  1. So we should build our program by drawing small crowds and complaining instead of scheduling events at the optimum time? Interesting theory, how'd it work for Craig Helwig?
  2. It's not going to happen. If we had wanted a good crowd we would have scheduled the game in the evening. Less than 15% capacity is expected. *disclaimer - this is not a cue for some dope to reply that Indiana or Kentucky can fill their arenas at 4:00AM, on any holiday, or any combination of both.
  3. Guys, the Craig James thing is a joke. They're just letting off a little steam after missing on their initial target. I believe Paul Johnson would have been outstanding for SMU, but I also think there are several other excellent candidates that can be successful there. Craig is not one of them.
  4. Timmy Mac blg on DMN site jabs at SMU. nancyboys on Ponyfans site in bitching tizzy. Ponyfans whinefest Oh, and by the way: newsflash
  5. Duke, Georgia Tech, SMU, or stay at Navy? The soap opera that is the four way tug-a-war for Paul Johnson's services can be followed at: Navy Sports Blog As jtstang so eloquently stated on the SMU board, "If anybody can win a Johnson-pulling contest, it's SMU."
  6. Basketball Radio Shows Begin Tonight At Sweetwater DENTON, Texas (12/03/07) – Don’t forget to catch the season’s first Tina Slinker and Johnny Jones radio shows on 88.1 KNTU-FM tonight from Sweetwater starting at 6:30 p.m. Join Steven Bartolotta and coach Slinker as they discuss Mean Green women's basketball from 6:30 until 7:00 pm. The North Texas women’s squad hosts Marshall tomorrow night at the Super Pit following a tough loss to Metroplex rival SMU over the weekend. The Mean Green men are coming off a sweep at the Lou Henson Classic that included one of the biggest comebacks in school history against New Mexico State. The Mean Green takes on the University of Texas on Wednesday night, and you can hear Hank Dickenson and coach Jones from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m.
  7. I thought that he was announcing that Appology (the study of apples; history, varieties and derived products) may be getting added to the curriculum. To appologize would be to speak at length emphatically on behalf of those apples. I am not sure why all those that he may have insulted in his defense of Coach Mendoza would be interested in this topic, but I am sure he has his reasons.
  8. just keeping up with developments affecting former North Texas personel Gary DeLoach begins his fifth season at UCLA after joining the Bruin staff in January of 2003. This will be his second season concentrating on the safeties. In addition, he will also be in charge of the special teams in 2007. In his first two seasons, DeLoach coached both the safeties and cornerbacks. In 2005, he focused on working with the cornerbacks while supervising the overall defensive secondary. Last year, the starting safeties enjoyed outstanding seasons. Chris Horton, in his first full season without injury, led the team with 95 tackles (ninth in the Pac-10) at his strong safety position while adding two picks and two forced fumbles. Free safety Dennis Keyes ranked third on the team with 79 tackles. In 2005, senior cornerback Marcus Cassel finished third on the team in tackles with 59 stops. Cornerback Trey Brown continued to develop his game at the other cornerback slot and added 53 tackles and 10 pass defenses. In 2004, cornerback Matt Clark earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors and led the team with 11 pass breakups. In 2003, the Bruins led the Pac-10 in pass defense, giving up just 200.7 yards a game through the air and allowing a conference-low 15 TD passes. Prior to coming to Westwood, DeLoach served as defensive coordinator for three years at the University of North Texas and was the secondary coach for five seasons. During the 2002 regular season, the Mean Green of North Texas led the Sun Belt Conference in total defense, rushing defense, passing defense and scoring defense. Nationally, North Texas was third in scoring defense (14.8 points), ninth in total defense (290.6 yards), 12th in passing defense (171.7) and 26th in rushing defense (118.9). The Mean Green allowed over 310 yards total offense just three times all year. In its 24-19 victory over Conference USA champion Cincinnati in the New Orleans Bowl, North Texas allowed just 309 yards of offense and intercepted five passes. In addition, six North Texas defenders were selected first-team All-Sun Belt Conference that season, including defensive backs Don McGee and Craig Jones. In his five years as the secondary coach, six different defensive backs earned first team all-conference. In 2001, Jonas Buckles earned first-team all-conference honors after ranking fifth nationally and first in the Sun Belt Conference in interceptions. He was a second-team all-league pick in 2002. Under DeLoach's direction, the Mean Green ranked at or near the top of the conference in several defensive categories each year. In 2001, the Mean Green defense led the Sun Belt in rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense. DeLoach, a 1972 graduate of Sam Houston High School in Houston, went to North Texas in 1998 after serving as defensive coordinator for national JUCO champion Trinity Valley of Athens, TX and coaching in the World League with the Frankfurt Galaxy in 1997. At Frankfurt, he worked under Coach Ernie Stautner, former longtime defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys (1969-89). DeLoach, 53, previously worked as an assistant coach at New Mexico State for seven years (1990-96), spent three seasons at Texas A&M (1980-82) and seven years at Stephen F. Austin (1983-89) in Nacogdoches, TX. He began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant and then part-time assistant at Stephen F. Austin (1976-78). He was also defensive coordinator at Spring Branch High School in 1979. He served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Stephen F. Austin from 1983 to 1989. The Lumberjacks made NCAA I-AA playoff appearances in 1988 and 1989, won the Gulf Star Conference title in 1985, the Southland Conference title in 1989 and advanced to the NCAA I-AA championship game in 1989. He was secondary coach during his tenure at Texas A&M. The Aggies made an appearance in the 1981 Independence Bowl, defeating Oklahoma State 33-16. While at New Mexico State, he served as defensive coordinator from 1990 to 1994. The 1992 Aggie squad posted the school's first winning season in 15 years. DeLoach is a 1976 graduate of Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX. RECRUITING RESPONSIBILITIES -- Local / California: Central California; National: Texas, Nevada (Reno) and defensive backs. PERSONAL -- Education: Bachelor's, Howard Payne, 1976; At UCLA: Fifth year (joined staff in January of 2003); Born: June 22, 1954 in Houston, TX
  9. FAU will go to the New Orleans Bowl. The Sun Belt can pick a "co-champion" now if the regular champion doesn't have at least 6 wins. If the rule was in place in 2001 runner up Middle Tennessee would have gone to the bowl. It's going to be a risk for North Texas as long as we continue to sell numerous non-conference victories to schools that don't play return games; schools with dignity don't do that.
  10. 38 - 19 Final
  11. Excuse me, my phone's ringing.
  12. "Defense getting shredded tonight by FIU" - George Dunham. There's a phrase you don't hear too often. FIU has scored more points this 3rd quarter than every other 3rd this year combined. Oh, and they're about to score again. FG.
  13. Interception to UNT 37 on first play. FIU can go up 35 to 12
  14. true. true. TD FIU 28 to 12 Yes, we know it's raining, but it's raining on both teams. There is no excuse.
  15. The Sun Belt would be wise to start a long term plan to add Texas State and Missouri State (formerly Southwest Missouri). Both are large schools with excellent potential that fit well into the Belt geography. That would give the Belt eleven teams. Get UNO to add football (or add a different school) and the Belt sits at 12 and can split into East and West divisions. Travel for fans will be so much easier, and scheduling regional non-conference games also would become easier. The Sun Belt needs to just keep continue adding big state schools. By 2014, UNT and TSU will have the third and fourth largest enrollments in Texas, ULL is already second largest in Louisiana as are Arkansas State, Missouri State, and Middle Tennessee in their respective states. The enrollment at the two Florida schools is booming and they are both already in the 30K range. Bigger schools eventually bring better television contracts. Thirty years ago Florida State was very small-time and ECU, UCF, and USF were relatively unknown schools. Times are changing; just look what the past six years has done for North Texas and imagine how quickly things are going to improve one the new stadium gets built.
  16. I think this is an outstanding hire for the ponies. My little cousin who was a member of Johnson's first Navy signing class and graduated in May has had nothing but good things to say about Coach Johnson.
  17. Well, all I can say for him is that Guy now has a lot of idiotic statements to go along with his history of idiotic decisions. Oh, and other than his on-field futility and having his ass about to be canned, isn't Utah State about to pe placed on NCAA probation for not making minimum attendance requirements? Wow, that eliminates them from post-season eligibilty for several years (like that really matters for USU) but it also eventually forces their program back into the 1AA ranks. The SKY is now starting to look pretty darn BIG in Logan. This rant couldn't have been more entertaining unless his OC had felt the need to repeat his infamous "Division from Within" speech or an announcement that former USU AD Rance Pugmire had rolled another vehicle. These jackasses have created their own hell; let them stew in it. Hey Guy! Wait, I can't stop! Dislike the Sun Belt? The Sun Belt rescued USU when the WAC was trying it's hardest to kill it. Wright Waters should never have stooped to help those turds.
  18. There's a potential bargain on ebay if somebody is able to make it to Austin on a Wednesday night. $10 shipping, but .99 minimum bid with no reserve. North Texas tickets on ebay *note - if you were to win the auction, I think it would be unwise to tell the idiot selling them that you are a North Texas fan, or to have the tickets sent to a Denton address.
  19. ... ... ...
  20. I may be wrong, but I thought they've only had one winning season in that span.
  21. Please put down the hemlock. This was a total rebuilding year in every aspect. The team will be much better in coming years.
  22. Man, I didn't even look that far down. They are sandwiched between schools like Longwood and Sacred Heart that I never even knew played sports. Something called USC Upstate is dead last in the country; I am suprised SMU hasn't tried to schedule them. .
  23. A few ratings of note (regional and SBC top 200 teams): 22 Texas = 85.99 29 Texas A&M = 85.31 57 Western Kentucky = 81.71 68 Texas-Arlington = 80.45 73 Oklahoma State = 80.04 88 Houston = 78.71 95 Texas Tech = 78.10 96 North Texas = 78.06 104 New Orleans = 77.48 117 South Alabama = 76.48 124 Sam Houston State = 75.99 143 TCU = 74.41 157 Ark.-Little Rock = 73.62 184 Indiana State = 71.29 188 Troy = 71.24 192 Tulsa = 71.01 This week's Sagarin Ratings The ratings system certainly doesn't view UTA as a cupcake, and playing at home you'd expect them to probably be favored in the game against North Texas. Western Kentucky, as expected, has the strongest rating for SBC teams at this point in the season. Perhaps there is a glitch in the Sagarin Rating system, but I couldn't find SMU listed.
  24. Thanks for the history lesson GoUTA, but I can also realize how so many people have trouble understanding what's written on your website. hint: it would be easier if it were written in English.
  25. I concur. UTA didn't have as talented a team as North Texas (at least during the rest of the season), but they put together an excellent gameplan that caught an ill-prepared North Texas off guard. UTA pounded the ball inside drawing many penalties against the Green. By the end of the game UTA held an advantage of something like 30 free throws to 7 and was able to claim victory after the disputed last second shot. Hats off to UTA, they planned well, played well, and they won. I think their coach did an outstanding job (even though I miss the antics of Mr. UTA himself, Bob “Snake” LeGrand)
