  1. That theory is exactly how we got stuck in the Fouts Field rut for 60 years. Don't improve obsolete facilities unless they are constantly sold out. We already know that Apogee is not large enough for us to host the type of games we want. Why not plan accordingly?
  2. No, but THEY do, and THEY"RE the ones adding the deck. All kidding aside, its something that should be looked into but construction would still be several years away. We don't host Texas Tech until 2027. Maybe we can get some other regional P5's scheduled in the meantime. TCU's contract with SMU expires after next year. That may be an opportunity to get a couple of games, but would almost certainly be contingent upon us having the stadium expanded. Unlike SMU we do not have an empty stadium to offer.
  3. No, it's not. College football attendance has actually increased at most schools. The AVERAGE ATTENDANCE for FBS football has fallen because of all the schools that have been reclassified to FBS and their sparse attendance. CUSA and the Sun Belt are full of schools that have moved to FBS in that timeframe and none of these newbies (including us) matches the average of the pre-existing FBS schools.
  4. It's right behind the failing to plan is planning to fail graphic.
  5. I know there is the "keep selling it out first" argument, and I hear you, but you're wrong. But, having a 30K stadium and a 28K fan base is going to keep regional P5 schools from wanting to schedule games at Apogee. The costs of not expanding Apogee may therefore exceed the costs of expansion through lost revenue. One of the main reasons schools would schedule UNT is to provide a game in the metroplex that their DFW fans and alumni can attend. Unlike SMU we do not have a practically empty stadium to offer. Where would the fans of Baylor, Kansas State, Texas Tech, A&M, or TCU sit if we were to schedule them? North Texas was able to host Baylor, Kansas State, and TCU at Fouts Field because we had a relatively small fan base at the time. That is simply not he case now. Games against Texas Tech and A&M were diverted to the Cowboys Stadium because our own stadium couldn't accommodate the crowds. We certainly don't want to have to do that again. Growing pains. What a great thing to have. View full article
  6. The Mean Green have arrived Wow, I love this write-up.
  7. Thank you, and God bless you Dr Norval F Pohl. Your dreams for North Texas are all becoming a reality. People doubted when you said that North Texas, a university with few resources, could become a National Tier 1 Research Institution. People in the North Texas academic community scoffed when you brought in former Alabama coach Gene Stallings as an adviser on how to build and sustain a nationally respected athletic program at the University of North Texas. You and your bride Barbikay would be so pleased with our current North Texas President Neal Smatresk and the outstanding people that he has brought in to continue your legacy. Dr Norval F Pohl passed away in 2009, and Barbikay passed in 2016. Their contributions to this university will never be forgotten.
  8. They had very very few game highlights so they show a lot of players jogging around in practice last week, lots and lots of filler, show only their few highlights from the game, and fail to say who won. It's like watching really bad Baghdad Bob propaganda television. Click Here: PonyUp TV - The North Texas Game

  12. All of us old people were thinking "what a peculiar sack dance", but almost all the teens in the stadium recognized it immediately and loved it.

  15. What was the Mean Green soccer team’s alumni reunion game, which hosted over 20 North Texas soccer alums who combined had more than 50 conference championships between them, was also an alumni game in the coaching boxes Sunday at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium. UNT and its head coach John Hedlund, a 1984 Midwestern State soccer alum, faced off against Pittsburgh and its first-year head coach Randy Waldrum, a two-time NCAA National Champion head coach at Notre Dame and a 1980 Midwestern State alum. On Sunday, UNT got the best of Pitt as they won 4-1. https://www.dentonrc.com/sports/soccer-unt-bests-pittsburgh-with---win/article_5e76fdef-b179-563f-a382-3de7585fd654.html
  16. I keep reading these statements that SMU leads the Safeway Bowl rivalry by a 31-6-1 margin. That's simply not the case. SMU held an 18-1-1 advantage in the pre-WWII days when they granted athletic scholarships in the University Division while North Texas did not in the College Division. All games were played at SMU and all officials were Southwest Conference employees. It was clearly an uneven playing field. SMU held a 7-1 advantage in games played 1974-1984 while they were wildly cheating, paying players, in what culminated with the Death Penalty for their program. Note - Until June Jones, every SMU coach that has had a winning season since 1958 when the NCAA started policing infractions had been caught for major recruiting violations. SMU held a 2-1 advantage in the games 1989-1992 while North Texas played at the FCS (1-AA) level with the significantly lower 1-AA scholarship limit. The playing field was finally leveled when North Texas moved to the FBS subdivision in 1994 but SMU refused to play North Texas. This prompted North Texas coach Matt Simon to issue the challenge "If they'd like to play on a Safeway parking lot just give a time and date." SMU dodged the challenge by stating that they weren't cowardly, but that the match-up just didn't make good business sense for them." By the early 2000's SMU had a new stadium that sat relatively empty except on the few dates that it was filled by fans of former SWC opponents like Baylor, Tech, TCU and A&M. SMU cancelled their men's track & field and cross country programs in 2004 citing financial reasons. Those home and home non-conference series with former SWC opponents, all except TCU, soon started drying up. The Safeway Bowl series was then started in 2006, the first time ever that SMU and North Texas met on a level playing field: no scholarship differences, no paying players. North Texas won that game 24-6. The Safeway Bowl has been played six more times with SMU holding a 4-3 edge in the series. The series has been good for North Texas because it's fans are possibly only ones in the nation that are excited about playing SMU, and just as importantly for SMU they now have a home and home rivalry other than TCU that brings out more fans than any of their supposed 'conference rivals'.
  17. This is an interesting Post Game Report from SMU, including commentary on how they had dominated the series with North Texas back before WWII and where the SMU Football program is today. Be sure to read the commentary in the report. Click Here: SMU Post Game Report
  18. https://weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/l/Denton+TX+USTX0353:1:US The Weather Channel has updated this evening's forecast to being partly cloudy, 91 degrees at kickoff and dropping to 84, with a 10-12 mph breeze. This is about the best weather possible for this time of year. Go Mean Green!
  19. Don't hit me with those negative waves so early in the morning. Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change? Think the victory will be there and it will be there. It's a mother, beautiful victory, and it's gonna be there. OK?
  20. The SMU Tailgate Party is located at the base of the Apogee footbridge on the Fouts parking lot side. That's quite a hike from the Blue lot, and parking at Fouts is cheaper and also has a free shuttle service for people that prefer not to cross on the footbridge.
  21. First, sorry about this old pic. It was taken before the bridge from Fouts to Apogee was built but it shows the area south of Victory that has been changed. The BLUE LOT, just to the right of Victory Hall above, has been substantially enlarged. The entire field where those white eight tents shown in this picture has been turned into a parking lot that spans all the way to the Waranch Tennis Center. I'm sure you're saying "but Adler, how does this affect tailgating?" There are now many more parking spaces than parking passes that have been issued for this lot. Anyone with $30.00 can now pull up and pay the attendees to park in this premier tailgate party area. Get there very early if you plan to tailgate in the BLUE LOT as we know there will now be a long line for access to the lot. Whereas fans were formerly quickly waived through line with parking passes attached to the mirror, now every car will be stopped to either have its parking pass scanned or to pay the $30 parking fee. Sounds simple enough but we all know that about 20% of drivers will be confused by the simplicity of the instructions and feel compelled to have long drawn out conversations with the parking attendants thereby blocking everybody else.
