U N T To The W A C Thread On The Tech Board

Here's a few thoughts for any Louisiana Tech fans that may be perusing this thread. The WAC not admitting UNT, ASU, and ULL together is the only thing that saved ULM from being permanently knocked down to Division 1AA. Tech would have been the closest conference road game for fans of UNT, ASU, and ULL and could have easily developed a rivalry with each school. Games become 'events' when large groups of vising fans are present. The Sun Belt Football Conference would have ceased to exist. Troy, FAU and FIU would likely have been unable to make a sustained jump to 1-A football, Western Kentucky and South Alabama never would have even tried. The WAC would have had the New Orleans Bowl starting with the 2005 season. An annual Independence Bowl berth could possibly have been contracted for the conference. Oh well. In spite of being in the bottom of the lowly Sun Belt the last 4 years, North Texas attendance has continued to increase, booster club membership is way up, new facilities have been built for most sports, the athletic budget has continued to increase as revenue has risen, there soon will be a brand new state-of-the-art football stadium, the students created a new athletics fee which will contribute an additional 7.5 million per year to athletics, John Q. Hammons Hotels and the City of Denton are planning a Hotel and Convention Center that will be built on athletics property and will provide additional revenue to the Athletic Department, and if this all wasn't enough, Chesapeake is set to drill just south of the former golf course which together with the rest of the athletic village sits atop the Barnett Shale. The football team has been horrible the last four seasons, but for an athletic program that doesn't receive a penny from state funds, the future looks pretty good. -

U N T To The W A C Thread On The Tech Board

Such was the wisdom of one Norval Pohl. After the WAC was raided by CUSA, losing Rice, Tulsa, SMU, and soon after UTEP, WAC Commissioner Karl Benson approached Utah State, NMSU and North Texas about joining the WAC. Wright Waters proposed forming a league by combining the remaining 6 WAC schools with the 8 Sun Belt football schools for a combined football conference. It was an awkward idea, but as Sun Belt Commissioner, Waters had to protect the interests of all members, not just the football schools. The WAC western schools had no interest in such an alignment. UNT President Norval Pohl was Director of the Sun Belt Presidents Council. Dr Pohl worked with the presidents of the other Sun Belt schools and with the president of Louisiana Tech and made the proposal to the WAC that that North Texas, NMSU, and Utah State would join the WAC on certain conditions, that invitations were also extended to Arkansas State, Louisiana Lafayette, and Idaho, and that a suitable Division 1 home was found for MTSU (MAC). FAU, FIU, Troy, and La Monroe were not yet Sun Belt members and were not part of the deal. Utah State's athletic director, Rance Pugmire then broke ranks and announced that USU was joining the WAC no matter what. The deal then fell apart because Benson told the NMSU commissioner that if NMSU didn't join then the WAC could invite Idaho and be through with expansion. NMSU, which has forever aspired to be in a conference with either UTEP or New Mexico and couldn't risk being left out, left for the WAC with the blessings from the other Sun Belt schools. UTEP then bolted for CUSA and Benson again approached North Texas, stating that if North Texas wouldn't join, then the WAC would invite ASU or ULL and that North Texas would be left without a conference. Idaho was to be left to die. Pohl again declined as long as Division 1 homes were not guaranteed for Idaho, ULL, ASU, and MTSU. The presidents of ASU and ULL also declined. Benson, Pohl, and the presidents of these other universities knew that if one of the three, UNT. ASU, or ULL left, the Sun Belt football conference would die due to shortage of potential football members, In desperation, the WAC accepted Idaho, the same program that they had been trying to let die for the preceding months. The Sun Belt then offered Troy, FAU, FIU, and La Monroe. (Until this point ULM had been a full member of the Southland but only played their football in the Sun Belt. That's why we have what we have today. -
Boon, I'm saying she experienced a deeply religious experience.

I believe that's a photograph of Marlene Desmond. I knew her in college, very religious girl.

I think all the schools in the UT system now have orange as their primary color, though many have an accent color. All the branches of LSU are purple and gold, and I believe some of them also may use Tigers as their mascot, This builds unity for a system. Until this decision, the multiple campuses of the North Texas system were going to have nothing in common except the same shared Board of Regents.

I hope that means exactly what it sounds like it means.

We need another quarterback that can pass, run and catch. Javia and Riley will both be playing together through the 2010, 2011, and 2012 seasons. This signing will enable North Texas to finally make the transition to the A-11 offense.

Brett, your father is in our prayers.

Well, that was the old him. He was a little mixed up at that time. He had a bad marriage, and he just gave up smoking. He's o.k. now. He's a private detective. He's been searching for the inventor of the Opti-grab.

According to the Sporting News in this story, Barnes was terminated at Oklahoma State in January 2008 after "Oklahoma State ranked 103rd in total defense, out of 119 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision." I doubt that Coach Barnes was the cause of the poor defensive performance, but Gandy surely felt pressure to make changes with all of the money that boosters were throwing at the program. My personal opinion is that Nelson Barnes is a tough as nails coach that seemed not only very popular with his players while he coached at North Texas, but also got them to play their best. I'd love to see him back with North Texas.

I doubt that Riley gets pissed about people dumpster-diving for his discarded items. It's probably just idle gossip. By the way, what's the name of your soap opera?
