Vito doesn't just write articles for the people who know 99% of what's in them before they're even published.
My dad lives in Denton, actually has a daily DMN subscription, and still asked me in June whether Benford was coming back for another year.
Back when we fired Dickey, guys who work in sports media asked me why we'd fire a guy who had been so successful.
The vast majority of the readership of the DRC probably has little to no day-to-day awareness of UNT sports, and context items like this (or Dodge's record, or the last time we had a player drafted into the NFL) are a large part of what makes news stories make sense to them.
Vito isn't being a dick. He's doing his job so that his articles make sense and have context for an ignorant reader, or anyone that reads it online (or in a different Belo publication) can get at least a thumbnail sketch of what's going on beyond the immediate subject of the blog/article/story/headline.
When you read everything he writes, some of it will seem redundant or repetitive. Probably the unpleasant reminders of specific shame, failure, and futility.
