http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...;ATCLID=1206533 Juett's Two Goals Lift North Texas Past UTEP 4-3 DENTON, Tex. (9/2/07) – With the game on the line and tied late in the match, sophomore Kendall Juett took control. Juett scored two goals in the final seven minutes to break open a 2-2 tie against UTEP to power the Mean Green (2-0) to a 4-3 victory at the North Texas Soccer Field. "This was a very good win early in the season, UTEP is a solid team picked fourth to finish in CUSA and one of the better teams in the region" said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. After letting a 2-0 lead slip away in the second half, North Texas was back on its heels in the final ten minutes against the Miners. That’s when Juett came to the rescue. First in the 83rd minute Christie Stewart was taken down in the UTEP (1-1) box for a penalty kick. Juett nailed the shot in the top left corner to regain the lead for North Texas at 3-2. Just two minutes later Brittney Cleveland found Janaye Woods on the outside for a break. Woods got around the UTEP defender and fed the ball across to Juett for a deflection in for her second goal of the game. UTEP did not go away quietly however as Tameka Sumter cut the Mean Green lead to 4-3 with 87 seconds left off a header. North Texas held off one final UTEP rally to win in a clash of regional powers. North Texas scored to first half goals, the first coming from Cleveland off a corner kick from Juett. The second goal was put home by Woods, the first of her career, on a loose ball in the UTEP box. The Miners tied the game up in the second half with two goals in 13 minutes until Juett was able to put the game away for North Texas. Juett finished the day with five points while Woods and Cleveland both had three. North Texas is 2-0 to start the season for the second straight year. The Mean Green is back in action on Friday, September 7 against Lamar in Natchitoches, La.

(8/31/07) – In the first game of the season it was a night of seconds for the North Texas women’s soccer team. Powered by Gennifer Hurst and Veronica Ayala’s first half goals the Mean Green (1-0) got past TWU 2-0 at the North Texas Soccer Field. The tallies by Ayala and Hurst are the second career goals for both players. It a very defensive game, North Texas outshot the Pioneers 24-3 but TWU goalkeeper Aly Vincent made 13 saves on the night to keep things close. “They made it very tough on us tonight but you have to give their keeper some credit because she played extremely well tonight,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. Ayala scored the first goal of the night on a service from Kendall Juett. The pass came off a free kick 25 yards out that Ayala deflected past Vincent to make it 1-0 North Texas. Hurst added the second goal of the night for the Mean Green in the 27th minute of play on a loose ball in the box. We are going into the house of the #8 team in the country against arguably the best secondary and offensive lines in the country. We are installing a new spread offense and new 4-3 defense. We have many freshman and sophomores in the 2 deep including 3 receivers and the kicker. I expect the team and coaching staff to give 100% from whistle to whistle and to represent the university with pride, class, and heart. With Todd Dodge at the helm, I have no doubt that this will be the case. We finally have a coach that will be going into a "bodybag game" without the "bodybag" mentality. Coach Dodge has every intention of coming home with a victory. Rest assurred, there will be no "Aw shucks" attitude from now on. As a fan I know that if we lose that there will be many that come onto the board to say " I told you so" about hiring a high school coach. There will be those that jump ship. Those that bash Dodge, RV, and the team. We cannot allow this mentality to crawl into or heads because the climb up to respectability and ultimately superiority will take time. It may not happen this year or even next year, but IT WILL happen. I will choose to take the long term view and not abandon the plan if tomorrow doesn't turn out how we all want it to and i hope you all will too. GMG!!! BEAT ou!!!

From the Tulsa World: Strong gone: Oklahoma wide receiver Fred Strong has left the football team, university officials confirmed Thursday. Strong, a sophomore from Austin, caught nine passes for 73 yards last season. Strong was expected to contribute to this year's team but wasn't healthy in the preseason and was passed on the depth chart by sophomore Adron Tennell and freshman Ryan Broyles.

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/s...game_notes2.pdf According to the OU game-week depth chart on page 8 of the link he is listed as the 2nd team slot receiver. Maybe injuries have thrust him higher up. Not sure.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview?game...01&confId=4 North Texas-Oklahoma Preview NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- North Texas coach Todd Dodge couldn't have done much better in high school before graduating to the college ranks. For his entrance exam as a college coach, the architect of Texas high school power Southlake Carroll draws No. 8 Oklahoma -- the college football team that's won more games since World War II than any other. "That's great for him. It's hopefully going to be a great career starter," said Sooners kicker Garrett Hartley, who played for Dodge for three seasons at Carroll. "However, I do feel bad that he has to open up the season versus Oklahoma." Starting with the Sooners isn't exactly how Dodge would have scripted his college debut either. "It's an awesome task that we have going into Oklahoma, whether it's the first year you're putting in a program or you're 10th year," said Dodge, who is believed to be the first high-school coach to make the jump to Division I since 1991, when North Texas hired Dennis Parker. "When they made the schedule five years ago they didn't call and ask me my opinion on it," he said. Dodge had a remarkable run at the suburban Dallas high school, going 98-11 in seven seasons. Over the past five seasons, Dodge's Dragons went 79-1 and won four state titles. The only loss in that span came by one point against Katy in the 2003 state title game. "You look at his track record, and the success is really quite amazing -- 79 wins and only one loss in the last five years," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "I don't care where you're coaching, that's doing an excellent and great, great job." Receiver Malcolm Kelly, who played in Texas' largest class, put it this way: "Southlake Carroll is the best team that Texas has ever seen." "You know he knows how to win and that's the philosophy they're going to bring to this team," Sooners cornerback Marcus Walker said. "That's the attitude they're going to have." The question is whether Dodge can bring that success to the college level. "He's got bigger and better players now, and more mature players. Whatever stage you're working at, I look at it as relative," Stoops said. "I expect they'll do an excellent job there. You don't win that much and have that much success over a period of time without communicating well with your players, motivating them and getting them to understand what you expect them to do." From Oklahoma's perspective, there is a certain amount of mystery surrounding North Texas' game plan for Saturday. The Sooners have been watching game tape of the Mean Green from last season, although there's been significant turnover among the starters. They've also been watching tape of Carroll to get an idea of what Dodge likes to do. "That to me is the rub," offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said. "There's a bunch of guesstimation." The Sooners are prepared for a spread offense like the one Dodge ran at Carroll, but there's a little more guesswork on defense. Wilson said the Dragons would pressure the run game by placing safeties and linebackers in areas they couldn't be blocked, but that left the secondary in one-on-one coverage. "They played just a lot of man-to-man. Kind of `I've got you, you have him and you have him' kind of defense," said Kelly, who led Oklahoma with 993 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns last season. "If that's what they want to do, then we welcome that." The Sooners expect to face some of the Carroll schemes and some alterations brought on by different personnel and a higher level of football. Despite having two returning starters, the North Texas depth chart lists five freshmen and sophomores as the linemen who'll be blocking for new quarterback Daniel Meager. "Sometimes as a coach it's not high school to college what they can do, but it's do they have the players to do what they want to do?" Wilson said. "They might not this year do some things they want to do that maybe two or three years from now they're doing because the personnel fits." The Sooners also will be breaking in a new quarterback, freshman Sam Bradford. He assumes the role vacated by Paul Thompson, who led Oklahoma to the Big 12 title last season despite a rocky year that included the dismissal of starting quarterback Rhett Bomar, a controversial onside kick that resulted in defeat at Oregon and an injury to star tailback Adrian Peterson. "It's just another challenge," Kelly said. "All that stuff we overcame last year, there's nothing that we can't overcome this year."

He has been suspended indefinitely. BTW he is a 2nd team receiver and would have probably seen action tomorrow.

http://newsok.com/article/3114574/1188536163 By Jake Trotter Staff Writer Just after Todd Dodge moved his family to a new house in April, a storm blew a tree onto his car. "I guess we'll have to get another tree,” he told his wife, Elizabeth. Not long after that, the power went out on the Dodge's side of the street during the summer. "He went to sleep without any air,” Elizabeth said. "I guess it didn't bother him.” Dodge's even temperament — which Elizabeth said he shares with their son, Riley — helped make him of the one most successful Texas high school coaches in history in just seven seasons at Southlake Carroll. That demeanor may also help Dodge turn around North Texas, which travels to Norman to face the Sooners on Saturday. "I think it has a lot do with him being a quarterback, being the guy,” Elizabeth said. "Riley's a lot like that. "I think it's just what they've been, and it's transferred to their whole lives.” The Dodge's live quite the football lives. Dodge was hired in the off-season to revive the Mean Green, following a 48-game win streak and four state titles at Carroll. Before that, Dodge was Texas' starting quarterback in the mid-1980s. And he's passed on the quarterback pedigree to Riley, now a senior at Carroll. Riley, who committed to play at Texas last year, was the Class 5A offensive player of the year as a junior last season after throwing for 4,237 yards and 54 touchdowns. "My son and I, we have a tremendous relationship,” said Dodge, who coached Riley the last three years at Carroll. "We are bound and bonded by the game of football.” Even Elizabeth has football connections. Her father, Ebbie Neptune, was a longtime Austin-area high school football coach and administrator. And her best friend at the elementary school she taught at until this year? Sandra Applewhite, mom of former UT quarterback, Major Applewhite. But the Dodge family's tranquility was tested earlier this year when Neptune, also Riley's best friend, suffered a massive stroke in January. For weeks, it didn't appear that Neptune would survive. "We didn't know if he'd be with us very long,” Riley said. But gradually, Neptune got better. Both Dodge and Riley said their strength helped with Neptune's recovery. "The quarterback position teaches you to be that way,” Riley said. "I think it has carried over to my grandfather's situation. "You can't carry your feelings on your shoulders.” This summer, Riley decided to change his commitment from Texas to North Texas to not only play for his dad, but so Neptune — who is recovering in a facility just north of McKinney, which is located near Denton — could watch him play. "It was the best decision for our family, and Riley made it on his own,” Dodge said. "He and his grandfather are very close, and that was the biggest part of the decision for him. "And for me, it was going to be tough not being able to watch him play.”

http://newsok.com/article/3114978/ OU Football Player Arrested By James Tyree and Jake Trotter The Oklahoman Ryan Broyles, a freshman wide receiver on the University of Oklahoma football team, was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of trying to steal gasoline from a Norman convenience store. The 19-year-old Norman High graduate was arrested on suspicion of attempted larceny and taken to Cleveland County jail. He was released on a $200 bond. Norman Police Capt. Leonard Judy said an officer around 12:10 a.m. spotted a sport utility vehicle parked at the gas pumps of the Mr. Shortstop store at Alameda Street and 12th Avenue SE. The store was closed, but the officer saw a man standing between the vehicle and a gas pump. The investigating officer reported the man having a key to the pump along with overriding codes to activate the pump. The key unlocked a pump door that leads to a keypad on which to type the code. A juvenile was in the vehicle, Judy said. The juvenile was cited for a curfew violation, but the report had no information on the person, including age, gender, or address.

http://hub.ou.edu/articles/article.php?ite...on_id=664781553 MEAN GREEN'S REVAMPED 'D' MEETS UNDERMANNED SOONER BACKFIELD By Royce Young/The Daily A week ago, it looked like OU’s main strength against North Texas’ main weakness would likely be the key storyline following the game. Last season, the Mean Green gave up 149 yards rushing per game, and is starting a number of new players on the defense. OU returns a massive offensive line that averages 317 pounds among the five starters, along with arguably the deepest set of running backs in the Big 12 Conference. But after a suspension and a nagging injury, the strength of the Sooner backfield doesn’t look as strong. Sophomore Chris Brown is out due to suspension and senior Allen Patrick is still questionable due to an ankle injury. That leaves two tailbacks who have never had a collegiate carry and another that is coming off major knee surgery. And with OU christening a new starting quarterback in redshirt freshman Sam Bradford, it was assumed the running backs would see a bunch of carries. But the coaching staff has said it’s confident in the three running backs and still isn’t ruling out Patrick. “The last time Jacob Gutierrez was out there, he rushed for 170 yards. We’ve seen what DeMarco Murray can do against a pretty decent defense out there. Mossis Madu has been awfully good,” said head coach Bob Stoops. “All those guys will play and we’ll see how far along we get Allen. It’s our intention to work him to be ready to play.” Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said earlier this week that he believes a team makes the most improvement from week one to week two, meaning he wants to every player that is able to play. “You go out and put every bullet in the gun and don’t hold anything back. This is what we are, this is what we do,” Wilson said “Because you make most strides from week one to week two, you don’t want to go out playing week one with your hand tied behind your back and on one leg. You want to come out firing and flying.” North Texas first-year head coach Todd Dodge is attempting to remedy his defense’s main deficiency by making a switch back to the 4-3 scheme. Dodge also will counter the Sooner’s offensive attack with his own unique setup — the same run-and-gun spread offense he used to go 79-1 the last five years at Southlake Carroll High School. “It’s all relative. He’s got bigger and better players now. I expect he’ll do an excellent job there,” Stoops said. “You don’t win that much and have that much success over a period of time without communicating well with your players and motivating and getting them to understand what they’re expected to do.” Dodge’s 2005 state championship team set a state record by averaging 47.8 points per game and his last three state championship teams all led the state in total offense and all averaged over 500 yards per game. His offense at North Texas really has no where to go but up as last year they ranked 117th in the nation in passing and total offense and averaged just around 13 points a game. “I think as much as anything they’re a team with a really good running back that will try to spread you out and try to run it,” Stoops said. “Anymore, we’re used to seeing this style of play. Everybody has their different wrinkles and I don’t mean to say anybody’s the same, but we’re used to seeing it.” But now, what looks to be the Mean Green’s strength will be countered by OU’s defensive muscle. The Sooner secondary is being touted as the best in the Big 12. Some are calling it the best in the country. With the move of senior D.J. Wolfe to safety and talented experience in Reggie Smith, Nic Harris, Marcus Walker and Lendy Holmes, the secondary seems secure. “I just think overall the group has been building. I want to see them come up and start fast and be a really solid group,” Stoops said.

I might just have a Dodge-like crush on Quoner. BTW: Coach Dodge is a wise wise man.

Not sure who the OSU quarterback was but the NT quarterbacks dad was Coach Tom Foolery.

Other tidbits: At the very end of the interview Galloway's partner asked Dodge, "Could last years Southlake team beat Nort Texas. Dodge gave an uncomfortable chuckle and said "no". You could tell Dodge was not happy about the shot. Dodge heaped praise on Coach Fry and what he meant to NT. Reiterated that he wasn't asked about scheduling OU a few years ago and that he will play the teams on the schedule. When asked about support, he touted the student body, alumni, proximity to DFW and that Denton is the 9th fastest growing city in the nation.

What do you consider to be the greatest play in NT History? There are plenty to choose from: Scott Davis 4 yard TD run to beat SMU in 1990. Jeremy Pearl interception return for a TD vs Cincinnati in 2002. Jason Mills 15 yard TD Pass to Bo Harrison to beat Tech in 1997. Scott Hall 32 yard TD pass to George Marshall to beat NMSU in 2001. Kickoff return for TD to beat Tennessee in 1975. Jason Mills TD pass with time running out to complete the comeback vs Oregon State in 1995. I'm sure some of the older posters can shed some light on the early days.
