  1. Wind-assisted. I bet things even out once we factor in bench reps, though.
  2. If Gene Hackman could play a game with four guys and still win a championship, why can't Tony Benford? You can't argue with results, people.
  3. This is why its sporks only in a well run homeschool cafeteria.
  4. 9 a.m.! Yawn! Lots of folks 12 hours ago thought this would be a good game. Didn't work out. Old news. Nothing of substance.
  5. Here's the point, as I understood it: UCONN landed a guy who never visited their campus, and he's worked out well for them. If the no-visit signing is good enough for Kevin Ollie, then Benford can do it, too. If I missed it... Please state the point for me in one sentence. Hell, make it two if you need to. Though, it can be fun to take one tiny, tortured similarity between wildly different basketball situations and imply obvious conclusions. Watch how I do it: Todd Eaglin is a JUCO player who played two years of basketball for a team in NJCAA Region XIV. He'll be a Junior next year playing D1 basketball for a Texas school, and he has a teammate who will also be a Junior that transferred from a different D1 school. Am I saying absolutely and unequivocally that Todd Eaglin is another Carlton Dotson, and that he's definitely going to murder Maurice Aniefiok? Not comparing criminality at all, but if your criteria "must" is a very, very slight overlap in circumstances to imply sweeping conclusions, we better think about firing that idiot coach we have.
  6. An excellent question... We did not. HOWEVER! We did land two guys from the backcourt of Tyler JC, which went 14-14 overall and 7-12 in conference. So... Get fired up! One of our guys is in this video: http://youtu.be/bhoah2OGltM#t NOTE: We did not get the guy dunking from the free throw line. We got the guy jogging backwards with a face full of balls, then falling down.
  7. Justin Jackson out of Houston is the 10th ranked high school player in the class of 2014, according to Rivals (just like Deandre Daniels was!). 5 star talent, committed to North Carolina. If he decided to come to North Texas, I'd be thrilled, whether he made a campus visit or not. Any coach that wouldn't take an LOI until after he hit campus would be an idiot. I am substantially less excited about a sub-6' JUCO guard with zero D1 offers two weeks before late signing period. Also... I didn't see the word "must" in anything CBL posted in this thread. If he said it was an absolute necessity, then I suppose I have, quite literally, completely missed his point.
  8. I'm glad at least one of these long-suffering fan bases will finally get to win another championship.
  9. You're joking, but the reality is that the transformative power of F1 will (as it often has) drive innovation and evolution in performance car technology. Started with KERS and engine restrictions, and it's obviously in their future: http://www.forbes.com/sites/mikescott/2014/03/13/formula-1-feels-the-need-for-fuel-efficiency/ And, this year, FIA launched Formula E: http://www.fiaformulae.com/ All electric, they pull 140 on a road course, and this is only the first year.
  10. When you promote from within (wisely) off of a successful staff, there's no turnover, no rebuilding, no adapting to the culture, no "his guys", etc. A guy may just flat out not be head coach material. But when you're hiring someone you already know and who already knows and succeeds at your institution, that's pretty much the only question you need to answer.
  11. Soccer is a woman sport. Suck on that, pele. Shoulda never let go of Xuxa.
  12. Wow... What was even in his binder? Ants on a log and a Capri Sun?
  13. The next national news article (assuming we don't get cracked for anything illegal) about Tony Benford will be a 4 paragraph wire blurb carried on all the major sports sites. Paragraph one will be one or two sentences, stating that 'University of North Texas Head Coach Tony Benford has been fired/terminated/relieved of duty', either 'after _ seasons' or '_ games into his _th season'. Paragraph two will summarize the most recent season or portion-of-a-season, specifying the overall record, conference record, and any notably terrible losses or lengthy losing streaks from his final stretch of games. Paragraph three will state his career record at North Texas, and specify how much time remained on his contract at the time of the firing. If Vito breaks the story and the wire services borrow from his report, it might also specify how much money his buyout is expected to cost. Paragraph four will briefly recap his assistant coaching career prior to North Texas, and also probably mention the win over Texas A&M as the high point of his tenure here. I can't wait to read it when it finally comes out!
  14. Hey, the Idaho JUCO pipeline slammed shut after things went sour with Casimiro. Gotta salute the staff for making desolate, rural lemonade here. Hooray for the Equality State!
  15. I wish him nothing but the best. The guy has a degree, which is great, and he has height, which could actually get him tryouts to play for money somewhere in the world. I hope he succeeds. I just think you're an idiot. Most recently, for speculating that Euro scouts were chasing him down after a season where he scored one basket in 3 games and 3 baskets in one other. One of two things happened here: Either Gaines decided he didn't want to play for Benford any more (it's happened before!) or Benford was going to push him out of his scholarship (it's happened before!) and rather than go to a D2 or NAIA school to play one more year, Gaines is just moving on with his life. He's already used a redshirt year and he already has a college degree. No sense wasting a year of his life at Cape Girardeau College for a year just to cling to basketball.
  16. Obviously. I mean, he blew up for 6 and 4 against FAU. Were there any international scouts at that game?
  17. More on Pasternack. Great article from the transition period at UNO between seasons: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1173628/index.htm That guy deserves all the success in the world. Glad he's landed somewhere like Arizona.
  18. Verbal to Kentucky (as a middle schooler? Freshman in H.S?) while Billy Gillespie was still there. Signed with LSU out of high school, but didn't pass the clearinghouse due to his high school grade mill (God's Academy). Signed with FIU and tried to go there under Isiah with a redshirt year (like Tony Mitchell) to get eligible. Didn't work out for some reason. Went to UNO as a non-scholarship player (this is during their transition out of D1 basketball, when no new scholarships were being issued). Played a semester there for Joe Pasternack, the anti-Buzz, and a guy I'd love to have here if he hadn't lifted himself likely beyond our reach (he's now the lead assistant at Arizona). After UNO, he was eligible to go anywhere. Wound up at New Mexico State for two years. Now, he's graduating (good for him!) and he'll be joining his third team as an active player, and potentially the sixth different program he's committing to play for in his college career.
  19. Remember that 6 point, 4 rebound domination against FAU? Remember the 44 personal fouls against 41 combined points + rebounds in 2013-14? His time with North Texas was brief, but he'll always have the memories. And a suitcase full of t-shirts that Scott Monarch gave him. The real question here is, how are we going to replace the production? He had that one assist in the La Tech game... Who is going to distribute for Jordan now?
  20. Welcome to North Texas, Todd.
