  1. OldTimer- You hit the nail on the head and evidently we have the same perspective about the defensive corners and safeties. You are correct again in your perspective about the suspension of some of the defense. Some of it "may" have been personality conflicts with Coach Mendoza, some of it may had been the poor performance of the players and who knows what else that "only" the coaches & players know but will not disclose. Special teams did, in fact, fail in some of the games. Golly, when was the last time we saw two punts blocked (FAU game) near our endzone that led to two touchdowns.....other than that the Coach Mendoza defense played very well ...... we could have won that game. Interceptions by both quarterbacks, Meager and Vizza......OldTimer, when was the last time you saw that many interceptions in one year since you have been attending games??? for me this was a record number going back to the last year that Coach Otis Mitchell was at the helm. But, given that Meager was transitioning from a run oriented offense to a pass oriented offense it may have been difficult and Vizza, 18 years old, transitioning from high school to college where the pace of the game is increased may have accounted for the "abnormal amount of INT's. Back in the day college teams had a Freshman team to get them ready for their sophmore year when they were really eligible to play college ball. I believe in 1966 or 1967 NTSU beat Oklahoma's freshman team and everyone who paid attention to NTSU football was really pretty excited about the new players. It is my further observation that some of the members who post who have seen games for 20+ years usually have a better concept of patients and the need for rebuilding & what it takes than some of the members who have watched UNT football for just a few years. This attitude of, "I want it now at any expense" only indicates the immaturity of the younger posters and not the general feeling of the majority. It is also my observation that Coach Todd Dodge has some of the highest accolades amongst all his peers in the nation. If, as some of the younger posters alude, UNT is so bad defensively why would anyone come to UNT?? The answer is Todd Dodge. Why did Vizza come to UNT?? answer: Todd Dodge. The same with our freshman running back and receivers.....Todd Dodge. Why are we getting more commitments from top players this year than any other year??? answer: Todd Dodge. Todd Dodge and ALL his staff have been beating the bushes for the best players to commit to UNT and now they want to be part of the rebuilding process and one recent high school qb who is going to play on defense........yep, that is Coach Mendoza's defense......Todd Dodge. Offense, Defense and Special teams have to take their fair share of responsibility .... not just one piece of the pie takes 100% of the blame. This knee jerk reaction from the "lynch mob" is just from a small handfull of younger posters, with no starting point for a reference from the past (say 5 years) and in my humble opinion DO NOT represent the vast majority views of this university, staff and those who support 100% what it actually takes to rebuild a program. It is NOT the "tail" that wags this dog rather it is this dog that wags the tail. Hopefully, anonymous readers will be able to discern the difference between the minoriy views of the "lynch mob" and the the vast majority who 100% support Todd Dodge! thanks OT.
  2. OldTimer--- EXCELLENT POST AND INSIGHT. UNTphd: the team did not give up. GrandGreen: you are clueless if you can see the future. MG61: if we ran Dickey Ball our "d" would have probably be ranked above 80 (or whatever) but we would still be 2-10. would you rather be 2-10 with the 119th "D" in the country or 2-10 with the 60th best "D" in the country?? dude, 2-10 is 2-10 no matter how you slice it. Imissbooger: Hurt recruiting???? IMB, have you read the paper lately or looked at scouts dot com or some of the other recruiting rags on who Coach Dodge and the staff are bringing in??? To me who TD is bringing in this early is a VIRTUAL PLETHORA and CORNICOPIA OF TALENT!!! and....imho....much better than what Coach Dickey recruited.....and.....imho, again, it will only get better. Lifer: as much as i agree with you most of the time i have to disagree with you now........Special Teams, Interceptions and Poor Defensive Back play lost more games for us this year.....not Coach Mendoza.....like i said before we could have beat SMU if it were not for the interceptions (one back for a td), we could have beat fau if it were not for the 2 blocked punts near our endzone.....that was 14 points for fau in a 30-20 loss for us......fiu....well, 2 more INT's, one run back for a td, our db's allowing receivers to get behind them again and losing them in the endzone......the schemes are right we just dont have the horses. rcade: would you rather be 2-10 under Coach Dickey or 2-10 under Coach Dodge????? I trust the enthusiasm of TD and is, at least, 10 or 20 times the recruiter than Coach Dickey. I truely think that Coach Dickey produced 100% of his talent in endeavoring what he could accomplish at UNT but I would rather have 100% of Coach Dodge's talent anyday.....rcade, double the strength of your coffee. vvz28........good post dude shopmg.....good post dude filmerj.......good post dude bryan316...good post dude GMG1999: show me one opposition message board that does not disrespect the opposition!! STE: UNT is not UT or OU.....coach mendoza's schemes dont appeared to be flawed as much as the lethargic nature of our DB's. These guys are slow. you can have the best schemes but if you dont have the horses then ..... well you know 2-10. You also have to give some credit to our "special teams" and the amount of INT's that were thrown this year by both of our qb's putting more pressure on our defense. You just want to lump all the failure on one person which does not make sense......spread the love around dude......give some to the offense and special teams. jjpfootball: (LYNCH MOB MEMBER) : read my above posts newbie....also, evidently the freshmen were probably playing better than the vets. Hummmmmm, that tells me that this new recruiting talent that TD has brought in may be better than what was here????? hummmmmmm, there is a new concept. got5onit: EXCELLENT REBUTAL TO jjpfootball.....friggin' newbie....just probably reads about us in the paper....or junior schoolastic magazine. ncmg: i rarely disagree with your posts but disagree with you here. IMHO, TD has recruited much better than DD, so far....rarely did we recuit anyone in the texas 100 or area 50 under coach dickey......TD only had about 17 recruiting days for this year's class and look what he got. look what he has recrutied for next year....wow.!!! evidently texas hs football coaches and players know who TD is and are willing to be a part of the rebuilding process based upon his reputation......heck fire....that is a compliment to the man and encouraging to me. hickhouse: either the full responsibility falls on TD alone or none of it......and .......TD says RM STAYS!!....You just cant put in disclaimers.
  3. flyeater..... ????? you say the game is winnable.....presumably by the offense but you are blaming the defense......????? mendoza is satan???? dude, stop smokin' the wacky tobacky......even a junior high student would not make such a stupid comment.
  4. "lynch mob"- you can not blame coach mendoza on all the INT's that young freshman qb vizza threw....i do like vizza and he is going to be a great qb for nt....but heck he is a true freshman....18 year old kid.... you cant blame coach mendoza on the TD runback on the kickoff...... you cant blame coach mendoza on the fumbled punt return that set up an easy TD...... you cant blame coach mendoza when our db lost sight of the fiu receiver in the endzone....td......that was our db's fault. you cant blame coach mendoza when our lethargically slow db let the fiu reciever get behind him again for another TD. like i have been saying just about all year......we have a good offensive line but really bad defensive backs......and.......that is where just about all the teams we have played have been attacking us. special teams has to carry some of the blame for this loss. our offense has to carry some of the blame for this loss with all the int's that were thrown giving fiu more opportunities to score and "less" opportunities for us to score. face it.....when we played dickey ball for all those years we probably did not throw as many INT's as we have this year.....dickey ball was ..... run....run.....runnnnnnn........draw play......"ball control".......very little room to make mistakes........and you know what there is nothing wrong with that style of play. face it.....we now play the "spead eagle" (i really like that term and forgot the gmg member who coined that phrase)...throw throw throw.....run......i dont know who coined the phrase that, "when you throw the ball three things can happen and two of 'em aint good." the last time i was a brain surgeon i operated on a frog in biology class but i do know that more points are going to be scored transitioning from a run based offense to a passed based offense.....by both teams. you "lynch mob" members are just going to have to be a bit more patient with our coaching staff and not look at the box scores and the stats.....there is more to a game than the final score......like......play of the specal team.......play of the offense......and as Jimmy the Greek said, " THE INTANGIBLES".....OK for you younger memembers go to "google search" or whatever seach engine you use to see who this guy was. IMHO, coach mendoza along with coach TD came into a pretty horrific situation here at UNT.....give both these men along with the rest of the coaching staff, current and future players a chance to turn it around next year.....heck it may take two or three years for a program like UNT to become established. just be patient.......this aint a situation like burger king where you can drive in and out with a burger......this is kinda like going into some restaurant and ordering a burger that cost more than 99 cents....you just have to have the patience to wait.
  5. greenminer- dude, you can't be serious?? i have been watching games at fouts since 1966 the last year of otis michell (that man had class). how long have you been watching games gm?? since maybe 2001?? i dont know what coach mendoza has taught the defense and evidently neither do you but coach mendoza probably knows more about football than both of us put together. gm, you tell me how many spots our defense has dropped.....!!! all i said (and you can read my post again) was that i would have more concern IF unt's defense was ranked in the top 50 and dropped somewhere between 100-119. come on gm, in the last three years how many times has unt been ranked above 100?? ok, so we returned 10 starters......those 10 starters won 2 games last year. man, if you call that the strength of our team you must have stopped along the side of the road to graze on some wild mushrooms this morning. gm, what kind of offense did we run last year? dickey ball....run....run....draw play.......run.....run.....draw play. well guess what.....you can't throw too many interceptions with that type of lethargic offense and the final scores are lower......TD can move the ball faster down the field than DD ever did. did you pat coach mendoza on the back after the troy game...defense caused 7 turnovers.....naw, ya just wanted mendoza fired. did you pat coach mendoza on the back after the fau game....defense played very well....special teams played terrible....naw, ya just wanted mendoza fired. did you pat coach mendoza after our first win against lamo.....of course not....we won. gm, i take it that you have absolutely no point of reference to the past....and that is ok......i can sorta respect your knee jerk reaction along with some of the other "lynch mob" who are like you, sort of, with no point of reference past maybe 1995. Ya'll only know dickey ball and playstation/x-box. be patient with coach mendoza and coach dodge along with the remainder of the staff.....these are good men who took over a bad program both on offense and defense and we should be grateful that they accepted to take this position. Usually UNT has been almost the final resting place for any coach that came through here.......with the exception of coach fry who took most all the ntsu staff with him to iowa. gm, you may not agree with me and i may not agree with you.....that's life....i respect your opionion.....i may not agree with it but do respect it.
  6. sounds like coach mendoza inherited kids that were a step or two too slow. if unt's defense was that good or our offense prior to TD's arrival why was unt in the lower tier of 119 d-1 teams?? *********** coach mendoza is, IMHO, doing the best with what he has to work with....you can not put an extra step into someone's speed where there is no step. it appear to me from what i have seen is that our "D" plays soft and still gets beat deep.....and.....when the opponents catch the ball they are 5-10 yards past our defensive personnel.......that is the fault of the player's ability and not coach mendoza's ability to coach. IF coach mendoza inherited one of the top 25 or 50 defenses in the nation and brought us to somewhere between 100-119 i would have more concern. give the man a break....he got dealt a bad hand but we have all seen improvement throughout the year. as far as the NAVY game......wow......win or lose that was one of the most exciting games i have seen at fouts field..... our defense will be much much better next season with the returning freshmen and the other redshirts......
  7. SE- I saw the Navy game and personally, Navy made a lot of other college defenses look bad this year. Navy just has a "jet octane" offense. The Navy game aside, UNT was in most of the games we played if it were not for "special team" play, both our QB's throwing INT's with the other team running them back for TD's or long run backs or throwing INT's in our endzone. Come on SE, there are other factors why the scores were why they were: 1. offensive mistakes 2. special team mistakes 3. defensive mistakes can you blame Coach Mendoza for the two blocked punts in the FAU game that lost us the game?? can you blame Coach Mendoza for the INT's and blocked punt in the MTSU game?? can you blame Coach Mendoza for the INT's and runbacks for TD in the SMU game?? face it the defensive players UNT have are really not that good compared to other programs......7 wins in 3 years---come on. but......... the good news is that help is on its way with the recruits that all our coaching staff have recruited and the ones on the way. Be patient SE, I do not really think any coach could have turned around our defense this year.....living or dead.
  8. SE-- --I hope you are not part of the "lynch mob" who wants Coach Mendoza fired. --14 of WKU's points were from freshman Vizza's INT's (one for a short field TD and another runback). --UNT could have won the FAU game if it were not for two blocked punts by OUR endzone that led to 14 FAU points. --Personally, Coach Mendoza is doing a fantastic job with what he has to work with. UNT has ONLY won 7 games in 3 years. Certainly that number has to turn on some lights in someone's head. Special Teams, Offense and Defense (as a team) has to take "equal" blame because football is a team sport and not just a "defensive" sport. --Some of you "lynch mob" members will have to go back through all the games and figure out how many points the opposition made off our offensive/special team miscues instead of just looking at the "bottom box score line." --This year has been exciting watching all our freshmen play. Why are all these freshmen playing?? Wellllllllll, I guess they are playing better than our veterans. Since the coaching staff makes that decission then they are the ones who know BEST who the BEST is and currently it appears that some of our freshmen players, recruited by Coach Dodge, et.al., play better than what was here the previous years. To me that is encouraging.

Man I miss the gateway, where men are men that don't where skirts in their off time? Football: Pre-game taunting leads to postgame scuffle 12:13 AM CST on Sunday, November 25, 2007 By Jeff Andrews / Staff Writer Even though North Texas has played them just once in school history, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers may already be one of the Mean Green’s biggest rivals. After pre-game taunting and excessive celebrations on the Mean Green’s senior day culminated in a scuffle at midfield after the game, the Hilltoppers drew the ire of North Texas players on both sides of the ball. “What they did at the beginning of the game with all their antics, disrespect and jumping around on our field, it [winning] was bound to happen,” said defensive lineman Montey Stevenson. But as much as North Texas felt disrespected by Western Kentucky’s behavior, it played a role in the Mean Green escaping with a 27-26 win. Aside from giving North Texas a little extra motivation, two excessive celebration penalties led to a crucial missed extra point by the Hilltoppers. In the second quarter, Western Kentucky defensive lineman Terald Clark intercepted Mean Green quarterback Giovanni Vizza at the line of scrimmage and rumbled 44 yards for a touchdown, putting the Hilltoppers up 20-7. But after the score, a WKU defensive back was flagged after jumping around in the end zone, and then multiple Hilltoppers gathered in a circle and did “the bomb,” where a player pretends to throw a bomb in the air and they all fall down when it “lands.” “The bomb in the end zone -- major disrespect,” said running back Jamario Thomas. “That made me mad and it takes a lot to make me mad. That really made me mad -- them doing that after one of their touchdowns.” Western Kentucky was penalized 15 yards on the extra point attempt, which kicker Chris James missed. The Hilltoppers ended up losing by one point. “There were some things in the pre-game warm up, and things like that motivated our players,” said Mean Green head coach Todd Dodge. “Their touchdown celebration, it was probably a show of disrespect. I don’t think [Western Kentucky head coach] David [Elson] approves of that, but it ended up getting them beat in the end.” The Hilltoppers got under the Mean Green’s skin before the game even started. Players gathered at the 50-yard line and jumped around with their helmets in the air, talking plenty of trash along the way. “They were jumping around on our 50 while we were trying to do our pre-game,” Stevenson said. “They had their helmets in the air, spinning towels, jumping around and having a few choice words. It was ridiculous.” Following the game, Mean Green players rushed the field after an exhilarating victory. Western Kentucky didn’t like it, and a fight took place at midfield for minutes after the game concluded. Both teams surrounded the fight before officials separated the culprits. Most didn’t see what exactly happened or what started the fight. “I don’t even know what happened,” Thomas said. “I was actually on the bench with the drill team.” ********************************* J.T., If I could have been on the bench with the drill team warming my old bones I would have stayed for the second half. ********************************* Posted: Sun Nov 25, 2007 2:35 pm Bigjeep Joined: 15 Jul 2005 Posts: 4230 Location: 35 1/2 minutes from Diddle...30 from Chuck`s... does seem a bit high schoolish...the celebrating I mean... _________________ bigjeep

  19. H-Towngreen- lol, you must have been asleep in english class when the professor was telling the class not to end a sentence with a preposition. just remember this story: An aggie was walking across the Yale campus the first day of graduate school and asked a student, "Hey buddy where is the library at?" The Yale student said, "Yale men do not end sentances with prepositions." The aggie said, "Ok buddy, where is the library at, asshole?"
  20. chrisfisher- no, i was not speaking directly to you on the comment that "our bench is deep." This was just an educated observation but I am glad that you and others have recognized that Basketball Jones has such a talented group of men starting and on the bench. best regards.
  21. chrisfisher- funny that you mention that because one of the three refs was calling about 75% of the fouls. the refs were even calling "palming the ball" which i have not seen called in decades. you should have seen the look on the player's faces when palming the ball was called. Basketball Jones has a team that knows how to seal the deal and knows what it is like to win......going back from last season. This has got to be the deepest team that i have seen in 40 years, without a doubt. IMHO, this team is much better than last year's team. If you have not seen Basketball Jones' team this year you better...... Somehow NT just needs to get the students to the game. The Okie State game was huge! and a win over any Mo Valley school is huge because the Mo Valley usually puts about two or three schools in the NCAA's every year......it is a tough conference.

  24. untbowler- how much of the blame do you put on the player's and coaches?? in the last 3 years UNT has only won 6 games. some, the coaches fault.....but......UNT does not have a decent defensive team. heck they droped two possible interceptions in the last drive and missed tackles. face it.....UNT needs to recruit better defensive players.
  25. this same defense was on a team that ONLY won TWO games last year. How good can they really be? the blame for our loses have to ALSO be placed on the offense and special teams. you can't blame Coach Mendoza for everything. our "D" players are just sub standard. NT just needs better players who are faster and can tackle. period.
