Wher Will The Wins Come From ? - Part Two
TheTastyGreek replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Fun story: I dated a girl who was a borderline-obsessed Ed Norton fan. I had never seen that movie, so we watched it at her place. I was not really into it. When the scene pops up where Star Trek finally breaks through to Ed Norton and they have their big cathartic moment... One of the quotes that an emotional Ed Norton shouts at his prison therapist/counselor is "How do you know what's going on inside me?!?" Referencing an earlier scene where a prison guard is obviously complicit in Norton's assault, leaving the shower area when the hostile gang comes in... I said, unaffected by the drama: "The guard probably told him." I thought it was hilarious, taking the dramatic symbolic question and turning it into a vulgar literal joke based on the physical situation. She was not amused. At all. -
Channel 8's Sports Reporter- George Riba

No, those title banners are branded by the general story, not the specific sub-graphic. In this case, the story is "Fighting to Keep His Job" (re: Todd Dodge) and that's how they brand all the graphics in that story. It's probably on top of every graphic in the story; it's not about Riley. It's a hack development that started popping up everywhere within the past 5-10 years. Hated it when I was involved in TV news, still hate it after I left. -

The guy who was his therapist that was on one of the Star Treks? We're going to counsel them and help them come to terms with their feelings? -

Meanwhile... I'm at every basketball game. But does MY phone ever ring? Nooooo.... It's all about how Quoner won't show up and say hello. -
We may not agree on much lately, but we certainly agree on this. You can't have a guy in charge of something if his subordinates aren't accountable to him. If a situation like this ever seems like a viable idea, there's a greater problem at work, and there needs to be a change rather than a bizarre Chutes and Ladders organizational structure that undermines everyone supposedly in authority and makes for a paranoid environment.

Can Anyone Who Listened To The Podcast, Say If There
TheTastyGreek replied to eulessismore's topic in Mean Green Football
It was like listening to an angry Harry Truman/Nikita Khrushchev for 45 minutes. Except instead of pounding on a podium with his shoe, he pounded on UNT Playmaker with some stern words. And instead of "The Buck Stops Here", it was "The Buck Stops Over On Dodge's Desk, Next Year." -
I don't think that's true. It's only true if we don't use the reassignment clause and any other leverage we have to negotiate a lower payout, AND if Dodge declined to take another job coaching as a coordinator or at a high school somewhere that would reduce the buyout. I think that if we fire him next year, we'll likely have to pay the entire balance of his 5th year salary. If we'd fired him this year, I think we'd have been able to get out for slightly more than that, unless Dodge just decided to do whatever job they assigned him for the next two years rather than going somewhere to rebuild his coaching reputation.

Hey, I hear ya. My boss can be a real pain in the ass sometimes, and I hate the other drivers on 635. But do the police have any sympathy when I beat up my girlfriend because of how angry any of those other folks make me? Not so far, they don't.

And no timeouts. And the last time we converted an onside or trick kick was back in the 1st quarter of the Navy game in 2007, off a kick by Truman Spencer almost 750 days before.

That wasn't an indictment of the recruits. Follow along as I read aloud: Some people are concerned about how we're going to do in landing recruits this year. They point to SMU's early commits and heavy 3 star talent compared to our three 2-stars and one soft 3-star. Oldtimer vaguely remembers an article that says we had a higher recruiting score than SMU and TCU two years ago. This is supposed to be comforting. But our "higher score" was against a team that only brought in 15 guys and a team that had barely a month for their coach to move from Hawaii and still land his recruiting class. And that "higher score" depended in large part upon two 3-star guys who never made it to campus and another 3 star guy who only chose us because his father is the coach (this is not a repeatable recruiting strategy). Not a shot at the players left in that class. Just an observation that our higher ranked class is an illusion. And even if our guys in 2008 do wind up being better than either TCU's or SMU's... It really isn't relevant to what we're all dealing with and able to accomplish again this year on the recruiting trail. If you want to talk players, that's a whole different situation than pointing at foggy memories of aggregate recruiting class scores.

Ok, I Am Officially Onboard With Decision!
TheTastyGreek replied to meangreenbob's topic in Mean Green Football
When I was young, my grandfather taught me a valuable life lesson: If you build a man a fire, he'll be warm for a night. But if you SET a man on fire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life. He was right, at least about the hobo he used as a teaching aid. -

TheTastyGreek replied to meangreenbob's topic in Mean Green Football
That's not necessarily true. Self-immolation protests have affected change all across the world. Anyone who's really fed up and outraged over this decision shouldn't bother with stern letters or angry phone calls. Don't cancel season tickets or MGC membership. If anyone wants to show them you really mean business... Set yourself on fire on the steps of the Athletics Center. Extreme? Perhaps. That's a matter of opinion. But there's no question that it gets the point across. -

Darrell Dickey Deserves An Apology!
TheTastyGreek replied to meangreenbob's topic in Mean Green Football
It's not exactly the most airtight argument I've ever put together. My heart isn't really in any of this at the moment. It's pointless and discouraging. Fire away, though. I'm sure you've got a good point, and I would like to hear it. -
Kenny Barrett Justin Edwards Alonzo Horton How many points were they worth? How many points did we get for Riley Dodge, and does TD have any other Parade All-Americans in the house who can pump up our recruiting rankings in the years to come? Also... TCU signed 15 guys. We signed 26. Meanwhile, SMU hired June Jones on January 7th, 2008... Giving him 30 days to put together his entire recruiting class. So... We edged out a school that signed 11 fewer guys and another that had a month to recruit. And that's with 3 of our top recruits never playing a down for us or even getting to campus. And that's the class that contained the coach's highly ranked son. Comforting.

Darrell Dickey Deserves An Apology!
TheTastyGreek replied to meangreenbob's topic in Mean Green Football
There are only 120 D-1A jobs out there. Remember the list of guys who are out on the street right now who have histories of building programs that we could have hired tomorrow? Franchione, Bower, John L. Smith, Steve Logan, Chuck Amato, Jeff Jagodzinski... All those guys? None of them have been Head Coaches since, either.
