  1. It's a little bit tortured, but I laughed a bit. If we're going to get that stretched, I'll go ahead praise one of the most influential rock bands of all time: The Who (the hell took an honest accounting of the basketball program from 2012-14 and decided we'd be well served to keep Tony Benford on as head coach? I mean, REALLY? We're going to pretend like we're serious about succeeding as an institution of learning OR as an athletics program, when we're not even willing to take honest stock of the real state of affairs of our basketball program? When U-A-freaking-B can afford to eat a few years of contract on a proven winner, we can't bring ourselves to swallow hard, open the checkbook, and save the program from a multi-year rebuilding effort that we'll be in for after this round of recruiting and an almost inevitable termination within the next 6-18 months anyway? ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM can afford to cut loose Mike Davis, but we won't end this catastrophe until the hole we dig for the next coach reaches halfway to China? I mean, if you want to talk about containment of a terminal infection... I'd rather take my chances tongue-washing the corpse of Thomas Eric Duncan than see what happens to UNT basketball for the next half decade or more when Tony Freaking Benford goes through ANOTHER year of churning through replacements for 4 or more scholarship athletes. The last chance we had to pull the ejection seat and survive was back in March/April, but now we're riding Goose while Benford goes full throttle right into the side of the mountain, and we have no one to blame but ourselves for the inevitable wreckage.) Sure, some people say they've sold out with all the commercials and TV theme songs, but you can't deny their influence. Where would pinball be today without them?
  2. I think you mean Woody Wilson Matt Phillips. And I assumed you'd be more of an Andrew Smiths fan.
  3. I think you're thinking of Steve Kragthorpe. They were both rumored names at the time of the McCarney hire, that's why I think you're mixing the stories together in your memory.
  4. Riddle me this, Wes Studi... Why am I wearing the watermelon on my feet?
  5. Don't forget the dead QB, the academically ineligible QB, and the injured freshman QB that largely caused the first season collapse, and the heart attack (fired 4 weeks later!) during the other losing half-season!
  6. I question your interpretation of his comments. Based on my MGRN analysis, Fake Lonnie plans on adopting a dog. Adopting a big dog.
  7. I don't like where this is headed... Maybe we need to get us some of that re-form, too. Just remember that I'm a friend to the farmer, please.
  8. If he decides to go out like the Chief, I just hope Mac fluffs Benford's pillow for him before escaping.
  9. Lessons learned: appreciate things in the moment. And for your own edification, don't discriminate. Six rulers or not.
  10. "Okay, gentlemen... When the music starts, just walk in a circle. When it stops, everyone who can grab a chair gets to keep their scholarship."
  11. I laughed so damn hard at this... I'd kiss you, but I think you may have already intentionally infected yourself.
  12. This is much less disturbing than their last halftime Oz tribute, which featured Adebisi dotting the "i" in a most family-unfriendly way.
  13. If I had a badge, I'd shoot you in the face right now.
  14. Sorry to respond so quick... If you're not 100% sure on Kassell, I can honestly say that I'm not, either. With the weird timing of Simon's departure in 1998 and the relatively sparse info about recruiting and commitments from that era of football, it's tough to say for sure (at least for me) who came on board for which coach that year. I thought he was out in 2003, which made it clear, but I remembered wrong. Either way, whether he signed on under Dickey or Simon, the point stands that it isn't unprecedented to have this many guys in the league at once. And neither should be an insurmountable bar for future NFL success.
  15. You are correct... Thought he graduated in 2003, but I was wrong. Throw him on the pile with Brian Waters and company for Simon's 4+.
  16. Counting punters, I think Matt Simon had 3 or 4 NFL guys active at the same time, too.
  17. Dodge has 3 simultaneous right now. Dickey had at least four that I can recall back in 2006 Brad Kassell - Jets Cody Spencer - Jets Adrian Awasom - Giants Patrick Cobbs - Steelers & Dolphins All four were active players simultaneously for two NFL seasons If we're counting practice squad and training camp guys, there are a lot of guys who had a Brelan-level exposure to the NFL. Johnny Quinn, Jeremiah Chapman, Booger, Brandon Jackson (also with the Chargers... screw those guys), and I'm sure there are many more I'm forgetting.
  18. Also, just to clarify... There's nothing funny about Ebola. It infects TV people now: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/10/02/nbc-says-cameraman-tested-positive-for-ebola-entire-crew-to-be-flown-home/ Shit just got real.
  19. Not humor... This was meant to be very specifically in response to a notion of nostalgia about a less-anxious or misinformed response to past disease outbreaks.
  20. Meh... Back during the Spanish Flu epidemic, people took coal oil to prevent it. People wore bags of herbs around their neck to protect against polio, and people who had Ryan White as their paperboy cancelled subscriptions because they were afraid they'd catch AIDS from newsprint. At least useful information can get out there now. Anyone complaining about a dumbing down of society doesn't give proper weight to the historical prevalence of ignorance.
  21. You realize that isn't actually true, right? That the foreign-born percentage of the population now is actually lower than it was for all of the late 1800s and early 1900s? And that more than 10% of our foreign-born population post-2000 comes from India and China, largely on H1-B or similar visas (Doctors, computer programmers, etc.)? And, I mean, SURELY you aren't saying that we have more people of African descent entering America now than ever before, right?
