  1. Well, I guess that makes SMU the Metroplex Champions in basketball.  SMU > TCU > UTA > UNT That is why I love these Metroplex rivalry games; each game resulted in an upset with the winning team jumping up and down in celebration. Not only should all these teams play each other every year, they should all play each other TWICE every year. The rivalry wouldn't only be big for the schools involved but would be great for college basketball in the D/FW region. It could instantly add a big time atmosphere to the usually mundane nonconference games. Let visiting students in free with student ID, have pep bands from both schools there, include the 'away' games as part of season ticket packages........The games would be a great recruiting tool and would be a magnet for local media. The would also help generate a stronger following at each school. The Tobacco Road rivalry was not created by those three schools not playing each other. Or, we can continue to play virtually unknown schools and watch the Big 12 get all the attention in our (all four) home market.
  2. Possibly a required viewing? Organization of Defensive Coverages & Three Types of Coverages with Gary DeLoach, UCLA Assistant Football Coach / Safeties The UCLA run defense ranked 9th in the nation in 2006, finishing over 100 spots higher than the year before. Coach DeLoach presents an inside look at how that impressive change came about. A main principle to the UCLA defense is to secure the perimeter of the defense. By putting the Sam back in the force position on the tight end side is key to starting your defense. Safeties are lined up 10 yards deep and their technique is flat foot read. A main focus is reading the backs to determine the play entry and blocking schemes. Reading this triangle is important for the linebackers and the safeties. DeLoach presents his alley rules for safeties. Force is the number one thing in the alley, meaning the run is turned back in by the first man on the play. The safety should never have a run/pass conflict. DeLoach also includes passing tools for the safties to use that help them in the run game. Using game footage, DeLoach effectively illustrates different coverages. 102 minutes. 2007. or better yet, make it a double feature paired with: Zone Coverages for the 4-3 Defense with Gary DeLoach, UCLA Secondary Coach Coach Gary DeLoach has over 25 successful years of experience coaching football at the HS, JUCO, DI-AA, and DI levels. In his first season at UCLA, the Bruin secondary allowed just 15 touchdown passes (#1 in Pac-10) over 13 games and led the Pac-10 in pass defense giving up just 200.7 yards per game through the air. In this DVD, you will learn the basic principles of zone and man pass defense. DeLoach highlights the four key principles in zone and man defense that he has taught throughout his career: Defending the field, breaking on the ball, rushing the passer, and defending deep to short. DeLoach emphasizes playing primarily zone or man defense and using the other as a "change of pace" defense. In this presentation, he will show you how to hide your coverages by playing pre-snap defense and making proper reads. Using game footage, DeLoach provides instruction for 2-deep zone, 3-deep zone, halves, quarters, press man, and off man coverages. He also includes reads and reactions versus the run. 54 minutes. 2005. click here to purchase Defensive Systems videos
  3. That is why scientist do this thing called research; that way they can quickly eliminate elves, gnomes, angels, vampires, unicorns, Jedi warriors, and Great Pumkins form the equation. There is no scientific evidence to support these entities, that is why they are referred to as faith based. There is absolutely nothing wrong with believing in what may or not be fictional characters. This is America and you are pretty much allowed to believe in anything as long as you're not violating any laws and keep current with your taxes. This doesn't mean that your particular beliefs should be imposed on anyone else, not on someone elses children, and possibly not even on your own.
  4. I think that we should teach intelligent design in our schools. That way, in case anyone disagrees with us, we can justify flying planes into their buildings.
  5. I wish we played UTA, SMU, and TCU twice each every season much like NMSU plays UTEP and UNM in nonconference games twice each season. It would be great for the fans, would sell tickets for the athletic departments, would ease the travel burden on student athletes, and would garner some metroplex media attention for the schools involved. That said, which schools do you think would fear such an arrangement?
  6. Of course I didn't like losing to anyone, but I am very happy for UTA and the success that they are having this season. Hopefully the renewed interest will expedite their building of a new on-campus arena.
  7. And it's good that he already likes UnderArmour gear. He's going to be wearing quite a bit of it for the next 5 years.
  8. Joining the WAC right now would be like buying a ticket on the Titanic right before it hit the iceberg. The WAC is composed of 4 higher profile schools (Boise St, Hawaii, Fresno St, and Nevada) and 5 schools that garner very little fan interest. Three of the four higher profile teams, Boise Fresno and Hawaii, have been campaigning for MWC membership while Hawaii has publicly contemplated the benefits of going independant. If these moves were to happen after North Texas jumped to the WAC, not only would we have screwed the Sun Belt , but would have done it to join the dregs of the WAC in a doomed conference.
  9. This may be an ArkStfan type of question, but I'll toss it out to the masses. What happens to the schools that repetitively fall below the mandated 15,000 attendance plateau? There are NCAA regulations which will eventually force them down to the division formerly known as 1AA. What's the timeframe for probation and demotion? What happens to the conference(s) that fall below the 8 required Division 1 members. While it's nothing to brag about, it's nice to see that the Sun Belt only has one team on that list. 11. MBB Falls at North Texas Despite School Record 17 Three-Pointers Courtesy: Hartford Sports Information Release: 12/08/2007 DENTON, TX – The University of Hartford men’s basketball team lost to the University of North Texas, 105-97, in a shootout on Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit. Hartford (4-6 overall) broke the school record with 17 three-pointers in the contest, though it wasn’t enough to overcome 60 percent shooting by North Texas (6-2 overall). The Mean Green also shot 61 percent (14 of 23) from three-point range and 86 percent (31 of 36) from the free throw line. Junior Warren McLendon and sophomore Joe Zeglinski each finished with 24 points apiece for the Hawks, tying a season high for the former and a career high for the latter. Zeglinski went 6 of 10 from three-point range while McLendon pulled down eight rebounds and shot 9 of 13 from the free throw line. Freshman Morgan Sabia also finished in double figures with 12 points, all from beyond the arc. “North Texas is a very good basketball team, and they made the plays at the end that they needed to win the game,” said head coach Dan Leibovitz. “There are a number of positives we can take away from this game, but now we have to get back to work and get better as a unit.” Hartford finished with a season-high 21 assists and a season-low 11 turnovers. The Hawks, who made 10 three-pointers in the first half, eclipsed the old record of 12 on a trey by Sabia five minutes into the second stanza. Josh White led five players in double figures for North Texas with 24 points. Ben Bell and Tristan Thompson pitched in with 23 and 18, respectively. Hartford opened the second half with a 47-45 lead but quickly fell behind when North Texas scored nine of the stanza’s first 10 points. The Hawks answered with eight straight points and took the lead back on a three-pointer by Sabia at the 16:10 mark. The lead flip-flopped several times and neither team led by more than three until Thompson made a pair of free throws to give the Mean Green a 76-71 edge with 9:31 remaining. North Texas increased the margin to nine (82-73) before the Hawks made another charge. Hartford used a 14-4 run over a four-minute stretch to shift the momentum, pulling ahead 87-86 on a pair of McLendon free throws with 4:34 to play. Senior Brian Glowiak hit a pair of three-pointers during the run while McLendon added four from the charity stripe. The teams traded the lead on ensuing three-point shots, though North Texas took the lead for good on a bucket by Bell that made it 91-90 with 3:25 to go. The Mean Green outscored the Hawks 16-7 in the final 3:25 and missed only one of 12 free throw attempts. Hartford returns home to host Monmouth on Tuesday, December 11 at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion. 12. So we should build our program by drawing small crowds and complaining instead of scheduling events at the optimum time? Interesting theory, how'd it work for Craig Helwig?
  13. It's not going to happen. If we had wanted a good crowd we would have scheduled the game in the evening. Less than 15% capacity is expected. *disclaimer - this is not a cue for some dope to reply that Indiana or Kentucky can fill their arenas at 4:00AM, on any holiday, or any combination of both.
  14. Guys, the Craig James thing is a joke. They're just letting off a little steam after missing on their initial target. I believe Paul Johnson would have been outstanding for SMU, but I also think there are several other excellent candidates that can be successful there. Craig is not one of them.

  18. I thought that he was announcing that Appology (the study of apples; history, varieties and derived products) may be getting added to the curriculum. To appologize would be to speak at length emphatically on behalf of those apples. I am not sure why all those that he may have insulted in his defense of Coach Mendoza would be interested in this topic, but I am sure he has his reasons.
  19. just keeping up with developments affecting former North Texas personel Gary DeLoach begins his fifth season at UCLA after joining the Bruin staff in January of 2003. This will be his second season concentrating on the safeties. In addition, he will also be in charge of the special teams in 2007. In his first two seasons, DeLoach coached both the safeties and cornerbacks. In 2005, he focused on working with the cornerbacks while supervising the overall defensive secondary. Last year, the starting safeties enjoyed outstanding seasons. Chris Horton, in his first full season without injury, led the team with 95 tackles (ninth in the Pac-10) at his strong safety position while adding two picks and two forced fumbles. Free safety Dennis Keyes ranked third on the team with 79 tackles. In 2005, senior cornerback Marcus Cassel finished third on the team in tackles with 59 stops. Cornerback Trey Brown continued to develop his game at the other cornerback slot and added 53 tackles and 10 pass defenses. In 2004, cornerback Matt Clark earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors and led the team with 11 pass breakups. In 2003, the Bruins led the Pac-10 in pass defense, giving up just 200.7 yards a game through the air and allowing a conference-low 15 TD passes. Prior to coming to Westwood, DeLoach served as defensive coordinator for three years at the University of North Texas and was the secondary coach for five seasons. During the 2002 regular season, the Mean Green of North Texas led the Sun Belt Conference in total defense, rushing defense, passing defense and scoring defense. Nationally, North Texas was third in scoring defense (14.8 points), ninth in total defense (290.6 yards), 12th in passing defense (171.7) and 26th in rushing defense (118.9). The Mean Green allowed over 310 yards total offense just three times all year. In its 24-19 victory over Conference USA champion Cincinnati in the New Orleans Bowl, North Texas allowed just 309 yards of offense and intercepted five passes. In addition, six North Texas defenders were selected first-team All-Sun Belt Conference that season, including defensive backs Don McGee and Craig Jones. In his five years as the secondary coach, six different defensive backs earned first team all-conference. In 2001, Jonas Buckles earned first-team all-conference honors after ranking fifth nationally and first in the Sun Belt Conference in interceptions. He was a second-team all-league pick in 2002. Under DeLoach's direction, the Mean Green ranked at or near the top of the conference in several defensive categories each year. In 2001, the Mean Green defense led the Sun Belt in rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense. DeLoach, a 1972 graduate of Sam Houston High School in Houston, went to North Texas in 1998 after serving as defensive coordinator for national JUCO champion Trinity Valley of Athens, TX and coaching in the World League with the Frankfurt Galaxy in 1997. At Frankfurt, he worked under Coach Ernie Stautner, former longtime defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys (1969-89). DeLoach, 53, previously worked as an assistant coach at New Mexico State for seven years (1990-96), spent three seasons at Texas A&M (1980-82) and seven years at Stephen F. Austin (1983-89) in Nacogdoches, TX. He began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant and then part-time assistant at Stephen F. Austin (1976-78). He was also defensive coordinator at Spring Branch High School in 1979. He served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Stephen F. Austin from 1983 to 1989. The Lumberjacks made NCAA I-AA playoff appearances in 1988 and 1989, won the Gulf Star Conference title in 1985, the Southland Conference title in 1989 and advanced to the NCAA I-AA championship game in 1989. He was secondary coach during his tenure at Texas A&M. The Aggies made an appearance in the 1981 Independence Bowl, defeating Oklahoma State 33-16. While at New Mexico State, he served as defensive coordinator from 1990 to 1994. The 1992 Aggie squad posted the school's first winning season in 15 years. DeLoach is a 1976 graduate of Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX. RECRUITING RESPONSIBILITIES -- Local / California: Central California; National: Texas, Nevada (Reno) and defensive backs. PERSONAL -- Education: Bachelor's, Howard Payne, 1976; At UCLA: Fifth year (joined staff in January of 2003); Born: June 22, 1954 in Houston, TX
  20. FAU will go to the New Orleans Bowl. The Sun Belt can pick a "co-champion" now if the regular champion doesn't have at least 6 wins. If the rule was in place in 2001 runner up Middle Tennessee would have gone to the bowl. It's going to be a risk for North Texas as long as we continue to sell numerous non-conference victories to schools that don't play return games; schools with dignity don't do that.
  21. 38 - 19 Final
  22. Excuse me, my phone's ringing.
  23. "Defense getting shredded tonight by FIU" - George Dunham. There's a phrase you don't hear too often. FIU has scored more points this 3rd quarter than every other 3rd this year combined. Oh, and they're about to score again. FG.
  24. Interception to UNT 37 on first play. FIU can go up 35 to 12
  25. true. true. TD FIU 28 to 12 Yes, we know it's raining, but it's raining on both teams. There is no excuse.
