High School-to-college Coach Foundering In Year 2
shaft replied to mgsteve's topic in Mean Green Football
Dodge should call 1-800-Mean-Greeen of help with his "foundering" problems. I hear their operated by UNT alum. -
I don't know this isn't one of the options that comes up on dynasty mode on play station.
-
15 players tested positive for non-performance enhancing drugs. What action do you think the Coach/School should take?
-
NCAA does random testing. UNT got wind that some red flags would come up on those test, so Dodge said let's test everyone.
-
This came about has result of an open records request. Its not like this just slipped out at the coaches show. But hey if you like your public institutions doing everything in secret and not drug testing, I might suggest moving in the City of Dallas.

Positive Drug Tests Are Not Good Publicity!
shaft replied to dallasite21's topic in Mean Green Football
You got it all wrong. This is just part of a new marketing campaign <insert pot joke here> -
How nice of you to refer to yourself in third person.
-
I think Dodge did the right thing. It looks like Dodge knew the NCAA test were going to raise some red flags, so he nipped it in the bud and had the whole team tested. That way he knows the entire scope of the problem, and can address it has a whole. Would you have rather Dodge played a cat and mouse game, where random students get tested and retested? Then someone screams about due process, and new labs have to be drawn up. Dodge bold move lets him know exactly what's going on. He has some kids smoking pot, know we can address the issue head on.
-
This isn't that big of a deal. Players get busted for doing something wrong every week. Dodge took a pro-active measure to understand the entire scope of the issue. Instead of letting this thing get dragged out for weeks with random testing, and retesting to respond to the NCAA test, he tested everyone. I'm not pro-pot, but I really don't think this is that big of deal. If your going to jump up and down and shout on this message board about how bad this is for the school and team, then I hope you will extend your outrage to other areas of your life. Shouldn't you demand that your school district and city drug test every employee, at the very least every new hire?

I think Dodge did the right thing having the whole team tested. I think he knew the NCAA test was going to raise a red flag, so he had the whole team tested to see the entire scope of the "problem." That move takes guts. There are lots of organizations that don't test everyone, because they don't want to know the full scope of their employees drugs use. Most school districts and cities don't test every employee because they don't want to know, because they don't want the public head-ache of dealing with the issue. Dodge decision to know the full scope shows two things; 1. A desire to deal with issue as a whole. 2. A complete miscalculation of how the open records process works.

Pssst. Maybe some of you have heard the news; the students passed the stadium vote. The Doom and Gloom attitude about RV and the Stadium just seems misplaced. I really don't understand how someone can fault an AD to designing and executing a Master Plan that brings the school a new stadium, and makes coaching hire that energizes the fan base. The Dodge hire had a tremendous upside. Exciting "young" coach, locally known, requested by the fan base, great recruiting connections. But there were two big questions about the guy; 1. Can he really recruit, 2.) Can he get college level assistants. The problem with the Dodge era has been concern number 2. His assistant hires have been suspect at best, and he will probably never be able to overcome those early picks. Dodge is behind the Eight Ball to get this team to .500 next season.

It's like Simon all over again. You can't spell blunt without U-N-T.
-
Well that's compelling. I especially like the way you offer no warrant, data, or really any sort of an argument to support your claim. So I'll ask what about the Master Plan or new stadium don't you like? While there were questions about the Dodge hire, there was a clear upside had it panned out. Sadly the high school experiment is not working and its time to begin looking for the next coach.

Are you going to respond to the rest of my post? Calling a bunch of kids who voted to raise a future bunch of kids the "greatest generation" is insulting to the Greatest Generations. Just as Nick Sabin comparing Bama's loss to ULM to September 11th was inappropriate. I'm glad the stadium vote passed.

Lonnie doesn't get it. Bringing in a new coach means letting him his system/staff. The problem was Dodge didn't have a college level staff and there was no way to know that until they got a few games under their collective belts. We can all see the HS experiment is not working, so the question now becomes how to devise an exit strategy. -Do you give Dodge a full 4 years? -Do you give him 3 years with firm performance goals? -Do you give him 10 more games? -Do we get a rope? Of course RV is ultimately responsible for Dodge, but just mean its his problem to handle. The success of the Master Plan and Stadium are much more important than a coaching decision that can be corrected. What Lonnie doesn't get is 19k people are still holding out hope for this program and Dodge, so there is no reason to getting heated at RV for not firing Dodge on the spot. I'm about as anti-Dodge as you can get (I was one of the only posters on this board that wanted Dickey to stay,) but I still think the guy should get to finish out the season. Hell I think Dodge should even get to come back for season three as long as he wins at least one game this year. But calling for RV's head is just reactionary and silly.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3667258 Willingham to step down as Huskies coach at season's end Associated Press, Updated: October 27, 2008, 3:22 PM ET SEATTLE -- Washington coach Tyrone Willingham said Monday he will step down at the end of the 2008 season. The embattled Washington coach fell to 0-7 on Saturday after a 33-7 loss to Notre Dame. Willingham and athletics director Scott Woodward made the announcement at a news conference. Willingham has been under fire for being unable to turn around the Washington program. He is 11-32 overall in his four seasons with the Huskies. Washington currently has a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season, tied with North Texas for the longest in the country. Woodward has said he did not want to change coaches during the middle of the season. But he said Monday's announcement ends speculation of what is going to happen with Willingham and lets the team focus on the final five games.

I don't really think I should be one on here defending Dodge (since I started this thread and all), but Lonnie is way off base with the attacks on RV. Dodge was a good pick for all of financial reasons related to the program: -a popular pick to excite the fan base -a good face of the program to help with the stadium efforts. The problem with Dodge is the damage has been done. -He brought in the wrong guys last year and the team didn't get the "growth" it needed. -Dodge reputation with the fan base is now suspect at best. -We got the stadium so we don't need a face man anymore.
-
Does the sighting of a 2nd Albino Squirrel count as a "bright spot."
-
Greatest Generation of Students??? Voting for a fee increase for future students is hardly worthy of a WW2 analogy. RV deserves 99% of the credit for the stadium vote. -The master plan -The doing the project in phases -The private donor fund raising -Structuring the financing so the students only have to pay for the back end. -Getting the student senate on board early.
-
I think calling out the players is B.S. I think its the coaches' job to fit the scheme to the talent they have (that's what Dickey did, and that's why what Dickey did worked.)
-
Maybe you should hush. RV has done, is doing, and will continue to do, a fantastic job as Athletic Director. RV legacy at North Texas will be the Sports Master Plan, which includes the new stadium. The fan base was calling for Dodge, so you can't pin that on RV. Dodge's resume showed he was ready for the move up from HS. The problem is things just didn't pan out for Dodge. The team has not been able to recover from his early mistakes (mainly his choice of assistants last season).
-
The Dodge apologist on this board keep saying its the talent not the coaching. And I know people on this board like to freak out anytime anyone remotely hints that a player isn't ready for D1, so just list the position and not the players name. Let's use this thread as a chance to let the Dodge L&A's explain their argument and not just hint the players aren't up to snuff.

We have a habit of making all our opponents look good.

At this point I think Dodge has 10 games left. He will be fired mid-season next year after his sixth loss.
