MGB -- UNT adds Notre Dame transfer
TheTastyGreek replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
AWESOME! Fall classes start in 10 days. I can't wait to see who spontaneously decided they didn't want to be here and transfers out of their own free will at the most fortuitous time (for Benford) again. I just hope, for whichever poor bastard's sake, that South Dakota has a scholarship open. -
Skip Holtz think North Texas will be improved
TheTastyGreek replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Lou Holtz? I think you meant: "Schlichhago Bearshh". -
Season 1 was better than I expected, by 2 wins. Season 2 was about what I expected. Season 3 was way better than I expected. Season 4 was a disappointment, no doubt. I think that any coach taking over for a fired guy, you need to take honest stock of where he's starting from and what realistic expectations ought to be. 3 out of 4 years, he's done better than I expected coming out of the Dodge era. I wouldn't have thrown a long extension at him just for one winning season, but I definitely think he deserves to be here. Now, from this year on? I'm not evaluating on the "rebuilding" curve any more. When you're taking over a team with 3 win talent and you win 5 games? That's significant, and I count it as a (qualified) success. But if you've been here long enough to be fielding a team of your own seniors? 5 wins isn't a success, even if you have 3 win talent. Because the talent is on you. This year doesn't look promising. If we have a losing record, we damn sure better be in a bowl next year. And if we're not? Better invest in some asbestos panties, because the heat of your coaching chair better be hot enough to roast buttocks. Assuming you haven't been ejected from it already.

MGB: Full UNT men's basketball schedule
TheTastyGreek replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Unless Benford does something like hit a player or shoot an usher, he's not getting fired midseason. If we were serious about replacing him, we'd have already done it... We're not going to slide in an interim coach midway through a season, especially not in this sport, where you can pretend that there's always hope of a conference tournament run. Even if we're godawful or if Benford pulls a Shanice, he's not getting canned midyear. Hell, we had a coach go after a fan in the stands once (hey, Silver!), and even he didn't get cut loose midyear. And considering how things have gone with lame duck coaches being retained to finish a season, I doubt we'll be trying that experiment again. So, we're not firing Benford until the season is over. Conference tournament runs March 8th - 12th. If you're an optimist, we might be coming home on the 10th instead of the 9th. Inevitably, we'll need to "evaluate" (or, "evaluate", though if we're going to do that, I hope it's at least something more like "evaluate") the future/direction of the program. We'll probably need to discuss things in the office with Coach Benford, we'll probably need to have some conversations with Dr. Smatresk. Can't be too hasty, obviously. And then, about a week later, we'll (hopefully?) fire him, 2 or 3 years later than we should have. I'm guessing the 18th because that's a Friday, and I'm betting RV would probably prefer to minimize it, and Friday releases are the best way to do it. Petersen was 3 days from end of season to gone. Shanice was 12 days. Slinker was 3 days. Average it out, you're looking at about 6 days. That's my guess. 6 days after the end of the conference tournament. I think that around New Year's, maybe we can start a pool? -

If McNulty makes the grade will you step down?

My big regret about this new board software is that we're no longer able to designate a thread as "answered". -
The best UNT schedule is for the baseball team. Less infuriating than the basketball schedule, less contentious than the football schedule. Easiest of all to shrug and ignore. Undefeated, perfectly balanced home and away, no frustrating road paycheck beatdowns from power conference teams. Thanks, baseball team!

Lock the gate, Benford. Sure, we have Ray for the weekend... But history tells us he'll likely run away before Monday morning. And we'll never see him again.- 17 replies

Tina Slinker: Support for new coach wanted
TheTastyGreek replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Wow... It's one thing to grit your teeth and keep things polite through a few interviews right after getting let go. But 7 years later, to write something like that? That Tina Slinker is a pretty classy lady. Very impressed. -
UNT to move ahead with plan to purchase Sack N Save
TheTastyGreek replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Wait... Someone used a quantifiable analysis, showed their work, prefaced it with an admission of their own assumptions and potential fallibility, came to a clear conclusion, presented it respectfully, and didn't curse or rely on terrible analogies to make a dumb rhetorical argument? Are you sure you belong here, sir? Second question- Why only 81 posts in 11 years? Is there someone here you don't like? Because I'll get rid of them. Just whisper a name. -

If Cuban knows anything about analyzing the quality of college basketball play, maybe the Mavericks ought to use him to evaluate and draft talent that can actually contribute. -
MGB breaking news -- UNT set to hire Mitchell

Always? How many times did he stand front row for WBB? Or are you talking about post graduation, when he moved to Arkansas for a few years? Tony, I wouldn't make any attendance promises... You never know when someone is going to schedule a weenie roast.
