  1. That's not true. Jerry wanted a downtown stadium across 35 in-between the AAC and West End. Fair Park was the second choice site. The city wanted the stadium at Fair Park, the County wanted Los Colinas. Miller couldn't/wouldn't deal with Jerry and Arlington overpaid. And none of this as anything to do with UTSA.
  2. So do we or don't we need an MMA cage?
  3. Tulane from undefeated at the beginning of the BCS era to ... What are we on? 11 years of not qualifying for your own New Orleans bowl.
  4. "But in places like the MAC, I don't know how they'll keep up. They could issue bonds and keep raising student fees, but I think at some point, those are going to max out. Even at the self-supporting schools, I think the donors are going to max out at some point." http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8047787/college-football-facilities-arms-race-proves-recession-proof
  5. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8047787/college-football-facilities-arms-race-proves-recession-proof The construction craze is hardly new in college sports. According to Street & Smith's Business Journal, universities spent a collective $15 billion on sports facilities between 1995 and 2005. It goes back much farther than that, though. Many iconic college football stadiums, particularly in the Midwest, were built shortly after World War I as campus pride reached new heights. What seems to have changed in the last decade or so is how much money has been spent on places fans never see: opulent locker rooms, spacious offices for coaches and state-of-the art practice facilities that are specific to one sport. And despite the late NCAA president Myles Brand's warnings about the destructive nature of the arms race, schools haven't slowed down in erecting fancy new structures.
  6. As someone who doesn't pay the fee I say it should be double the max.
  7. If Denton wasn't already a tourist draw with a huge government presence, then the criticism in the Atlantic might apply. The article is also talking about big conventions, where Denton is making a play for a much different market. Ask yourself if Hurst can support a convention center why can't Denton?
  8. 23 is completely off base. Denton has a really good Connvention and Visitors Bureau and Denton is doing alot to make itself a better destination. The fact that they are looking at a convention center with hotel would disprove his point all together. The horse country tour just won a bunch of tourism awards, the area between the square and train station is booming, Dentons festivals are getting better organized and growing, and then theres at other university in town. The fact that other destinations have something to offer, doesn't discredit Denton as a tourism location. I'd rather visit Denton than Hurst, Irving, Amarillo, Waxahachie, Longview, Lewisville, Colleyville, or Waco (all convention centers that have had renovations in the past two years).
  9. Hunter has no idea what he's talking about. The Denton CVB could give you a dozen reasons to do business in Denton beyond UNT. Why do you think Denton does millions of dollars a year in direct hotel spending. And Gralevine isn't jus some suburban Tourism market, they've grown themselves into a full-scale tourism destination. The tourism industry is a highly segmented industry and the small meeting market (1,000 or less) is a big part of the industry.
  10. Did they have the gateway center yet? I pm for the convention center and hotel. But I refuse to believe the school does so much convention business that it can't support it on campus.
  11. Mark G is going bit overboard on the sell job for a convention center. I agree that the new hotel and convention center will be an economic boast. But saying it will create a cost savings because University and City events are booked somewhere else is a stretch. When was the last time you saw a UNT booked at the Lewisville convention center?
  12. I think were missing the boat on this thread. Where is UNT in the big scheme of things? Where it should be. We made the commitment to a new stadium, better coach and salary, so we reap the reward of a better conference. What missing? It's not just the volume of wins, it's the quality of wins. Last season we did what every team should have done; beat the teams we are better than. We beat the teams we had better records than, we lost to teams with better records than us. It takes that type of consistency to improve to the point where you start beating teams with better records. Payday body bag games. We don't schedule those games to prove we can hang with the SEC, we take those games because we need the check. The 2000 class. That group was a under the radar bunch. They fit Dickey's mantra of guys other school's didn't want or didn't know how to use.
  13. [quote name='UNT90' timestamp='1339184514' post='649143'] Playing 1-11 Indiana was like playing Rice when Rice was in the SWC. Except Indiana isn't in the SWC. Don't get me wrong. Beats the hell outta Ball St., Ohio, Tulsa, and even CUSA version of Rice, but not on par with a 1 loss Houston or a metroplex rival SMU. And it's not even close.
  14. The city doesn't have to carry the entire note, just the public portion of the project (the convention center). The city has 300k-500k room in the hotel/motel fund to carry the debt service on the public portion of the project. Plus the city will likely dedicate all the taxes generated from the project toward covering the project. The project may even get an assist from the state legislature like the new CC in Amarillo is getting. Point is this not break the bank and cause a property tax increase.
  15. As exciting as the public policy sub-debate is the numbers are wrong. Denton pulls in $2 million dollars a month in taxable hotel revenue, that's something like $1.7 million a year in hotel occupancy taxes. So I'm betting Denton can pay the debt service on it's share of the convention center without tapping the General fund.
  16. Bowl realignment follows conference realignment. With the WAC going away the potato bowl could move to San Antonio and give CUSA another option.
  17. Why hasnt this been moved to the... No One Cares About Texas State forum
  18. 1. Of course they are negotiating behind close doors. That's where negotiations take place. 2. What tax increase? The item would likely be paid out of hote occupancy taxes which can only be used for things that enhance tourism. Denton had enough HOT money to waste on the Super Bowl committee, they have money for a conference center.
  19. I heard he also gets a personal 'Stache stylist
  20. But he didn't. He thought he and is high school buddies knew better. And that's one of the many reasons TD was the worst coach in school history. And know Dodge apologist are trying to blame RV for TD's coaching hires. The Dodge era was the worst in school, do why are you trying to defend it.
  21. Or one could say even with all this "post NCAA" talent, Dodge still couldn't get it done. TD was a failure of a college coach. The Dodge era was the worst in school history.
  22. The real window of opportunity for UNT is 2013 and 2014 to establish ourselves in CUSA. The goal for next season is to get ready for CUSA.
  23. A two tiered post season (bowls + playoffs) devalues the lower level of the playoffs. Just look at the revenue and ratings for the NCAA BB tourney vs. NIT, bowls vs fcs playoffs. A 4 team playoff or a plus one system might be small enough to upset the system, but an 8 or more starts to risk under ing the second tier as we've seen with the BCS bowls. Unless the NCAA is going to redistribute football revenue evenly, there is no good reason to add to the gulf between haves and have nots.
  24. I don't like any playoff system, I li,e bowl games. So what if college football is different than the NFL. Even in a magical world where all conference champs are guaranteed a spot in a 64 team playoff, I think it would suck for a team like Troy to end their season at Wisconsin in December.
  25. I agree I don't know why admissions stats matter in a thread about prowrestling. UNT has Stone Cold & the Von Erichs. Shawn Michaels dropped out of Southwest Texas. That's two hall of famers to half a hall of famer. And I don't know what TXST has to do with any of this? We were talking about UTA.
