  1. The far better story is why was this property so special and what made it available to be turned into a park in 1890. The three ponds on the property were fed by natural springs. This high water table was why the Fouts Field stadium could not have the track removed and the stadium dug deeper into a bowl configuration. These were the western most springs in the entire region, on the border of woods to the east and bison laden grasslands to the west, and a coveted source of fresh water for the Wichita Tribe which had a permanent settlement for at least the last several hundred years. By the 1870's barbed wire cut off the bison migration routes, and by the 1880's unregulated water drilling and drought had lowered the water table to the point where the springs often stopped flowing. The Wichita Tribe which had peacefully coexisted with European settlers soon departed for other regions to the north and west. Their land was kept for them surrounded by developers claims, and was eventually turned into Highland Park.
  2. Did you know that Highland Park existed from 1890 until 1933 when the City of Denton sold the property to The University of North Texas (then North Texas State Teacher's College) to build a golf course? Land developers in Dallas renamed their Philadelphia Place community after Denton's popular Highland Park in 1906. (there were some parks in their development, but they were all in lower areas along the Turtle Creek) Denton dismantled the streetcar (trolly) lines from downtown to Highland Park in 1918 to contribute the steel to the war effort. Visitation to the park declined greatly in 1927 with the construction of Lake Dallas southeast of Denton, making Highland Park expendable for the city. The only remnant of the name is Highland Park Drive which ran along the south side of the park. Highland Park has since been converted from a golf course into the Athletic Village at The University of North Texas and tailgating parties and football games take place on the Highland Park hill every football season.
  3. Are you suggesting it's not possible? Me saying that something is not going to happen does not mean that something is not going to happen. (Only my bride can do that)
  4. I am for anything that adds fun to the gameday atmosphere. I wish they would have postgame concerts, especially classic rock groups like the ones that appear at regional festivals; REO Speedwagon, Huey Lewis & News, Gin Bloosoms, Poison, Loverboy etc... That stuff is campy and certainly dated, but still a whole lot of fun.
  5. You should have waited a second for the picture...North Texas scored again on the next play.
  6. SMU has already made a passionate plea for help to the Republican Party. Unfortunately for them it was received with somewhat indifference. Here's a record of the conversation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQLtz_871EE .
  7. SMU midfield is at the 35, so a 70 yard playing field (close to half size) plus end zones. At least they are all air conditioned, well all except UTSA. For some reason the people at that school are opposed to building walls.
  8. Wow, what a beautiful facility. So, just North Texas and Houston have indoor practice fields inside solid structures? Texas has an inflatable structure and ATM has cloth, and aren't all the other indoor practice facilities (TCU, Tech, Baylor) short or partial fields? Isn't SMU building a tiny half field facility?
  9. Google shows only an 8 minute walk from Mockingbird Station to Ford Stadium. Not far, but it's also forecast to be a very hot afternoon. .
  10. Google Maps says they're about 60 feet apart.
  11. I don't know how old he is, but Nate does his research and is usually fairly accurate in his assessments. I did not read much that I could disagree with.
  12. They come out of the Denia neighborhood during every game and steal anything they can. To quote Newt, "They mostly come out at night, ... mostly".
  13. But that was before Smoo put in the Douche Deck to cover up thousands of those perpetually empty end zone seats. It sounds like many of you have purchased tickets abutting this garbage. Smoo claims that Ford Stadium seats 30K but around 15% of the seats are either covered by, or have sight lines obstructed by this trash. http://www.fox4news.com/sports/colleges/massive-party-deck-to-be-new-student-section-at-smu-football-games
  14. SMU has Kathy Bates and Needle Nose Ned. nothing else
  15. or Michael Lee Aday, better known professionally as Meat Loaf, having sold over 80 million albums is one of the top selling artists of all time. or actress Ann Sheridan, former North Texas basketball player that was the model of perfection used for the majority of bomber nose art in WWII. Notable roles include San Quentin (1937) with Pat O'Brien and Humphrey Bogart, Angels with Dirty Faces(1938) with James Cagney and Bogart, They Drive by Night (1940) with George Raft and Bogart, The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942), Kings Row (1942) with Ronald Reagan, Nora Prentiss (1947), and I Was a Male War Bride (1949) with Cary Grant. or Michael Martin Murphy's high school classmate and former bandmate Ray Wylie Hubbard who has sold millions of albums and including the hit Up Against The Wall, Redneck Mother or award winning actor and documentary producer Peter Weller or recent Oscar nominee Thomas Hayden Church
  16. That would have been Lamar.
  17. Don't let the final score fool you, it was 31-0 before ACU even crossed midfield. Not saying that ACU didn't play well or didn't keep it entertaining in the second half, but the final result had already been determined.
  18. It was Manny and his rasslin fan friend Nacho Libre. I seriously doubt anybody else came just because of the rasslin match.
  19. I haven't seen the guest list, but I bet it would include Jason Pertle after the monster game that garnered him CUSA Offensive Player of the Week.
  20. A&M played at Michigan several decades ago and did not bring their band. The Michigan band formed the outline of Texas with the ATM in the middle and enthusiastically played the Aggie fight song. It was pure greatness as a sign of respect between two incredible schools. I would love for the Brigade to play the visitors Alma Mater pregame to the visitors section when they don't bring their band. It's a lot of music to learn, but it does make an impression on our guests. (then we can scare the hell out of them with the cannon blast) 😉
  21. There are some North Texas side tickets for sale for fairly cheap on: https://www.markstickets.com/tickets/gerald-j-ford-stadium/t3891296/southern-methodist-smu-mustangs-vs-north-texas-mean-green-tickets
  22. for Evan, Tensile Ten One of the striking visual elements in the union was the fiber art that hung on the wall in the main indoor courtyard. The work, Tensile Ten, was the creation of artist Francoise Grossen. It combined over 1,500 pounds of rope. The sculpture was built using one over hand knot as the only structural element to create the 30 feet by 16 foot fiber work. It was named Tensile Ten because there were five points at the top and five at the bottom where the artwork was attached to the wall of the Union.
  23. Loved the Brigade on Saturday, great performance all day.
  24. “Hey, I know we're all in strung out shape but stay frosty and alert.” Stay Frosty my Friend. The all white uniforms are greatness. .
