Trying to figure out where you are getting a football championship

I am glad to hear that because the body language of some of them in the video showed some resentment and skepticism. Of course this is natural since their coach was just replaced by this new guy. Lots to criticize about Seth but I think at least outwardly he never lost the team. If so, this is going to mean Morris will have to work extra hard to win their trust.

I saw that as partially a product of how many times we only rushed 3 because we dropped everyone back into coverage, mainly because the safeties were such a liability.

If 1.2 million is correct as the base, then you have to add all the automatic extras. Seth got paid to do the radio show and had a generous car allowance as well. That alone was tens of thousands before adding the myriad of bonuses, a few of which were basically automatic, like completing the season. But in general, I think an incentive-laden contract is the way to go.

Meanwhile some people on this board expecting Carthel to leave his HC job to become a coordinator here…

The point is that it was difficult to recruit to UIW and he did what it took to identify and then develop Ward, who is obviously good enough to play in the PAC 12. Similarly, it is difficult to recruit to NT and we have needed to polish some hidden gems, like two star Darden who plays in the NFL. This guy understands how to work hard and search for talent, then develop it. Not saying I am in love with the hire but this guy has done enough to earn a little good will before we burn him in effigy.

You should watch the video where he discussed Ward. Was an option QB and they went to his basketball games to check out his ability to read the floor. I don’t describe that as falling into their laps. I call that hard work and due diligence. Back to original point of the thread before it devolved into the usual GMG catfight/bitchfest.

I like this hire and expect the qb play we need

Conversely, if our offense was performing as it was supposed to, our defense wouldn't be on the field so much and exhausted at the end of the game.- 13 replies

Inconsistent QB play has absolutely been our biggest issue since 2020.- 13 replies

No way any P5 position coach leaves to take the same job at UNT. They are making 3-5 times there than we can pay them. I would say even more so for WSU assistants, since they are a first year staff. No reason to leave a new HC.

Ryan Walters is now the HC at Purdue.

I am not super excited about this hire. I am not sure it moves the needle much for fans. And I really wanted someone with FBS HC experience; HOWEVER, I agree that he checks a lot of boxes. Head coaching experience (FCS), with overall winning record Has won conference championships and won in the post season Carried out a rebuild Strong Texas ties Proven coordinator experience (P5) with dynamic offenses STRONG track record of attracting and developing QBs (Ward, Mahomes) Young and hungry My initial reaction was disappointment, but I think it is likely a solid hire. I am going to see how he puts his staff together before I make a final judgement. am not sure how involved he is as HC in the offense, but it could be an opportunity to hire an up-and-comer at OC (like Jones that some here wanted as HC). I think his DC hire will be the key to his success (well, duh, obviously). If he makes a good hire at DC, I think we will be in good shape. Still processing this, but I don't think it is an bad as some are making it out to be. He should be able to bring in some talent to us in the AAC. EDITED BECAUSE I WAS UP MY OWN ASS AND CONFUSING HBU AND UIW. But still, not a catastrophic hire.

Bring in a guy who has never been a coordinator and have him hire an OC with no coordinating experience? The offensive game planning would be off the hook! -

Monday Morning: Who would you rather?

People on this board want a guy with 2 years coordinator experience and less than 10 years overall experience (much of it an an analyst or GA) to head our program into a new conference is so on-brand for this fanbase. Good grief. Riley, Gillespe, and Perry are such an old Denton type of hire. It is EXACTLY what people outside the program expect of little ole' UNT. Why do I think this? In addition to the multitude of "who does NT think they are?" posts on social media after firing Seth, I experienced it personally this weekend at the Army-Navy game. As usual, I wore my bright green North Texas hoodie to the game and was stopped by a couple of guys while walking into the stadium with a "Mean Green!" So I walk over and was appreciative of the brand recognition which was surprising in Philadelphia. (Turns out they were Texas guys.) They asked me if we were going to hire Riley and I responded that I hoped for Fuente or similar because I preferred more experience. His response: "I mean, no offense, but it's North Texas. What are they trying to be? It's not Oklahoma or something." He completely dismissed my logical explanation that the AAC offers us the opportunity for a NY6 or eventually an expanded playoff spot. He eventually just blew it off and said, "just teasing you" but it was clear that he thought the concept of North Texas trying to better itself was laughable. I guess at least he knew who we were...
