  1. Wow! Great article. Basketball Jones and Dale Brown are two "class acts." I also remember that Dale Brown was standing with Coach Jones at UNT when he was hired.
  2. Memphis to the B.E. and UNT to CUSA is viable in the "next" conference shake ups/expansions. In the past Memphis has expressed interest in the B.E. to follow Louisville. Until the next "big" shakedown or shakeup UNT will still have to take care of business. Looks like that UNT has put itself in the spotlight on the Men's side of BB and FB.
  3. Four "biggest" wins come to mind. In no particular order: (1) i believe it was 1969 or 1970 against Cincinatti at the "Pit." Cinci was ranked pretty high that year and NT jumped all over the Bearcats and at one point was something like 25 - 5. Joe Hamilton era. (2) that same year Bradley came to the "PIT." At that time ranked high in the top 20. NTSU beat them in double OT. Bradley eventually got beat in the NCAA Tourny by UCLA in the semifinals. (3) Texas at the PIT in the late 80's when NT came back from about 15 points down in the last five minutes to win. (4) 2007 conference championship win agaist Arkansas State.
  4. Congratulations for #23 BB Jones and Team.
  5. #23 tonight and an invitation to the "DANCE." Congrats to BB Jones and the team.
  6. Tonight's box score: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=270640249
  7. Basketball Jones has the team peaking at the right time. The team is PUMPED. UNT wins tomorrow night. For all of you who are still critical of "our" team or "our" coach then IMHO there is another local board where you can make your negitive posts. I am really excited about this victory and refuse to listen to "trite" posts that still critisize the UNT BB team and the coach. Everyone else should share in the enthusiasm of what is happening. Congrats to BB Jones and the team for another win..........#22. Tuesday night........#23.
  8. UNT goes to the "BIG DANCE."
  9. I repeat the quote of Sturns in today's FWST, "Our attitude is that we're here and we're not leaving......winning one was great, but we're looking forward to winning the next three." (now two)..... That is the attitude and enthusiasim of the team. 21 wins 22 wins Monday night.
  10. UNTFlyer- Dude, you can not be serious!!! Seriously, sometimes I lay awake and worry about all the carbon emmissions in the atmosphere from gas vehicles and coal fired generating plants in the United States and China!! Three years ago I cut off TXU as a provider because, and I mean because, I installed three solar panels on the roof of my home on my beautiful one acre homesite. About nine months ago I completed rigging up five decorative electric generating windmills so that I have no need for commercial electricity. I generate enough through "natural methods" that I actually have sold enough back to the electric company that in six years I will be able to pay my mortgage off. I point to a study that I read, about six-months ago, from MIT concerning the environment. Surprisingly the months of August through January are one of the worst for the destruction of the ozone. I only mention this because emissions from coal and gas from High School, College and Professional football tailgating parties ranks as the #7 destroyer of the environment behind coal producing plants and vehicular emmissions (cars, SUV's, busses, trains, aircraft and boats). In Gore's award winning documentary "THE TRUTH" if we as a university do not do anything in our lives other than convice other college groups to STOP tailgating we can "REDUCE" these carbon emmissions, from tailgating, another 10%.....taken from the MIT study. This may be enough to keep enough ice caps melting and help reduce the increasingly hotter climate which is now responsible for all the tornadoes and ice storms in the upper midwest along with the destruction of our planet. The alternative is "SOLENT GREEN."
  11. "Our attitude is that we're here and we're not leaving.....winning one was great, but we're looking forward to winning the next three." yeaaaaaa babeeeeeee........that is the attitude.
  12. Coach Jones has the talent and IMHO has the team "peaking" with enthusiasm and confidence at the right momement to win the SBC tournament.
  13. NT80- You think that an OOC schedule of Oklahoma, Arkansas, SMU and Navy is lower tier D1A???? Even if you add WKU (D-1AA), which is moving to the SBC, it is still a great schedule in my book and "not" a lower tier D-1A schedule as you say.
  14. excellent schedule with a good mix of OOC opponents. these are the type of schedules unt should be playing annually.
  15. Coach JJ is one of the better coaches that UNT has had since the mid-1960's. These include coaches: Spika, Blakely and Jankovich. The SBC, since its inception, has not been known as a power BB conference like some of the larger BCS affiliated conferences and some smaller college conferences that produce teams like Southern Illinois or Wichita State, out of the MVC or other smaller college power schools such as Gonzaga, Winthrop or Princeton. There are other "similar type teams" but these "type" teams have a propensity to defeat, on a regular basis, top 50 teams and teams that are in the "Top-20." Conferences like the SBC has not developed that reputation, yet. The SBC is still a "body bag" conference for BB as it is for FB. The SBC still has an Albatross around its neck and until one or two conference schools begin to distinguish themselves in FB and BB that Albatross will forever hang as the SBC's "Red Badge of Honor".... or dishonor. The SBC is a confernce of "parity" plain and simple, period. No SBC conference winner has ever won a game in the "Big Dance." For the SBC to exceed in BB there has to be one or two "break out" schools that start to defeat some of the "power 50" schools on a regular basis then start "snake bitting" some of the top 25. Until then the SBC will be a "one team selection conference" to the "big dance." This year the SBC may have a chance to place a team or two in the NIT. This would be great recognition if those teams won a game or two or three or four. Some of you will point to a couple of teams in the SLC such as SHSU and Corpus Christi. The scheduled teams they play are not that impressive except with a couple of exceptions. When these these teams play a school in the top 50 or 60 they get the "crap" beat out of them. You see the SLC is another parity conference like the SBC. Some of you point to some of the teams that we have played this year and complain. How much complaining would most of you do if we played, this year, Prairie View A&M, Lamar, St. Louis, Idaho State, Pacific, Fordham, Jacksonville State and Grambling State????? Ohhhhhhh.......wait a minute those were the teams that #7 Texas A & M played this year. Nobody in complaining in College Station. Every BB team in the nation like to have "body bag" games to get the team ready for the regular season including Coach J. Coach Trilli once made a statement on how one can judge the improvement of your team and I paraphrase. You go from getting beat by double digits to single digits. Then loosing some of the close ones then go to winning the close ones to winning in the single digits to the double digits. I have seen this trend with the teams over the last couple of years. For those of you who pay attention to what the players are saying about the team and Coach J it is "VERY POSITIVE." Coach J won 19 regular season games this year and by what is being said by the team, this year, UNT will either meet or exceed 19 next year. The members of this years BB team have expressed more confidence in their team and in Coach JJ than ever before!!! This IMHO is a "POSITIVE" indication that JJ has turned the corner and is about ready, as Bum Phillips once said, "kick the F****** door down." (that Bum Phillips statement is for those old enough to remember the rivalry between the Oilers/Steelers). For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about have PMG explain it in one of his epistles. I, for one, am glad that JJ is here at UNT and by what Coach Blakely said after being an honorary coach stated that he hopes and prays that JJ stays at UNT. I only hope that the administration (RV/Dr. see these positive attributes of JJ and the situation that UNT is in just by being in a "parity conference."
  16. Coach Blakely is 100% in his observation of Coach Jones.
  17. SBC is now 4-3 against CUSA in BB this year. The SBC edged CUSA in FB, last year, and BB this year. Seriously, we may want to reconsider changing conferences! just a thought.
  18. Bottom line is that nobody knows what "really" happened in this situation concerning if Coach Dodge or staff contacted the player or not and what was said. All we know is one person's take on the situation in Abilene, Texas. All we know is that the kid still gets an athletic scholarship (free ride) to another university. Heck, West Texas A&M has a great football team and they get to compete for the national title every year in their playoff system. This is Coach Dodge's program and let him run it the way he so chooses including the signing of players that he wants. As an old preacher once said, "There is nothing you can do to change the past but you can start today to make a new tomorrow." (which is a good lesson for all involved)

  20. OOOOOPS......got my sports mixed up........
  21. I was listening to KTCU (88.7 FM) this afternoon and their press conference with Coach P. After the run down on the recruits the sports writers and the individual from Rivals.com gave some objective comments on SMU and UNT. Concerning UNT they were impressed with Coach Dodge's ability to recruit all over Texas and his raport with many H.S. coaches in the state. They believed UNT picked up an "excellent" recruiting class this year and see the trend continuing for the next several years, if he stays. Concerning his son at SLC they stated that they do not know if he would attend UNT but no one knows for sure at this time. If Riley were to get recruited by another program he may not play quarterback because he is such an athlete. He may end up as a safety. When TCU's Coach Peterson was discussing his class and recruits he called them "Paper Tigers" because he does not know what he has until they play. He stated in his system he can convert running backs to linemen like he has done in the past with his current program. He said many of today's high school players have played multiple positions and because they were a running back or defensive back in high school that does not necesitate were they are going to play in his system. Peterson also talked about getting "sleepers." For example he said L.T. (who plays for San Diego) was only offered one D-1 scholarship. Anyway, to make a long story short the local media including Rivals.com believed UNT has an excellent recruiting class this year.
  22. i remember watching NTSU, the step-child of the MVC, in 1967 - at the OLD PIT - defeating Texas A&M, the defending SWC BB champions. Amazingly, NTSU got beat by the U of H, with Elvin Hayes, by 2 in the Hawaii Classic. If ya'll dont remember U of H defeated a favored Lew Alcinder UCLA team that same season. Lew became Karrim Abdul Jabar or Abdul Karrim Jabar. After the U of H loss by 2 we all knew that NTSU would win the MVC. I think we came in the middle of the pack. However the next two years NTSU only lost one home game, to Louisville. That is when you had to get to the PIT early to get a seat and the place would absolutely "rock" with noise. People would scream, throw rubber snakes on the floor and stomp on the bleachers.
  23. UNT is now 16-7 with six games remaining. IMHO JJ has the team peaking at the right time for the SBC tournament. To me, it looks like JJ runs the table for the remaining six games with a season ending 22-7 record going into the tournament.
  24. Fact is over the last 40 years or so NTSU/UNT has not been BB friendly on attendance. Except for a brief period of time when Spika (sp) was filling the old PIT and Blakley was bringing in very repectable crowds to the new PIT on those 20+ winning teams. Face it.....to call for the firing of a coach because attendance was 1300 is crazy along with the team being 14-7. JJ is an excellent coach. Perhaps all of you who want to fire JJ because of attendance are the problem?? Perhaps yall should set up a committee and bring the fans in......instead of what you are blogging about. And for those who think we could easily be 7-14 conversley we could be undefeated if you want to play the "WHAT IF GAME."
  25. NT80-- you have a warped perspective on UNT BB. 1. UNT is 14-7 and could easily be 18-3 due to four loses by a total of 8 points. 2. Why dont you add up all of the UNT BB attendance and get a better perspective on average attendance. 3. The season is not over yet and UNT will be playing in the tournament. I have been watching NTSU/UNT sports before you were an embryo and IMHO there have been four really good BB coaches in Denton. 1. Spicka (sp) 2. Blackely (sp) 3. Jankovich 4. Jones Spicka and Blackely had some great attendance figures but other than that attendance has remained about the same for all the other BB coaches. NT80, get some perspective and research your topic better and come up with something more substantial than fire JJ because he cant coach and only 1300 in attendance at the last game......your point is moot and trite. However, I do respect your opinion but dont agree with it.
