To put their growth in perspective, Hayden Fry was the coach at North Texas when UTSA was created. It is growing at an incredible rate and it's athletic program is receiving an awful lot of money from the city and county to build facilities. (Projected to be in the $50 million range by 2012.) Although I view UTSA as competition, I think of them (and Texas State) as being more of an opportunity than as a threat for North Texas. As they grow their programs, these could become some of the in-state rivals that we have been sorely lacking.
-
Please excuse me, but your figures are way off. UTSA has 29,000 students, North Texas has 32,500 on it's Denton campus. The UTSA student athletic fees are $240 per semester. (not the $250 reported) The maximum at North Texas will be $150 per semester, and that's not until the 2011-2012 school year. The modest North Texas fee increase will primarily go towards paying for a stadium, UTSA is expected to have free use of the Alamo Dome. That is a gigantic difference in remaining operating budgets. And all that is before factoring the enormous amount of money that San Antonio / Bexar County have committed to putting into UTSA athletics. Denton, city and county, don't give North Texas anything.
-
Wow, you would think they would have a better picture of associate athletic director Brad Parrott. He looks like he's taking it in the tail.
-
And....why not use that property to build establishments that will further enhance the university? Why not give a sweetheart lease to build a Stars Center? There's one about every 10 miles going up the Highway 121 corridor but not a single one in Denton County.

That's the whole point. Bonnie Brea already crosses the railroad track, just on the southern side of the Mean Green Village. Reroute it so it crosses the railroad track NORTH of the Mean Green Village and runs on the other side of the railroad tracks behind the baseball, softball, and soccer facilities. That frontage property over there is otherwise landlocked because no entrance or exit ramps can be put there for a frontage road. If the athletic department were to own that property, it could garner additional revenue by controlling the commercial contracts of any restaurants. Remeber, there is going to be a HUGE office/warehouse complex built accross I-35W in the near future. Plan now with infrastructure to profit later.
-
This could be to our benefit. Imagine that the drainage was rerouted to the lower area between the railroad tracks and I-35W, and Bonnie Brea was then sent the same route but rejoining the current Bonnie Brae path south of the athletic village. That would take 'through-traffic' out of the Mean Green Village which would help incorporate the whole area instead of being divided as it is, eliminating the throughway would allow for significantly more parking, free local residents from having to go through a 20 mph school zone, and it would also enable restaurants to build along that valuable frontage property that faces the interstate.

Lets see, you guys want everyone to watch an 82 year old man run out on the field, and then run into the end zone. Then you're going to fire off a cannon and watch to see what happens. You guys are some sick puppies.

I usually go but tonight I got roped into assisting at a food bank. Damn hungry people. Why don't they just go to a restaurant, or better yet, go shoot a moose? Is that asking too much? Seriously, if they're not motivated enough to marry a beer heiress for themselves, then why should we have to support them?

Damn right! It may be a loony bin, but it's our loony bin, and we're certianly entitled to make faces out the window at the crazy people we see wandering around. And Andy Hogue, yep, he's a certified creationist, white squirrel loving, football hating, Jesus freak right wing nutjob.

That ref should sit down and enjoy a cold Bud Light after that hit.

Yeah, while we're all progressively posting endlessly on a college football message board. Grow Up Andy!

I was able to get this from Wikipizzia: For decades the Mean Green Nation's loyalty lay with The Flying Tomato; the beloved establishment that brought us all great pride with the graceful airships that once graced the skies of Denton. Those days were also highlighted by Red Baron Pizza and pride in the Pizzaland. Then it all came to an end with the agreement; an agreement that meant the end of the airships, and subjected to pressures form "outsiders", The Flying Tomato was relegated to being just The Tomato. The nation was devastated. It was a dark time for all. Pizza coupons were nearly worthless as they were carried by the wheel barrow load by hungry students. There was the pushing incident by The Pizza Inn Nazi in one of the Fry Street beer halls. Although it landed him in jail, it brought much attention to his plight, and His Struggle. He wanted, he needed, he felt it was his God given duty to extoll the virtues of the Supreme Pizza! The Tomato was then burned to the ground by arsonists. Although there was no solid proof, the Pizza Inn Nazi was able to convince the populace that the guilt lay with his opposition. With their help he could create a new, and even greater Pizza Empire. Huge torch lit Pizza rallys were held. Rocco's was soon closed, and Pizza Fascist Storm Troopers, the Eagle Claws, repeatitively plundered area Ci-Ci's, devouring everything in sight. All opposition was crushed like so much red pepper. Everyone was suspected of not being loyal to the Pizza Inn regime. Spy camera necklaces were distributed to the Pizza Youth. Chuck E Cheese was sent to a forced labor camp. One former pizza salesman sidestepped the issue by stating "I'm through with that. Now, I'll climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow, until I find my dream of a new stadium." In a revolutionary idea, new ingrediants being tested in Spanish area restaurants were combined with lessons learned during the last Great Culinary Competition. Brownish squirrels were soon being subjected to the supremecy of their Pure, White Squirrel overlords. Now, as the Pizza Inn Nazi once again takes to the air, being launched on a cycle that has sirens that create terror as it dives towards the ground. Operation Cheesy Sea Lion is now in the planning stages. Those that don't learn from Pizza history are doomed to repeat it.

Now That The Athletic Fee Finally Passed
ADLER replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
Rick, Several years ago there was a proposed baseball stadium that would have been paid for by the minor league Denton Outlaws but built in he North Texas athletic village on UNT property. That option is gone since the Denton Outlaws have ceased operations. Are there potentially other franchises from other minor leagues that may be interested in a similar deal? The Grand Prairie facility was built with taxpayer support, is this something that the City of Denton should also be considering financially supporting? Denton needs some entertainment venues, and surely there are reports on how much tax revenue is received by a city hosting events. -
Yes.

People, it's the personel. And I am not putting anybody down because I certainly respect every athlete that has ever played for the Mean Green. For whatever reason, the All-Conference type football players stopped arriving at North Texas. There were still the rare occasions when a recruit selected North Texas because of a desired program (one premeir recruit chose North Texas because of it's dyslexia program), but not many others. The 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 signing classes had very few high school recruits that would develop to become all-conference calibre players, and even fewer that would attract interest from the NFL. By 2005 it was apparent that North Texas was becoming overmatched at nearly every position when compared to our competition, even having two nation leading running backs couldn't help the team win games. Players left, an already thin depth chart was further depleted, and the APR score dropped. Dickey was released and left the cupboard about as depleted as could exist at a division 1 program. The offense was so inept that it was often outperformed by the rag-tag Green Team made up of freshman and walk-on players. Dodge will fix the situationbut it will take time. He now has many of the skill position players but still needs guys in the trenches. .........

I think that Flyer was stating that this was the first time that The Daily hasn't intentionally spread disinformation to further their agenda. This issue isn't unique to the North Texas paper. One of the largest news sources in the world, Pravda, had the same type of issues with it's credibility from 1912 to 1991. It retained higher standards of journalistic integrity than the NT Daily, but not by much. I still love how The Daily reported that the University of Houston is able to magically fund it's athletic program through rainbows and sunshine. "Jeepers, it's a good thing we can do this instead of having institutional support" NT DAILY The Finest Source For Yellow Journalism

Texas State is already $12 per credit hour. They will be at $20 per credit hour the year after North Texas finally raises it's athletics fee from $3 per credit hour to $10. I don't want to discount the importance of this week's victory, but it's only the first of many necessary steps.

A Thank You to all you students that supported the referendum.

How do they announce it?

All this waiting has caused tension. Aren't we entitled to a diversionary witch burning? How do we prooove that he is a witch?

Playmaker, is this bootlicker allegation true?

In the meantime all we can do is just keep watching the black smoke.

Just for clarification, is that 5PM today, or 5PM the next business day (Monday)?
