  1. from Brett Vito's Mean Green Blog Baker will wait until the end of the season to evaluate men’s basketball coach Tony Benford. Benford is coming off a 12-20 season and has finished at .500 or under in all four seasons of his tenure after taking over a program that had strung together six straight winning seasons under Johnny Jones, who led the Mean Green to two NCAA tournaments in that span. Benford is 54-73 at UNT. “Tony has a strong reputation and I want to step in and see what I can do to help him be successful,” Baker said. “After the end of the season, we will sit down and evaluate what we need to do going forward.” http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2016/08/wren-baker-press-conference-highlights.html/
  2. **** are you, in fact, endorsing Floyd the possibly incognito 36 year old Port Aransas cocaine dealer as our next athletic director? .
  3. STILLWATER, Okla. -- A 21-year-old Oklahoma State University basketball player died Thursday after collapsing following a team workout, the school said in a statement on its website. Tyrek Coger, a junior college transfer from Raleigh, North Carolina, was transported to Stillwater Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m., the school said. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/osu-basketball-player-dies-following-team-workout-tyrek-coger/

  4. Yeah, how dare anybody graduate and have a higher priority than playing another year of football.
  5. Maybe it's self discipline, but is it possible to have selfless self discipline?
  6. How do you compare North Texas uniforms to the other D1 schools in Texas. DMN Poll at bottom of page. http://sportsday.dallasnews.com/college-sports/collegesports/2016/06/30/best-texas-school-best-set-uniforms
  7. I attend most of the coaches shows, at least during football season, and I don't recall any personal attacks on any fans. I am not saying something didn't or couldn't have happened, but there was nothing that I was familiar with. Plus, we're a goofy motley group that passionately follows a college program that is commonly regarded as one of the least significant in the land. Characters like us are gonna get chided a little bit, even by our own.
  8. Man, sign the man up immediately if the worst that any detractor can say about him is "in 1997 somebody wasn't invited into an event that was reserved for certain level donors." I remember the situation well (and he did initially come out of looking like a pompous jerk) but both people involved met and talked through it. I consider that to have been a learning experience as that volunteer wound up being a very generous donor.
  9. I fancy myself as a knee-jerk reaction, grab-the-torches-and-pitchforks kind of guy like many of you, but...... and I guess I may be alone on this, I appreciate what George had to say. Hank very well may be the person best equipped to take over this athletic department. Hank knows the fan base, is familiar with working with the university, is well connected with the financial boosters, is dedicated to participating in community activities, and has been instrumental in North Texas finding sponsors. Additionally he is a very eloquent representative for a school that desperately needs that, and his dedication cannot be questioned as he has spent more time promoting this university, including countless evenings and weekends, than many of us would ever consider. Hank also stayed with North Texas when he was offered the TAMUCC AD position because North Texas is home for him and his family. You're not going to find many with qualities like that through some reach firm. I appreciate people like Hank. North Texas has had far too few of them, especially in higher profile positions, in the 3+ decades that I have been following this program. Likewise, at the Monday night airing of grievances, I cannot remember a single complaint voiced that had anything to do with Hank's job performance. I heard a lot that we need change, and I will not disagree with that. North Texas on-field and on-court performance has been terrible and customer service is horrific if you are not one of the few people who sit in the cocktail suites. The ticket office is regarded as a fiasco and the promotions are functionally nonexistent. All that may be true, but how are those items under Hanks direction? Should Hank automatically ascend to the AD position? No, we need to see what other viable options are available and compare their abilities. But in no way should Hank be discarded as a candidate. He has sat through more crap football and basketball than anyone but still fought to promote the university in a positive light, he where the problems (and problem people) are in the department and is uniquely qualified to quickly fix them. Be careful what change you wish for because you might just get it. We sure got it from Steve Sloan, Richard McDuffie, and Craig Helwig at North Texas: people who accepted this AD position simply to screw off and simply advance their own interests. ps - I am not personal friends with Hank, or George, or a single person that may or may not be retained in the athletic department.
  10. There were priorities more important than winning, and vengeance if anybody questioned that.

  12. Not saying in all cases, but it is easy to get early commitments from players that the power programs have little to no interest in. In our case it may be better to continue pursuing and have scholarships available later to entice potentially higher caliber players that those programs may be waffling on.

  16. Baylor Media Communications announced that President Ken Starr will continue his role as Chancellor and law Professor as Dr. David Garland is named interim university president. Baylor head football coach Art Briles will be suspended with intent to terminate after his 8 seasons with the Bears. Athletic Director Ian McCaw is sanctioned and placed on probation, and Baylor will self-report to the NCAA. Board of Regents fires Briles, Starr removed as President
  17. Pretty cool non-basketball note, his father is a Maori and played on New Zealand's national rugby team.
  18. Wow Adler, that's nearly a perfect candidate for our requirements! I love that he won a national championship as the top assistant to Billy Donovan and his amazing success wit the VCU program (45-9, 83.3%) was against div.1 schools and not based on scheduling patsies. He is an excellent recruiter and a proven leader as a coach. Here is his bio from the Oklahoma City Thunder: Anthony Grant | Assistant Coach Anthony Grant joins the Thunder bench in 2015-16 after spending the past nine years serving as head coach at the University of Alabama and Virginia Commonwealth University. In nine seasons at Alabama and VCU, Grant compiled a record of 193-110 (.637) at the two schools. During the past six years at Alabama, Grant amassed a record of 117-85 (.579) while guiding the Crimson Tide to the 2012 NCAA tournament, their first tournament berth since the 2006 season. Alabama also advanced to the NIT tournament on three occasions during Grant’s tenure. In addition to leading Alabama to three straight 20-win campaigns, Grant also led the Tide to a winning record in SEC play for three consecutive seasons (2011-13). It marked the first time since the 1994-1996 seasons that Alabama had compiled three consecutive winning seasons in conference play. Prior to Alabama, Grant spent three seasons as the head coach of VCU where he led the Rams to a 76-25 (.752) record while winning three consecutive Colonial Athletic Association Championships. Grant’s time at VCU was highlighted by a pair of NCAA tournament appearances and a 45-9 (.833) mark in CAA games. A Miami native, Grant spent 10 years at the University of Florida (1996-2006) where he served under Billy Donovan. Grant helped lead the Gators to their first national title in 2006 before departing for VCU. Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Grant enjoyed a successful collegiate playing career at the University of Dayton (1983-87). The Flyers went 70-49 (.588), with a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and one NIT berth during Grant’s time in uniform. In 105 games at Dayton, Grant averaged 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and was named the team's most valuable player as a senior.
  19. I have a name that I'd like you guys to consider, former VCU and Alabama coach Anthony Grant.(currently an assistant for the OKC Thunder) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Grant His success as an assistant at Florida alone is enough to warrant consideration as a head coach, but he has also been very successful as a head coach. He has a wealth of experience and is still only 49 years old. From Wikipedia: Anthony Grant posted an impressive 76–25 record in his three seasons as the head men's basketball coach at VCU. He was an outright dominating 52–10 versus CAA opponents, including conference tournaments, capturing three straight CAA Regular Season Conference Championships and two CAA Conference Tournament Championships. He led VCU to two NCAA Tournament berths and one NIT berth before departing the program to take over the head coaching position at the University of Alabama. Season Team Overall ConferenceStanding Postseason VCU Rams (Colonial Athletic Association) (2006–2009) 2006–07 VCU 28–7 16–2 1st NCAA 2nd Round 2007–08 VCU 24–8 15–3 1st NIT 1st Round 2008–09 VCU 24–10 14–4 1st NCAA 1st Round VCU: 76–25 (.752) 45–9 (.833) Alabama Crimson Tide (Southeastern Conference) (2009–2015) 2009–10 Alabama 17–15 6–10 T–4th (West) 2010–11 Alabama 25–12 12–4 1st (West) NIT Runner–up 2011–12 Alabama 21–12 9–7 5th NCAA 2nd Round 2012–13 Alabama 23–13 12–6 T–2nd NIT Quarterfinals 2013–14 Alabama 13–19 7–11 T–10th 2014–15 Alabama 18–14 8–10 T–8th NIT 2nd Round* Alabama: 117–85 (.579) 54–49 (.524) Total: 193–110 (.637) An ideal situation would be to hire Anthony Grant as head coach and retain Tony Benford as Associate Head Coach. I think that North Texas could quickly build something very special.
  20. Instead of having his contract bought out and his employment terminated, is there a chance that Tony Benford could be reassigned and retained as an assistant coach? His head coaching performances have been suspect, possibly due to this being his first head coaching position at any level, but his abilities as an assistant coach, especially concerning recruiting and player evaluations have been exceptional throughout his career.
  21. The Tomato was alright but it often had a mixture of Dentonites not associated with UNT. The State Club across the street was THE place to be on Thursday evenings, and with $1.75 pitchers, was still worthwhile any night of the week.
  22. Pic is from, I'd guess 87-88. The guy in the front wearing the white shirt (Emery) was a close friend of GMoney's older brother and now lives in Winter Park, CO. He's talking with a mullet guy (Bowen) in the leather Members Only style jacket (and yes, it was horribly outdated by then) lives in Lewisville, and the blonde in white (Maureen) is a former girlfriend of mine who now lives in Chandler, AZ.
  23. 247 Sports reports that he's received 13 offers including North Texas last summer, many of which are surely no longer valid, but he has yet to sign with anybody. Would the talents of this Northeastern Oklahoma inside linebacker be a fit for our new defensive system?
  24. There's absolutely no reason it should suck. Television scheduling will not be a factor considering these two teams 2015 records. This is also the last game that SMU has contracted to play in Denton and North Texas' only realistic shot at a sellout in the foreseeable future. A series extension past the 2017 game in Dallas has been discussed but to my knowledge nothing has been signed. We know that the average temperature for September 3 in Denton is 94 degrees, and we know that the sun will set at 7:48 PM. So figuring by those facts, ticket buyers on the east side of the stadium will be baking and staring into the sun any time before 7:30. Those fans will not have an optimum experience and will be less inclined to return for subsequent games against less marketable opponents. Starting this gave before 7:30 would be idiotic. Get a good crowd there and make sure they have the best time possible, and inspire them to return to additional games. Why would anybody working with scheduling aspire to do otherwise?
