FIU Alumni Assc Prez calls for removal of AD
TheTastyGreek replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I didn't bring up Sandusky. Someone else did (EDIT: SilverEagle did), and in response, you said that even if that had happened here, you didn't think it was the place of the alumni association to criticize or condemn in that situation.- 40 replies

FIU Alumni Assc Prez calls for removal of AD
TheTastyGreek replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Depends on the association and what purpose it intends to serve. If it exists as a cheerleading squad for university leadership... Nope. Never criticize. Penn State's association made two statements that I could find back when the allegations first came out, and neither had anything remotely critical to say about university leadership or their failures in separating Sandusky from the university, even after early legal actions and police investigations into his child rape on campus were known to PSU leadership. But an association that exists to serve alumni, not the university first, can and often does come into direct conflict with the institution. Dartmouth was sued by it's alumni association back in 2007. NJIT had a similar situation around the same time. And Baylor's alumni association dedicated their entire spring issue of the alumni magazine to outlining the history and rationale behind a legal fight with Baylor University. Baylor's alumni association makes a point of maintaining and exercising independence from the university. They are proud of it, and they use their role to maintain and promote alumni engagement. They also proudly act as a collective voice for alums in criticizing university management and decision-making when appropriate, including occasionally pointed, but respectful, criticisms of Sloan and Lilley. My wife's a member, and I can understand why. I have a feeling that if Phil Bennett were to anally rape a series of young boys in the showers at McLane Stadium, and the Baylor president knew about it... Their alumni association wouldn't hesitate to criticize the school for failing to act.- 40 replies

...and that's the slim sliver of hope. If we keep both basketball coaches, I wouldn't want to be our Athletic Director 10 months from now. It's very conceivable we could miss out on a bowl due largely to an awful schedule of my own creation, then roll into Year 4 with two different basketball coaches with multiple 20 loss seasons here. If I'm Rick V. I don't know that I'm comfortable saying "Yep, these are all my guys, and that was my schedule" to a Year 2 University President who may finally be getting some financial flexibility by then. Unless I'm potentially ready to ride off into the sunset myself, retirement or otherwise. Maybe something happens next month, just so that it doesn't all come together in an even uglier way a year from now.

Related to the topic, in that the historical awfulness of performance affects other programs. But... I am pretty fixated on Benford. He's awful. That's how you make a direct statement. Try it sometime!

The thing that really kills me about women's basketball this year is that it effectively saves Benford's job. Right? Be an optimist, and say the women go .500 the rest of the way. I wouldn't take that bet, but call it a best-case. That means a 7-22 finish to the regular season. Unless they win the NCAA tournament, that means 23 losses. And that is pretty optimistic. Worst case, you're looking at 2-28. Put the same optimism on Benford, and we finish the regular season at 14-16. I don't think that's likely (put me down for 12-18), but say it happens. You end the year with a women's coach with somewhere around 23-25 losses, and a men's coach with 17-20. There's no way I can even imagine we're going to buy out TWO coaches in the same season, especially given the accounting mess. So, is there any way that you can fire a men's coach when his women's counterpart is doing even worse in won/lost terms? I can see us standing pat with both coaches, even if they both finish with 20+ losses. I definitely can't see us eating the money we'd owe Petersen if we fired him after this year, and I don't see how we can keep Petersen if we fired Benford. So... Year 4 for everyone?

My mom won't let me go out without supervision, so Shuke-D and CMJ were there, too. We all ate pretzels and had soda pop. Then I slept on an inflatable mattress! It was a fun adventure. Clipboards are off limits so I don't pinch my fingers. I can use scissors, though. As long as they aren't pointy, I mean.

I was just talking about Lyons because he was mentioned in the original quoted post. As far as the past couple decades... If you insist on keeping on original topic (masochist), then my response to a response to a response didn't take it literally (as in, past 20 years). I apologize for that. No excuse. Maybe I'm just slow. Silver lining- nice to have something in common with Josh White! Also, I thought Kenny Lyons was in my freshman speech class and I jsut love basketball haha! and so forth.
