  1. I don't think we need to waste any more time arguing the merits or worthiness of Canales the North Texas head coach. It seems like he's going to get a hell of a recommendation, well earned, for whatever his next head coaching opportunity winds up being.
  2. I was both student and alum. Attended North Texas starting in 1998 and graduated in 2002. I paid next to no attention when I was a student until the very end of my time (literally, the late summer and fall of 2002) and didn't get a chance to start attending football regularly until the 2004 season. I was here when the run started but didn't really start giving it any credit or investing emotionally in what was happening until after I graduated.
  3. I was worse than "barely had an eye on the program". I thought college sports was one of the dumbest things in all creation. I repeatedly turned down offers to attend games for free (my dad tried to take me to one of the Texas Tech games at Texas Stadium, gruu tried to get me to attend basketball games under Jankovich and Trilli). Generally, when someone would offer, I wasn't particularly polite in expressing why I didn't want to waste any time going to a game. If I had bothered to vote in the student fee election the first time they tried to pass a stadium fee, I would have voted against it. When we opened a season against Oklahoma, an alum was trying to convince me we'd be competitive. I bet him a dollar and a "loser has to shut the hell up about NT sports sucking/being awesome", even with (I think) a 30-something point line, I won and teased him mercilessly for daring to believe the team ever had a prayer of keeping things close. A few years later in 2008, I was in a hotel room in Manhattan, Kansas trying to convince FilmerJ that we had a shot at beating Kansas State. Even as I watched the Idaho game back in 2001 on TV with a bunch of NT alum co-workers, I made jokes about the situation. Within a year and a half, I was completely bought in. Now I'm a North Texas season ticket holder and I schedule most of my working life and my personal life around NT sports. Wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Dickey.
  4. I'll go ahead and tell you for sure that I never, EVER would have come to a North Texas sporting event if it weren't for Darrell Dickey and the Sun Belt win streak. I definitely wouldn't have engaged with the school and the community if it weren't for MeanMag and GoMeanGreen. And I might not still be around if it weren't for Johnny Jones.
  5. Sounds like they need to git sum kickin'.
  6. Haven't heard anything about McGhee coming on board next year. Based on nothing other than the fact he came here for a week before getting hustled off to a JUCO by our staff, I would be VERY surprised if they gave him another shot at North Texas.
  7. JJ was above .500 immediately. If we brought someone in for Shanice who went 15-14 in Year One, then I'd think they could know how to make use of a 4 or 5 year rebuilding window.
  8. I am loving these updates.
  9. I need someone to make a road trip to SHSU with me. I think that one's on a Tuesday. This one, we're making a weekend out of it and visiting the in-laws.
  10. Texas Southern - Saturday, December 4th in Houston (7:00 p.m.) Single game tickets are $10. (Open invitation for Houston area alums)
  11. The only way he gets one is if the NCAA grants a waiver and allows him a 6th year. And we don't usually get favorable decisions from the NCAA. I can't remember the last time something came down in our favor that required an exemption or a judgment call.
  12. The night has begun. Western leading Hofstra early. Middle actually playing like they give a damn, 25 points in less than 8 minutes and a nice lead on Campbell.
  13. Thought about that, too. But our senior night will be February 26th, last home game against Denver. S. Meth will be on the road playing Marshall that day.
  14. I'll be honest enough to say that at the time his transfer was announced, it looked like a win for all parties involved. Collin was going to be the 6th or 7th guard option among Josh/Tristan/Shannon/Dom/Alzee/RJ McGhee. Despite his talent and dedication, he seemed very unlikely to get any real time on the floor. And at the time, we appeared to have a reasonably good shot at picking up one of a number of high value transfers (J'mison Morgan, Chris Babb, Marshall Henderson, among others). There was some discussion about whether we could free up a scholarship to get one or more of those transfer guys over the summer. In the end, it worked out about as poorly as possible for us. McGhee couldn't make it academically, none of the transfers wound up filling Mangrum's ship, and now Alzee is sitting out with injury problems. Instead of Mangrum sitting near the bottom of a 7 guard rotation, he would have been a critical 5th option in a 3 guard lineup. It looked like a win for everyone. Instead, we wind up light at guard and Mangrum is stuck as a walk-on for a godawful team slogging through what looks to be a godawful season.
  15. I don't think Western gets knocked around again. Losing to Minnesota and Tubby Smith is very understandable. WKU should take this one without much trouble. Agree with a toss-up in MTSU vs. Campbell. We really need to start getting some of these toss-ups, though. I still think Troy is the dregs of the conference this year. Even worse than ULM. I think any other SBC team would be a clear favorite against Georgia State... But this is probably another toss-up. The book on Cleveland State is a weak interior, talented and deep perimeter lineup. If ULL had a strong frontcourt (Bureau at sub 200 lbs doesn't qualify) or the depth to defend that kind of opponent (which they haven't really shown in any game I've been able to see)... I'd share the hopes for a W. I'll go the other way and say this has the potential to be the biggest blowout of the night. Western and one of the two toss-up games would be an adequate night. 3 out of 4 would make me feel better about the week.
  16. Presbyterian played their hearts out against K-State. 60% from 3 point land, 50% shooting on the night. K-State was 9-19 from the free throw line. 7 of 24 (sub-30%) on 3 point shots. K-State was looking ahead to games against Duke/Gonzaga/Marquette later in this tournament. And Presbyterian still lost by 9 points. I think we can go out and compete with Kansas, but not because K-State couldn't shoot last night.
  17. Dez Willingham says maybe you're jumping to an invalid conclusion.
  18. Plus expenses? What does it cost to buy the guy a fresh box of crayons and a juice box? If he turns in the next report in fingerpaint, is there a fridge in the AC where we can hang it?
  19. Mod reverse psych games Make Chris Canales look smooth I see through your ruse.
  20. Hard as you may try, You'll never kill the haikus. A bit built to last.
  21. He keeps it together like the Black Knight. One more round of attacks and the party is over forever.
  22. The 150 rule has one exemption: If YOUR school's RPI is above 150, you don't have to worry about opponent RPI. We haven't been below 150 in RPI since 2005-06. We can schedule whoever we want (from D1) unless we stop being awesome.
  23. I think it's obvious why there's a double standard at work here. Collin Mangrum is WHITE. Yeah, I played it. BOOM.
