  1. The "too many fans for standing room" is what pushed North Texas to build what would eventually be named Fouts Field. Unfortunately the new stadium was built, per AD Fouts, to be a track configuration which could also be used for football. This horrible decision was incredibly detrimental to the football program. It was incredibly hard to sell out the stadium due to it's incredibly bad sight lines, and the negative ninnies would say for the next 60 years " why fix the stadium situation if we're not selling out what we currently have". These ninnies almost killed off North Texas football and they continue today by opposing expanding necessary functional seating at Apogee.
  2. I appreciate what Austin has done for us. We needed him much more than he needed college football. He came in every year and beat out every wonderboy / super athlete that we've recruited to take his place, yet he supported them and encouraged them every time they were in a game. Like all our players, he risks his health and wellbeing every time he steps on that field, and he has never once complained or shown contempt for the school, fans, or football program. He was always the person that rushed to congratulate players that made outstanding plays and encouraged the ones that were having rough days to perform their best. I saw very little of this interaction from his head coach. I hope for the best for him in whatever he does, and I look forward to the day when he is inducted into our Hall of Fame. He has always been a class act and I predict he is going to be an outstanding leader in our letterman's program. And if perchance he reads this, Thank You Austin. .
  3. The short story: My mother's family was instrumental in the founding of the college in the 1830's (University of Louisiana back then) her family was multi generational Law graduates with a family ancestor's portrait hanging in the University President's office, on my father's side, my gg and g-grandfather were Tulane Med as well as my grandfather who met my grandmother on the steps of Gibson Hall. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces are all Tulane grads. Cousin played on the 73 Bluebonnet Bowl team and all the buses brought all the Tulane booster club from the old Shamrock Hotel to our house in Houston Memorial for the big party the night before the game. And, I am best friends with Paul Tulane's only known descendant, Paul Tulane _______ IV, though originally illegitimate at birth, retained Paul's instructions (now with TU) on how he wanted his son raised and generously provided to take him through Emory Med and well fund a practice in Houston. And also, my daughter put Tulane as her top choice for early acceptance when she became a full National Merit Scholarship recipient and is currently pre-med at Tulane. I grew up involved with Tulane, and still stay as involved with New Orleans as much as possible. Family has 7 krewe spots in Bacchus, so I'm there every year for Mardi Gras and have even ridden a couple times.
  4. This Cotton Bowl victory by Tulane really raised the stature of next year's AAC.
  5. I have sat through decades of really bad football at Tulane games. That makes this victory so sweet.
  6. Tulane has put up one hell of a fight against the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and his team that was predicted to contend for a national championship. 35-30 in the 4th quarter, I would love to be that competitive. USC may very well pull away in the end, but Tulane sure put up a fight.
  7. Odus Mitchell was hired, with no players on the team, six days before North Texas was scheduled to play at Texas A&M. The Aggies were incredibly deep with all the players that had returned the previous year from WWII. Odus had to recruit players from campus to create his offense and defense. Unfortunately there was really no time to spend on special teams. The Aggies dominated, mostly on the back of 339 punt return yards, an NCAA record which will probably never be broken. To take that rag-tag team to become conference champions his first two years is one of the best football stories of this past century.
  8. And our own Ashley Pickle is the Master of Ceremonies on the huge screen.
  9. I'm at the game right now and wearing my Green. It's a sea of blue and green on one side and a sea of red and yellow on the other. Pageantry builds unity, unity brings loyalty, loyalty makes your future. Sometimes you've got to say "What the f, why would we EVER wear gray or black".
  10. Actually that was only 9 years ago today. What happened to all that fan spirit? People cared. Where has all the Green gone?
  11. In its second season since rekindling North Texas football under head coach Odus Mitchell, the team compiled a 10–2 record (6–0 against LSC opponents), beat Florida in Gainesville, won the LSC championship, and lost only to Arkansas in Fayetteville and to Nevada in the 1948 Salad Bowl. The 1948 Salad Bowl was a postseason American college football bowl game between the Nevada Wolf Pack and the North Texas State Eagles at Montgomery Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 1, 1948. The game marked the first bowl game for Nevada and the second in a row for North Texas. It was the 1st edition of the annual Salad Bowl. North Texas represented the Lone Star Conference in the contest, while Nevada competed as an Independent. In a defensive struggle, Nevada would earn their first bowl win with a 13–6 victory. The site of the game was Montgomery Stadium in Phoenix. The Eagles entered their second bowl game with a 10–1 record and the Lone Star Conference championship in hand. The 1947 team was dominant, holding 5 opponents scoreless and 10 to a touchdown or less. The Eagles' lone loss was a 12–0 defeat against Arkansas in Little Rock which was followed by a victory in Gainesville against Florida. The Nevada Wolf Pack also entered its first bowl game with an 8–2 record. The Wolfpack was led by All-American and Heisman Finalist Stan Heath. Nevada originally accepted its invitation to the salad bowl however, weeks prior to the game, the team cowardly voted not to participate in the game. Nevada ultimately attended after the threat of lawsuit. North Texas scored first before Nevada added a pair of touchdowns, with the second one coming late in the fourth quarter. A missed extra point kept North Texas within a touchdown, but a final drive stalled at the Nevada 28 when a likely game–winning score was dropped in the end zone. All players received a wristwatch after the game as a token of appreciation. .
  12. There's still the Family Hardship Waiver where players don't have to sit out a year if they transfer closer to home due to a family illness?
  13. I think he'll be back.
  14. I don't think it was feasible to retain both for next year. Neither would be content to get stuck standing on the sideline. SMU's coach probably had to decide which would be best for the longterm success of the program.
  15. They've ditched the nasty-ass black uniforms because they're so damn unattractive, but they've retained what they call their "Smokey Mountain Gray" uniforms for a certain game each year. If our school colors and branding ever become as recognizable as Tennessee's, and we sell out a 107K seat stadium every week, then maybe we too can monkey with them and do stupid things. Until then, let's be the Mean Green.
  16. Wow, coaches and teams actually wearing their school colors. That must be nice. I wonder if our athletic staff and teams can be tought to do this.
  17. Can Seth truly leave? I don't think he ever located that contact lens that was lost somewhere along the sideline.
  18. The younger ref has made several screwy calls.
  19. We HAVE a correct green, Pantone 356. It's Kelly Green, also known as Irish Green, the exact same shade of Green that Nike uses for all Marshall and Oregon uniforms and staffing gear. (Our staff likes to pretend that Nike doesn't make it) Neon Green is also approved for "alternate" uniform colors per documentation approved by our Board of Regents, brown, gray, lavender, and black are not.
  20. Five seconds of research would have enabled them to get the colors correct. Voertman's puts zero effort into our products, and they are almost never GREEN.
  21. Z O ? Wishful thinking, but damn it would be great.
  22. ESPN only uses our logo when it is placed next to the name NORTH TEXAS. Why on Earth would we want UNT North Texas paired with an ultra-tiny diving eagle logo? It's even worse on phones. Again, it's pure laziness by our staff. You'd think that with 750 associate athletic directors, at least one would view ESPN and notice the issue. Everybody else has their school logo, we have a tiny green smudge with UNT next to North Texas.
  23. Part of the problem is that "North Texas" is not always used as a proper noun. Many media outlets refer to us as "N Texas" without any retaliation from our athletics department. Call SMU "S Methodist" on ESPN and they will be hearing from the school immediately to get it corrected. Hell, we haven't even notified ESPN to stop using the microscopic diving eagle with North Texas logo directly next to where our school is listed as North Texas. That's been going on for several seasons. Teensie Tiny Logo Please SOMEBODY in the athletics department send them the regular sized diving eagle logo before next football season.
  24. Well, .............there's not even a noun in our team name, but it's what we've got. Let's make the most of it. If we are going to be Mean Green, then we sure as hell better be outfitted in Green. Not just wearing Green, but totally ensconcing ourselves in Green. It's time for all our sports to get rid of all the gray and black substitutes for uniforms, get the Brigade to stop playing Paint it Black, and separate from everything else that is so obviously detrimental to our branding.
