This raises a question that I had on saturday after some of the questionable calls. I know TD said before the season that he was turning the offense over to Canales. I also know that TD is the boss so I wonder how often, if at all, he overrides Chico's plays before they signal them in. Whomever called the consecutive wildcats from the two was playing to get more room for the punt. He was not playing for a first down and that is just sad. Nobody in the stands was fooled, let alone the Rice coaching staff. I will also give credit where credit is due. That was a ball$y call to go for it on 4th and goal. It was also a great call on the shovel pass on the same play.

I doubt it took Bob yelling at TD to get RV's attention. The only thing it did was pi$$ RV off at a time when he was already pi$$ed off. The alumni side was very quite at that time and it only served as a spectacle to hear what was said. Let's be clear. I don't disagree with what was said. I think it is painfully obvious that TD has failed in the most important category of all and that is in the win loss column. I am not saying that the game is not the place to yell. I am saying that in hind sight yelling there didn't serve the purpose that I think was intended(unless the purpose was shock value, then touche). We need all the passionate fans we can get around here and I appreciate that Bob was fired up but I will continue to disagree with the method of delivery. On a 2nd note, if RV got mad at the comments on Saturday how in the world would he hope to handle a more high profile job where Saturday would seem like a walk in the park. You can't lose your cool regardless of what is said.

Shut up? Seriously? You sound like a five year old. I'll say it again. If you have an issue with TD or RV go to the coaches show and tell them. Email them, write a letter, send a candygram. Yelling at the game doesn't get a whole lot accomplished.
-
Watch what I say? Is that a threat? Take a deep breath and relax. It was a very fluid situation and that is how I remember it. I don't have a problem with what was said but use a better venue. If you want to blast me for that then fine. We will agree to disagree. But If someone has a problem with Coach Dodge then man up and go to the coaches show and talk to him face to face. If you have a problem with RV call him up or send him an email.

The "angry fan" was on the edge of sections C and D around row 15 or 16. He was yelling and RV was on the sideline at about the 20. He turned around and at first I think he was just looking to see where the yelling was coming from. The guy kept yelling that the coaches lost the game not the players etc... RV walked to the railing and kept staring but he looked like he was not happy. A guy on the sideline came over to talk to RV and I assume told him to ignore him and keep his cool( of course I have no way of knowing what was said. I just know that's what I would have told him). It was awkward and tense to say the least. The saddest part is that he was yelling while Nathan was getting taken off on a stretcher. Earlier in the game a Rice player was injured on the field and the cheerleaders started one of their cheers. Several of us in C had to yell at them to stop cheering because a player was hurt and they just looked up at us like they didn't know why we were telling them to stop.

A hip dislocation is usually at least a three month injury so it looks like Thompson will be our QB the rest of the way. My heart goes out to Tune because he paid his dues and after all of this time finally got the starting job only to get injured in game two. Let's all get behind Thompson.
-
2 things: It looked like they put an air cast on Tune's leg before they put him in the ambulance. Doesn't look good at all. A fan in C was blasting Dodge at the end of the game and Rick Villareal almost came into the stands and had to be restrained. He was mad and it almost got ugly. He stared him down and then started walking to the stands.

9/11: Honor America Day At Fouts Field...
Eagle-96 replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
I was at work in my office job on a "normal" Tuesday. A co-worker said " A plane just hit the World Trade Center". My first thought was that I remember that a bomber had hit the Empire State Building back in the 1940's in bad weather. I thought it was probably the same situation. I logged into CNN and saw the pictures. It looked pretty bad and I thought that it was strange the the sky was clear. How did a plane accidentally hit the tower in such clear weather. My co-worker then said " a plane hit the 2nd tower and it was not an accident". Everything changed in that one instant. They brought tv sets up to our office on the 18th floor in downtown Dallas and we watched in horror the rest of the day. It was surreal like a bad dream. The day moved in slow motion. Our 42 story office was at the end of the Love field runway and needless to say we were all concerned about the ease with which a plane could hit our building. -
My 1'st Ever College Game I Saw Involved Rice U...
Eagle-96 replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
My first college game was the 1980 Cotton Bowl last second win by Houston over Nebraska. It was strange as my dad had never been what I would consider a football fan. He took me(7 years old) and my brother(10) to our fist college game. We had no connection to either school but he knew that my brother and I were football fanatics even at such a young age. It was bitterly cold but I was in awe to be in such a large stadium that was packed to the hilt with fans. The finish was amazing as the Cougars won on a last second touchdown pass into what seemed like quintuple coverage. Even with the last second heroics, the thing that I remember for some strange reason is the chant I kept hearing over and over again. Eat 'em up beat 'em up Rah Rah Rah. For some reason I thought that was the coolest thing ever. My first Mean Green game was 1994 vs Montana. I can still see Mitch on the field as time expired. He just needed one more play. We were this close to beating a team that was ranked either 1 or 2 in the country at the time. I was hooked instantly. I can say that I will actually miss Fouts as I have had some of the best times in my life there. See ya later McNeese, last second win over Oregon State, shootout over Utah State, storming the field after NMSU, smoking Baylor like cheap cigar. Realizing that my future wife(an Aggie) was the "one" when she went to see a game at Fouts on her birthday while we were dating and wore Mean Green Gear and cheered for UNT with everything she had. Damn I'll miss that place. -
Listen, the mistakes Tune made today are ones that can be corrected through film sessions, coaching, and reps. They were not mistakes made because he isn't talented enough. His first pick was thrown short because he got flushed and had to throw back across his body. If he sets and gets more on the ball he leads the receiver right into the end zone. Alternatively he can just throw the ball away and go to 2nd down. The 2nd pick just didn't have enough arc and was a great play by the db. Tune needs to understand when to step up in the pocket especially when the outside rush was so strong. If Tune can learn to step up he can by more time for the receivers to get into space. Again these are all coachable issues. That said, Tune didn't panic when flushed and found some holes to get to the sticks. Although I like the guts, I hope Dodge talks to him about lowering his shoulder to pop that lineman along the sidelines to finish that run. That was a mans play but one that could get him hurt. I liked what I saw from Nate and I think wencould be in for a special year offensively speaking.

Very proud of the team. They proved me wrong today. Tune looked poised out there and made some good decisions on the zone read. He forced a throw across his body that he didn't have to and he didn't get enough under the fade on his picks today. On the flip side his TD pass was a thing of beauty. Our tackles were getting bum rushed all day and I think Tune needs to do a better job of stepping up into the pocket. One second can make a world of difference on a route and I think Nathan needs to but more time up in the pocket. Dunbar was a stud today running and receiving. I think you are looking at the Sunbelt offensive player of the year if he stays healthy. Kudos to Leppo for stepping in and doing a nice job in relief. Wow we actually used tight ends and we actually line d up under center. Very proud of the offense and I think we can move the ball AND score against the remainder of our schedule. The defense MUST tackle better. Hill and Cook looked shaky at times and just didn't take good angles. And when they got there they tackled like you would expect a junior high player to tackle. The big play hurt us again. Kick coverage was terrible nothing more needs to be said. I am looking forward to Rice and I believe that we will come out on top.

Clempsun 52 NT 10 I have seen to many "body bag" games to know better than to predict that we will do much better than the above prediction. Don't get me wrong, I hope in my heart that we can pull off another Knoxville or Lubbock but my head says no. Prove me wrong boys!!! GMG!!!!

What I Don't Want To See Happen On Saturday
Eagle-96 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
"UNT comes out of their timeout at their own 17. Flag on the play and it's another delay of game for 5 yards." "3rd and 15 from the UNT 20 and there's another zone read for a loss of 2." "10:28 to go in the first half and the Clemson 3rd string looks pretty tired out there." -
Why You Should Try to Attend Mean Green Watching Parties
Eagle-96 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Giving up their Saturday? It's called a job. If they don't like working on Saturday then they should consider another job. If the Pourhouse, or any other bar for that matter, isn't smart enough to make sure their employees are decked out in Mean Green gear for a UNT watching party then they will have to deal with losing paying customers to other bars. We're not asking the wait staff to dye their hair green or name their first born Hayden. We're asking them to wear some Mean Green gear. My agreement goes to 111%. -
So me and my wife headed up to campus today to move my niece into her dorm for her first year at UNT. Needless to say she was excited to to start her Mean Green life. As a side trip the better half let me take a drive over to the AC to see Valhalla, Nirvana, Eden if you will. I just about wanted to weep green tears of joy and happiness. I have tad time and again on the board that, "you just have to see it in person", " pictures don't do it justice", " wait until you see it up close" etc... Well I can' stress enough how true those words are. The new stadium will make Fouts look like the turd it is. I was absolutely blown away by the stadium even in it's current state. The field level is wayyyyyy below grade and the sight lines are simply amazing. Keep in mind that the portion we see from ground level will amount to the 2nd tier of seating. We will be practically be on top of the field in the lower bowl. Please take some extra time before the Rice game to d over to the AC to see the progress. It will be well worth the extra time. WOW Just WOW!

If Dempsey gets the card early then it changes his approach for the rest of the game plain and simple. It makes him more tentative. It also changes Bradleys substitution approach later in the game. BTW The ref did us a favor by Findley not playing against Algeria as he has given us a big bag of nothing so far. Hopefully Buddle gets the call as he has done nothing but score goals in MLS this season not to mention 2 in the final warmup against Australia.
-
Let's be honest. The ref blew calls both ways. He could have easily called Dempsey for getting his elbow up early on a challenge and shown his card as it was just as blatant as several cards on Slovenia. On the one hand the Findley call was a bang bang play so I can understand that he got it wrong but on the other he is in the World Cup so he should be the best of the best. He is getting paid to make that call correctly. The Edu call was bad all around. If he is calling Bradley offside then he is wrong because that is passive all the way. Bradley was not involved in the play nor was he shielding the goalkeeper or a defender form making a play on the ball. If he is calling Edu for a tug or a push then he is wrong again as it is simply not there. The ref also clearly missed the Slovenes holding Bradley and Dempsy on the play. There are three ways to call that play. 1. allow the goal. 2. Holding Dempsey and a penalty shot. 3. Holding Bradley and a penalty shot. The ref should never be the centerpiece of a match and he was today. What made it worse is that the ref refused to explain what the call was right after the play or after the game to the US players. He simply had no explanation for the call. Nevertheless, After the Brits vomitted on the pitch today against Algeria it is simple. If the US beats Algeria on Wednesday they are through to the round of sixteen.

Expecting 6 wins Hoping for 8 wins Praying to the good Lord above that I get to push the plunger and blow Fouts Field to H-E-double hockey sticks. BTW: Bet the school could raise a few bucks for scholly's by auctioning of the honor of blowing up Fouts.
