How come NT cant upset big name teams
eulesseagle replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
UTEP home attendance for the 3 games that they have played according to the box scores are: Texas Tech.....51,800 NMSU.............55,500 SMU...............41,200 Those numbers are STRONG! Of course Coach Price gets about a dollar for ever seat over a specified number. I do not remember what it is. -

Rudy= There was a blog about a couple of months ago showing OOC W-L's for all college conferences. As I remember UNT is right at the median for OOC wins under Coach Dickey in our Mid-Major status. The numbers for this have already been posted somewhere in the plethora of threads on this site. What it comes down to is that Coach Dickey is "average" when it comes to OOC wins as compared to other Mid-Major programs. Again Rudy, as painful as it is and as it is with the rest of us, the SBC: 1. Is the lowest rated D-1A conference in America. 2. Has the Worst OOC record of any conference. Any mid major program has a difficult time beating any BCS program unless, as you know, you catch someone like Colorado (0-fer), Wake Forest (0-fer), Stanford (0-fer) or NCState (losing to Akron) in an off week. Not until there is another shake up in college athletics will UNT have a chance to move to another conference. If you read some of the blogs on the LaTech board, evidently, there is some sort of chatter of them wanting to move to CUSA, too. -
FSU aint goin ta fire Coach Hill! From 1999 to 2005 he was 61-31 with his worst season in 2000 at 7-5. He has consistantly won 8-9 games a year. Nice thought though but realistically it just is not going to happen.

Very Interesting....... Nice write up on FIU....... LaTech in the Bottom 10........this could be an OOC win for UNT! http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2620550 The remainder of LaTech's schedule is: Idaho 3-3 USU 1-5 San Jose 3-1 NT 2-4 Hawaii 3-2 Nev 3-3 Fresno 1-4 NMSU 2-3

I would be willing to support hiring a "tainted" coach for a second chance if that opportunity presented itself. A lot of people, coaches included, deserve a second chance and may produce a great deal of loyalty from that individual. However, given our current situation what would be the minimum record, this year, to keep Coach Dickey?? (1) 7-5? .... and goes to some bowl game (2) 6-6? (3) 5-7? or do you want him gone no matter what record he has ?? -
GMG'99- I appreciate your candor. If you go back and look at the number of times that Coach Dickey ran the ball vs. throw the ball from '99 to 05 (and I do not have the stats in front of me nor do I care to look them up) you would discover that he ran the ball about 80-85% of the time. Hence, Dickey Ball. This year if you take a look at the stats Coach Dickey is running the ball about 55-60% of the time.

The parking lots need more trash cans......the place is always trashed.

GoMeanGreen1999- You are absolutely incorrect on your statement of "put something more exciting on the field than running up the middle." Whether or not you like the coaching staff or not is not my concern but "IF" you take some time and go back and look at each game's "stats" you will see for yourself that the coaching staff has opened up the game verses years past. By your own statement you have not attended or paid a great deal of attention to games of yesteryear compared to this year. GMG'99, meaning no disrespect but there is a "big" difference in play calling this year. Coach Dickey is throwing more and has done some suprising on side kicks (I really dont know if the on-side kick we had against FIU was intentional or unintentional) and going for it on 4th down. I have enjoyed the games more this year because of the variety of plays that he is calling instead of trying to run between the tackles or Coach Dickey's old favorite: draw play on 3rd down. MGBuzz- 19,100 is an excellent average for three home games and the next home game against LaTech, Nov. 4, hopefully will increase this average. I certainly hope that there are some "PROMOTIONS" at LaTech and UNT to "PACK" the stands for this OOC game.

TIGreen-- I appreciate your frustration but the SBC is ranked #15 amongst all D-1A and D-1AA conferences. There are three D-1AA conferences that are ranked better than the SBC in 12 D-1A conferences. You can make a point that Saragin is skewed and it probably is but that leaves the SBC at the bottom of the heap of D-1A conferences anyway. The SBC schools have the WORST OOC record of ANY D-1A conference. The SBC schools are lucky to have two teams at the end of the season with a winning record. Yea, you can point to Boise State University. They chose "wisely" in their direction when they departed the Big West Conference and UNT sought to go another "regional" direction. Is the WAC a better conference, top to bottom, than the SBC??.....sure it is. You have the "powerhouse teams of Boise and Fresno and you have the weaker sisters of Utah State Univ. (an ex member of the Big West), Idaho(ex member of the BW) and San Jose State. Yea, we were once in a conference with Louisville, Cincinnati and Memphis in the MVC. They chose to go in one direction and UNT chose to go another. Yea, UNT turned down the WAC and we are now waiting on the perverbial "golden slipper" invitation from C-USA. What I have seen in the ump-teen years watching NTSU/UNT play, along with S.E. et. al.......North Texas does not make wise choices athletically, overall. North Texas has made some wise coaching choices but none (hindsight) conference wise. NT was in the MVC for years. The MVC broke up and NT went Independent....which was not a bad choice back then because many powerhouse teams were independent. Fry tried to get us into the SWC. Enough said there. Instead of staying the course in D-1A our "university fathers" dropped NT to D-1AA regional athletics. To me that was as much of a death penalty as was SMU's death penalty. NT floundered around as a independent finally getting into the B.W. until its demise and finally ended up in the SBC which was nothing more than the revitalization of the "OLD" D-1AA Southland Conference. With all that in mind.........UNT is stuck in the worst conference....but.....it does have some excellent coaches (FIU, FAU & MTSU) but still can not improve their respective programs in OOC games but as a whole are great on beating up on the respective members of the SBC. If DD was to depart UNT this year, next year, 2010 or whenever and NT is still in the SBC the best we could hope for would be 2 OOC wins and coming in 1st or 2nd in the SBC with ANY coach.
-
Again, you have to remember that UNT is in the SBC. Florida Atlantic has Howard Schnellenberger who has won a national championship. Look at the state of this program. He is in one of the "hotbeds" of college football. What better coach can you get than someone who has revitalized other programs across the nation? Florida International has Don Strock, an ex NFL QB, as coach still in one of the hotbeds of college football. Central Florida has George O'Leary another excellent coach but in C-USA. IMHO these are three excellent coaches that just about any college football program would love to hire. The difference is that two of the three are in the SBC and one is in CUSA. Yea, we could name off coaches that we would like to get at UNT but still they would be in the SBC. Not until we get into a better conference will we be able to recruit better than what we are currently doing. Again, IMHO, the best that UNT can do in its present situation is to win 2 OOC games and come in 1st or 2nd in the belt and hope that UNT can get another offer from the WAC, MAC, MWC or CUSA. If we do not get another invitation then UNT has, unfortunately, reached its apex in college football today.

DRC/DMN blurbs Wilson to start at QB/FIU
eulesseagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
IMHO, WW is the better QB of the three. WW has a good arm and is more mobile than the other two QB's. With the OL that we have now UNT needs a mobile QB. The OL needs to step up and be an offensive line. -
To PMG & UNTLifer- My sincere appology if I thought you were older. The wisdom that both of you interject on this board make you appear much wiser in years than your age suggests.

My break down of the Bottom 10: Remember that all the B-10 schools have NO wins Temple looses to .....................Kent State Utah State looses to.................Fresno St. Duke looses to........................Alabama E. Mich looses to.....................Bowling Green Stanford looses to..................#12 ND San Diego looses to................BYU Miami (Ohio) looses to.............N. Ill. FIU (check out these stats).......beats UNT.....now UNT is in the ESPN B-10 http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/2006/Internet/c...00000818TD.HTML Colorado looses to .................Baylor Mich State is in there only because ESPN needs a BCS school to rag on. I certainly hope that UNT can get its offense moving this week to beat FIU.
-
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2612025 UNT is on the waiting list.......... A loss to FIU will put UNT in the Bottom 10 of ESPN.

Interesting site for all conferences.....Just a bunch of stats so you can waste time at the office: http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/2006/Internet/c...00000818TD.HTML This section is for the SBC.

Dudes, This has got to be one of the most nuttiest posts in a while. You actually really think deep down in those shallow hearts of yours some "Big-Time" assistant coach in the BCS making more than Coach Dickey as a head coach would come to UNT?????/ hahahahahahahahahahahahha I think too many of you, all together, stopped on the way back from work and grazed on some mushrooms along the side of the road. Back in the 60's when UNTLifer, S.E., Buford Julip & PMG were going to NTSC/NTSU I heard there was some really good mind altering weed that actually helped your thought process.......but now......what you guys have been grazing on and eating along the side of the road had actually damaged your brains. Step 1: Go back and read the poll. Step 2: Go find out how much these guys make. Step 3: Would ya have the cajones enough to ask 'em for a pay cut? Step 4: Dudes, Coach Fry would have a heart attack at this level of play. Singleterry would slam you so hard to the ground you may never come out of the mental hospital. Step 5: Go outside a get a lung full of fresh air.....

A State Fan-- What you say is correct on the Saragin Polls but like I said can UNT beat these D-1-AA teams that are ranked above them.......? I think they could win about 1/4 of the games (maybe) on how we are playing today. A freaky win is a freaky win any day and the only place it counts is the W-L records for both schools.
-
I know some of you do not give a hoot about the Saragin Ratings but currently there are 21 D-1AA schools that are ranked higher than UNT and most of the other SBC members. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt06.htm Yea, there are three D-1AA conferences that are ranked higher than the SBC but I bet UNT would get beat by, at least 1/4 of these teams in those conferences like we are playing today. Do you think we would have a chance against Montana, New Hampshire or Youngstown State?? These teams have guys who were turned down by D-1A. What is wrong with that picture? Evidently UNT has inherent problems with various sections of the team that is not getting corrected soon enough and we all pretty much know what they are without getting into a disertation. Can these problems be overcome by utilizing the talents of the players, IMHO, yes. Do I think they are happening fast enough? no IMHO there are overall problems that are not getting corrected or not corrected fast enough for everyone's pleasure.
-
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc06.htm There are three D-1AA conferences, Great West, Atlantic 10 and Gateway, that are rated better than the Sun Best Conference. The way I see it, unfortunately, all the coaches in this conference are in the same boat as Coach Dickey. I am not advocating to either keep or replace the football coaching staff but these are terrible times in the SBC. The SBC is the last conference for any HS prospect to play D-1A ball. The SBC has the worst OOC record of "any" conference. The SBC has all its teams in the "lower" tier of D-1A schools. The SBC only has parity, kind of, because everyone is equally bad.
