium. 2. Until the next series of conference shake ups occur then UNT has to have attendance. I was seriously disappointed in the small crowd that SMU brought with them to Fouts Field.....really disappointed.
